Frederick H. Hintzman, Sr.
February 7, 1917 - August 3, 2002
Frederick H. Hintzman, Sr., 85, of Reynolds, died Saturday, August 3, 2002, in an auto accident.
He was born in Reynolds on February 7, 1917, to Albert C. and Esther Bardonner Hintzman. He married Lena Marie "Honey" Buss at St. James Lutheran Church in Reynolds on May 30, 1937. She died August 3, 2002.
He lived in the Reynolds community all of his life, and was a graduate of Chalmers High School.
He worked at the old Buss Hardware in Monticello for several years and then went to White County REMC where he worked for 43 years.
He was employed by White County REMC to heat the utilization program of the cooperative at a time when REMC was among the first rural electrics in the nation to organize such a department. He engineered many programs to better the lives of rural people from promoting the wide use of electricity to present day weatherization and conservation.
He was an active participant with the Indiana Statewide Association of Rural Cooperatives and Farm Electrification Council programs, in the Northern Indiana Electric Heat Institute and in State and in State and National Inspectors' Association, coupled with his knowledge of the National Electrical Code, allowed members and youth in the cooperative's service territory to learn of and use proper wiring techniques. He was one of the first cooperative leaders to work with wind generation; the first built on our system; and the first in Indiana.
He was an active director of the Indiana Farm Electrification Council. He has also been a principal factor in making the Indiana 4-H Electric Program one of the best in the nation. In addition to serving as judge, advisor and counselor for 40 years to state level 4-H and FFA groups, he found time to organize 4-H Electric club programs in White and Pulaski Counties and to serve as their dependable and continuous leader for more than 50 years.
He received numerous awards during his tenure with the REMC.
He was a member of the St. James Lutheran Church, where he was Sunday school Superintendent, teacher, deacon, sang in the choir and was active in the Walther League. He was also a member of the Lutheran Layman's League and Aide Association for Lutherans (A.A.L) branch secretary.
Survivors include sons, Charles A. (Kathleen) Hintzman of West Lafayette and Frederick H. Jr. (Lois) of Orlando, FL; a brother Harold (Neoma) Hintzman of Monticello; sisters, Lorna Robey of Monticello, Norma Mae Miller and Delores Snowberger, both of Chalmers, and Velma Freed of Plymouth; four grandsons and two great-granddaughters.
Two brothers are deceased.
Funeral services were August 8th at St. James Lutheran Church at Reynolds with Rev. Daniel May and Rev. Charles Blakey officiating. Miller-Roscka Funeral Home was in charge of the service.
Burial was in St. James Lutheran Cemetery.

Lena Marie Hintzman
February 8, 1909 - August 3, 2002
Lena Marie "Honey" Hintzman, 93, of Reynolds, died Saturday, August 3, 2002, at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne, after being involved in an auto accident.
She was born in Reynolds on February 8, 1909, to Charles and Emma Hagen Buss. She married Frederick H. Hintzman at St. James Lutheran Church in Reynolds on May 30, 1937. He died August 3, 2002.
She lived in the Reynolds community all of her life. She graduated from St. James Lutheran Day School, and Reynolds High School.
She worked at her brother's hardware store, Buss Hardware Store, in Monticello, from the 1930's until the 1950's. After it was sold to ACE hardware, she worked there until the 1960's.
She was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, where she was a Sunday school and Bible School teacher, and sang in the choir. She was also a member of the Women's Missionary League and a Walther (youth group) leader, both of St. James Lutheran Church. She loved the outdoors.
Survivors include sons, Charles A. (Kathleen) Hintzmam of West Lafayette and Frederick H. Jr. (Lois) Hintzman of Orlando, FL; four grandsons; and two great-granddaughters.
Three brothers and five sisters are deceased.
Funeral services were August 8th, at St. James Lutheran Church with Rev. Daniel May and Rev. Charles Blakey officiating. Miller-Roscka Funeral Home was in charge of the service.
Burial was in St. James Lutheran Cemetery, Reynolds.

Joe 0. Hirt
June 5, 1914 - December 31, 2002
Joe 0. Hirt, 88, of Monticello died Tuesday, December 31, 2002 at his residence.
He was born on June 5, 1914, in Logansport to Benjamin and Lottie Anna Oberlin Hirt. He married Violet Marion on March 29, 1936, at the Church of the Brethren in Buffalo. She survives.
He lived in Monticello for 62 years coming from Beaver Township in Pulaski County. He was in the first class to graduate from Buffalo High School in 1933. He was a member of the Church of the Brethren for over 70 years, and served as a deacon.
He enjoyed collecting arrowheads and playing pool. He enjoyed ice-skating and would skate from Buffalo to Norway Dam in his younger years.
He farmed, worked at Hicks Gas and Carter Block and was employed by Purdue University for 20 years. After retiring from Purdue, he worked at Indiana Beach during the summer months for 19 years.
Surviving with his wife are a "special son" Lewis "Sonny" (Bev) Funk of Monticello; sisters, Ruth (Cliff) Rickleff Crutchfield-Malin of New Whiteland, and Lois (William) Lister of New Smyrna Beach, Fl.; five grandchildren; 11 great grand-children; one great-great-grandson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A brother, Paul Hirt, and sister Mary Christenberry are deceased.
Funeral services were Saturday at Miller-Roscka Funeral Home with Rev. John Mishler and Rev. James Bretzinger officiating.
Burial was in Buffalo Cemetery.

Franklin C. "Frank" Hodge
December 20, 1925 - May 15, 1995
Franklin C. "Frank" Hodge, 69, 8417 Timber Lane, Lafayette, was pronounced dead on arrival Monday, May 15, at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Lafayette, following an apparent heart attack while mowing.
He was born December 20, 1925 in Indianola, Mississippi to Lessie and Freddie Cooper Hodge.
He attended Hollandale High School in Mississippi. Following his junior year in high school, he joined the Navy. He married Gladys Slayton Benker on February 8, 1993 in Columbus, Texas, and she survives.
He was retired from farming, and was working part-time at Globe Valve in Delphi as a security guard. He was a veteran of World War II having served on submarine duty in the Navy.
He was a member of American Legion Post 81 in Monticello, Logansport VFW, and Monticello Eagles.
Surviving with his wife are 3 daughters, Diane Nelson, South Bend, Cathy Hagerty, Bloomington, and Cheryl Read, Columbus; 2 sons, Jim Hedge and Frank Hedge Jr. both of Camden; 3 stepchildren, Diana K. Trapp, Indianapolis, John K. Benker, Columbus, Texas, and Becky Grimsley, Lafayette; 1 brother, Bob Hedge, Squaw Valley, CA; 4 sisters, Louise Massey, Arcola, Mississippi, Marion Hearn, Laton, CA, Inez Hearn, Corcoran, CA, and Wilma Lopaz, Eloy, AZ; 13 grandchildren; 5 step-grandchildren; and 2 step-great-grandchildren.
Friends may call Thursday from 5-9 p.m. at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Hartzler Funeral Home with Rev. Lelan McReynolds officiating.
Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery. Brookston.
Victor P. Hoehne
September 17, 1918 - August 21, 2002
Victor Paul Hoehne, 83, of Brookston, died Wednesday, August 21, at 7:55 p.m. at the Indiana Veterans home in West Lafayette.
He was born Sept. 17, 1918, in Logansport, to Frank and Clara McDonald Hoehne. His marriages were to Donnajeanne Hoehne, who died in 1972 and Audrey Hoehne, who died in 1998.
He was a 1936 graduate of Chalmers High School and of Indiana University, with an education degree.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, Hqs 34th Infantry Division, from 1942-46; and the
Korean War, operation and training staff officer, from 1951-54; and attained the rank of major.
He lived in Brookston since September 1998, moving there from Findlay, Ohio. He lived at the Indiana Veterans Home since Nov. 20, 2001.
He taught and coached in Aurora; worked with Allis-Chalmer Mfg. Co. in LaPorte; was business manager for the Twin Lakes (Monticello) and LaPorte school systems; and was appointed by Gov. Otis Bowen to serve as chairman for five years of the Indiana Education Board (teacher bargaining and arbitration).
Surviving are a son, James Hoehne of LaPorte; daughter, Susan (James) Freel of Findlay, Ohio; special friend, Emma Lou Delp of Brookston; four grandchildren; and a great grandchild.
No funeral was held.
Memorials may be made to the Brookston Federated Church.

Nellie May Hoffman
September 8, 1907 - March 30, 2000
Nellie May Hoffman, 92, died Thursday, March 30, at Parkview Haven Nursing Home, Francesville. She had been ill for three months.
She was born Sept. 8, 1907, to Joseph Arthur and Flora Foy St. Clair, in Cass County. She was married Feb. 27, 1932, to Charlie Hoffman in Winamac. he died Feb. 22, 1992.
She was a graduate of Metea High School in Cass County and was also a graduate of Logansport Business College.
She was a homemaker and had lived most of her life in the Monon area.
She was a member of the Monon Community Church.
She is survived by sons, Bob Hoffman of San Pierre, Jim Hoffman of Winamac, Harold Hoffman, of Fowler and Keith Hoffman, of Rochester; daughters, Donna "Meyer" St. Clair of Kewanna and Alice Thurston of Fowler; brothers, Orren St. Clair of Kewanna and Glen St. Clair of Galveston; 36 grandchildren; 50 great grandchildren; and 18 great-great grandchildren.
Four brothers, three sisters and a grandchild are deceased.
Funeral services were Tuesday at Kellogg Funeral Home, Monon, with the Rev. Don Newman and Mark Timm officiating.
Burial was in Chapel Cemetery, Monon.
Memorials may be given to the Monon Community Church new building program.
Francis J. Holcomb
September 10, 1915 - January 20, 2003
Francis Joseph Holcomb, 87, of Twin Lakes Village, Monticello died Monday, January 20, 2003 at Twin Lakes Village.
He was born September 10, 1915 at Reynolds, to Harry Joseph and Catherine Altman Holcomb. He was educated in the Reynolds school system and was a member of the basketball team. After graduation in 1933, he worked on a construction project building SR 18 west from Brookston.
In 1937, he married Helen I Safford at St Boniface Catholic Church in Lafayette. Soon after the marriage he leased a service station on the west edge of Reynolds from Albert Wiese. With the help of his wife and brother-in-law, Lloyd Safford he began a career of business ownership which lasted until his retirement in 1980. In the ensuing years, he moved his business to a service station at the intersection of highway 24 & 43. During this time he ran a school bus route and established an agriculture limestone business in the Frankfort, Indiana area.
In 1944 he sold his business and entered the U.S. Army taking his basic training at Camp Atterbury in Indiana and Camp Walters in Mineral Wells, Texas.
In 1939 a son was born to the Holcombs. His wife and son joined him in Texas during his training. He served with honor in Patton's 3rd Army in Germany and was discharged as a Staff Sergeant.
Upon his return to Reynolds, he entered the trucking business, which evolved, into an asphalt paving business, operating out of the former Reynolds Lumber and Coal Co. It was during this period he was elected to the Board of Directors of the Bank of Reynolds, a position he held for 30 years.
He maintained a life-long interest in golf, basketball, football and railroading. He was a member of the President's Council at Purdue and a 30-year member of John Purdue Club where he was a "Gold Coat". He was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Reynolds and active in all lay areas of the Church.
His wife, Helen, died in 1977; a brother, John S. Holcomb died in 1936 and a sister Irene C. Holcomb died in 1960.
He married Rita Menk Ruemler on July 5, 1997 and they made their home in Brookston.
Survivors include a son, John L. Holcomb of San Antonio, Texas; a sister Mary Moore, Rochester, Indiana; two step-daughters, Mary (George) Foulks of Monticello, Marjorie (Greg) Asher of Fredericksburg, Va. and five step-sons; Larry (Laurie) Ruemler of Aliquippa, Pa., Dennis Ruemler of Goshen, Ind., Tom (Cindy) Ruemler of Ellettsville, md., Lynn (Debbie) Ruemler of Tulsa, Okla., and Tim (Pam) Ruemler of Bonita Springs, Fla.; 14 step-grandchildren and 3 step-great grandchildren.
Visitation will be Wednesday at the Hartzler Funeral Home in Brookston with a Rosary service at 4 p.m. and calling from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Reynolds with Msgr. Robert Sell officiating.
Interment will be in Tippecanoe Memory Gardens Mausoleum in West Lafayette.
