Roy E. DeMerchant
Roy E. DeMerchant, 84, died at 6:55 a.m. Friday (Feb. 23, 2001) at Norwood Nursing Center.
Mr. DeMerchant was a former resident of Royal Oak, Mich., where he was a letter carrier for the post office for 31 years. After retiring in 1971, he lived in St. Petersburg, Fla., until 1989. He then moved to Elkhart and lived at the Hubbard Hills retirement facility until last year.
He was a long-time active member of the Missionary Church in Royal Oak, Mich., and St. Petersburg, Fla. He served as treasurer of the Royal Oak Missionary Church and as a lay member of the former Great Lakes District Board of the Missionary Church. He was a 60-year member of the National Association of Letter Carriers.
He was born April 8, 1919, in New Brunswick, Canada, to Wilson and Myrtle Estey DeMerchant. He was a 1935 graduate of Dondero High School in Royal Oak, Mich. His marriage was June 25, 1938, in Roseville, Mich., to the former Mereda V. Amstutz. She died on Jan. 10, 2000.
Survivors include two sons, Rev. Paul DeMerchant, Huntington, and Dr. Blanchard DeMerchant, St. Charles, Mo.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Eugene DeMerchant and Ralph DeMerchant.
Calling is from 2-4 p.m. Saturday at Myers Funeral Home, Huntington Chapel, where a private family memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday.

Herman J.W. Sundermann
Herman J.W. Sundermann, 83, 518 German St., died at 7:45 p.m. Sunday (Feb. 25, 2001) at the Norwood Nursing Center.
Mr. Sundermann was the president and chief executive officer of Lillsun Manufacturing in Huntington, a business he started in 1951, which manufactured Bakers Wooden-Ware and Pizza Peels. He was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church, Roanoke; Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2689, Huntington; American Legion Post 85, Huntington; and the Silver Wings. He received his pilot’s license in 1940.
He was born Dec. 27, 1917 in Huntington to William and Meta Brandt Sundermann. He married Lillian Holley Oct. 28, 1941 in Huntington. His wife survives.
Also surviving are a son, William L. Sundermann, Huntington; a daughter, Mrs. Michael T. (Sharon) Ulrich, Huntington; two sisters, Amanda Eickhoff and Marie Harrell, both of Huntington; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by an infant brother.
Calling is 2-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Myers Funeral Home, Huntington Chapel.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Faith Lutheran Church, 3416E-900N, Roanoke, with Pastor Robert Meyer officiating. Burial will be at the Mt. Hope Cemetery.

Lucyle Wilson
Lucyle Wilson, 93, Springport, died early Sunday (Feb. 25, 2001).
She retired from the food service department at Huntington College in 1986 after 28 years of service. She had lived in Henry County since 1986 and was a member of the Springport Christian Church, Springport. She served as a missionary in Sierra Leone from 1961-64.
She was born Sept. 14, 1907 in Enid, Okla., to Lawrence and Elmetta Rector Thornburg.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Dale (Bethann) Yost, Springport; two sons, Garry Wilson and Richard Wilson, both of Springport; a sister, Roberta Ritchie, Middletown; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.
Calling is 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service, 3406 S. Memorial Dr., New Castle.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, with calling one hour prior to services, at the Springport Christian Church, Springport. Burial will be at Woodlawn Christian Cemetery, Springport.

Joseph A. Hunckler
Joseph A. Hunckler, 38, Indianapolis, a former resident of Huntington, died Thursday (Feb. 22, 2001) at the Loyola Medical Center, Chicago.
Mr. Hunckler was a senior consultant for financial advisory services at Hewlett-Packard. He was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church, Indianapolis, and a former member of SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Huntington. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 1014, Huntington, where he was a Third Degree Knight. He graduated from Huntington Catholic High School in 1980, the University of Notre Dame in 1984, and earned a master’s degree in business administration from Indiana University in 1986.
He was born March 11, 1962, in Huntington to Paul and Blanche Marie Sturm Hunckler. His parents survive and live in Huntington. He married Sally M. McNamara May 23, 1987, at SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Huntington. His wife died April 28, 1994.
Survivors include a daughter, Rachael Hunckler, Indianapolis; two sisters, Anne Hommes, Corvallis, Oregon, and Mary Kay Gleason, Minneapolis, Minn.; five brothers, Charles Hunckler, Cincinnati, Ohio, John Hunckler, West Lafayette, Francis Hunckler, Huntington, Matthew Hunckler, South Bend, and Robert Hunckler, Port Huron, Mich.
He is also survived by his fiance, Sally O’Rourke, Berkshire, United Kingdom, who he was to marry July 14.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Gregory Hunckler, who died Sept. 24, 2000.
Calling is 4-8 p.m. Sunday at the Hart Funeral Home, with recitation of the rosary at 6 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 840 Cherry St., with Father Ron Rieder officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

May E. Auer
May Elizabeth Auer, 94, a resident of the Lutheran Home in Fort Wayne, died at 10:40 p.m. Monday (Feb. 19, 2001) at the home.
She was a former resident of 533 Whitelock St.
Mrs. Auer worked for many years as a bookkeeper for the former Moon & Moon Cleaners in Huntington. She was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church. She graduated from Huntington High School in 1925.
She was born Feb. 9, 1907, in Huntington, a daughter of Edward and May Groves Kline. She married Edward Auer on April 19, 1940, in Huntington. He died in 1997.
Survivors include two daughters, Janice Williams of New York and Joan Rosenthal of Arizona; four grandchildren and a great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Joseph Kline, Herbert Kline and George Kline.
Calling is from 3-6 p.m. Friday at Myers Funeral Home, Huntington Chapel, and 9:30-10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Lutheran Home Chapel, 6701 S Anthony Blvd., Fort Wayne. Services will be at the Lutheran Home Chapel at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, with Chaplain Roger Olson officiating.
Burial will be at Pilgrims Rest Cemetery.

Marian A. Baker
Marian Alice Baker, 81, formerly of 229 Vine St., Huntington, died at 1:45 am. Tuesday (Feb. 20, 2001) at Huntington Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Baker a clerk at Woolworth’s for 18 years and worked for Art Chemical, Huntington. She was a 50-year member of the Evangelical United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Martha Circle of the church, TOPS, Neta Etta Chi and the Grandmothers Club, all in Huntington.
She was born on July 5, 1919, in Niles, Ohio, to Ralph and Millicent Graham Mann. On April 16, 1939, in Wabash, she married Kenneth Baker. He died in 1978.
Survivors include a son, Barry Baker, Huntington; a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Norma) Fisher, Huntington; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Calling will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Evangelical United Methodist Church, 1000 Flaxmill Rd., and one hour before the 11 a.m. Friday services, also at the church. Rev. Marti Lundy will officiate.
Burial will be at the Pleasant Chapel Cemetery, Jackson Township.

Grace L. Becker
Grace L. Becker, 76, 202 Wabash Circle, died at 5 p.m. Monday (Feb. 19, 2001) at her home.
Mrs. Becker was a production worker at Square D Corporation, Huntington, for more than 30 years, retiring in 1987. She was a member of the Markle United Methodist Church.
She was born on Dec. 31, 1924, in Huntington, to Herman and Marie Littlefield Houser. On Nov. 29, 1942, in Markle, she married Max E. Becker. He died on Feb. 28, 1993.
Survivors include a brother, Hubert Houser, Huntington; a sister, Lila Pond, Crothersville; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Terrel E. Becker; and infant daughter, Sandra Becker; and two sisters, Sarah J. Hite and Vivian Houser Rossi.
Calling will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Myers Funeral Home, Huntington Chapel, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday. Rev. Tim Dilley will officiate at the service.
Burial will be at the Markle Cemetery.
