Michael Shaffer
LIGONIER - Michael Shaffer, 47, died at 5:18 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001, at Parkview Noble Hospital, Kendallville, of an apparent heart attack.
He had lived in rural Ligonier for 14 years, having moved there from Nappanee. He was a truck driver working for Day Tripper, LaGrange.
He was born May 27, 1953, in Goshen to Marion Eugene Shaffer, who preceded him in death, and Suzanne Selvey, who survives in North Carolina. On May 6, 1978, in Cromwell, he married Belinda LaFrance, who survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Matthew and Daniel Shaffer, at home.
Calling is 10 a.m.-noon Saturday at Rieth-Rohrer-Ehret-Lienhart Funeral Home, Wakarusa. No services are planned.
James Bavender
CENTERVILLE, Ind. - James F. Bavender, 54, died Thursday, May 24, 2001, at Reid Hospital.
He was an industrial engineer, retiring from Dana Corp. after 30 years of service. He lived most of his life in the Centerville area. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, a member of the Dana 25-Year Club, and an avid fisherman.
Mr. Bavender was born June 25, 1946, in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., to Frederick L. and Mondaline (Meyers) Bavender. They preceded him in death.
He married Linda F. Everett on April 16, 1966, and she survives.
Also surviving are one sister, Deborah Blevins of Auburn; two brothers, F. Lee Bavender of Hagerstown, Ind., and Danny Bavender of Lodi, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in Mills Funeral Home, 405 E. Main St., Centerville, with calling after 10 a.m. The Rev. David Mosley will officiate. Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery.
Calling is today from 5-8 p.m. in the funeral home.

Mary Morgan
LOUISVILLE, KY. - Mary Jane (Kaufman) Morgan, 81, died Saturday, May 19, 2001, in Louisville, Ky.
Born in Kendallville on April 27, 1920, she was the daughter of Frank and Veda Kaufman. Her father, who preceded her in death, was a longtime pharmacist and owner of the former Central Drug Store, 124 S. Main St., Kendallville.
In 1942 she married William F. Morgan, who survives. He is a published author of short stories.
She was a 1938 Kendallville High School graduate and attended Columbia College of Radio and Drama in Chicago. She was program director for WCAR in Pontiac, Mich.
Mrs. Morgan and her husband worked for many years in radio in Detroit and San Antonio, Texas. In 1977 they moved to Red Springs, N.C. and purchased a radio station. They retired in 1987.
Surviving, in addition to her husband, are: a daughter Mrs. Nick (Pamela) Alexander, Bradenton, Fla.; a son, James Morgan, Colorado Springs, Colo.; two grandchildren, Lilith Jane Morgan and Delphine Morgan, both of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and a brother, Phil Kaufman, London, England.
Memorial services were held in Louisville on May 22, 2001. Graveside services and burial was on June 9, 2001, at Lake View Cemetery
in Kendallville.
Dale Ward
BUTLER - Dale F. Ward, 83, died Friday morning, Feb. 4, 2000, at The Laurels of DeKalb nursing home.
Mr. Ward was a farmer and was retired as a quality control foreman for Universal Tool & Stamping of Butler. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of the Concord Masonic Lodge and Fort Wayne Scottish Rite.
He was born Sept. 18, 1916, in Piper City, Ill., to Albert and Jesse Ward.
He married Leota Hart on April 21, 1945, in Fort Wayne. She survives in Butler.
Also surviving are two sons, A.B. of Butler and James E. of Montpelier, Ind.; two daughters, Rosemary Luker and Karen (Burnett) McKnight, both of Butler; two sisters, Audra Holtzworth of Harlan and Esther Applegate of Hicksville, Ohio; 19 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert, and two sisters, Anna Myers and Donna Wilmot.
Services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. in Carnahan-Baidinger & Walter Funeral Home, Spencerville. Pastor Todd Steere will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.
Calling is Sunday from 2-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Virginia Smith
FORT WAYNE - M. Virginia Smith, 84, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000, at Provena Sacred Heart Home in Avilla.
Mrs. Smith was born Nov. 3, 1915, in Fort Wayne to Albert and Mary (Erbine) White. On Feb. 22, 1941, she married Charles Smith, who preceded her in death in 1974.
She co-owned and operated the Baker Boy Bake Shop, retiring in 1974 after 40 years.
Surviving are two daughters, Patricia Alspaugh and Carole Beiswanger, both of Fort Wayne; two sons, Donald J. Smith of Fort Wayne and Timothy C. Smith of Garrett; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Prayer services will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at D.O. McComb & Sons Lakeside Park Funeral Home, 1140 Lake Ave., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Most Precious Blood Catholic Church, 1515 Barthold St. Burial will be in Catholic Cemetery.
Calling is from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with a vigil service there at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Robert Pemberton
ALBION - Robert F. Pemberton, 74, died Wednesday, March 1, 2000, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.
He was born on Sept. 1, 1925, in Payne, Ohio, to Theodore and Gladys (Treese) Pemberton. He married Dorothy I. Gilbert, who survives.
He retired in 1987 after being a carpenter for 50 years. He was a World War II Seabees veteran and was a member of the American Legion in Avilla and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Kendallville. Also, he was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Albion and the Carpenter Local 232.
Also surviving are three daughters, Marsha Kreegar of Hillrose, Co., Gloria Nixon of Toledo, Ohio, and Diana Scheele of Columbia City; two brothers, Richard Pemberton of Fort Wayne and James Pemberton of New Haven; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at D.O. McComb & Sons Pine Valley Park Funeral Home, 1320 E. Dupont Road, with calling there from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday.
Burial will be in I.O.O.F. Cemetery, New Haven.

Roxie Sheley
LAGRANGE - Roxie Modell Sheley, 89, died Thursday, June 8, 2000, at 8 a.m. in Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne.
She was born to Clarence Chester Young and Ica Dora (Holzworth) on July 25, 1910, in Noble County. She lived in LaGrange County most of her life after her marriage to Alfred Sheley Sr., on Aug. 29, 1930. He preceded her in death.
Mrs. Sheley worked at McCray Refrigeration Co. in Kendallville and Transagram Toys in Angola, and had been a Stanley Home Products representative. She was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Kendallville.
She is survived by two sons, Patrick M. Sheley, Arizona, and Junior Sheley, Stroh; three daughters, Nancy Lambright, Ligonier, Linda Heltzel, LaGrange, and Joyce Allen, Angola; one brother, Warren Lung, Pearl, Miss.; two sisters, Carolyn Chiddister, Leesburg, and Francis Baird, Statesboro, Ga.; 18 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Johnson, and a grandson.
Services will be Monday at 7 p.m. in Ulrey-Renner Funeral Home in Ligonier, with Kevin Stayner officiating. Cremation will follow the funeral service.
Calling will be in the funeral home from 2-7 p.m. prior to the funeral service.
Memorials may be given to Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses.
Robert Spencer
BRANSON, Mo. - Robert M. Spencer, 73, formerly of Auburn, died June 6, 2000, in Branson, Mo.
Mr. Spencer was a florist in Garrett and Auburn until his retirement in 1988. While in retirement, he worked for many years as a florist in Branson. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of the First Church of Christ, Garrett.
He was born Feb. 19, 1927, in Garrett to Jasper and Beatrice (Strawser) Spencer.
He is survived by his wife, Lorna; a daughter, Amanda Kirk of Tulsa, Okla.; a stepdaughter, Nancy Stolz of Elkhart; a stepson, David L. Keller of Chicago; three sisters, Eleanor Smith and June Weller, both of Garrett, and Betty Harris of Mount Prospect, Ill.
Memorial services will be held Thursday at 4 p.m. in Rice Cemetery, Elkhart.
