Mary Loeffler
Mary Elizabeth Loeffler, 94, Manor Care of Kokomo, died at 4:07 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at the facility. Born Dec. 25, 1905, in St. Francisville, Ill., she was the daughter of John and Emma (Bliss) Beesley. On June 8, 1935, in Allendale, Ill., she married
Conrad Kent Loeffler, who died Oct. 7, 1984.
She graduated from Western Michigan University at Kalamazoo, Mich. She was a school teacher for Fremont-Michigan City School Corp., and retired in 1970 after 25 years of service. She was a member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, Kokomo, and also was a member of the Eastern Star Lodge. She enjoyed teaching because of her love for children and delight in their eagerness to learn. She was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother. Her strong faith in God was reflected in the way she lived her life.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Richard K. and Thais Loeffler, Lake Bluff, Ill.; a daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Ron Merrill, Kokomo; five grandchildren, Keith and Kelly Loeffler; Sherry and Bruce Merrill; Ronda Hall; four great-grandchildren, Benjamin Canfield; Rachel and David Hall; Haley Merrill. She was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
Services are 2:30 p.m. today at Wabash Presbyterian Church, Orio, Ill. Burial will be in Wabash Presbyterian Church cemetery. Friends may call from 1:30 p.m. until the service time at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, or the American Cancer Fund.

Oren Root
GREENFIELD -- Oren L. Root, 70, died Monday, Dec. 27, 1999, at Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis. Born Sept. 24, 1929, in Adair County, Iowa, he was the son of Nellie Greeley and Oren Root. He was married
to Rita Moor Root.
He attended Indiana University. He is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was an employee of the State of Indiana from 1958 until 1991, where he worked for the State Board of Accounts and State Budget Agency. In 1991, he received the Sagamore of the Wabash Award. He was a member of Speedway Masonic Lodge, Indianapolis Scottish Rite and Murat Shrine.
Surviving are his wife; four sons, Mike Root, Indianapolis; Mark Root, Baldwin, Mo.; David and Brian Bilby, both of Indianapolis; one daughter, Marla Root, Indianapolis; a brother, H. Paul Root, Key Biscayne, Fla.; two sisters, Colleen McConnell and Pauline Burton, both of Kokomo; and one grandchild.
Services were 1 p.m. Wednesday at Pasco Mortuary. Friends called from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Make a Wish Foundation or Shriners Children’s Hospital.
Mary Wertz
BURLINGTON -- Mary Louise Wertz, 67, 5625 S. Ind. Road 29, died at 8:56 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999 at Home Hospital, Lafayette. Born Oct. 4, 1932, in Carroll County, she was the daughter of Ernest and Vesta (Barnard) Snell. On Feb. 15, 1952, she married
Bob Wertz Jr., who died Aug. 7, 1990.
She was a 1950 graduate of Carrollton Township High School. She was a homemaker but was best known as the "Cake Lady." She had baked and decorated cakes for weddings, birthdays, graduations and special occasions for many years. She was also a member and the janitor of the Burlington United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Euchre Club. She had lived in the Burlington Community since 1964.
Surviving are three sons and two daughters-in-law, Rick and Sandra Wertz and Randy Wertz, all of Burlington; Ronnie and Mary Wertz, Zionsville; five grandchildren, Jaime, Jenna, Adam, Robert, and Matthew Wertz; a brother, Don Snell, Cutler. She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Terri Wertz, and a sister, Elizabeth Long.
Services are 10 a.m. Friday at Neptune Funeral Home, 44 Michigan Road. The Rev. David Duke will officiate. Burial will be in Maple Lawn cemetery, Flora. Anna ‘Kay’ Henry
TIPTON -- Anna C. "Kay" Henry, 80, 1672 N. 250 West, died at 2:40 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at her residence.

ELWOOD -- Hazel J. Bieri, 90, 1007 N. 9th St., formerly of Tipton, died at 8:10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at Dickey Nursing Home.

Susan Stewart
ALEXANDRA -- Susan A. Stewart, 55, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999, at St. Vincent-Carmel Hospital, Carmel, from an unexpected illness. Born Dec. 18, 1944, in Logansport, she was the daughter of Ralph E. and Theresa Cunningham Downham. She was married
to Glen G. Stewart for 36 years.
She had lived in Alexandria since moving there from Galveston in 1963. She graduated from Young America High School and attended Indiana University Bloomington. She retired as a sales associate from the J.C. Penney Co., having worked in the Noblesville and Elwood stores for 15 years. She had been an active member of the Southside Wesleyan Church in Elwood for several years. In the church, she has held the positions of song leader, church secretary, board member and taught most of the Sunday school classes through the years. She always supported her children and was a member of the Alexandria Band Boosters and the Alexandria Tiger Athletic Boosters. Her family was the focal point of her life. She also enjoyed raising Alaskan Malamute dogs with her husband.
Surviving are her husband; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Tammy and Bill May, Marion; Tina and Tony Hahn and Janet and Robby Alexander, all of Anderson; Jenny Stewart, Muncie; a son and daughter-in-law, Glen and Misty Stewart II, Alexandria; mother-in-law, Freida Stewart, Elwood; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Larry and Donna Downham and Marion Downham, all of Galveston; Terry and Judy Downham, Burlington; four grandchildren, Gabrielle May, Will May IV, T.J. Hahn, Keegan Stewart; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.

James ‘Bud’ Schwartz
James G. "Bud" Schwartz, 76, Kokomo, died at 3:43 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999, at St. Vincent Hospital, Indianapolis, with his wife, daughter and grandson present. Born March 11, 1923, in Kokomo, he was the son of James G. "Guy" and Orpha Blanche (Lewis) Schwartz. On Dec, 31, 1947, in Kokomo, he married
Betty R. (Florek) Schwartz, who survives.
He graduated from Kokomo High School in 1941. He was inducted into the Army in December 1942 and received his basic training at Camp Robinson, Ark. After completing Officers Candidate School at Fort Benning, he joined the 80th Infantry Division as a second lieutenant in November 1943. In 1944, he was awarded both the Distinguished Service Cross for valor and the Purple Heart for wounds received in combat. He was promoted to captain in 1945. On June 8, 1945, he received the Bronze Star for meritorious service. Other decorations he received included the American Campaign Medal, European Theatre Medal with three battle stars, Victory Medal and the Combat Infantry Badge. On Feb. 26, 1946, he was honorably discharged from the service.
In 1952 he graduated from Indiana University with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. In 1952 he joined Delco Electronics, later retiring as assistant controller in 1980. He was a lifetime member of American Legion Post 6; Elks Lodge 190; Forty & Eight Club, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1152. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed reading.
Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Cheryl S. Boone, Columbus, Ohio; Cindy L. Schwartz, Kokomo; two brothers, Richard D. Schwartz, Carmel; William C. Schwartz, Sand Springs, Okla.; a sister, Helen L. Conwell, Kokomo; grandson, Neal Andrew "Andy" Boone, Columbus. He was preceded in death by his parents and four sisters.
Services are 10 a.m. Monday at Ellers Mortuary, Main Street Chapel, 725 S. Main St. The Rev. Harold Williams will officiate. Entombment will be in Sunset Memory Garden with military rites. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

John H. Coughlin, 83, 1018 N. Wabash St., died at 1:35 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999, at Saint Joseph Hospital and Health Center.

Zula Burton
Zula J. Burton, 78, Kokomo, died at 3:10 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, at Howard Community Hospital. Born Feb. 2, 1921, in Monticello, Ky., she was the daughter of James and Laura (Brown) Patrick. On Nov. 12, 1937, she married
Elmo Burton, who died April 15, 1988.
She had worked for Continental Steel and was a homemaker. She was a member of the Morning Star Church.
Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce and John Summers, Cutler; Barbara and Mark Arehart, Kokomo; son and daughter-in-law, Ralph and Dixie Burton, Cicero; five grandchildren, Jeff B. Summers, Cutler; Joel E. Summers and Angela Wallace, Lafayette; Robert Burton, Houston, Texas; Rick Burton, Cincinnati, Ohio; five great-grandchildren, Jennifer Burton, Houston, Texas; Tori and Madi Wallace and Jamie and Michael Summers, Lafayette. She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers, and two sisters.

Barbara Lauderbaugh
Barbara Lauderbaugh, 71, 1116 Brentwood, died at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, at her residence. Born Feb. 5, 1928, in Center, she was the daughter of Wayne and Ruth Ellabarger. On May 3, 1947, in Center, she married
Nat Lauderbaugh, who survives.
She had worked for Hooks Drug Store and Union Prescription Center. She was also a homemaker. She was a member of Northview Christian Church.
Surviving are her husband; two sons and a daughter-in-law, David and Judy Lauderbaugh and Thomas Lauderbaugh, all of Kokomo; a daughter, Leeanne Lauderbaugh, Kokomo; six grandchildren, Nikki Lauderbaugh, Nathan Lauderbaugh, Jennifer Myers, Aaron Lauderbaugh, Kira Lauderbaugh, Jason Blackwell, all of Kokomo; a great-grandchild, Kynzie Lauderbaugh, Kokomo; two brothers, Lowell "Bud" Ellabarger and Carl "Ed" Ellabarger, Kokomo.

Arthur Jarrett
Arthur Jarrett, 91, 815 W. State St., died 3:15 p.m. Friday, Nov. 5, 1999, at his residence. He was born Sept. 29, 1908, in Poughkeepsie, Ark., the son of James and Rittia (Vance) Jarrett. He was the husband to Lena (Smith) Jarrett, who survives in Kokomo. They were married
Dec. 24, 1931 in Poughkeepsie.
He was a farmer and was employed at Delco Electronics for 18 years before retiring in 1974. He was a member of the Courtland Avenue Church of Christ and the AF of L Union. He was a loving and devoted husband to Lena for over 67 years. He was a loving father, grandfather, and friend to all that knew him.
Also surviving are two sons and one daughter-in-law, Roscoe Jarrett, Greentown, and Monroe and Peggy Jarrett, Kokomo; three daughters and three sons-in-law, Veda and Dwight Amos, Arcadia, Verena and Jim Gragg, Kokomo, and Oleta and Earl Campbell, Kokomo; two sisters, Ozella Mobley, Cave City, Ark. and Ruth Bettis, Batesville, Ark., 10 grandchildren, Joanie Kitts, Mike Campbell, Tony Jarrett, Tim Campbell, Mark Jarrett, Lisa Bilby, Dana Harvey, Karla Amos, Kelly Amos and Debbie Root; 16 great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Three brothers, five sisters and his parents preceded him in death.
Services are 10 a.m. today at Sunset Memory Garden Funeral Home, 2097 W. Alto Road, with Randy Blackaby officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memory Garden cemetery. Friends called 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Willie Perry
Willie Ray Perry, 50, 1321 Meadowbrook Drive, died approximately 5:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 5, 1999, in Howard Community Hospital. He was born March 22, 1949, in Cincinnati to Hurstel and Evelene (Foster) Perry.
He was a 1967 graduate of Kokomo High School. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Conflict. He was employed at Chrysler for 29 years and was a member of the Eagles Lodge and United Auto Workers Local 1166.
Surviving are his parents of Kokomo; one daughter and son-in-law, Renee and Jason Burger, Greentown; one brother, Gary Perry, Kokomo; one sister and brother-in-law, Tammy and Robert Railsback, Tipton; two grandsons, Jacob and Jarett Burger; one niece and two nephews.
Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at Sunset Memory Garden Funeral Home, 2097 W. Alto Road. Chaplain Michael Morecraft will officiate. Entombment will be at a later date at the Sunset Memory Garden cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
