William E. Winter

PLYMOUTH - William Edward Winter, 67, a noted area photographer and resident of Plymouth for 41 years, died, following an illness, at his residence, 1709 Westgate Ave., at 7:10 p.m. on Saturday, November 21, 1998.
Bill was born in Chicago, the son of William Charles and Margaret Murphy Winter, on October 30, 1931. He achieved first in his class in Mount Carmel Catholic High School in Chicago. On the diving team, he took second place in the City of Chicago swim meet.
On May 26, 1951, in Chicago, Bill and Joanne Knudson were married
.
He worked for two years in the freight yard of the Illinois Central Railroad.
Photography was in his genes. His grandfather had a studio in Berwyn, Illinois, and Bill started his photographic career going door - to - door selling coupons redeemable for portraits at the Baby Tots Studio. In 1957, the family moved to Plymouth.
He decided to start his own photography business. At first it was Little Bill's, after a period of time it became Bill Winter, photographer. He loved taking pictures of children: he had gobs of patience and the knack of making them smile. He'd put crazy things on top of his head, make strange noises and manage to delight his little subjects long enough to capture that special look on film.
Bill became interested in doing weddings and his reputation grew. He soon became one of the most popular wedding photographers of northern Indiana, sometimes traveling as far as Chicago to shoot a wedding.
He worked until a few months ago when ill health made it difficult to continue. He kept every negative from every photograph he had ever taken in his career.
Bill loved to play golf and fish. He was a member and past officer of the Moose Lodge #741, the VFW #1162, the Fraternal Order of Police, the Indiana Sheriffs' Association, the Knights of Columbus in Chicago, and the Lone Indians.
Bill is survived by his wife Joanne, two sons and a daughter. His sons are: William Joseph and spouse Ellen, and their children, Willie R. and Matthew D. Winter of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Daniel Edward and his wife Deborah Winter, and their sons, Benjamin R. and Mark D. of Valparaiso, Ind. His daughter is Theresa A. and Eugene Ley, and their children, Daniel P. and Emily W. Ley of Plymouth.
A brother, Jack and Lori Winter of Oaklawn, Illinois, and a sister, Carol Fitzgerald and her husband Robert of Long Beach, Indiana, also survive.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents and an infant grandson, Andrew.
Friends of Bill and his family may visit together today from 2 to 8 p.m. in the Johnson - Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth. A Rosary service will be held at 1:30 p.m. and Moose Memorial Rites will begin at 8 p.m.
The funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 25, 1998, at 11 a.m. in St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church, of which he was a member, at 612 N. Michigan St., Plymouth. Father Anthony Gillespie will officiate. Interment will be in St. Michael's Catholic cemetery.
