Gleda 'Wimpy' Moore

Gleda R. "Wimpy" Moore, 87, 1801 S. Washington St., died at 7:40 p.m. Sunday, April 1, 2001, at Windsor Estates Health and Rehab Center. Born Nov. 14, 1913, in Frankfort, she was the daughter of Lewis and Ula (Burns) Brittain. On Jan. 22, 1934, in Kokomo, she married George E. Moore, who died Nov. 20, 1994.

She graduated from Flora High School. She was a member of the Chapel Hill Christian Church; the Red Cross; Del Ra; Senior Citizens and Delco Euchre Club. She enjoyed bowling and watching basketball and baseball.

Surviving are two sisters and brothers-in-law, Myrtle and Robert Hensley, Kokomo; Bonita and Glenn Black, Tennessee; a sister-in-law, Phoebe Brittain, Kokomo, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a step-father, Marvin Albitz; two sisters, Viola Schimmel and Leota Stahl and three brothers, Leroy Albitz, Chester and Floyd Brittain.

Services are 2 p.m. Thursday at Sunset Memory Garden Funeral Home, 2097 W. Alto Road. The Rev. Steve Allen will officiate. Burial will follow in Crown Point cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Chapel Hill Christian Church Building Fund.

Raymond Gresley

Raymond G. Gresley, 67, died at 11:43 p.m. Sunday, April 1, 2001, at Saint Joseph Hospital & Health Center. Born April 28, 1933, in Fort Wayne, he was the son of Grayston Gresley and Marion Binkley. On April 8, 1988, in Kokomo, he married Charlene Gresley, who survives.

He served in the U.S. Navy. He retired from Chrysler in 1993. He belonged to United Auto Workers Local 1302 and the American Legion. He enjoyed radio control airplanes and spending time at the Converse Airport flying them. He also enjoyed computers, troubleshooting classes, and being a volunteer at the Saint Joseph Hospital.

Surviving are his wife; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Debra Faunce and Suellen and Herb McGlothlin, all of Kokomo; Tracy and Steven Kershaw, Plainfield; a son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Wynita Gresley, Greentown; a sister and brother-in-law, Joan and Van VanDenAssem, Tucson, Ariz.; a brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Anne Lee Stetler, Fort Wayne; grandchildren, Rachel and Abigail Faunce, Kokomo; Crystal and Nathan Gresley, Greentown; Ariel, Quintin, Samantha and Erica Kershaw, all of Plainfield and two step-grandchildren, Calla and Richie.

Services are 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 824 S. Purdum St. Father Alejandro Pasternoster will officiate. Burial will be in Antioch cemetery, Hoagland at 1 p.m. Friday. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Sunset Memory Garden cemetery, 2097 W. Alto Road, where a prayer service will be held at 6:30 p.m.

George Gaskin

George V. Gaskin Sr., 86, Manorcare Health Services, died at 8:26 a.m. Monday, April 2, 2001, at the facility. Born Oct. 6, 1914, in Kokomo, he was the son of William Franklin and Blanche Etta Artis Gaskin, and the youngest of 12 children. On June 25, 1937, in Kokomo, he married Harriett M. Malone, who died Sept. 8, 1998.

He retired from Chrysler Transmission Plant with 36 years of service. He had formerly worked at the Knights of Columbus Hall and Raabs Store. He was a member of Historic Wayman Chapel A.M.E. Church; United Auto Workers Local 685; the Black and Tan Club; Cavaliers Club, and had formerly served on the Carver Center Board. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed baseball, basketball and fishing.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Judith L. and Vincent Payne Sr., Garden Grove, Calif.; three grandchildren, Austin C. and Vincent M. Payne Jr., Garden Grove, Calif.; Brigitte E. Gaskin, Kokomo; two great-grandchildren, Simone and Amaris Gaskin, Kokomo; a brother and sister-in-law, Carmi Artis Gaskin and wife Hazel, Kokomo, and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife; a son George J. Gaskin; a grandson, Troy E. Gaskin; a brother, Worley David Gaskin and three sisters, Juanita Foster, Loran Bennett, and Sylvia Crane.

Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at Historic Wayman Chapel A.M.E., 920 N. Apperson Way. The Rev. Michael Carson will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until service time at the church on Thursday. Ellers Mortuary, Main Street Chapel, 725 S. Main St., is in charge of the arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Historic Wayman Chapel A.M.E. Church.

Julia Meritt

Julia F. Meritt, 87, 603 St. Joseph Drive, died at 1 a.m. Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at Saint Vincent Hospital, Indianapolis. Born Jan. 20, 1914, in New Richmond, she was the daughter of James L. and Zora (Magruder) Hombeck. On April 9, 1939, in New Richmond, she married Olin Meritt, who died March 8, 1960.

She was a 1932 graduate of New Richmond High School. She was employed for 47 years by Kokomo Center Township Schools, retiring in June 1997. She was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star #498 of New Richmond, where she was a past Worthy Matron. She enjoyed her family, her many friends, and her bridge club.

Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Maureen M. Thomas and her husband Jeffery S. Taylor, Chicago; Elaine S. and David K. Needham, Kokomo; Pamela A. and James M. Burt, Fort Wayne; five grandchildren, Kristi Severns and husband Craig, Kokomo; Carrie A. Eaker, New Castle; Gretchen Thomas, San Francisco, Calif.; Mark Needham and wife Angie, Melbourne, Fla.; Meridith G. Burt, Canon City, Colo; four great-grandchildren, Ryan Eaker and wife Jen, Crown Point; Kyle and Courtney Eaker, both of New Castle; David A. Needham, Melbourne, Fla. and a step great-grandson, Cameron Leet, Melbourne, Fla. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a brother, Hugh M. Hornbeck, and a sister, Ina E. Petry.

Services are 1 p.m. Friday at Fenn & Shirley Mortuary, Colonial Chapel, 1315 W. Lincoln Road. The Rev. Dr. Gary Forbes will officiate. A committal service will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at Oakland cemetery, New Richmond with Mrs. Velma Keesling officiating. Friends may call from 2 to 8 Thursday at the funeral home, where an Eastern Star Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, 219 W. Mulberry St., Kokomo, 46891, for the roof repair fund, and/or to the American Red Cross, 210 W. Walnut St., Kokomo, 46901, for the bloodmobile program.

Rollin 'Jack' Sullivan

Rollin J. "Jack" Sullivan, 66, 5909 Arrowhead Blvd., Kokomo, died at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 2, 2001, at Indiana University Medical Center. Born Nov. 4, 1934, in Livingston, Tenn., he was the son of James Thomas and Mary Lampie (Brown) Sullivan. On Feb. 18, 1955, he married Betty (Causey) Sullivan.

He was a truck driver and worked at Haynes International. He was a member of Windfall Masons. He liked to read and attend flea markets, fish, and was a race fan.

Surviving are his wife; two sons, John Robert and Greg Sullivan, both of Kokomo; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; sisters, Ruby Neal, Tipton, and Lorie Clark, Livingston, Tenn. He was preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers.

Services are 10 a.m. Thursday at Porter Funeral Home, 726 E. North St., Tipton. Pastors Richard Ferguson and Bill Moser will officiate. Burial will be in Brookside cemetery, Windfall. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Cletus Sutton

BUNKER HILL -- Cletus L. Sutton, 82, R.R. 1, died at 2:35 a.m. Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at Sycamore Village Healthcare. Born Aug. 2, 1918, in Miami County, he was the son of James Loyd and Maude Marie (Condo) Sutton. On May 17, 1941, he married Velma (Shrock) Sutton, who preceded him in death in 1986.

He retired from Delco in 1985 where he had been employed as a welder. He was a member of Salem Christian Church; Masonic Lodge #683; Peru Maennerchor; United Auto Workers Local 292; was a trustee for Washington Township from 1958 to 1962, and was a school bus driver for Liberty School.

Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Linda Sutton, Kokomo; Chuck and Tonya Sutton, Peru; two daughters, Sharon Sutton, Bunker Hill; Lynda Sutton, Kokomo; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, and a brother, W. Dee Sutton, Peru. He was preceded in death by his wife.

Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at Allen Funeral Home, 115 S. Elm St., Bunker Hill. The Rev. Bill Shewman will officiate. Burial will be in Rankin cemetery, Miami County. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Otis Johnston

Otis L. Johnston, 96, 3518 S. Lafountain St., formerly of Michigantown, died at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 1, 2001, at Howard Community Hospital. Born June 4, 1904, in Rose Hill, Va., he was the son of James Harmon and Sidy Elizabeth (Martin) Johnston. On Dec. 25, 1931, he married Elva M. (Burgan), who died Sept. 4, 2000.

He had worked in the coal mines in Lee County, Va., for 26 years and later retired from Continental Steel Corporation after 17 years. He was a member of Zion Apostolic Tabernacle Church, Frankfort; United Steel Workers Union and United Mine Workers.

Surviving are a son, James A. Johnston, Forest; two daughters and sons-in-law, Deloris and Jim "Red" McCarter, Forest; Mildred "Millie" Johnston, Gas City; 13 grandchildren, Kim Kelley, Karen Ehrenberg, Thomas Craig Jr., Mitchell Craig, Laura Craig, Jim McCarter Jr., Pam Light, Nancy Olson, Susan Timmons, Fred McCarter, Otis L. Johnston II, Raymond Johnston, Donald Johnston; 18 great-grandchildren; a brother, Walter Johnston, Middlefork, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three brothers, four sisters and a great-grandson, J.R. Olson.

Services are 3 p.m. Saturday at Stout & Son Funeral Home, 200 E. Main St., Russiaville. The Rev. Robert Hackler will officiate. Burial will be in Middlefork cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Middlefork cemetery, with envelopes available at the funeral home.

Judge John Wood

Judge John C. Wood, 57, 211 W. Walnut St., died at 9 a.m. Sunday, April 1, 2001, at Saint Joseph Hospital & Health Center. Born June 12, 1943, in Kokomo, he was the son of Charles and Mary E. (Krull) Wood. On Nov. 6, 1970, in Louisville, he married Kathy Roberts, who survives.

He graduated from Kokomo High School in 1961. He got his bachelor's degree from Ball State University in 1967 and his law degree from the University of Louisville Law School in 1971. As a kid he worked at A & W Root Beer Stand on Markland Ave. and had also been employed at Chrysler Corp.

He had been the current Superior Court III Judge since 1997 and also had practiced law since 1971 where he had his private practice also in Kokomo. He had served as Deputy Public Defender and Deputy Prosecutor. He also taught criminal justice at Indiana University Kokomo.

He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church; a board member for the Kokomo-Howard County Public Library; a member of the Howard Masonic Lodge 95 F&AM; Scottish Rite; Murat Temple; Kokomo Shrine Club; Elks Lodge and Columbia Club. He served on the board for the Friendship Home and was a member of the Republican Party.

Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Tami Wood, Kokomo; a son and daughter-in-law, Matt and Jennifer Wood, Bloomington; a grandson, Jackson Wood, Bloomington; a brother, Charles "Chuck" Wood, Noblesville; two nephews, Brad and Greg Wood, both of Kokomo; step-mother, Helen Wood, Kokomo, and a aunt Phyllis Jean Baldwin, Logansport. He was preceded in death by his mother and father and his step father Willard "Bill" McCoy.

Services are 11 a.m. Friday at Grace United Methodist Church, 219 W. Mulberry St. Dr. Gary Forbes and Rev. Paul Enochs will officiate. Burial will be in North Union cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Stout & Son Funeral Home, 200 E. Main St., Russiaville, and at the church one hour before the service on Friday. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Society with envelopes available at the funeral home.

Fred Stine

Fred L. Stine, 87, Kokomo, died at 6:10 p.m. Monday, April 2, 2001, at Saint Joseph Hospital & Health Center. Born June 11, 1913, in Orange County, he was the son of George and Nellie (Slaughter) Stine. On Aug. 24, 1937, in Huntington, he married Frieda (Devore) Stine, who survives.

He attended Kokomo High School. He was retired from Continental Steel where he had worked for over 36 years. He was a handy man and could do most anything. He enjoyed wood working and golf when he was younger. He was a devoted husband and father.

Surviving are his wife; a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas L. and Sara Stine, Kokomo; a daughter and son-in-law, Sherry and Darvel Harner, Kokomo; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; six step grandchildren; 15 step great-grandchildren; a sister, Helen Wright, Kokomo; a brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Ethel Stine, Kokomo, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother and sister.

Services are 11 a.m. Friday at Ellers Mortuary, Main Street Chapel, 725 S. Main St. The Rev. Ken Byland will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Memory Garden cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Scott Johnson

Scott W. Johnson, 83, Kokomo, died at 2:25 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at his home.

Arrangements are pending at Ellers Mortuary, Webster Street Chapel, 3400 S. Webster St.

Edward Huddleston

Edward Huddleston, 68, 2233 W. Jefferson St., died at 2:43 a.m. Monday, April 2, 2001, at Saint Joseph Hospital & Health Center.

Arrangements are pending at Stout & Son Funeral Home, 200 E. Main St., Russiaville.

Walter Quick Jr.

MICHIGANTOWN -- Walter Lee Quick Jr., 73, 4738 N. CR. 500 E., died at 11:15 a.m. Saturday March 31, 2001, at St. Vincent Hospital, Frankfort. Born Sept. 30, 1927, in Michigantown, he was the son of Walter and Electa Belle (Dunn) Quick. On Aug. 20, 1965, he married Gertie M. (Miller) Martin.

He graduated from Michigantown High School in 1945 and served in the Merchant Marines and the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1947. He worked as a maintenance supervisor for Public Service for 38 years, retiring Jan. 1, 1990. He also worked for Zackery Confections, C.F. Industries and the Frankfort Times. He was a member of the Michigantown Christian Church; American Mensa; American Legion Post 12; Fraternal Order of the Police Lodge 69; and was a life member of the Indiana State Rifle and Pistol Association. He had lived in Michigantown all his life.

Surviving are his wife; two sons, Rick Martin, Burlington; Steven L. Martin, Frankfort; a daughter, Rita K. Martin, Frankfort; a sister, Enid Record, Michigantown; a grandson and spouse, Derrick and Jennifer Martin, Frankfort, and two great-grandchildren.

Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at Goodwin Funeral Home, 200 S. Main St., Frankfort. Minister Bob Woods will officiate. Burial will be in Whiteman cemetery, Michigantown. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
