Kiratso Arvanitis
Nov. 20, 1934 - Dec. 31, 1998
Kiratso Arvanitis, 64, of New Buffalo, Mich., died on Thursday, Dec. 31, at St. Anthony Memorial Health Center, Michigan City, Ind.
She was born on Nov. 20, 1934, in Zagoras, Greece, the daughter of Angelo and Ellen Zgouras.
Mrs. Arvanitis and her husband owned and operated the Greek Island Restaurant, Bridgman, Mich.
She is survived by her husband, Angelo of New Buffalo; her son, Panayotis "Pete" (Beth) Arvanitis; a granddaughter, Nicole; and by her two brothers, Dimitri and Miltiades, both of Greece.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday in the Agia Paraskevi Greek Orthodox Church, New Buffalo. Burial will be in Pine Grove cemetery, New Buffalo.
Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday in the Kerley & Starks - Smith Funeral Home, New Buffalo.
Memorials contributions may be made to the church or to the Leukemia Society.
Ben P. Crowell
Oct. 20, 1914 - Dec. 30, 1998
Ben P. Crowell, 84, a resident of North Webster, Ind., formerly of South Bend, Ind., died at 8:40 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 30, in the Lakeland Rehabilitation and Health Care Center, Milford, Ind., where he had been a patient for one week.
He was born on Oct. 20, 1914, in Raber, Whitley County, Ind., a son of Oscar and Ruth Nye Crowell. His formative years were spent in Columbia City, Ind., where he graduated from high school in 1931.
During World War II, he served in the United States Army Air Force. Following his discharge, he made his home in Orlando, Fla., and on Jan. 21, 1947, he married
Dorothy L. O'Hearn. In 1949, they moved to South Bend where he was employed in the office of Bendix Corporation. Following his retirement in 1974, they moved to North Webster. Mrs. Crowell died on Sept. 15, 1995.
Mr. Crowell was a member of the Masonic Lodge of South Bend.
He is survived by a daughter, Barbara J. Ramenda of South Bend; two grandsons, Chad Ramenda of North Webster and Cody Ramenda of South Bend; a step - granddaughter, Carrie Ramenda of Bremen, Ind.; a great - grandson, Tyler Ramenda of Bremen; and by a sister - in - law, Helen Crowell of Columbia City.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was also preceded in death by two brothers, Walter "Bud" and Donald Crowell; and by two sisters, Ruth Orton and Elouise Blackburn.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday in Smith and Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City, with Father Edward Erpelding of St. Martin DePorres Catholic Church, Syracuse, Ind., officiating. The burial will be in Greenhill cemetery, Columbia City.
The visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday and one hour before the service on Monday in the funeral home.

Bernice R. Korpal
July 27, 1905 - Jan. 1, 1999
Bernice R. Korpal, 93, formerly of Butternut Road, South Bend, Ind., died at 6:40 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 1, in St. Joseph's Care Center.
She was born on July 27, 1905, in Manistee, Mich., and lived in the South Bend area most of her life.
On Nov. 24, 1925, as Bernice Janiszewski, she married
Theodore Korpal, who preceded her in death on Aug. 8, 1990.
Mrs. Korpal is survived by three daughters, Geraldine (Alex) Udvardy and Evelyn (Clifford) Hannah, both of South Bend, and Lori (Jerry) Sobczak of Indianapolis, Ind.; six grandchildren; and by thirteen great - grandchildren.
Mrs. Korpal was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Valeria A. Zell Auxiliary #146, Polish Women's Alliance Group #65, and the Rosary Society of Holy Family Catholic Church.
Family and friends may call from 2 until 8 p.m. on Sunday in the St. Joseph Funeral Home, 824 S. Mayflower Road, where a Rosary will be said at 4:30 p.m.
Services will be at 11 a.m. on Monday in Holy Family Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart cemetery.

Victoria Macias
Jan. 20, 1929 - Dec. 31, 1998
Victoria Macias, 69, of Viking Drive, South Bend, Ind., died at 2:15 p.m. on Thurs - day, Dec. 31, in her residence.
She was born on Jan. 20, 1929, in Calvert, Texas, and lived in the South Bend area for 30 years, coming from Texas. Mrs. Macias retired in 1994 from the Dutron Corporation after 18 years of service.
On Oct. 18, 1948, in Lubbock, Texas, as Victoria Chavez, she married
Carmen Luis Macias, who survives.
She is also survived by two daughters, Marta (Claudio) Bueno and Mary Kay (LaMont) Kloski, both of South Bend; four sons, Adam Macias of Morgantown, W. Va., Richard (Barb) Macias and Enrique Macias, both of South Bend, and David (Tina) Macias of Phoenix, Ariz.; 14 grandchildren, Angelica Bueno, Clyde Bueno, Jr., David Bueno, Monica Bueno, Lucinda Bueno, Martina Bueno, Rachel Macias, Rita Macias, Andrew Macias, Adam Macias, Amanda Macias, Marissa Macias, Christin Kloski and Breana Kloski; a sister, Jane Lozoya of Hereford, Texas; and by a brother, Jose Chavez of Lubbock.
Mrs. Macias was a member of St. Stephen Catholic Church, Society of Guadalupe, the Charismatic Prayer Group, and the Prayer Group at Notre Dame.
Family and friends may call from 2 until 8 p.m. on Sunday in the St. Joseph Funeral Home, 824 S. Mayflower Road, where a Rosary will be said at 6 p.m.
Services will be at 10 a.m. on Monday in St. Stephen Catholic Church, with burial to follow in St. Joseph cemetery.

Donald F. Craig
Aug. 3, 1931 - March 28, 1999
Donald F. Craig, 67, of Pulling Street, South Bend, Ind., died after an illness at 9:12 a.m. on Sunday, March 28, in Hospice House.
Donald was born on Aug. 3, 1931, in Albion, Pa., to Carl and Edith (Walton) Craig, who both preceded him in death. He had lived in the South Bend area since 1974, coming from Pennsylvania.
Don retired in 1998 from Janco Products where he worked in maintenance. He had worked most of his life as a meat cutter and had worked at Gettner's Meat Packing in South Bend. Donald served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1167 in South Bend.
On Aug. 28, 1969, in Erie, Pa., he married
Joyce Loder, who survives.
He is also survived by three daughters, Linda (John) Portonova of Erie, Kelly (Jerry) Grahl and Kym Gundrum, both of South Bend; a son, Todd Brocious, and his fiance, Michelle of South Bend; three sisters, Helen Craig of Erie, Mildred Davis of Albion, Pa., and Myrtle (Charles) Sandford of Bridger, Mont.; two brothers, Richard (Winifred) Craig of South Bend and Robert (Betty) Craig of New Castle, Pa.; and by five grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 31, in the Guisinger Colonial Chapel Funeral Home, 3718 S. Michigan Street, South Bend. A funeral service will be held immediately following visitation at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, with Sam Oliver of Hospice of St. Joseph County officiating. Burial will take place later in Southlawn cemetery.

Bruce L. Heyde
Aug. 17, 1958 - March 28, 1999
Bruce Leckrone Heyde, 40, of Greenwood, Ind., formerly of Warsaw, Ind., died at 2:15 a.m. on Sunday, March 28, at the Regency Place Nursing Home, Greenwood. He died of cancer following a 10 - month illness.
He was the manager of 84 Lumber Company in Greenwood. He had been employed by the company since 1982 and previously worked at stores in Richmond, Ky., and Radcliff, Ky. He was a former resident of Elizabethtown, Ky., living there from 1986 to 1996. He had lived in Greenwood since 1996.
He was a 1977 graduate of Warsaw High School, and a 1981 graduate of Indiana University where he had earned a Bachelor's degree in business. He was a member of the Camp Knox Masonic Lodge in Radcliff, Ky.
He was married
on Nov. 28, 1981, to Cristi L. Hansen of Kokomo, Ind. She survives.
He is also survived by a son, Brad A. Heyde of Lexington, Ky.; two daughters, Lauren A. Heyde and Ashley B. Heyde, both at home; his parents, Dr. Russell L. and Patricia (Leckrone) Heyde of Warsaw; a brother, Lee L. Heyde of Warsaw; and by three sisters, Rebecca A. Heyde Schaefer of Fort Wayne, Ind., Dr. Jane L. Heyde Coplen of Warsaw and Ann M. Heyde Harman of Claypool, Ind.
Viewing will be from 4 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 31, at the McHatton - Sadler Funeral Chapel, Warsaw, followed by a Masonic service at 7:30 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 1, in the McHatton - Sadler Funeral Chapel, Warsaw. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery, Warsaw.

M. Georgene Jackson
Jan. 11, 1913 - March 29, 1999
M. Georgene Jackson, 86, residing on Rue Marceau, Park Jefferson Apartments, South Bend, Ind., passed away at 3:17 a.m. on Monday, March 29, in Hospice House.
Georgene was born on Jan. 11, 1913, in Chicago, Ill., to the late George C. and Maude V. (Covey) Peters, and had lived here since 1981, coming from Chicago.
Georgene served as the registrar at Northwestern University School of Law in Chicago. She also served as secretary for Robert Sherman, president of Blue Cross. She later directed the group insurance program for the International Minerals and Chemical Corporation, was employed with the John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company, served with the Arab Republic consulate office, Radio Isotope Service, and the Veterans Administration Lakeside Hospital, all in Chicago. She proctored Illinois State Bar examinations, and wrote manuals for the American Hospital Association. She retired as secretary for the Bendix Corporation in South Bend and Washington, D.C.
Georgene is survived by her sister, Viola E. Mellen of Mishawaka, Ind.; a niece, Elizabeth A. Willson of Lakewood, Colo.; and by a nephew, William G. Mellen of Mishawaka.
Georgene has requested there be no visitation or services. Cremation will take place and entombment will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger, Ind.

Norma M. McLochlin
Sept. 25, 1920 - March 28, 1999
Norma Marie McLochlin, 78, of Fairington Circle, South Bend, Ind., died after an illness at 4 a.m. on Sunday morning, March 28, in Saint Joseph's Regional Medical Center.
Norma was born on Sept. 25, 1920, in Akron, Ohio, to Robert C. and Myrtle (Denny) McLochlin, who both preceded her in death.
She had been employed by the A. Polsky Company and Rubber City Printery, both in Akron. In 1962 she moved to the Michiana area. Norma retired as a secretary and bookkeeper, having retired from Coppes Kitchens in Nappanee, Ind.
Norma was a member of St. Matthew Cathedral, South Bend, and the Harvest House and Rosary Society of St. Matthew Cathedral. She was also a member of the Catholic Daughters of America Court 1171 in Akron, Ohio, and the Mark Hefferman Post of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, also in Akron.
A funeral Mass for Norma M. McLochlin will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 31, in St. Matthew Cathedral, South Bend, with the Rev. Dermot Gahan officiating. Burial will then follow in Mt. Hope cemetery, Logansport, Ind.
Visitation for Norma will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today, March 30, in the Guisinger Colonial Chapel Funeral Home, 3718 S. Michigan Street, South Bend, where a Rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m.
Mary L. Meadows
March 9, 1932 - March 27, 1999
GROVERTOWN - Mary Louise Meadows, 67, of 5520 N. State Road 23, Grovertown, Ind., passed away after a sudden illness at 8:45 a.m. on Saturday, March 27, in LaPorte Hospital, LaPorte, Ind.
Mrs. Meadows was born on March 9, 1932, in Bremen, Ind., to Harold and Velva (Stiles) Klopfenstein, and lived in the area most of her life. She was preceded in death by her parents; and by a brother, Edward "Buss" Klopfenstein.
On Nov. 28, 1959, in Hamlet, Ind., she was married
to Lester Meadows, Jr., who survives.
She is survived by a daughter, Vickie Emigh of Indianapolis, Ind.; two sons, William of Terre Haute, Ind., and Steven of LaPorte; and by two grandchildren, Jonathan Baird and Courtney Meadows.
Mary was a housewife, attended the Grovertown United Methodist Church, was past president of the Oregon - Davis PTO, and served as a den mother for the Grovertown Cub Scouts.
Services will be at 1 p.m. (EST) on Wednesday at the the Rannells Funeral Home, Hamlet Chapel, with Pastor Robert Gallows officiating. Burial will be in the Grovertown cemetery.
Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. (EST) today, and from 9 a.m. on Wednesday until the time of services at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the National Lung Association.
Edward B. Nowak
Nov. 24, 1920 - March 25, 1999
Edward B. Nowak, 78, died at 5:20 p.m. on Thursday, March 25, in Cypress Grove, Newburg, Ind. He suffered a stroke.
He was a supervisor of street maintenance for the City of South Bend, Ind., retiring in 1983.
He was a member of DAV White Eagle #39 Indiana Chapter, a life member of American Legion Post Greshim #7, a life member of VFW Post 1114, a veteran of US Army Normandy Invasion, received two Purple Hearts, was consulted by the Department of Army for the movie Saving Private Ryan, and was a Kentucky colonel and Sagamore of Wabash.
He is survived by a son, Bruce A. Nowak of New Buffalo, Mich.; two grandsons, Thomas Nowak and Michael Nowak; a granddaughter, Courtney Nowak; a brother, Bernard Nowak of Cedar Lake, Ind.; and by a friend who cared for him, Frances Wasson of Evansville, Ind.
Visitation was from 2 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, March 28, in the Ziemer Funeral Home East Chapel, Evansville, with a Rosary service conducted at 6:30 p.m.
Services were at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, March 29, in the Ziemer Funeral Home East Chapel, and continued at 10 a.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Fr. Brian Holtz officiated. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Park cemetery. Retired veterans conducted military rites at the cemetery.
