Loren R. Karchner
Loren R. Karchner, 99, died at 3:15 p.m. Monday (Sept. 4, 2000) at the Colonial Oaks Retirement Center, Marion, where he was a resident.
Mr. Karchner retired from Bell-Fiber, Marion, in 1966 after 29 years of service. He was a member of the Van Buren United Methodist Church and Van Buren Masonic Lodge 711, both of Van Buren; the Scottish Rite of Fort Wayne; and a life member of Order of Eastern Star Chapter 26, Lakeland, Fla. He had resided at Colonial Oaks Retirement Center, Marion, since 1986.
He was born July 9, 1901, in Nescopeck, Pa., to Samuel F. and Nellie Roat Karchner. He moved to Indiana in 1929. His first marriage was to Hazel Mowery in 1935; she died in 1969. His second marriage was to Leah Wantland in 1970; she died in 1999.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Don (Donna) Zent, Van Buren; a son, Elwood Karchner, Huntington; three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Patty Lou Karchner; and a son, Darrell Lee Karchner.
Calling is 2-8 p.m. Wednesday, with Masonic services at 8 p.m., at the Ferguson Funeral Home, 201 W. Main, Van Buren. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home with Rev. Allen Kahler and Rev. Blake J. Neff officiating. Burial will be at Grant Memorial Park, Marion.
Preferred memorials are to the Van Buren United Methodist Church.
Howard K. Harrell
Howard K. Harrell, 78, 11870S-700W-35, Marion, died at 4:34 p.m. Wednesday (Aug. 30, 2000) at Marion General Hospital.
Mr. Harrell, a graduate of Banquo High School, was a self-employed farmer and had also worked in production at RCA in Marion for 16 years. He retired in 1984.
He was born March 7, 1922, in Grant County. He married Betty Bradford Sept. 17, 1944; his wife survives.
Additional survivors include two sons, Dan Harrell of Marion and Richard Harrell of Upland; two daughters, Donna K. Spath of Elwood and Linda Masters of Marion; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Calling is 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Friday at Raven Funeral Home, 1202 Kem Rd., Marion, where services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. Rick Jett and Roger Foggin will officiate. Burial will be at the Van Buren Cemetery.
Thomas G. ‘Tom’ Montana
Thomas G. “Tom” Montana, 61, Rockford, Ill., died at 1:25 p.m. Tuesday (Aug. 29, 2000) at his home.
Mr. Montana had been employed at J. L. Clark, Rockford, for 20 years. He had also been employed in the Sears Automotive Department. and for several real estate agencies in Rockford. He was a member of St. Edward’s Catholic Church, Rockford, and had served in the Marine Corps Reserve. He had been a resident of Rockford for most of his life.
He was born March 27, 1939, in Rockford to Charles Lippe and Carmela Montana. He married Helena R. Tomaszewski in Chicago Aug. 22, 1981. His wife survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Thomas Montana Jr. of Dallas, Texas, and Mark Montana of Rockford; three daughters, Catherine Montana and Elisabeth Montana, both of Rockford, and Mrs. David (Lynn) Frederick of Indiana; a brother, Alfred Seehaver of Arizona; and a sister, Rose Swanson of Rockford.
Calling is from 5-7 p.m. Friday at the Fred C. Olson Funeral Chapels Ltd., East Chapel, 1001 Second Ave., Rockford.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, with calling from 9-9:45 a.m., at St. Edward’s Catholic Church, 3026 11th St., Rockford. Father James Murphy will officiate.
Burial will be at the Calvary Cemetery, Rockford.

Roy F. Spilker
Roy F. Spilker, 56, Indianapolis, died Tuesday (Aug. 29, 2000) at the Indiana University Hospital.
Mr. Spilker had been an attorney in private practice since 1997. He had previously been the corporate council for Budget Rent-A-Car and had been in private practice for 15 years prior to working for Budget. He had been employed by General Motors while attending law school. He was a graduate of the General Motors Institute and the Indiana University School of Law. He was a member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church and he was an Eagle Scout.
He was born March 28, 1944, in Indianapolis to Roy W. and Beaulah Bradley Spilker. His mother survives. He married Renée D. Parrett, who was formerly of Huntington. She survives.
Also surviving are a son, Kendall F. Spilker; three daughters, Kristine R. Spilker, Kimberly A. Spilker and Maggie L. Spilker; two brothers, John W. Spilker and David A. Spilker; and two grandchildren.
Calling will be held from 9 a.m. until the 10 a.m. funeral service Saturday and following the service at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, 100 W. 86th St., Indianapolis.
Burial will be private.

Mary Catherine Bucher
Mary Catherine Lenwell Bucher, 86, Fort Wayne, died Tuesday morning (Aug. 29, 2000) at her home.
Mrs. Bucher was a member of the United Methodist Church and was retired from Montgomery Ward, Fort Wayne.
She was born June 5, 1914, in Huntington, a daughter of Clyde and Ruth Maples Lenwell. She married Roscoe Bucher Nov. 21, 1937, in Huntington; her husband died April 30, 1973.
Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Thomas (Carol) Whitner of New Haven, and Susan Robinson and Donna Wible, both of Fort Wayne; a sister, Anna Jane Stanley of Huntington; a brother, James E. Lenwell of Fort Wayne; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Lew Lenwell, Fred Lenwell and Donald Lenwell; and three grandchildren.
Calling is 2-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Thursday at D.O. McComb and Sons Mortuary, 6301 Fairfield Ave., Fort Wayne. Services will be held at the mortuary at 11 a.m. Friday, with burial at Coventry Memorial Gardens, Fort Wayne.
Shirley A. Trimble
Shirley A. Trimble, 64, of Griffith, died Tuesday (Aug. 29, 2000) at home.
Mrs. Trimble was a partner of Trimble & Sons Auction in Griffith. She was a graduate of Huntington Catholic High School and a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Huntington.
She was born Jan. 31, 1936 in Quincy, Mass., daughter of Fredrick "Scoop" and Lucille Bartrom Millner. Her mother survives in Huntington. On Nov. 28, 1957 in Huntington County she married Bob Trimble, who survives in Griffith.
Survivors also include two sons, Dick Trimble of Hobart, and Joe Trimble of Crown Point; a sister, Maxine Roe of Griffith; and four grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father and a sister, Patricia Wonderly.
Calling is 2-9 p.m. Thursday at Kuiper Funeral Home, 9039 Kleinman Rd., Highland where service is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday with Rev. Dennis Hicks officiating.
Cremation will follow.

Georgiana L. Gorrell
Georgiana L. Gorrell, 84, Fort Wayne, died at 1:40 p.m. Saturday (Aug. 26, 2000) at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne.
Mrs. Gorrell, a 1934 graduate of Ossian High School, was self-employed in the restaurant business.
She was born Sept. 10, 1915, in Wells County, the daughter of Jacob and Neola Judd Kiser. Her first marriage was to Jewel Fryback, who preceded her in death. Her second marriage was to Joseph Gorrell, who also preceded her in death.
Survivors include two sisters, Mary Breiner of Ashley and Virginia (no last name available) of Bluffton; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Larry N. Fryback.
There are no calling hours. Graveside memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Hoverstock Cemetery, Zanesville, with Pastor Donald Nord officiating.

Donald Keith Leas
Donald Keith Leas, 73, Bluffton, died at 6:15 p.m. Sunday (Aug. 27, 2000) at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Cleveland.
Mr. Leas owned and operated Leas Feed Co., Montpelier, from 1956 to 1988. He served on the Montpelier and Blackford County school boards for six years and was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church, Hartford City, and its Men's Club. He was a former resident of Huntington and had farmed in Huntington and Wells Counties. He graduated from Jackson Township High School, Wells County, in 1945.
He was born April 23, 1927, in Bluffton, a son of Ralph Lugar Leas and Ruey Glee Slusher Leas. He married Virginia M. Stinson July 24, 1949, in Jackson Township, Wells County. His wife survives.
Additional survivors include three sons, Ted A. Leas of Hartford City and Terry K. Leas and Tim D. Leas, both of Montpelier; four brothers, Gail Leas and Jack Leas, both of Warren, Jim Leas of Montpelier, and Bob Leas of Columbia City; a sister, Lois Jane Carpenter, Bluffton; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Lillian Bradford, and a brother, Norman Leas.
Calling is 2-8 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at Grace United Methodist Church, 312 W. Washington St., Hartford City. Services will be held at the church at 2 p.m. Wednesday, with Rev. Steve Kaehr officiating. Burial will be at Gardens of Memory Cemetery, Muncie.
