M. Kenneth Scott

NILES - - M. Kenneth Scott, 48, of Omaha, Neb., formerly of Niles, died June 18 in his home. Survivors include two daughters, Kasci Scott and Tara Scott, both of Wakefield, Neb.; and a son, Colton of Wakefield. Memorial services were held July 2 in Reynolds - Love Chapel, Lexington, Neb.
Walter R. Baldridge
May 26, 1905 - Nov. 20, 1998
Walter Robert Baldridge, 93, a longtime resident of South Bend, Ind., died at 7:50 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 20, at Valley View Health Care in Elkhart, Ind.
Walter was born in Blue Ridge Mountains, Kentucky, on May 26, 1905, to Albert and Elizabeth Baldridge, who preceded him in death. He lived in South Bend for over seventy years. He worked as a general laborer for Studebaker's for 44 years until he retired.
On Oct. 26, 1924, he married
Berneice Zerbe, who preceded him in death on May 14, 1994.
She is survived by a daughter, JoAnn Deller of Boulder, Colo.; and by a son, Donald W. (Nancy) Baldridge of Elkhart. He is also survived by four grandchildren and four great - grandchildren.
He was a member of the River Park United Methodist Church and Portage Lodge 675 F. & A.M.
Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 22, at the Guisinger Colonial Chapel Funeral Home, 3718 S. Michigan Street, South Bend.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 23, at the funeral home, with Pastor Phil Abram officiating. Burial will be immediately following at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger, Ind.

Sherman L. Clark
March 1, 1926 - Nov. 18, 1998
Sherman L. Clark, 72, a longtime resident of South Bend, Ind., and a veteran of World War II who fought in the Philippines and later in the occupation of Japan, died at 5:29 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 18, at South Bend Memorial Hospital.
Sherman was born in Mt. Sterling, Ky., on March 1, 1926, to William and Lydia Clark.
He was an honorary member of the Kentucky Colonels and a long - time seaman for the United States Steel Company, serving as a ship's wheelsman. Sherman's late brother, Morgan Clark, was a captain for U. S. Steel at the time of his death, and was reported to have had the last radio contact with the Edmund Fitzgerald which sank during a storm on Lake Superior on Nov. 10, 1975.
He is survived by sisters, Lydia Filippelli of South Bend and Helen Robinson of North Liberty, Ind.; brothers, David Clark of Valdosta, Ga., and Carl Clark of Colleyville, Texas; a nephew, Robert J. Pate of Osceola, Ind.; as well as 10 other nieces and nephews, and by numerous grandnieces and grandnephews.
Funeral services for Sherman L. Clark will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at the Guisinger Colonial Chapel Funeral Home, South Bend, with the Rev. James Snell officiating. Interment will be in Highland cemetery, South Bend.
There was visitation from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 20, in the Guisinger Colonial Chapel Funeral Home, 3718 S. Michigan Street, South Bend.
Elsie Minnie Frederick
Oct. 25, 1910 - Oct. 10, 1998
Elsie ("Nan") will be missed. She died after a long illness. She lived the majority of her life in Mishawaka, Ind., at 12201 E. Jefferson.
She married
Leo N. Frederick on July 6, 1933. Leo preceded her in death in May 1991, along with one great - grandchild, Nicholas Jur - gonski.
She was the beloved mother of Shirley (Dan) Jurgonski of South Bend, Ind., and Thomas Lee (Jewel) Frederick of Granger, Ind. The beloved grandmother of Laura (Scott) Allison of Elkhart, Ind., John (Marilyn) Jurgonski of South Bend, Lisa (Bob) Ruth of South Bend, Le - An (Tony) Lopez of Mishawaka, Tara (Craig) Hill of Mishawaka. She is also survived by 15 great - grandchildren and one great - great - grandchild. She has three surviving brothers, Mitchell Long, John Long and H.R. Long, and one surviving sister, Dot Crosswhite, all of Mountain City, Tenn.
Elsie retired from Uniroyal after many years of service. She spent the majority of her life in Mishawaka after coming from Mountain City, Tenn. She volunteered her services at Penn High School and the Willow Creek United Methodist Church in Mishawaka. Elsie was also active in Eastern Star. A mother to all she was!
Elsie will be missed and thought of often by her family. Rest in peace Nan.
Services were held at 8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 12, 1998, in the Bubb Funeral Chapel North, Mishawaka, where friends called from 6 p.m. until the time of services.
Alice M. Grimes
Dec. 3, 1912 - Nov. 19, 1998
SOUTH BEND - Alice M. Grimes, 85, residing on S. 34th Street, South Bend, Ind., passed away of natural causes at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 19, at the Ironwood Health and Rehabilitation Center, South Bend.
Mrs. Grimes worked for the Penny Saver in South Bend for fourteen years in the circulation department.
She was born on Dec. 3, 1912, in Lakeville, Ind., to the late Charles and Oldean (Barkley) Fuchs. Mrs. Grimes had lived in our local area all of her life.
On Jan. 10, 1932, in South Bend, she married
Walter L. Grimes, who preceded her in death on April 9, 1995. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Julia Wozny; and by five brothers, Donald Fuchs, George Fuchs, James Fuchs, Charles "Fritz" Fuchs and Spooner "Dep" Fuchs.
She is survived by four brothers, Jack Fuchs of South Bend, Ross Fuchs and John Fuchs, both of Bremen, Ind., and Bobbie Fuchs of Lakeville, Ind.; as well as by many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 23, at the Palmer Funeral Home, 2528 Mishawaka Avenue, South Bend. Rev. Don Francis will officiate. Burial and graveside services will follow in Southlawn cemetery, South Bend.
Friends may call from 3 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 22, at the Palmer Funeral Home, South Bend.

Billy John Hill
July 21, 1940 - Nov. 19, 1998
PLYMOUTH - Billy John Hill, 58, of 16763 West 11th Road, Plymouth, died from a cancer - related illness at 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, November 19, 1998, in Memorial Hospital, South Bend.
Born in Knox, Ind., on July 21, 1940, Bill was a lifetime area resident. He was the son of Marion H. and Dorothy Smith Hill. He lived in the Plymouth and Knox area from 1940 to 1959. He was a 1958 graduate of Plymouth's Lincoln High School.
In Chicago in 1958, Bill joined the Air Force. In 1962 he was discharged as an A/2c at Lockbourne Air Force Base, Ohio.
On November 12, 1960, in Newark, Ohio, Bill and Marjorie Meeker were married
. They lived in Columbus, Ohio, for twelve years, until 1971.
Bill was a truck driver; he worked for CSI, Inc., South Bend, for nine years. Most recently he was an over - the - road truck driver for Smith Transportation, Roaring Springs, Penn. He became acquainted with people all over the world through his ham and CB radios. With his transmission silenced, his unseen friends will miss his cheerful messages across the country.
Bill thoroughly enjoyed life. He was happily married
for thirty - eight years and loved his children, son - in - law and granddaughters very much. He spent many happy days attending the horse shows in which his family participated.
In addition to his wife, Bill is survived by his daughter Cindy and son - in - law, Jim Sherwood, and his two granddaughters, Cassie and Tabitha Sherwood, all of Culver; and by his son, Roger Hill of Plymouth. In addition, a sister, Betty O'Connor and her husband, Howard of Bremen, and a brother, Robert Hill of Plymouth, survive.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, and by Gary John Hill, an infant son.
Friends are invited to visit with the family on Sunday, November 22, 1998, from 3 to 7 p.m. in the Johnson - Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.
Funeral services conducted by the Rev. Wilson Shabaz will be in the funeral home on Monday, November 23, 1998, at 10:30 a.m. Burial in the New Oakhill cemetery will follow.
Memorial gifts in Bill's name may be made to the Boys & Girls Club of Plymouth.
Alfred John Ray

Mr. Alfred John Ray (Ratajczak), 82, of Inn - D - Inn Drive, Dowagiac, Mich., died on Thursday morning, Nov. 19, at his home.
He was born on Aug. 16, 1916, in South Bend, Ind.
On May 25, 1935, in St. Joseph, Mich., he was married
to Dorothy Helen Flugrath. He was preceded in death in August 1997 by his wife Dorothy and, several years ago, by his two sisters, Mrs. Fred (Dorothy) Paszek and Mrs. Vern (Esther) Moore.
He was the beloved father of, and is survived by, his one son, John (Dianna) Ray of Marion, Ind; one daughter, Mrs. David (Joyce) McKenzie of Harrison, Maine; six grandchildren, Carl (Melissa) McKenzie, Kathleen (James) McKenna, Paul (Holly) McKenzie, Stacy (Bryan) Meister, Jamie Ray and Michael John Ray; and by five great - grandchildren, Taylor Gates McKenzie, Kathryn and Sean McKenna, and Nicholas and Olivia Lynn Meister.
Mr. Ray was a longtime resident and community leader at Indian Lake where he and his wife operated the Inn - D - Inn from 1950 to 1974. He was a community leader, founder and member of the Indiana Lake Volunteer Fire Department, and was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Dowagiac.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 23, in St. John's Lutheran Church, 603 McClary Street, with Pastor Jeff Weber officiating. Burial will be in Mission Hills Memorial Gardens cemetery.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday at the McLauchlin - Clark Chapel.
Memorials may be made to the "Handicap Accessibility Fund" in care of St. John's Lutheran Church.

Josephine T. Smith

Josephine T. (Bierly) Smith, 86, of Rural Route 3, Walkerton, Ind., passed away on Thursday, Nov. 19, 1998.
She was born on May 27, 1912, in Walkerton, to Harriet (Stickley) and Warren Bierly, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by a sister and five brothers.
On March 21, 1937, in Walkerton, Josephine married
Sidney T. Smith, who survives. They lived in the Walkerton area their lifetime. Josephine was a homemaker and the mother of Rev. Thomas A. Smith of Muncie, Ind., who survives. She is also survived by four grandchildren; and by a sister, Doris Malstaff of Union Mills, Ind.
Josephine attended Tracy United Methodist Church, was a member of the Johnson Township Community Club and the Walkerton United Methodist Church.
Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 23, at the Nusbaum - Elkin Funeral Home in Walkerton.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 24, at the Nusbaum - Elkin Funeral Home, with burial following in Woodlawn cemetery, Walkerton.
Fr. Richard J. Smith
Aug. 23, 1924 - Nov. 20, 1998
Fr. Richard J. Smith, 74, of the Fort Wayne/South Bend Diocese, passed away after a lengthy illness at 2:10 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 20, in the Fountainview Retirement Village, Bu - chanan, Mich.
Father is the son of the late Foss and Helen (Mc - Greevy) Smith. He was born in Ft. Wayne, Ind., on Aug. 23, 1924.
Father Smith is survived by a sister, Sally Springer of Ft. Wayne; 15 nieces and nephews; and by several great - nieces and great - nephews.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary Richardine Meyers, Patricia Keefer and Rose Eileen Moran.
Fr. Smith was a graduate of the Sacred Heart Academy in Ft. Wayne and the St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore, Md. He was ordained on June 11, 1949, in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Ft. Wayne, by Bishop John F. Noll. His first assignment was on July 7, 1949, as associate pastor at St. Joseph Church, Mishawaka, serving Msgr. Curt Suelzer, pastor. His other assignments were on July 5, 1956, appointed chaplain of the South Bend Serra Club; June 17, 1959, appointed assistant at St. Thomas Church, Elkhart; Oct. 1, 1962, appointed Elkhart Deanery Director of the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine; June 15, 1964, appointed pastor of St. Joseph Church, Roanoke, (where he helped build the present church) and St. Catherine Mission Church, Nix Settlement, Ind. On June 13, 1964, he was appointed chaplain of the Ft. Wayne Serra Club; on Jan. 17, 1966, he was appointed to serve as pro - synodal judge in the diocesan tribunal; on July 1, 1971, he became administrator of St. Thomas Church, Elkhart; on Jan. 15, 1972, he was appointed diocesan consultor; he then became pastor of Sacred Heart Church, Lakeville, on July 6, 1978. He was appointed moderator of the South Bend DCCW; and on Sept. 19, 1989, he was appointed spiritual director of the Legion of Mary, South Bend Curia.
Father Smith celebrated 40 years as a priest on June 11, 1989.
Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 22, in the Sacred Heart Church, Lakeville. A vigil service will be held in the church at 4 p.m.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 23, in St. Jude Church, South Bend. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 24, in the Catholic cemetery, Ft. Wayne.

Anna M. Zakrzewski

SOUTH BEND - Anna M. Zakrzewski, 85, formerly of Locust Road, South Bend, Ind., passed away after an illness at 11:25 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 18, in Winchester Hospital, Winchester, Mass.
She was born on Jan. 14, 1913, in South Bend, to Joseph and Mary (Kumor) Lenczowski, and lived in the area most of her life until moving to Massachusetts two years ago. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Bernice Malinowski; and by two brothers, Joseph Lenczowski and Frank Lenczowski.
Mrs. Zakrzewski is survived by a daughter, Patricia J. (Daniel) Kiger of Wausau, Wis.; a son, Walter J. (Rosemarie) Zakrzewski of Burlington, Mass.; seven grandchildren, ten great - grandchildren and one great - great - grandson; four sisters, Alice Marcinkowski, Harriet Jones, Josephine Miller, all of South Bend, and Stella Miller of Orlando, Fla.; and by four brothers, Bernard Lenczowski and Steve Lenczowski, both of South Bend, John Lenczowski of Marion, Ind., and Stanley Lenczowski of Mishawaka, Ind.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Lakeville, Ind.
Family and friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. on Sunday in the St. Joseph Funeral Home, 1827 E. Ireland Road, where a Rosary will be recited at 5 p.m.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at St. Jude Catholic Church. Burial will follow at St. Joseph cemetery.
