Lewis Gowdy
Lewis M. Gowdy, 88, of Evansville, died at 3:09 p.m Monday, February 18, 2002, at Deaconess Hospital. He was born April 20, 1913.
Lewis and Gladys had been members of St. James East United Methodist Church for nearly 50 years. Lewis was a native of Carmi in White County, Illinois, before moving to Evansville in 1953. He attended Southern Illinois University and was a graduate of the University of Evansville in 1936.
Lewis worked for Sun Oil Company for over 30 years. He was transferred to Dallas, Texas, in 1970 and returned to Evansville in 1974 when he retired from Sun Oil. He was secretary and treasurer of the Sun Oil Retirement Club. After retirement, he had his own business doing ad valorem tax work for independent oil companies.
Lewis served on the board to the Evansville Protestant Home for 24 years. He was a member of the Evansville Masonic Lodge 64 for over 50 years.

Survivors are his wife of 64 years, Gladys V. (Howell) Gowdy of Evansville; a son, Robert L. Gowdy and his wife, Cindy of Terre Haute, Ind.; grandson, Jeffrey S. Gowdy and his wife, Micki of Indianapolis, granddaughter, Amanda S. Sluder and her husband, Dustin of Evansville, granddaughter, Stephanie J. Espinosa and her husband, Ricardo of Terre Haute, granddaughter, Michelle Boatman and her husband, Bill of Vincennes, Ind.; great-grandchildren, Alexandra Kirchner, Miranda Gowdy, Ian Jose and Maya Sophia Espinosa and Andrea, Brooke and Caitlyn Boatman; several nieces and nephews; and cousins.
Services Thursday at 2 p.m. February 21, 2002, at Alexander East Chapel, Reverend Roy Ice and Reverend William Clayton officiating, burial in Park Lawn Cemetery.
Visitation today, February 20, 2002, from 4 to 7 p.m. and Thursday, February 21, from noon to service time at Alexander East Chapel.

Betty Grabert
Elizabeth "Betty" Grabert, 83, of Evansville and formerly of Mount Vernon, Ind., died at 7:15 p.m. Monday, February 18, 2002, at her residence, The Terrace at Solarbron. She was a member of the Eastern Black Home Economics Club and a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ, where she taught Sunday school for many years, and a member of the Dorcas Society. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Grabert, December 9, 1999.
Surviving are a daughter, Janelle Vogt of Clarksville, Ind.; a son, Keith R. Grabert of San Diego, Calif.; a sister, Dolores Sousley of Evansville; a brother, Frederick Bumb of Evansville; and 2 grandchildren, Scott Vogt and Angela Jackson.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, February 21, 2002, at Immanuel United Church of Christ, 5812 Ford Rd. in Mount Vernon, with burial in the church cemetery.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Austin Funeral Home and from 1 p.m. until service time at the church on Thursday.
Memorial contributions may be made to Immanuel United Church of Christ.
Julia Hayes
Julia L. Hayes, 47, of Evansville, died Saturday, February 16, 2002, at her home of apparent complications of diabetes..
She was born December 10, 1954.
Julia was an active member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Evansville. She was an animal lover. Julia was preceded in death by her mother, Frances (Lane) Hayes, in January 1978. Memorial tributes may be made online at www.mem.com
Survivors are her father, Dr. Thomas P. Hayes of Evansville; stepmother, Geneva T. Hayes of Evansville; brother, Thomas P. Hayes Jr. and his wife, Barbara of Jackson, Mich.; a sister, Claudia Hayes-Hagar of Holland, Mich.; 2 nieces, Annie Hagar of Holland, Mich., and Brittany Hayes; and 2 nephews, Jon Hagar and Cody Hayes.
Services Friday 1 p.m. February 22, 2002, at Alexander North Chapel, Reverend Ken Williams officiating, entombment in Alexander Memorial Park Mausoleum.
Visitation Thursday, February 21, 2002, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Alexander North Chapel.

Charles King
Charles Edwin King, 48, of Montgomery, Ala., formerly of Evansville, died Friday, Feb. 15, 2002, at his home.
He worked for the CSX Railroad for 21 years and owned and operated The Plant Man.
Surviving are his mother, Lavelle King; and a sister, Judy Dugan.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Brooks-Cargile Funeral Home in Montgomery, Ala. Friends may call from 1 p.m. to service time.
Marcella Matherly
Marcella F. Matherly, 75, of Evansville, died at 10:05 a.m. February 18, 2002, at Woodmont Health Campus.
She was born August 7, 1926.
Marcella was a life member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post 1114. She was a life member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 265 and a life member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 7-James Bethel Gresham.
She loved needlework and made beautiful quilts, arts and crafts and made clocks and lamps. She was an avid gardener. Marcella was a wonderful mother and grandmother.
Survivors are her husband of 58 years, Lyman M. Matherly of Evansville; sons, Gale Matherly of Tacoma, Wash., Lyman Matherly of Evansville, Donald Matherly of Grandview, Ind., and David Matherly of St. Joe, Ind., a daughter, Cheryl Kidder of New Salisbury, Ind.; a son, Michael Matherly of Palmyra, Ind.; 16 grandchildren, Mike, David, Chris, Marcie, Chad, Joel, Kyle, Brey, Jamie, Stacy, Donnie, Joan, Jeremy, Nick, Andrew and Aaron; 13 great-grandchildren, Peyton, Cameron, Logan, Dawson, Hunter, Trevor, Rebecca, Kimberly, Gage, William, Valerie, Jasmine and Savanah; brothers, Donald McMillan of Evert, Wash., Milo McMillan of Tacoma, Wash., and Glen McMillan of Minnesota; numerous nieces and nephews; and cousins.

Margaret Memmer
Margaret "Peggy" Memmer, 79, of Evansville died at 5:11 a.m. Tuesday, February 19, 2002, at her residence.
She was born, March 1, 1922.
Peggy was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary Germania Maennerchor.

Survivors are a daughter, Barbara Mann of Evansville; sons, Thomas W. Memmer, David C. Memmer and Jerome P. Memmer, all of Evansville, and Michael J. Memmer of Fort Branch, Ind., and James S. Memmer of Albuquerque, N.M.; 12 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren.
Services Friday 11 a.m. February 22, 2002, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 2701 Franklin St., with prayers at 10:30 a.m. at Alexander North Chapel, Reverend David Nunning officiating, entombment at Alexander Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Jerome Muensterman
Jerome A. Muensterman, 71, of Silver Creek, Ga., formerly of Evansville, died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, in a Rome, Ga., health care center.
He had served in the Evansville Police Department for 27 years.
Surviving are his wife, Mary; a daughter; Joni Evans; three stepdaughters, Shirley Elkins, Dorothy Asdell and Yvonne Soprano; a stepson, Wayne Britt; and three grandchildren.
Private services are pending. Daniel's Funeral Home in Rome, Ga. is handling arrangements.
Louis Reuter Sr.
Louis T. Reuter, Sr. 71, of Evansville, passed away on Monday, February 18, 2002.
He retired after 27 years as a State Police Officer. He was a retired veteran of the United States Navy. He loved thoroughbred horses.
He is survived by his wife, June of Evansville; 2 sons, Louis T. Reuter Jr. of Evansville and Edward A. Reuter of Columbus, Ind.; 4 grandchildren, Michelle Reuter of Bloomington, Ind., Melissa Reuter of Chicago and Ashley Swope and Brian Reuter, both of Evansville. Services will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, February 22, at Ziemer Funeral Home North Chapel. Revs. Dennis Aud and Mark Dodd will be officiating.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Campground Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army 9-11 Fund.
