Jim Russo
Huntington native Jim Russo, a former Orioles scout who gained national recognition for the reports he gave Baltimore on major league teams, died following a lengthy illness. He was 81.
Russo, who spent 33 years with the Orioles, died Sunday at his home in Grover, Mo.
He was born April 22, 1992, in Huntington, to John and Lena Russo. He was married to Betty J. Miller. She preceded him in death in 1980.
Russo served in the Army during World War II and was awarded a Bronze Star. He broke into pro baseball as an announcer for a minor league team in Riverside, Calif. He also was a part-time scout for the St. Louis Browns, and proved so adept at identifying talent that the Browns gave him a full-time scouting job in 1951.
He was one of 10 scouts who came to Baltimore three years later when the franchise became the Orioles.
He was an amateur, major league and advance scout, and also a special assistant, then retired in 1986. Among those he was responsible for signing were pitchers Jim Palmer and Dave McNally, first baseman Boog Powell and second baseman Davey Johnson.
Russo also recommended the December 1965 trade in which Baltimore acquired outfielder Frank Robinson from Cincinnati for pitcher Milt Pappas and two other players.
His reports on the Dodgers were cited as a factor in Baltimore’s four-game sweep of the 1966 World Series. He wrote of his life in the book “Super Scout,” co-written by another Huntington native, Bob Hammel.
The Orioles’ Scout of the Year Award, inaugurated last year, is named for Russo.
Survivors include a sister, Marry Buchheit; sons Ronald Russo, of St. Louis, and Clifford Russo, of St. Charles, Mo.; daughters Susan Wrinkle of Barnhart, Mo., Jennifer Baehr of St. Albans, Mo., and Nancy Blakeley of Wildwood, Mo.; and seven grandchildren.
