Goldia Marshall Shigley

September 18, 1902 - October 6, 1991
Goldia Marshall Shigley, 89, formerly of Chalmers, died Sunday, Oct. 6, at George Davis Manor; West Lafayette. She had been a patient there since Sept. 19.

She was born Sept. 18, 1902, to Milt and Emma Dillard Marshall, in Chalmers. She was married April 29, 1926 to Harry F. Shigley, who died Jan. 27, 1968.

She graduated from Chalmers High School and received her teaching certificate from Madam Blaker's in Indianapolis.

She taught in White County all her life. She taught grades 1-8 at Watson School, near Wolcott, then taught at Spring Creek School, near Brookston. She then taught the first grade at Chalmers from 1922-35 and then first and second grades there from 1935-52. She taught second grade at Brookston, from 1953-56. For eight years she didn't teach on a regular basis. She returned to Chalmers, in 1964, as a first grade teacher and stayed there until retirement in May 1969.

She and four other teachers were honored by the Chalmers Civic Club in 1982, for their years of service with what is now the Frontier School Corp.

She was a member of Chalmers Community Church. She was an inactive life member of Kappa Kappa Sigma Sorority, Chalmers and a former member of the Book Club, White Co. Teachers Association, and National Retired Teachers Association.

Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Tessie Rogers, Ashland, Ohio and Mrs. Edith Oliak, Douglas, Ariz., and several nieces and nephews. Two brothers and three sisters are deceased.

The funeral was Wednesday at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with the Rev. Loren Shuman officiating.

Burial was in Chalmers Community Cemetery.

Joseph C. Franscoviak

March 4, 1914 - June 16, 2003
Joseph C. Franscoviak, 89, of rural Monon died Monday, June 16, 2003 at White County Memorial Hospital following a two-year illness.

He was born in Jasper County on March 4, 1914, the son of Lottis G. and Mary Anna Stephani Franscoviak.

He married Evelyn L. Norris on November 23, 1938 in Rensselaer. She died February 1, 2002.

He had been a farmer all of his life and had lived in the community all his life.

He was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church, Rensselaer.

He is survived by a daughter, Pat (Voyle) Ledyard of Ossian, IN; two sisters, Helen Lawson, Stockwell, IN and Anna Belle Lawson of LaPorte, IN. He had 4 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren.

One son, Donald D. Franscoviak, two brothers and two sisters and a granddaughter are deceased.

Friends may call at the Kellogg Funeral Home from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. today. Funeral services will be at Kellogg Funeral Home at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 19, 2003, with Father James Goodrum officiating.

Burial will be in Bedford Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or American Heart Fund.

Raymond F. Morris

August 26, 1908 - June 21, 1997
Raymond F. Morris, 88, 801 South Wood St., Brookston, died Saturday, June 21, at 3:40 a.m. in his home. He had recently been in failing health. He was born Aug. 26, 1908, to Jesse and Rena Moore Morris, in Morton Township. He was married Oct. 12, 1929, to Ruth Jordan, in Monon, and she survives.

He attended Monon schools. He had lived in Brookston since 1974, moving from Monon.

He was a farmer and retired in 1973.

He was a member of Brookston Federated Church.

Surviving with his wife are a son, Charlie Morris, Monon; three daughters, Mrs. Richard (Carolyn) Rogers, Brookston; Mrs. Michael (Darlene) Carnahan, Attica and Mrs. Curtis (Shirley Ann) Grigsby, Monticello; 12 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

A son, two daughters and two sisters are deceased.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with the Rev. James Copeland officiating.

Burial was in Bedford Cemetery, Monon.

Memorials may be given to Brookston Federated Church.

Ardath M. Owens

May 26, 1913 - June 13, 2003
Ardath M. Owens, 90, of Monon died Friday, June 13, 2003, at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Lafayette. She lived at Twin Lakes Village in Monticello since December 2002 and had been in ill health for 10 months.

She was born May 26, 1913, in Monon, to Chester Arthur and Nellie Helfrich Lutes. She married Gerald M. Owens on March 14, 1942. He died October 31, 1967.

She was a life-long resident of the community. She was a 1931 graduate of Monon High School.

She was a homemaker. She worked for several businesses in Monon, including Marsh Foodliner, Annis IGA Store and Howe Insurance Agency. She also worked for Woodward-Schumacher, Rensselaer.

She was a member of Monon First Baptist church.

She made and sold crafts from her home for several years.

Surviving are daughters, Carol Sue Stevenson of Lafayette and Marsha Kay (Larry) Brubaker of Kokomo; a son Robert G. (Jean) Owens of Monon and grandchildren Joy Brubaker of Kokomo and Michael Owens of Monon.

Two sisters and two brothers are deceased.

Funeral services were Tuesday at Kellogg Funeral Home in Monon with Rev. Steve Birch officiating.

Burial was in Bedford Cemetery, Monon.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, Monon.

Wilfred "Willie" J. Rieger

March 29, 1926 - May 11, 2003
Wilfred "Willie" J. Rieger, 77, of Monon died Sunday, May 11, 2003, in White County Memorial Hospital. He had been ill for the past year.

He was born in Kentland, Indiana on March 29, 1926 to Fred and Thelma Parr Scholz Rieger. His marriage was to Shirley A. Suter on July 16, 1998 in Little Nashville, Indiana. She survives.

He worked in maintenance at Purdue University for 20 years and was a heavy equipment operator for several years. He also operated a gas station in Battle Ground for 10 years.

He had lived in the Monon community for 43 years.

He was a member of the Monticello Eagles Lodge.

Surviving besides his wife are three stepdaughters: Cindy Dunham, Linda Snow and Bonnie Aills all of Monticello. He had 6 step grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild.

Funeral services are at 11:00 a.m. today (Wednesday) at Kellogg Funeral Home in Monon with Rev. Steve Birch officiating. Burial will be in Bedford Cemetery, Monon.

Ned Simmons

September 3, 1917 - July 23, 1998
Ned Simmons, 80 of Marseilles, Ill., formerly of Lafayette, died Thursday, July 23, in Rivershores Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Marseilles.

He was born Sept 3, 1917 in Archibald, Ohio.

He was married May 25, 1940 to Florence Ruth Irons in Monon and she survives.

He retired from the Purdue grounds department in 1981, and was the grounds foreman for president Arthur Hansen's estate for many years. He was also a volunteer firefighter with the Monon Fire Department for several years.

Mr. Simmons was a member of the Bedford Presbyterian church, where he served as an elder and was the sexton of the Bedford Cemetery for many years.

Survivors are a son, James P. Simmons of Bowling Green, Ky.; three daughters, Mrs. Dan (Elsie) Goodin, Indianapolis, Mrs. William (Frances K.) Hess of Ottawa, Ill, and Mrs. Jim (Mary) Humston of Kentucky Lake, Ky.; and a sister Mrs. Herbert (Betty) Baerlin of LaFeria, Texas.

Other survivors include 10 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Michael; a daughter, Kathleen in infancy; a granddaughter, Laura Spencer in infancy and 3 brothers, Robert, Bill and Paul.

Services were Monday at the Monon United Methodist Church. Interment was in Bedford Cemetery. The Soller-Baker Funeral home, Lafayette was in charge.

Gladfelter Funeral Home, Ottawa, Ill, handled local arrangements.

Mary Jean Smith

May 9, 1937 - July 14, 1998
Mary Jean Smith, 61, Logansport, died Tuesday, July 14, in St. Vincent Hospital, Indianapolis. She had been in ill health for 15 years.

She was born May 9, 1937, to Joseph Holt and Elsie May Owens Pauley, in Monon.

She was a graduate of Monon School.

She had lived in Logansport for 23 years, moving from Monticello. She had been employed in the cabinet department of RCA and had also worked as a bartender in Monticello.

She was a member of the Logansport Eagles Club.

She is survived by two sons, Joseph Paul and John Daniel, both Logansport, a daughter, Patricia Lynn, Logansport; three sisters, Dorothy Maxon, Joann Woody and Joy Williams, all of Monticello; her mother of Monticello; her companion, Darel Louthin, Logansport; nine grandchildren; three great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Two daughters and two brothers are deceased.

Funeral services were held Saturday at Miller-Roseka Funeral Home, Monticello, with Rev. J. J. Schaffer officiating.

Burial was in Bedford Cemetery, Monon.

Memorials may be given to Monon First Responders.

Iona F. Spinn

May 16, 1907 - March 28, 1999
Iona F. Spinn, 91, of Monticello, died Sunday, March 28, 1999 at Monticello Healthcare Center.

She was born on May 16, 1907, in White County to Beecher and Cora Johnson Stinson.

Her first husband, Ivan Linedecker, died in 1931. She married Carl R. Spinn on June 16, 1935, in Reynolds. He died in 1971.

She lived in White County all of her life.

She worked as a waitress at Green Gables Restaurant in Reynolds for several years.

She was a member of St. James Lutheran Church in Reynolds.

She is survived by one grandchild; two great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Her daughter, a sister and two brothers preceded her in death.

Funeral services were Tuesday at Kellogg Funeral Home, Monon, with the Rev. Stephen Koenig officiating.

Burial was in Bedford Cemetery in Monon.

Memorials may be made to the St. James Lutheran Church.
