Alvera M. Voorde

Dec. 2, 1907 - Dec. 3, 1998

Alvera M. Voorde, 91, of Ewing Avenue, South Bend, Ind., passed away after an illness at 7:45 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 3rd, in the Valley View Health Care Center, Elkhart, Ind.

Mrs. Voorde was born on Dec. 2, 1907, in South Bend, as the daughter of the late Alphonse and Ida (DeGroote) Bernaert.

On Sept. 14, 1935, in St. Matthew's Cathedral, South Bend, as Alvera Bernaert, she married Albert Voorde, who survives.

Mrs. Voorde leaves her husband Albert of sixty - three years. She was a loving mother to their six children which she raised in Jimtown on a farm for sixteen years: four daughter's, Jo Ann (Dan) Robinson of Mishawaka, Ind., Joyce (Jack) Simper of Elkhart, Therese (John) Gardner of Mishawaka and Marjorie Voorde of South Bend, and two sons, Fred (Sarah) Voorde of Elkhart and Don Voorde of South Bend. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 15 great - grandchildren; and by two brothers, Dick Bernaert of Mishawaka and Alvin Bernaert of San Bernardino, Calif.

Mrs. Voorde was employed by the South Bend Bait Company as an office worker. She was a member of St. Matthew's Cathedral.

Friends may call from 1 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 6, in the Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka. A wake service will be at 3 p.m. on Sunday in the funeral home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec 7, in St. Matthew's Cathedral, 1701 Miami Street, South Bend, with Bishop Joseph R. Crowley officiating. Burial will follow in Highland cemetery, South Bend.

Contributions in memory of Mrs. Voorde may be made to the Bishop Crowley Education Fund, Saint Matthew Cathedral School, 1015 E. Dayton, South Bend, IN 46613.

David G. Yanko, Jr.

Sept. 1, 1928 - Dec. 3, 1998

David Geza Yanko, Jr., age 70, of Alan Road, South Bend, departed from this life on Thursday, Dec. 3, 1998, in his residence after fighting a long illness.

David retired from RACO as a tool and die maker after 44 years of service in 1992.

He was born on Sept. 1, 1928, in South Bend, to the late Helen and David Geza Yanko, Sr. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Mary Orban.

David has been a dedicated husband to Rita T. (Lubinski), who survives, whom he lovingly married on June 24, 1950, in St. Adalbert Catholic Church. He was a wonderful father to his surviving son, Brian (Debbie) Yanko of Versailles, Kentucky; and two daughters, Annemarie (James A.) Phelps of South Bend and Beth Ann (Clint) Fuller of North Liberty.

He was a wonderful Grandpa to Rachel and Emily Yanko of Versailles, Kentucky, Michelle and Alan Kajzer of North Liberty, and Carl and Grace Fuller of North Liberty. He was also a great brother to his surviving sisters, Helen (Steve) Solnoky of South Bend, Anne (Phil) Cappert and Irene Mindykowski, both of Mishawaka, and Betty (David) Blosser of South Bend.

David also loved his in - laws, John (Esther) Lubinski, Eileen Lesher and the late Bernard (Marilyn) Lubinski, all of South Bend.

David was a member of the Crumstown Conservation Club, he served his country in the Korean Conflict, and was an usher for Our Lady of Hungary Church, and RACO Retirees Club. He enjoyed his family, friends, hunting, fishing, gardening, laughter and shopping at Meijers.

Precious memories of David will remain in the hearts of his family and everyone who knew him.

Funeral services will be at Our Lady of Hungary Church on Monday, Dec. 7, 1998, at 10 a.m., with Rev. Thomas Lemos officiating.

Friends may visit at St. Joseph Funeral Home on Sample Street from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 6, 1998. A combined Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Sunday by the parish and the usher's club.

Donations may be made to Home Health of Ancilla Health Care, 1625 E. Jefferson Blvd., Mishawaka, IN 46545.

We will think of you often, many times with tears, wishing we could see your smile and hear your laughter in our ears. We're grateful for the time we shared. We know you're in God's Kingdom now and, until we meet again, the Lord will bless and keep you; please tell him to let us in.

Robert A. Yoder

Feb. 6, 1932 - Dec. 1, 1998

Robert A. Yoder, 66, of Lincoln Way East, South Bend, Ind., died on Tuesday, Dec. 1, in his residence.

He was born on Feb. 6, 1932, in South Bend.

He is survived by his son and daughter - in - law, Robert M. and Maureen Yoder of Dunwoody, Ga.; a granddaughter, Michele Martinez of Twenty - Nine Palms, Calif.; a great - granddaughter, Mariana Martinez; two sisters, Joyce Elake of Florida and Elaine Pipke of South Bend; three brothers, Gene, Tom and Jimmy, all of South Bend; and by a half brother, John Woods of Indiana.

Mr. Yoder retired as a drafting engineer from General Dynamics. He was a member of the American Legion.

Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. today in the Forest G. Hay Funeral Home, 435 S. Ironwood, with Rev. Joseph Gaughan officiating. Friends may call just prior to services in the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Center for the Homeless in South Bend.

Betty J. Berk

Dec 10, 1926 - Nov. 30, 1998

SOUTH BEND - Betty J. Berk, 71, of Twykenham Drive, died Monday in her daughter's home in Granger of natural causes. Survivors include her husband, Robert E.; two daughters, Jacqueline J. Hans of Granger and Marie Bergman of South Bend; a son, Thomas E. of Niles; and two sisters, Dorthy Humphrey of Warren, Mich. and Rowena Johnson of South Bend. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Little Flower Catholic Church. Friends may call from 3 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in McGann Funeral Home, 2313 E. Edison Road, where a wake service will be at 3:30 p.m.

Orvan D. Fitz

March 16, 1912 - Dec. 1, 1998

WINAMAC - Orvan D. Fitz, 86, of 502 Shafer Drive, Monticello, Ind., formerly of Winamac, died Tuesday in Pulaski Health Care Center of natural causes. Survivors include his wife, Laura M.; a daughter, Beth Brooks of Colfax, Ind.; and two sons, Dewight of Huntsville, Texas and Gary of Winamac. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Frain Mortuary, where friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday and after 8 a.m. Friday.

Stella A. Fuson

April 10, 1909 - Nov. 30, 1998

MISHAWAKA - Stella A. Fuson, 89, of 811 E. 12th St., died Monday in Countryside Place Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Survivors include a daughter, Dolores Hein of Clinton, Iowa; and a son, James R. of Mishawaka. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in Bubb Funeral Chapel North, where friends may call two hours before services.

Viola Goodwin

March 31, 1923 - Nov. 28, 1998

ELKHART - Viola Goodwin, 75, of 229 St. Joseph Street, died Saturday in her home of natural causes. Survivors include a daughter, Rose M. Nave of Chicago; a son, Jerome Gill of Elkhart; and two sisters, Mary Jackson of Aberdeen, Miss. and Marie Johnson of Chicago. Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in Saint James A.M.E. Church. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today in Billings Funeral Home, where an Eastern Star and Order of the Golden Rule memorial service will be at 7 p.m., and one hour before services in the church.

Robert W. Graham

Aug. 24, 1919 - Nov. 30, 1998

MICHIGAN CITY - Robert W. Graham, 79, of Barker Road, died at10:46 a.m. Monday in St. Anthony Memorial Health Center. Survivors include his wife, Betty J. (Ziesmer); a daughter, Jane Avilla of LaPorte; two sons, Patrick of Escondido, Calif. and Michael of Highland Ranch, Colo.; and a brother, Paul of LaPorte. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Paul Lutheran Church. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today in Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel and after 10 a.m. Thursday in the church.

Charlotte J. Gritten

March 29, 1913 - Nov. 30, 1998

PLYMOUTH - Charlotte J. Gritten, 85, of 600 Oak Hill Ave., died Monday in Miller's Merry Manor. Survivors include three daughters, Shirley Johnson and Charlotte Bender, both of Plymouth, and Carolyn Lawrence of Morton Grove, Ill.; two sons, Wayne of Cookeville, Tenn. and Paul of Lawton, Mich.; and a sister, Harriet Hamill of Peoria, Ark. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Van Gilder Funeral Home, where friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. today.

Irene B. Hambley

March 24, 1913 - Nov. 30, 1998

NILES - Irene B. Hambley, 85, of 2907 S. 11th St., died Monday in her home of natural causes. Survivors include a daughter, Sharon B. Ward of Niles; two sons, Allan R. of Houghton, Mich. and Steven B. of Niles; and three sisters, Bernadine Bolle, Bessie Marshall and Betty Jones, all of Niles. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in Pifer - Smith Funeral Home, where friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today.

May 19, 1979 - Nov. 29, 1998

BERRIEN SPRINGS - Matthew Aaron Heimbuch, 19, of 1666 Rocky Weed Road, died Sunday in Lakeland Medical Center, St. Joseph, Mich. after an illness. Survivors include his parents, Gail and Henry Heimbuch of Berrien Springs; a sister, Heidi Heimbuch of Portage, Mich.; and two brothers, Mark and Adam of Berrien Springs. Mona E. Holdeman

Nov. 25, 1940 - Nov. 30, 1998

SOUTH BEND - Mona E. Holdeman, 58, of North Notre Dame Avenue, was dead on arrival at Saint Joseph's Regional Medical Center Monday of natural causes. Survivors include her husband, Charles L.; three daughters, Karen E. Huebner of Maryland, and Sharon A. Hubbard and Kimberly E. Marshall, both of South Bend. A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday in Forest G. Hay Funeral Home, 436 S. Ironwood. There will be no visitation.

Harold D. Koster

CASSOPOLIS - Harold D. Koster, 80, of 23329 Engle Street, died at 4 a.m. Tuesday in Lee Memorial Hospital, Dowagiac. Survivors include his wife, Zeyneb (Abiney); five daughters, Carol Leach of Malone, NY, Julia Zehr of Lowville, N.Y., Bonnie Rospendowski of Liverpool, N.Y., Cindy Bauman of Waddell, Ariz., and Sunny Price of Dowagiac; five sons, George of Cartharge, N.Y., Carey of Lowville, N.Y., Rick of Newport, N.Y., David of Glendale, Ariz., and Dennis of Buckeye, Ariz.; and two brothers, Howard of Turina, N.Y. and Dennis of Glenfield, N.Y. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Calvary Bible Church, Dowagiac. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today in Groner Funeral Home, Dowagiac.

Mabel Moore

July 21, 1924 - Nov. 29, 1998

LAPORTE - Mabel "Marie" Moore, 74, of W. Johnson Road, died Sunday at 2:25 p.m. in Valley Baptist Hospital, Harlington, Texas. Survivors include a daughter, Connie Symons, of LaPorte; three sons, Roy Jr. of Michigan City, Gene of Kingsford Heights and Charles of Harlington; five sisters, Ruth Able of St. Louis, Patricia Hall of Logansport, Ind., Joan Cox of Texas, Anita Price of Sacramento, Calif., and Sandra Reuelle of Porter; and two brothers, James F. King Jr. of Michigan City and William King of LaPorte. Private family services will be conducted on Friday. Root Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Alvin J. Nusbaum

March 15, 1920 - Nov. 30, 1998

MIDDLEBURY - Alvin J. Nusbaum, 78, of Scott Street, died at 9 a.m. Monday in the home of his daughter. Survivors include his wife, Betty (Eash); two daughters, Sally Weaver and Sara Baker, both of Middlebury; a son, Stephen of Goshen; and a brother, Noble of Middlebury. Services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Middlebury Church of the Brethren. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today in the church and one hour before services Thursday. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in Forrest Grove cemetery.

NAPPANEE - Eloise L. (Ganger) Ogle, 92, of 1827 Roys Ave., Elkhart, formerly of Nappanee, died Monday in Rosewood Terrace, Elkhart, of natural causes. Survivors include two brothers, Frederick Ganger of Goshen and Robert Ganger of Herndon, Penn. MISHAWAKA - Madelyn (Pete) Perschke, 74, of 15th Street., died Tuesday in Saint Joseph's Regional Medical Center. Survivors include her husband, Richard; a daughter, Sharon A. Sandusky of Edwardsburg; two sons, Kenneth J. Velte of Elkhart and Dennis W. Velte of Blackshear, Ga.; and two sisters, Florence Emeigh of LaPorte and Geraldine Lawfon of Mishawaka. Survivors include his wife, Edithann "Ginger" (Harris); three daughters, Susan Genz of Wyoming, Mich., Ellen Vitt of West Liberty, and Kathryn Meade of Sharpsburg, Ga.; a son, William of Indianapolis; and a sister, Elanor Allen of Oklahoma City, Okla. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Evergreen Baptist Church. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday in Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel and after 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the church.
