Lawrence Wade
Lawrence Wade, 78, a resident of the Timbercrest Church of the Brethren Home, North Manchester, died at 6:42 a.m. Saturday (March 4, 2000) at the Wabash County Hospital.
Mr. Wade was a native of Andrews and the former superintendent of the Metropolitan School District of Wabash County. He was a 1939 graduate of Andrews High School and was an Army veteran of World War II.
Mr. Wade held degrees from Manchester College and Indiana University. He began his teaching career at Linlawn High School in 1948, becoming principal at Chippewa High School in 1952 and at White’s in 1955. After eight years at White’s, he became an assistant principal at Southwood in 1962.
He was named assistant superintendent of the MSD of Wabash County in 1964, and was appointed the school district’s superintendent in 1967. He held that post until 1977. After serving as the district’s superintendent, he became its business manager in 1977, a post he held through 1982.
He wrote the prospectus for the area vocational school’s approval by the state.
He was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church, Wabash; the Hanna Lodge No. 61 F. & A. M., Wabash, the Wabash York Rite, and the Fort Wayne Mizpah Shrine.He was a member of the Wabash Exchange Club from 1960 to 1975, where he was a past president and district governor. He was a former member of the Indiana Association of Retired Public School Superintendents and the Indiana Association of Retired School Business Officials.
He lived for 13 years in Port Charlotte, Fla.
Mr. Wade was born Aug. 13, 1921, in Andrews to Oliver Wade and Nina E. Price Wade. He married Cathlyn I. Wendel Feb. 14, 1943, in Rushville. His wife survives.
Also surviving are a son, Jan Alan Wade, Tulsa, Okla.; a daughter, Jane Ann Spencer, Bellevue, Wash.; three grandchildren; a brother, Oliver Wade Jr., Lakeville; and two sisters, A. Jean Ulrey, Evansville, and Patricia J. Eckert, Andrews. One sister and three brothers preceded him in death.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Grandstaff-Hentgen Manchester Avenue Chapel, 1177 Manchester Ave., Wabash, with Rev. Mike Wilson officiating. Burial will be at the Gardens of Memory Cemetery, Huntington County. Calling will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. A Masonic service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Preferred memorials are to the Timbercrest Sherman Fund.
Vaughn L. Whitesell
Vaughn L. Whitesell, 73, 934 Iowa St., died at 2:45 p.m. Saturday (March 4, 2000) at his home.
Mr. Whitesell was a night foreman at the Kmart Distribution Center, Fort Wayne, for 37 years. He was a veteran of the Navy.
He was born Sept. 27, 1926, in Huntington County to Asa Whitesell and Mabel Hunt Whitesell. He married Iris Berry Oct. 22, 1948, in Huntington. His wife survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Barbara E. Whitesell and Mary Jane Whitesell, both of Huntington; three brothers, Willard D. Whitesell, Walter L. Whitesell and Paul D. Whitesell, all of Huntington; three sisters, Martha L. Thorn, Joanna L. Miller and Bertha E. Wilson, all of Huntington; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Waneta Covey; a sister, Ruth B. French; two brothers, Albert L. Whitesell and Franklin R. Whitesell; one grandchild and one great-grandchild.
Calling will be held from noon until the 2 p.m. funeral service Tuesday at the Deal-Robbins & Van Gilder Funeral Home, Huntington Chapel, 338 E. Washington St. Rev. Elzie Spencer will officiate.
Burial will be at the Gardens of Memory Cemetery.
Preferred memorials are to Home Health and Hospice.
Robert Brahs
Robert Brahs, 86, a resident of the Courtland Health Care Center, Fort Wayne, died Wednesday (March 1, 2000) at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne.
Mr. Brahs was a pharmacist.
He was born March 12, 1913, to Fred J. Brahs and Elizabeth Recklau Brahs.
Survivors include two sisters, Ruth Martin, Fort Wayne, and Mrs. Robert (Barbara) Fordyce, Florida.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Fred A. Brahs; and two sisters, Mildred Heaston and Helen Thorn.
There will be no calling.
Graveside services will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at Pilgrims Rest Cemetery
with Rev. Allen Goebbert officiating.
The Hart Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Robert C. Hofmann
Robert C. Hofmann, 77, 1117 William St., died at 9:53 p.m. Wednesday (March 1, 2000) at Markle Health Care, Markle.
Mr. Hofmann was a firefighter with the Huntington Fire Department for 19 years, serving as assistant fire chief for the last six years. He retired April 1, 1974. He was a member of the Evangelical United Methodist Church for over 50 years and was custodian for the church for 10 years.
He was born Nov. 3, 1922, in Huntington to Christian H. Hofmann and Marian Plasterer Hofmann. He married Mildred E. Richardson Nov. 15, 1941, in Huntington. His wife survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Kevin Hofmann, Huntington, and Ronald Hofmann, Hacienda Heights, Calif.; three grandchildren; a brother, Henry Hofmann, Phoenix; and a sister, June Wendt, Holland, Mich.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, James R. Hofmann and G. Paul Hofmann, and a sister, Pat Weeks.
Calling is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the Deal-Robbins & Van Gilder Funeral Home, Huntington Chapel, 338 E. Washington St.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, with calling one hour prior to services, at the Evangelical United Methodist Church, 1000 Flaxmill Road. Rev. Bill Rapp will officiate.
Burial will be at the Gardens of Memory Cemetery.
Preferred memorials are to the Parkinson Foundation.
Maxine L. VanOsdol
Maxine L. VanOsdol, 79, Rushville, died Thursday (March 2, 2000) at Rush Memorial Hospital, Rushville.
Mrs. VanOsdol was a homemaker and had been a member of the Arlington Christian Church for more than 60 years. She was also a member of Home Helpers Home Ec Club, Delta Theta Tau Sorority and Amicitia. She had lived in the Arlington area most of her life, graduating from Arlington High School in 1938. She had also attended Central Business College. She moved to Rushville in 1995.
She was born Oct. 27, 1920, in Posey Township, Rush County, to Chester Lee and Grace Shaffer Lee. She married Robert VanOsdol April 28, 1940. Her husband died May 12, 1994.
Survivors include two sons, David VanOsdol, Arlington, and Robert VanOsdol, Huntington; a daughter, Betty Jane Mann, Greenfield; a brother, Fred Lee, Arlington; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Calling is 4-8 p.m. Friday at the Moster & Cox Mortuary, 334 N. Main St., Rushville, where funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. Matt Showalter will officiate at the services.
Burial will be at the Arlington East Hill Cemetery, Arlington.
Charles R. ‘Chuck’ Clark
Charles R. “Chuck” Clark, 41, Marion, died at 7:20 p.m. Tuesday (Feb. 29, 2000) at Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis.
Mr. Clark was a farmer and a member of the Etna Acres Golf Course.
He was born Dec. 18, 1958, in Huntington County to Garry and Beverly Clark. His parents survive and live in Converse. He married Pamela D. Pratt on Jan. 12, 1991. She survives.
Also surviving are a son, Troy L. Rucker, Fort Wayne; a daughter, Michelle E. Collins, Wabash; a sister, Carole Gill, Converse; and two grandsons.
A brother, Bruce Clark, preceded him in death.
Calling is from 2-8 p.m. Friday at the McDonald Funeral Home, 104 S. Main St., LaFontaine, where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday. Rev. Jim Black will officiate.
Burial will be at LaFontaine IOOF Cemetery.
Preferred memorials are to the Wabash County Hospital Oncology Department or the Wabash County Hospital Hope Foundation.
Charles M. Cross
Charles Milburn Cross, 85, Wabash, died at 11:55 p.m. Wednesday (March 1, 2000) at the Community Care Center, Wabash.
Mr. Cross was a farmer and had also driven a school bus for 30 years. He was a member of the Treaty Church of Christ, Treaty; sang solos in area churches for 70 years; and was a 4-H leader for 30 years. He served in the Howitzer Company, 151st Infantry of the National Guard.
He was born May 21, 1914, in Huntington County to Milburn and Mabel Reeder Glass Cross. He married Alice Marie Barnes on March 4, 1939. She survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Joe Cross, Spartanburg, S.C., and Jack Cross, Delphi; three daughters, Peggy Sue Downey, West Lafayette, Carla Cross, Wabash, and Mrs. Larry (Angie) Reed, LaFontaine; three sisters, Harriet Zachwieja, Arcadia, Fla., Mrs. Melvin (Mary Ruth) Arnold, Fort Wayne, and Mrs. Art (Louise) Warner, Billings, Mont.; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Calling is from 4-8 p.m. Friday at the McDonald Funeral Home, Eddingfield Chapel, 231 Falls Ave., Wabash.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, with calling one hour prior to services, at the Treaty Church of Christ, Treaty. Pastor Scott Saltsman will officiate.
Burial will be at LaFontaine IOOF Cemetery.
