ROCHESTER - Charlotte Jeanne Jung, 74, formerly of Argos, who resided at 2605 Barrett Rd., Rochester, for the past 23 years, died Sunday, December 20, 1998, at 6:40 p.m. in Memorial Hospital, South Bend. Charlotte died, following complications from heart surgery in October.
Born in Tipton, Ind., on April 24, 1924, the daughter of John S. and Dorothy K. Howard Jung, she graduated as Valedictorian from Argos High School in 1942.
Charlotte had yearned to go to college, but it was not financially practical for her family to send her, so she chose the Ft. Wayne International Business College where she graduated with honors.
For most of her working years, Charlotte was W.O. Osborn's Executive Secretary at the State Exchange (NorCen/Pinnacle) Bank in Culver. She was 22 years old, working in Fort Wayne for a stockbroker, when she learned that "W. O." was looking for an executive secretary. She applied and got the job. Osborn wired her with an offer to come to work at the bank. Charlotte kept that telegram the rest of her life.
She began as executive secretary: typing, taking shorthand and learning banking from W.O.
Charlotte Jung was truly an exemplary pioneer in the business world, proving that, given a chance, there was nothing that women could not do, excelling in every field.
Over the years, Charlotte acquired additional responsibilities with the bank. Eventually, she became a vice - president and then senior vice - president. She was elected to the Board of Directors in 1965.
Charlotte retired from the bank in 1986, but not before she had learned about computers from Eldon Ploetz.
Her life was as colorful and interesting as one of her oil paintings. She was a woman of many interests.
She also was a world traveler, visiting places as far - flung as Europe, the Orient, South America and Panama.
She appreciated the outdoors. An enthusiastic fisherman, she enjoyed wetting her line in Lake Manitou. She loved nature and regularly fed the birds that faithfully came to her feeder. She had a green thumb and always had a lovely garden.
Active in many varied ways, Charlotte was a member of the Argos United Methodist Church, the American Legion Auxiliary, Argos, and was past - president of the Hi Neighbor Club. She was the first state president of the National Association of Bank Women, attending many of their conventions and hosting members in her home.
Charlotte's survivors include two brothers, their spouses and a sister - in - law. They are Keith and Mary Jung, Des Moines, Iowa, Kenneth and Cleone Jung, Grand Rapids, Michigan and Patricia Jung Cook, Plymouth. Five nieces and five nephews and their families also survive.
Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Thomas Jung and John Eric Jung, a nephew.
Friends are invited to visit with the family on Wednesday, December 23, 1998, from 2 to 8 p.m., in the Johnson - Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.
