Lucille Avila
Lucille Avila, 97, died at 9:50 p.m. Tuesday (Aug. 15, 2000) at the Renaissance Village Nursing Home in Fort Wayne.
Services are pending at the Roanoke Memorial Chapel in Roanoke.
Jay V. Haiflich
Jay V. Haiflich, 90, Bluffton, a former resident of Uniondale, died at 9:45 a.m. Sunday (Aug. 13, 2000) at the Caylor-Nickel Medical Center, Bluffton.
Mr. Haiflich farmed in Wells County and had also been an insurance salesman with the Mutual Insurance Co. for 27 years. He was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Uniondale. He served as secretary of the Horeb Cemetery
for many years and was instrumental in relocating the cemetery to its present location.
He was born June 14, 1910, in Wells County to William A. and Rosetta Maddux Haifley. He graduated from Rockcreek High School, Wells County, in 1928. He married Gladys M. Keller June 18, 1932, in Uniondale. His wife survives.
He is also survived by a sister, Leota M. Kline, Uniondale.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Raymond H. Haflich, and a sister, Dessie Sparks.
Calling is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 a.m. until the 10 a.m. funeral service Wednesday at the Myers Funeral Home, Markle Chapel. Rev. Mark Cleaveland will officiate.
Burial will be at the Horeb Cemetery, Markle.

William P. Wimmer
William Perry Wimmer, 73, rural Huntington County, died at 3:50 a.m. Monday (Aug. 14, 2000) at his home.
Mr. Wimmer was a lifetime farmer. He was a member of the Second Salem Baptist Church in Huntington and the Van Buren American Legion. He served in the Army during World War II.
He was born Oct. 16, 1926, in Huntington County to Perry and Georgia Stevens Wimmer. He graduated from Banquo High School in 1944. He married Patricia Lee Smith Jan. 30, 1948, in Marion. His wife survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Leroy Wimmer, North Manchester, and William Wimmer, Columbia City; a daughter, Mrs. David (Helen Elizabeth) Acosta, Higgins, Ark.; a sister, Mrs. Geneva Taylor of Marion; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister.
There will be no calling hours. Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Mt. Etna Cemetery, Mt. Etna, with Rev. L. Michael Wilson officiating. Burial will follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mt. Etna United Methodist Church Building Fund, c/o McDonald Funeral Home, 104 S. Main St., LaFontaine, IN 46940.
Lewis E. Bigelow
Lewis E. Bigelow, 75, 28 Chestnut St., Andrews, died at 2:30 a.m. Sunday (Aug. 13, 2000) at the Norwood Nursing Center.
Mr. Bigelow, a life resident of Huntington County, retired from the Maco Corp., Huntington, in 1985. He had also worked with the construction crew for the Erie Railroad for 12 years. He was a member of the Church of the Brethren in Andrews. He served in the Army during World War II, receiving a Bronze Star during the war for action in the European Theater.
He was born Sept. 13, 1924, in Huntington County to Everett and Bertha Hodson Bigelow. He married Elizabeth M. Crago July 14, 1963, in Andrews. His wife survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Rodney Bigelow of Tallahassee, Fla., and Raymond Bigelow of Andrews; a daughter, Mrs. Chris (Mona Jean) Gregoriou of Chicago; two stepsons, Robert Clabaugh of Warren and Michael Clabaugh of Andrews; a stepdaughter, Mrs. James (Cheryl) Agee of Kingsport, Tenn.; a brother, John Bigelow of Carlsbad, N.M.; two sisters, Mrs. Wilbert (Phyllis) Detamore of Andrews and Mrs. Milton (Carolyn) Toner of Tampa, Fla.; and seven grandchildren.
A stepdaughter, Karen Hood, preceded him in death.
Calling is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Bailey-Love Mortuary, where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Rev. Jerry Felts will officiate.

Robert E. Holmes
Robert E. Holmes, 72, North Webster, a former resident of Franklin Street, died at 7:34 a.m. Friday (Aug. 11, 2000) at his home.
Mr. Holmes was employed by the Huntington Fire Department from January 1954 to March 1985, serving as fire chief from 1968 to 1976 and serving as lieutenant from 1976 until his retirement.
He was a member of the Oswego Baptist Church.
He was born in Huntington on May 14, 1929, to Lawrence Holmes and Crystal Harris Holmes. He married Martha Gingrich Sept. 14, 1949, in Huntington. She died on Dec. 24, 1972. He married Ruth Stephens Jan. 2, 1976, in Huntington. She survives in North Webster.
Other survivors include three sons, Greg D. Holmes, Angola, Jeffery A. Holmes, Fort Wayne, and Jerry W. Holmes, Adrian, Mich.; two brothers, LaMar Holmes, Stafford, Texas, and Marcus “Ed” Holmes, Huntington; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Besides his first wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Holmes.
Calling will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Deal-Robbins & Van Gilder Funeral Home, where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday. Rev. James Buyer will officiate at the service.
Burial will be at the Gardens of Memory.

Robert M. Smith
Robert M. Smith, 85, 1695E-1200N, Roanoke, died at noon Friday (Aug. 11, 2000) at his residence.
Mr. Smith was a Jackson Township farmer. He attended Emmanuel Community Church, Fort Wayne.
He was born on Sept. 16, 1915, in Huntington, to Paris and Fern Sheets Smith. On March 20, 1935, he married Eileen Miller. She died in December 1994.
Survivors include two sons, Terry L. Smith and Richard R. Smith, both of Fort Wayne; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Besides his wife, a brother, Orville Smith, preceded him in death.
Calling will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Hart Funeral Home, where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Rev. Dennis Miller will officiate at the services.
Burial will be at Glenwood Cemetery, Roanoke.

Clifford E. Wyatt
Clifford E. Wyatt, 81, Warren, died at 10:50 a.m. Friday (Aug. 11, 2000) at the United Methodist Memorial Home, Warren.
Mr. Wyatt was a farmer in Huntington County. He was a 1937 graduate of Rock Creek High School. He attended the Plum Tree United Church of Christ and was a member and a past master of Markle Lodge 453 F. and A.M.
Mr. Wyatt was born June 4, 1919, in Rock Creek Township to Grover and Elizabeth Helkman Wyatt. He married Helen Baker Feb. 24, 1947, in Fort Wayne. She died July 10, 1989.
Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Glenn (Wanda) Bonebrake, Warren.
Calling will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the United Methodist Memorial Home. Services will be at the home at 10 a.m. Monday with Rev. John Wallace officiating.
Burial will be at the Star of Hope Cemetery.
The Markle Chapel of the Myers Funeral Home, 415 N. Lee St., is in charge of arrangements.
Margretha Coble
Margretha Coble, 73, 9253W-1000N, died at 1 p.m. Thursday (Aug. 10, 2000) at Huntington Memorial Hospital.
She was born April 17, 1927, in Huntington, to Ralph and Martha Etta Barnes Ervin.
Mrs. Coble, a life-long resident of Huntington County, owned “Big Ernie’s” for 12 years from 1979-91. She attended Central Christian Church in Huntington and was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter 267 in Okemos, Mich. She was also a former Fourth District President while a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2919 in South Whitley.
Her marriage was Dec. 12, 1945, in Huntington, to Ernest D. Coble. He died on Jan. 31, 1997.
Survivors include one son, Ervin L. Coble, Huntington; two daughters, Mrs. John (Patricia A.) Smith, Phoenix, Ariz., and Mrs. Thomas (Mary R.) Elick, Huntington; one brother, Thomas Ervin, Fort Wayne; three sisters, Gertrude Kohr, and Mrs. Wayne (Marthetta) Landrum, both ofOld Town, Fla., and Mrs. Fredrick (Elaine) Hunnicutt, Huntington; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Calling is from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the Bailey-Love Mortuary, 35 W. Park Dr.
Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Monday at the mortuary with Rev. Cameron Douglas officiating.
Burial will be at Funk Cemetery, Bippus.
