Gladys I. Powell
Gladys Isabelle Powell, 94, a resident of the Community Care Center in Wabash, died at the home at 4:25 p.m. Tuesday (June 13, 2000).
Mrs. Powell, a former resident of Lagro, worked as a cook at Lagro and Southwood High Schools for 25 years, retiring in 1976. She and her husband also farmed. She was a60-year member of the Lincolnville United Methodist Church and was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 90, Wabash.
She was born Feb. 17, 1906 in Sanilac County, Mich., a daughter of John Ford and Anna Diem Ford. She married Wayne Powell Aug. 15, 1932; he died Nov. 19, 1977.
Surviving are two sisters, Ann M. Julian, Westland, Mich., and Wilhelmina F. Loranger, Dearborn, Mich.
She was preceded in death by a son, a brother, and five sisters.
Calling is 2-8 p.m. Thursday at the Grandstaff-Hentgen Manchester Avenue Chapel, 1177 Manchester Ave., Wabash. An Eastern Star service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with funeral services there at 2 p.m. Friday. Rev. Melissa Rice will officiate. Burial will be at the Lagro cemetery.
DeVon Bair
DeVon Bair, 59, Engle Street, died at 3:27 p.m. Tuesday (Oct. 10, 2000) at the Markle Health Care Center.
Mr. Bair worked as a powdercoat painter for Pulley-Kellam in Huntington. He was a member of Bass Masters.
He was born Dec. 29, 1940, in Huntington, a son of Walter and Leora Grush Bair.
Survivors include two sons, Richard C. Bair and Jamie D. Bair, both of Huntington; four daughters, Marie R. Plasterer of Warren, Elaina Jo Ailes of Andrews, Barbara L. Land of Huntington, and Deborah S. Stalls of North Carolina; three brothers, Dorman Bair of Andrews, Darrell Bair of Huntington, and Dexter Bair of Keystone; four sisters, Lelia Trauterman of Antwerp, Ohio, Captola Denbo and Madalyn Bair, both of Huntington, Betty Anderson of Clear Lake, Calif.; 15 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Kil-So-Quah boat ramp with Rev. John Mishler officiating. Myers Funeral Home, Huntington Chapel, was in charge of arrangements.

Roger Garretson
Roger Garretson, 74, died at 6:05 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 11, 2000) at Miller’s Merry Manor, Huntington, where he had been a resident.
Mr. Garretson had worked at the Woolworth’s in Huntington for 14 years, after which he became a plumber. He had formerly been a resident of Killeen, Texas, for 28 years and had lived in Andrews since 1994.
He was born Aug. 22, 1926, in Huntington County to Clarence and Mary Elizabeth Garretson. He married Billie Jean Carter Sept. 29, 1945, in Huntington. His wife died May 10, 1988.
Survivors include two sons, Mike Garretson of Andrews and Jerry Garretson of Coppers Cove, Texas; a daughter, Mrs. Don (Raven) Chapin of Huntington; two brothers, Willard Garretson and Paul Garretson, both of Huntington; three sisters, Marge Cole of Marion, Pat Herrick of Roanoke, and Ruby Lambert of Huntington; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters.
Calling is 4-8 p.m. Friday at the Deal-Robbins & Van Gilder Funeral Home, Huntington Chapel.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Killeen Cemetery
in Killeen, Texas.
Charlotte A. Rose
Charlotte Ann Rose, 70, Memphis, Tenn., died at 7:35 a.m. Sunday (Oct. 8, 2000) at Methodist Central Hospital in Memphis.
She was born in Huntington on April 11, 1930 to Donald Rose and Dorothy Wiley Rose and was a graduate of Huntington High School in 1948.
She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Victor (Marcille) Eliason, Lapel, Ind., and Sharon Rose, Bellview, Mich.
Calling hours are from noon to 1 p.m. on Thursday at Bailey-Love Mortuary, with services to follow. Rev. Rod Shirk will officiate.
Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery
in Huntington.
Stella I. Sell
Stella I. Sell, 99, died at 2:37 a.m. Wednesday (Oct. 11, 2000) at Miller’s Merry Manor in Huntington.
Mrs. Sell was a former resident of Wilkerson Street. She was self-employed for 18 years as a wallpaper hanger and interior decorator. She had worked for Model Engineering and Huntington Electric, retiring in 1972, and operated a home laundry and ironing business for 15 years.
She was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, the church’s Altar and Rosary Sodality, National Federation of Grandmothers Clubs of America, Harvest Center, and the Senior Citizens Band.
She was born Oct. 31, 1900 in Holgate, Ohio, a daughter of Lawrence Michael and Anna Kathryn Homier Okuly. She married Philip F. Sell Nov. 24, 1920, in Huntington; her husband died Sept. 11, 1967.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Clyde (Helen) Stevens, Huntington; six grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Bernadine Magner; a son, Paul L. Sell; two grandchildren; five brothers, Herman Okuly, William Okuly, Henry “Harry” Okuly, Bernard Okuly, and Charles Okuly; and two sisters, Alfreda Fetters and Kathryn Wineke.
Calling is 4-8 p.m. Friday at the Myers Funeral Home, Huntington Chapel, with recitation of the Rosary at 6:30 p.m. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, with Father Ron Rieder officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Marian A. Spahr
Marian A. Spahr, 34, Peru, died at 2 a.m. Tuesday (Oct. 10, 2000) at Dukes Memorial Hospital in Peru.
Spahr worked as a nurse at the Indiana University Medical Center and then assisted in her husband’s medical office until 1983. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Peru after moving from Indianapolis in 1992.
She was born on June 20, 1916, to Harry Cleveland and Nora Mae Leonard Roberts. She was married to Dr. John F. Spahr, Jr. on May 4, 1941. Her husband survives.
Other survivors include two sons, John F. Spahr III, Pensacola, Fla., and Robert A. Spahr, Peru; two daughters, Mary A. Dunfee, Spencer, Ind., and Susan E. Thomas, Indianapolis; two sisters, Beatrice Noffke, Fairland, Ind., and Harriett Hopper, Wanamaker, Ind.; a brother, Jesse Roberts, Greenfield, Ind.; and 11 grandchildren.
Spahr was preceded in death by one brother, Albert Roberts.
Calling hours are from 6-8 p.m. Thursday and 1 p.m. Friday at the Eikenberry-Eddy Funeral Home, 84 W. Main St., Peru.
Services are at 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, with Rev. George McCarty officiating.
Burial will be at the Mt. Hope Cemetery
in Peru.

Hobart D. Carmichael
Hobart Dale Carmichael, 81, 2045 Manito Trail, died at 1:20 p.m. Monday (Oct. 9, 2000) at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne.
Mr. Carmichael had been a tool and die maker for the Detroit Diesel Allison Division of the General Motors Corp., Speedway, retiring Dec. 31, 1974, after 34 years of service. He was a member of the Speedway United Methodist Church, Speedway, and Retired United Auto Workers Local 933, Indianapolis. He returned to Huntington in 1991.
He was born Nov. 16, 1918, in Banquo to Fred D. and Ruth Carl Carmichael. He graduated from Banquo High School in 1936 and served in the Army Air Force during World War II.
Survivors include a son, John D. Carmichael of Indianapolis; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Gary (Cindy) Yeiter of Huntington; two brothers, Garl E. Carmichael of Marion and J. Harold Carmichael of Woodward, Okla.; a sister, Ann Anderson of Fort Wayne; and five grandchildren.
Calling will be held from 3 p.m. until the 8 p.m. funeral service Wednesday at the Bailey-Love Mortuary, 35 W. Park Dr. Rev. Jonathan Heaslet and Rev. Chester Mayflower will officiate.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Floral Park Cemetery, Indianapolis.
Floyd L. Fairchild
Floyd L. Fairchild, 65, Swan Street, died at 8:15 a.m. Monday (Oct. 9, 2000) at his home.
Mr. Fairchild had worked for C&M Plating in Roanoke for 29 years and had also worked at the Maco Corp. in Huntington before retiring in 1997.
He was born Aug. 22, 1935, in Whitley County to Herbert and Myrtle DeWitt Fairchild. He married Violet Wall on March 24, 1964, at the First Church of the Nazarene in Huntington. His wife survives.
Also surviving are four sons, Michael Fairchild, Thomas Fairchild, Ronald Fairchild and Teddy Fairchild, all of Huntington; a daughter, Candy Borntreger of Huntington; eight brothers, William Fairchild of South Whitley, Dewayne Fairchild and Harold Fairchild, both of Columbia City, Ronald Fairchild of Bippus, Donald Shaw of Churubusco, and Raymond Shaw, William Shaw and Joe Shaw, all of North Carolina; a sister, Wonita Garreg of Woodburn; and 10 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Fairchild and Donald Fairchild; and a sister, Carolyn Gillgen.
Calling is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Myers Funeral Home, Huntington Chapel, where funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday. Rev. Richard Frederick will officiate. Burial will be at the Gardens of Memory Cemetery.

Kermit K. Runkle
Kermit K. Runkle, 84, Marion, died at 11:30 a.m. Monday (Oct. 9, 2000) at the Marion General Hospital.
Mr. Runkle retired from Greene Line Manufacturing, Marion, in 1980 after 20 years of service. He was a charter member of the Kem Road Baptist Church, Marion. He was a past president of Ace of Spades Motorcycle Club and served on the board of directors for the Marion Grant County Senior Center.
He was born July 16, 1916, in Wells County to Clayton E. and Lula M. Kilander Runkle. He married Betty Ross on Dec. 23, 1936. His wife survives.
Also surviving are a son, Philip Eugene Runkle of Olean, N.Y.; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Duane Alan Runkle and Wendell LeRoy Runkle; two brothers, Kyler Runkle and Kenneth Runkle; and two sisters, Pauline Wamsley and Irene Helms.
Calling is 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Needham-Storey Funeral Service, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave., Marion, where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Rev. Ron Hon will officiate. Burial will be at the Lancaster Cemetery, Huntington County.
