Varnold Sherwood

Sept. 11, 1932 - Dec. 21, 1998

Varnold "Barney" Sherwood, 66, of 11975 Pucker Street, Niles, Mich., died after a brief Illness at 10:40 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 21, at Lakeland Medical Center, Niles.

He was born on September 11, 1932 in Dowagiac, Mich. to Ruth L. (Arter) and Lester E. Sherwood and was a lifetime area resident.

Mr. Sherwood, a U.S. Army Veteran serving in the Korean Conflict, was a self - employed custom livestock hauler and farmed many acres of hay. He also raised and bred Belgium Draft Horses and was a member of the Cass County Draft Horse and Mule Club in Cassopolis.

On Oct. 9, 1970 in Berrien Springs, Mich., he married the former Helen Beissel, who survives.

He is also survived by his children, Genny (David) Ingeson of Saint Joseph, Mich.; Buzz Sherwood of Berrien Springs, James W. (Elaine) Harner of Baroda, Mich.; and Tamara Metz of Raleigh, N.C.; six grandchildren; a sister, Helen Blighton of Eau Claire, Mich.; and by four brothers, Howard, Eugene, Dale and Donald Sherwood all of Niles.

Funeral Services for Varnold Sherwood will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday in Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles with the Reverend Fred T. Smith of South Niles Community Church officiating. Interment will be at Rose Hill cemetery in Berrien Springs.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

Contributions in memory of Mr. Sherwood may be made to the Cass County Draft Horse and Mule Club.

Hazel Adams

Sept. 15, 1917 - Dec. 5, 1998

KNOX - Hazel Adams, 81, of 300 E. Culver Road, died of natural causes Saturday in the Countryside Place Nursing Home. Survivors include a daughter, Linda Earnest of Knox; and five sons, Eugene Napier of Monticello, Ind., Clarence Napier of Wilmington, Ill., Clyde Napier of LaPorte, Paul Adams of North Judson and David Adams of Fort Wayne. Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the First Baptist Church. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the M.C. Smith Funeral Home.

Jaunita W. Arndt

June 15, 1927 - Dec. 4, 1998

MICHIGAN CITY - Jaunita W. Arndt, 71, of 1015 Elm Street, died Friday in the St. Anthony Medical Center. Survivors include her husband Jack; two daughters, Christi Bechtol and Cathy Drzewiecki, both of South Bend; and a sister, Mary E. Peckat of Tucson, Ariz. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in the Carlisle Funeral Home.

Marzetta R. Burke

Feb. 2, 1925 - Dec. 5, 1998

SOUTH BEND - Marzetta R. Burke, 73, of Cleveland Road, died Saturday in Saint Joseph's Medical Center of natural causes. Survivors include three daughters, Patricia Dempsey of Mishawaka, and Bernadette Taylor and Marie Chynoweth, both of Indianapolis; a son, Kenneth Jr. of Orlando, Fla.; her mother, Sadie (Harris) Smith of South Bend; two sisters, Dorothy White of South Bend and Phyllis Walker of LaVerne, Calif.; and a brother, Edward Smith Jr. of South Bend. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the McGann Funeral Home, 2313 E. Edison Road, where friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Everett B. Calvert

Nov. 13, 1916 - Dec. 6, 1998

SOUTH BEND - Everett B. Calvert, 82, of North Elmer Street, died of natural causes Sunday in the Healthwin Extended Care Facility. Survivors include his wife, Maxine L. (Alshouse); a daughter, Beverly J. Lind of Three Rivers; a son, James A. Voorde of Cassopolis; two sisters, Pauline Leach of South Bend and Marie Owens of Seattle; and three brothers, James Hummer of Granger and Jack Hummer and Bill Hummer, both of Osceola. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the McGann Funeral Home, where friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Evelyn L. Chandler

April 3, 1906 - Dec. 4, 1998

CULVER - Evelyn L. Chandler, 92, of 820 Lakeshore Drive, died Friday in Miller's Merry Manor. Survivors include a son, David L. Burke of Culver. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Bonine Funeral Home, where friends may call an hour before services.

Mary A. Cooper

Oct. 31, 1917 - Dec. 5, 1998

ELKHART - Mary A. Cooper, 81, of 54817 Bradley St., died of natural causes at 11:55 p.m. Saturday in the Elkhart General Hospital. Survivors include a daughter, Charie Devolites of Burnsville, Minn.; and a son, Paul J. of Elkhart. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Billings Funeral Home, where friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today.

Effie Crist

Feb. 1, 1900 - Dec. 2, 1998

SOUTH BEND - Effie (MacNaughton) Crist, 98, of Zephyrhills, Fla., formerly of South Bend, died of natural causes Wednesday in Clemson Manor A.C.L.F., Zephyrhills. Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Riverview Mausoleum Chapel. There will be no visitation. The Welsheimer Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Martha De Raeve

Aug. 11, 1901 - Dec. 5, 1998

MISHAWAKA - Martha (Rutkowski) De Raeve, 97, of South Spring Street, died of natural causes Saturday in the Comstock Nursing Home, Milwaukee. Survivors include two daughters, Eldean "Blondie" Demuelenaere of Milwaukee and Margaret Bock of Naples, Fla.; and two sons, Robert H. Rutkowski of Osceola and Irvin E. of Mishawaka. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Joseph Catholic Church. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Hahn Funeral Home, where the Rosary will be said at 4:30 p.m.

Ernest R. Ebeling

July 14, 1914 - Dec. 5, 1998

LAPORTE - Ernest R. Ebeling, 84, of 3426 W. Small Road, died at 6:57 p.m. Saturday in LaPorte Hospital after an illness. Survivors include his wife, Alma (Szawara); two daughters, Gail King of Knox and Janis Martinsen of LaPorte; a son, Ronald of LaPorte; a stepdaughter, Marilyn Lofberg of Fort Myers, Fla.; four stepsons, Ralph Cotter and James Szawara, both of LaPorte, Richard Szawara of Phoenix and Albert Szawara Jr. of Winston Salem, N.C.; and two sisters, Arnieta Struss and Lorna Connelly, both of LaPorte. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. John Lutheran Church. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the Essling Funeral Home, and an hour before services at the church.

Oscar J. Frame

Sept. 13, 1934 - Dec. 6, 1998

ELKHART - Oscar J. Frame, 64, of 618 W. Wolf Ave., died Sunday in Elkhart General Hospital of injuries suffered in an accident, involving a fall from a vehicle, on Nov. 23. Survivors include his mother, Georgia Frame of Elkhart; three sisters, Virginia DeVore and Rosemary Jernigan, both of Elkhart, and Lillian Bogart of South Bend; and two brothers, David W. and James F., both of Elkhart. Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Walley - Mills - Zimmerman Funeral Home, where friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Donavee C. Hatfield

Feb. 2, 1923 - Dec. 6, 1998

BUCHANAN - Donavee C. Hatfield, 75, of 904 Commercial St., died of natural causes Sunday in her home. Survivors include a daughter, Martha Curtis of Buchanan; and a sister, Elizabeth Poelman of Mishawaka. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Swem Funeral Home, where friends may call an hour before services.

Clarence A. Hayes

Feb. 14, 1913 - Dec. 5, 1998

ELKHART - Clarence A. Hayes, 85, of 420 N. Third St., died of natural causes Saturday in Rosewood Terrace. Survivors include his wife Reba; three daughters, Vida Price, Mildred Ward and Linda Hayes, all of Elkhart; two sons, Lloyd and Leland, both of Elkhart; and two sisters, Nettie Wright and Velma Hayes, both of Detroit. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Hartzler - Gutermuth - Inman Funeral Home, where friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Karen S. Hileman

Dec. 4, 1948 - Dec. 5, 1998

MENTONE - Karen S. Hileman, 50, of 111 East High St., died of natural causes at 1:07 p.m. Saturday in the Methodist Hospital of Indiana, Indianapolis. Survivors include her husband, Charles R.; four sons, Robert of Fairmont, Ind., Jason of Muncie, Ind., and Kevin and Christopher, both at home; her mother, Betty (Cooley) Hardesty of Argos; a sister, Kathryn Hylton of Cleveland; and a brother, Keith Hardesty of California. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in the King Memorial Home, where friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today.

Thomas D. Lawson Sr.

July 6, 1959 - Dec. 5, 1998

SOUTH BEND - Thomas D. Lawson Sr., 39, of 2105 S. Michigan St., died of natural causes at 8:40 p.m. Saturday in the Wintersong Village Nursing Home, Knox. Survivors include two sons, Nathan E. and Thomas D. Jr., both of LaPorte; his mother and stepfather, Barbara and Willard Combs of Knox; five sisters, Shilla Cornelius and Connie Howard, both of Knox, Marian Wamsley of Winamac, and Donna Deruntz and Cathy Kapp, both of LaPorte; and three brothers, Michael Combs of Knox, and Mark Combs and Mitchel Combs, both Texas. Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Haverstock Funeral Home, where friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today.
