Sept. 4, 1918 - March 31, 1999

MISHAWAKA - Harold James Weston, 80, of West Fourth Street, died Wednesday in Saint Joseph's Regional Medical Center, South Bend, of natural causes. Survivors include a daughter, JoAnn Gross of Edwardsburg; three sons, James of Osceola, Jerry of Granger, and Tommy of South Bend; a stepdaughter, Carol O'Keefe of Elkhart; a step son, Ron Lusk of Osceola; three sisters, Sadie DeWitt of Mishawaka, and Lucy Shennefield and Ladymaude Barrier, both of Waterloo, Ala.; and two brothers, Dallas and Gene, both of Osceola. Service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Bubb Funeral Chapel North, where friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday.

Samuel A. Williams

June 28, 1930 - March 27, 1999

SOUTH BEND - Samuel Arthur Williams, 68, of South Kenmore, died Saturday in Saint Joseph's Regional Medical Center. Survivors include his wife, Lois E.; three daughters, Karen Moody of Chicago and Erica Williams and Corlette "Corky" Beuchamp, both of South Bend; six sons, Michael Dearmond, Craig Williams, Kevin Williams and Arthur Williams, all of South Bend, Billy Benman of California, and Samuel A. Williams Jr. of Chicago; six sisters, Mildred Denny and Shirley Pope, both of South Bend, Jean Williams, Kathryn Williams and Kizzy McGell, all of Oakland, Calif., and Sara Sodaka of Chicago; and two brothers, Joe of Massillon, Ohio, and Daniel of Oakland. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church, where friends may call one hour before services. Alford's Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Mary M. Abroham

April 13, 1910 - March 30, 1999

Mary M. Abroham, 88, passed away on Tuesday, March 30, in Naples, Fla.

She was born on April 13, 1910, in South Bend, Ind. When she was a small child, her family moved to Niles (Bertrand), Mich. where she resided until 1982 when she and her sister, Victoria retired to Naples.

A Niles H. S. graduate, class of 1927, one of the first positions she held was as Clerk of the Four Flags Hotel in Niles. Having worked at various places in both South Bend and Niles, she will probably be best remembered for her services as assistant manager of Niles 31 Outdoor Theater until she left to care for her invalid mother.

She is survived by her sister, Victoria Abroham of Naples; a nephew, William "Bill" Kuehl of Elkhart, Ind.; her nieces, Jo Ann (Kuehl) Williams of Beverly Hills, Mich. and Alice (Abroham) Dewey of Temperance, Mich. and Naples; one grand - nephew; three grand - nieces; and by a great - grand nephew and a great - grand niece.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Alexander J. Abroham of South Bend; and by a sister, Cecelia V. Kuehl of Elkhart.

There will be no services. The Beachwood Society, Inc. of Naples is in charge of arrangements.

In accordance with her wishes, please make contributions to the Association for the Disabled of Elkhart County in memory of "Mary" M. Abroham, 19670 State Road 120, Bristol, IN 46507.

Both sets of grandparents emigrated to the United States about 1890, and went directly from Ellis Island to South Bend. They lived and worked all their lives there. Many descendants still do. It may interest you that she and her sister still subscribed to the newspaper for over ten years after moving to Florida.

Fairy Albert

Aug. 6, 1903 - March 26, 1999

Mrs. Fairy Forrester Albert of Port Richey, Fla., formerly of South Bend, Ind. and Sebring, Fla. died at 8:45 a.m. on Friday, March 26.

Mrs. Albert was born on Aug. 6, 1903, in Huntington County, Ind., and lived in South Bend 53 years.

In November of 1921 she married Glen H. Forrester, who died in March of 1960. In May of 1976 she married Dorland C. Albert of Mishawaka, Ind.

Mrs. Albert retired from Uniroyal Plastics in 1965 after 20 years of service. She was a member of American Legion Post #303 Auxiliary for 44 years.

She is survived by a daughter, Marjorie Forrester Dunfee of Port Richey, Fla.; two grandchildren, James H. Dunfee, Jr. of Mishawaka and Lynn Dunfee Watson of Roann, Ind.; and by four great - grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday in the Chapel of St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park with Rev. Samuel Brookshire of Clay United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow. There will be no visitation.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or to the American Cancer Society.

Welsheimer Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Louis J. Bernero

June 13, 1920 - March 30, 1999

PLYMOUTH - Louis J. Bernero, 78, a veteran of World War II and a life long resident of Marshall County, has died. Louie, a summer resident of 14365 Lawrence Lake Drive, Plymouth, died at Pilgrim Manor Nursing Home, following an illness, on Tuesday, March 30, 1999 at 2:22 p.m.

Born on June 13, 1920, in Argos, Louie was the son of Louis J., Sr., and Mary Brizzolara Bernero. He was educated in Argos schools, graduating from Argos High School in the class of 1938.

In March of 1941, Louie joined the United States Army. He was stationed in Sicily, the Po Valley, Naples, Rome - Arno and the North Appenines. He saw a lot of action in the war and received a number of decorations including the Bronze Star; the FAME Theater ribbon with a bronze star; the American Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Ribbon.

After returning from the service in 1945, he owned and operated Louie's Tavern in Argos and later, the Robin Hood in Plymouth.

On Sept. 2, 1948, in Plymouth, Louie and Mildred I. Zahm were married .

In 1971 they moved to Fort Myers, Florida where Louie was employed at the Southwest Regional International Airport for 18 years. He retired in 1994. The Berneros spent the winters in Fort Myers and the summers at Lawrence Lake in Plymouth.

He enjoyed fishing and hunting and spending time with his grandchildren.

Louie is survived by his wife, Mildred, a son, Dr. John R. Bernero, Culver, and two daughters, Mary M. Chamberlin and her children, Kedric and Kimberly Chamberlin of Charleston, S.C. and Sue and Dr. Rod Kubley and their children, James and Rachel Kubley of Plymouth. A sister, Maris Alvis, Indianapolis, also survives.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and one sister.

Friends may call on Saturday, April 3, 1999, at the Johnson - Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth, from 4 to 8 p.m. A Rosary Service will be held that evening at 8 p.m. in the funeral home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Father Anthony Gillespie, pastor of St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church, 612 N. Center St., Plymouth, on Monday April 5, 1999, at 11 a.m. Military honors will be provided by the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Marshall County Post 1162. Entombment will follow in New Oakhill cemetery Mausoleum.

Memorial gifts may be made in Louie's memory to St. Michael's Mission 2000 or to the Marshall County Hospice.

Charles E. Bode

Feb. 16, 1914 - March 29, 1999

Charles E. Bode, 85, of Crestwood of Tanglewood Trace, passed away at 6:48 p.m. on Monday, March 29, 1999, in Fountainview Place of Mishawaka. Mr. Bode was born on Feb. 16, 1914 in South Bend, and was a lifelong area resident. He retired in 1975 from the Bendix Corporation. On Dec. 29, 1933, in South Bend, he married Ina M. Jones, who survives.

Also surviving are his two sons, Robert E. (Eileen) Bode of New Carlisle and Thomas R. (Barbara) Bode of Granger; nine grandchildren, Dennis (Becky) Bode, Donald Bode, Dale (Cathy) Bode, Debbie (Steve) Paul, Dane Bode, Erin Bode, Brent Bode, Bryce Bode and Brooke Bode; seven great - grandchildren, Danille Bode, Anthony Bode, Jeremy Bode, Amanda Bode, Stephanie Paul, Ashley Paul and Staci Paul.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 3, 1999, in St. Paul's Lutheran Church, with Rev. Gregory Fiechtner officiating. Burial will follow in Highland cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, and one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.

Mr. Bode was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, UAW Local 9, and Bowlers Country Club. He was also a founding member of the German Township Volunteer Fire Department.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's Building Fund, 51490 Laurel Road, South Bend, Indiana 46637.

Rosemary B. Burns

July 18, 1921 - March 30, 1999

Rosemary B. Burns, 77, of 19650 Mason Street, Cassopolis, died Tuesday, March 30, 1999 at 10:05 p.m. in Elkhart General Hospital, Elkhart, after an illness. She was born July 18, 1921 in Mason Twp., Cass County, Michigan, the daughter of Ernest L. and Edith E. (Eade) Tunks, and had been a lifelong Mason Twp. resident.

Mrs. Burns married Marvin L. Burns October 15, 1948 in the Kessington Community Church, Mason Twp. Born to the union were a daughter and a son - Rose Ann Burns Giles and James Burns. James departed this life January 31, 1992, as did Rose Ann on January 10, 1993 and Marvin on January 26, 1986. Two brothers also preceded her in death - Ernest Tunks, Jr. on April 6, 1997 and Alfred Fred Tunks, on December 5, 1997. Surviving are 2 granddaughters - Laura E. Giles and Dani Marie Giles, and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Burns had attended Hunter College in New York City, and also Indiana University and Michigan State University. She served her country in World War II as a U.S. Navy Wave, and served as the Mason Twp. Clerk from 1966 until 1972. She was also a member of the Birch Lake Embroidery Club.

A funeral service will be held Friday, April 2, 1999 at 11 a.m. in the Connelly Funeral Home, Cassopolis. Officiating will be Rev. Ronald W. Liechty, former Pastor at Mason Township Baptist Church. A visitation period will be held Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home, and cremation will follow.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association or to the Cass County Cancer Service.

Mary B. Chapman

March 27, 1910 - March 20, 1999

Mary "Bernice" (Hummer) Chapman, 89, formerly of 2105 Brady Lane, Lafayette, Ind., died at 9:35 a.m. on Tuesday, March 30, in Heritage Healthcare in Lafayette.

She was born on March 27, 1910, in South Bend, Ind., and had lived in Lafayette since 1951, moving from Goodland, Ind. She graduated from South Bend Central High School in 1927.

She married Garold E. Chapman on April 9, 1931, in Elkhart, Ind. He preceded her in death on Aug. 21, 1996. She was also preceded in death by a son, a granddaughter, a brother and three sisters.

She retired in 1975 from J.C. Penney where she had worked in the stock room. She was later a receptionist at the Indiana Pythian Home until 1988. She was a member of the Pythian Sisters Olympia Temple and enjoyed music, sewing and her family.

She is survived by three daughters, Charlotte Weiand of South Bend, Janet Neubauer of Miami, Fla., and Loretta Hobson of Lafayette; and a brother, George Hummer of South Bend; and by 16 grandchildren and 32 great - grandchildren.

Friends may call at the Hippensteel Funeral Home, Lafayette, from noon until service time at 1 p.m. on Friday, with Rev. Kenneth Kraft officiating. Interment will be at Tippecanoe Memorial Gardens in West Lafayette, Ind.

Lyllas I. Dorman

April 5, 1905 - March 29, 1999

Mrs. Lyllas Irene Dorman, 93, died on Monday, March 29, at Lakeland Medical Center, Niles. She was a lifetime resident of the area.

She was born on April 5, 1905, in New Lisbon, Wis., the daughter of the late Charles and Bertha (Hoxter) Dorman.

Mrs. Dorman was a member of the First Christian Church of Dowagiac, Mich. and was past Cub Scout and Campfire Girls leader.

She is survived by a daughter, Darleen L. Phillips of Niles. She also raised four grandchildren, Terrie Van Zant of Ohio, Bonita Walters and John Criffield, both of Niles, and Sandra Kytta of South Bend, Ind. She is also survived by seven grandchildren; 15 great - grandchildren; a daughter - in - law, JoAnne (Dorman) Easton; and by a brother, Harold Sharp of Florida.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, LuAnn Martha (Dorman) Gage in 1975; and by a son, Carlton Clayton "Cart" Dorman in 1989.

Memorial contributions are requested to First Christian Church, Dowagiac, Mich.

Family and friends will gather at 9:30 a.m. today at the McLauchlin - Clark Funeral Home, Dowagiac, and proceed to Crane cemetery for a graveside service at 10 a.m.

Robert W. French

May 8, 1911 - March 26, 1999

Robert Warren French, 87, of 122 S. Detroit Street, Buchanan, Mich., passed away on Friday, March 26, in Lakeland Continuing Care Center, Berrien Center, Mich. He had been in failing health since the beginning of the year.

Born in South Bend, Ind. on May 8, 1911, to Robert Warren French and the former Lura Keller, he began his long and distinguished academic career, graduating with high honors in his Buchanan High School class in 1928. He received his B.A. degree in 1932, an M.A. degree in 1933, and Ph.D. in 1937, all from the University of Michigan.

From 1937 - 1941, Dr. French was a partner in the firm of Johnson - Smith Company; an associate professor of international trade at Louisiana State University from 1941 - 1946; a professor of international trade at the University of Texas from 1946 - 1949; professor of economics and dean of the school of business administration at Tulane University, 1949 - 1955; and director of the Port of New Orleans from 1956 - 1960.

Dr. French became president of the Tax Foundation, Inc. of New York from 1960 - 1963; director of executive programs and professor of management of the graduate school of business at the University of Southern California from 1963 - 1965; acting dean of the University of Illinois at Chicago Circle from 1966 - 1968; professor of economics and management at University of Illinois, 1965 - 1970; assistant to the president, University of Alabama, Birmingham and professor of economics at that institution from 1970 - 81.

In addition to authoring numerous papers, articles, and books in his academic field, he researched and wrote Living Together: Buchanan and Clark, 1904 - 63, a history of the relationship between a small town and a large corporation. For many years he wrote "100 Years Ago," "This Day in American History" and "Year in Review" for The Berrien County Record.

He was a trustee of Dillard University from 1960 - 1994; a member of the Historical Society of Michigan from 1984 - 1990; Western Michigan Methodist Conference on Archives and History 1983 - 1989, 1993 - ; Historical Society of Michigan; Chicago Historical Society; Berrien County Historical Association; Chicago Architectural Foundation; Art Institute of Chicago; Berrien Community Foundation; Phi Kappa Phi; Pi Gamma Mu; Omicron Delta Kappa; Beta Gamma Sigma; Alpha Lambda Delta; and the First United Methodist Church of Buchanan.

On July 8, 1934, in Sparta, Mich., he married Dorothy Smith. She died on June 15, 1990. In Buchanan, on Jan. 2, 1993, he married Nadene Shaner, who survives.

He is also survived by two daughters, Nancy McWhorter of Atlanta, Ga. and Judith French Tronsrue of Seattle, Wash.; four stepchildren; four grandchildren; and by two great - grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 9 at the First United Methodist Church in Buchanan with Doctor William Sanders officiating.

A visitation will be in Swem Funeral Home from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 8.

Memorials may be made to the Buchanan Public Library.

Marie E. McLauchlin

July 28,1909 - March 30, 1999

Mrs. Marie F. (Holloway) McLauchlin, 89, of 125 Silverbrook Avenue, Niles, Mich., died following a two year illness at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 30, at her home.

She was born in Delta, Ohio on July 28, 1909 to Homer and Olive (Sprague) Holloway, and had lived in Niles since 1921, coming from Ohio.

Mrs. McLaughlin was a former telephone operator and also worked at Western Union.

She was a member of Church of the Savior in Niles, Phi Chi Epsilon Sorority, and the Niles Music Club. Mrs. McLauchlin enjoyed the hobbies of sewing and reading.

On Dec. 31, 1933, in Niles, she married Clarence L. McLauchlin, who survives.

She is also survived by her son, Larry McLauchlin of Grand Haven, Mich.; three grandsons; four great - grandchildren; and by her sisters, Olive Camp of Buchanan, Mich., and Charlene Parker and Jackie Womack, both of Niles.

Funeral services for Mrs. McLauchlin will be at 2:30 p.m. today at Halbritter Funeral Home with the Reverend Leon Roggen of Niles officiating. Interment will be at Silverbrook cemetery in Niles.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

Contributions in memory of Mrs. McLauchlin may be made to choice of donor.
