Betty Chambers
Betty J. Chambers, 79, Russiaville, died at 4:50 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 3, 1999, at Wesley Manor Health Care Center, Frankfort. Born Jan. 16, 1920, in Russiaville, she was the daughter of Russell and Lula (Michael) Rinehart. On Aug. 13, 1939, she married
Robert E. Chambers, who preceded her in death Feb. 20, 1984.
She graduated from Russiaville High School in 1939. She lived all her life in Russiaville. She was a member of Russiaville United Methodist Church and Russiaville Order of Eastern Star #130. She was also a member of the Tourist Club. She was a homemaker and loved collecting antique dishes.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Robert E. and Colleen Chambers Jr., Sedalia; a daughter, Delilah Wilson, Birmingham, Ala.; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Allie Mae Rinehart, Russiaville; five grandchildren, Tracey Hewitt, Tammy Sunderman, Becky Baker, Bill Wilson, and Casey Wilson; and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Stout & Son Funeral Home, 200 E. Main St., Russiaville. Rev. Dick Girton will officiate. Burial will be in Russiaville cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Russiaville Ambulance Service. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
Dale Noble
Dale C. Noble, 86, 825 N. Meridian, Greentown, died at 4:24 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 3, 1999 Saint Joseph Hospital. Born in Madison County July 7, 1913, he was the son of J.E. and Myra (Hiatt) Noble. On Aug. 18, 1935, he married
Beulah Roberts, who preceded him in death on Oct. 26, 1996.
He graduated from Elwood High School in 1931 and attended DePauw University. He then joined the Army where he served with Century Division’s 397th Infantry. He was awarded a Bronze Star medal for his action in combat prior to V-E Day. The award recognized the part he played in the division’s fighting through France and Germany. Driving through the Vosges Mountains they cracked the Germans’ planned defenses at the Meurthe River and took the elaborately-fortified town of Bitche on the Miginot Line. He became an honorary citizen of the town of Bitche. On Dec. 2, 1944, Pfc. Noble was reported missing. Later word was that he was wounded. He returned to his outfit on Dec. 10, 1944, and was later awarded the Purple Heart.
He was a member of Meridian Street Christian Church and attended the Jerome Christian Church. He was a 50 year member of Elwood Masonic Lodge #71, a 50 year member of Indianapolis Valley Scottish Rite, 50 year member of O.E.S. #195, and a 53 year member of Greentown Lions Club. He retired in 1978 from Fisher Body, Marion, in the Tool and Die crib.
Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Robert T. (Wally) Cox, Greentown; a sister-in-law, Joan Noble, Plainfield; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Arthur and Ruth Roberts, Chesterton; three grandchildren and two spouses, Jeffrey Vincent; Robin and Brian Vincent; Mike and Jennifer Cox; three great-grandchildren, Tyler and Abby Vincent and Gaven Cox; and three nieces and six nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife; one great-grandchild, Kaitlyn Breann Vincent; three brothers, Arthur, Earl and Don Noble; and one sister, Alice Noble.
Services at 10 a.m. Saturday at Hasler-Pickett Funeral Home, 112 E. Main St., Greentown. The Rev. Barry Thornton will officiate. Burial will be at Knox Chapel cemetery, with military services by Veterans of Foreign Wars #1152. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. The Elwood Masonic Lodge will conduct memorial services at 8 p.m. Friday. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Robert Martin
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Robert C, Martin, 73, formerly of Peru, died Tuesday, Aug. 3, 1999, at his home. Born Aug. 1, 1926, in Peru, he was the son of Charles Martin and Mabel (Wedder) Martin.
He was a graduate of Peru High School, and attended Butler University in Indianapolis, and Ball State University in Muncie. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He was president of the Special Risk Division for Higham, Neilson, Whitridge, and Reid Insurance Company, which later became Interstate National Corporation. A member of the Presbyterian Church, he also served as president of Youth at Risk, and was proud that he had received his private pilot’s license.
Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Beth K. Martin; a daughter, Stephanie M. Bjork, Lake Forest, Ill.; a son, Lance C. Martin, Mundelein, Ill.; three grandchildren, Sean Bjork, Boston, Mass.; Jeffrey and Briana Martin, both of Mundelein, Ill.; a sister, Mary Jane Jefferson, Huntington, Ind.; a niece, Marcia Jennings, Crystal Lake, Ill.; and a nephew, Charles Askren, Tulsa, Okla.
There will be a memorial service in Peru at a later date. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Hospice at Charlotte, 1420 E. Seventh St., Charlotte, N.C. 28204, of Presbyterian Home Care, 217 Travis Avenue, Charlotte, 28204. Harry and Bryant Company is serving the family of Mr. Martin.
E. Willis
PHOENIX, Ariz. -- E. Ivalu Willis, 84, formerly of Kokomo, died July 30, 1999, in Phoenix. She was born April 6, 1915, in Montezuma, Ind. She lived, graduated, married
and owned a grocery with her husband, Tom Willis, in Kokomo. They moved to Phoenix in 1956.
She was a member of Beta Lamba Chapter of Tri Kappa Sorority, Soroptimist, Clipper Club, and Historic First Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are a nephew, Mike Greene, Phoenix; and two nieces, Jane Ann Meyer and Linda Rayl, both of Kokomo. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tom, on Dec. 21, 1986, and six siblings.
Memorial services are at 11 a.m. Friday at Historic First Presbyterian Church, Norton Chapel. Hansen Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements.
Satra Pyke
BUNKER HILL, Ind. -- Satra D. Pyke, 86, 183 N. Elm St., died at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 4, 1999, at Saint Joseph Hospital & Health Center. Born Jan. 13, 1913, in Goin, Tenn., she was the daughter of General Sherman Williams and Linda (Hopper) Williams, both who have preceded her in death. She was married
to Ralph Pyke, who passed away in 1969.
She was a homemaker and a member of Amana Missionary Baptist Church for over 30 years.
Surviving are a daughter-in-law, Oralee Summers Lytle, Bunker Hill; two granddaughters, Robin Burton and Donna Ahrens, both of Bunker Hill; two grandsons, Ed Summers, Peru; Greg Summers, Bunker Hill; two brothers, Foister and Ottis Williams, both of Philadelphia, Tenn.; and a sister, Doskey Williams, Bunker Hill. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a son, Dwane Summers, and five brothers.
Services are 1 p.m. Saturday at Allen Funeral Home. Pastor Ron Cook will officiate. Burial will be in Albright cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
Willa ‘Billie’ McDaniel
TIPTON, Ind. -- Willa Mae "Billie" McDaniel, 77, 459 Mill St., died at 7:22 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 4, 1999, at Tipton County Memorial Hospital. Born May 29, 1922, in Searcy, Ark., she was the daughter of John and Sara (Thompson) Mangrum. In 1948, she married
Peck McDaniel, who preceded her in death Jan. 29, 1994.
She was a wife and homemaker. She was a past member of the Moose Lodge and the American Legion, both in Tipton.
Surviving are a daughter, Shirlie Wood, Noblesville; a son, Ronnie McDaniel, Tipton; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and three sons, Randy McDaniel, Richard and Bill Barrett.
Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at Porter Funeral Home, 726 E. North St. Pastor Harvey Herring will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Norman Padfield
Norman F. Padfield, 60, 303 Redwood Drive, died at 1:40 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 5, 1999, at Indiana University Medical Center, following an illness with leukemia. Born March 14, 1939, in Kokomo, he was the son of Clarence Robert and Amanda Elizabeth (Hosier) Padfield. On Nov. 20, 1960, in Richmond, he married
Barbara Jean (Bargerhuff), who survives.
He was a 1957 graduate of Western High School. He retired in June, 1999, from General Motors Delco Delphi, where he worked as a pipefitter. In previous years, he owned Padfield’s Barber Shop in Richmond, and he worked in real estate in Kokomo. He was a member of Chapel Hill Christian Church, where he previously served as deacon and taught Sunday school and vacation Bible school. He loved Jesus and enjoyed attending church. He enjoyed playing with his grandchildren and watching them swim and play ball. He enjoyed golf, I.U. basketball, and was a longtime Cincinnati Reds fan.
Surviving are his wife of Kokomo; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael Robert and Leanne Padfield, Greentown; two daughters and sons-in-law, Michelle Kay and Randall Morris and Melissa Ann and Rick Deeter, all of Kokomo; five grandchildren, Amanda Morris, Matthew Deeter, Megan Morris, Darrick Deeter, and Mitch Padfield; and six brothers. He was preceded in death by two brothers and a grandson, Christopher Padfield.
He was also preceded in death by his parents.
Services will be 4 p.m. today at Sunset Memory Garden Funeral Home, 2097 W. Alto Road. Stephen W. Allen will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Memory Gardens cemetery. Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. today before the service at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Chapel Hill Preschool Scholarship Fund.
John Holbrook
TIPTON, Ind. -- John Raymond Holbrook, 78, 236 N. Conde St., Tipton, died at 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 5, 1999, at Carmel Care Center, Carmel, Ind. Born Oct. 7, 1920, in Rushville, Ind., he was the son of Raymond and Beulah (Meredith) Holbrook; both preceded him in death.
On March 2, 1951, he married
Amy E. Foster, who preceded him in death on May 15, 1989.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a retired registered pharmacist at Blue Front Drug Store and Marsh Drugs, and a former sanitarian for Tipton County Health Department. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Tipton, Tipton Elks Lodge, Tipton County Historical Society, Murat Temple, Scottish Rite, Austin Masonic Lodge, Tipton County Shrine Club and Disabled American Veterans.
Surviving are one son, John F. "Jay" Holbrook, Tipton; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kathi R. and James T. Heard, Tipton, and Shannon L. and Terry Tubbs, Kempton, Ind.; five grandchildren, Jeremy Holbrook, Shauna and Dustan Heard and Terry and Nicole Tubbs.
He was preceded in death by a son, Jeffery L. Holbrook.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Young-Nichols Funeral Home, 216 W. Jefferson St. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery, with military services conducted by Tipton American Legion. Friends may call from 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Ruth Jordan Cancer Fund.
Ervin Miller
ELKHART, Ind. -- Ervin O. Miller, 66, 29861 Cleveland Ave., Elkhart, died at 11:45 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 5, 1999, at his home. Born Sept. 17, 1932, in Amboy, Ind., he was the son of Anna (Yoder) Miller, Kokomo and the late Oba J. Miller. On June 1, 1951, he married
Florence Helmuth in Nappanee, Ind.
He moved to this area in 1959 from Amboy, Ind. He was a farmer and a truck driver. He was a member of the Nappanee Missionary Church, Newmar Country Club and Good Sam Club.
Surviving are his wife, Florence; his mother, Anna Yoder; one daughter and son-in-law, Anna and Ken Beachy, Nappanee; two sons, Lavone Miller and Ervin Eugene Miller, both of New Paris, Ind.; three brothers, Menno Miller and Clarence Miller, Kokomo and William Miller, Nappanee; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Mattie and Floyd Beachy, Kalona, Iowa, Lydia and Ernest Beachy, Kokomo, Erma and Ray Nissley, Goshen and Elsie and Don Horner, Kokomo; and nine grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, one brother, Dan Miller and one sister, Ada Miller.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Nappanee Missionary Church. The Rev. Marvin Engbrecht of Nappanee Missionary Church will officiate and Rev. Josh Quarandillo of Southside Missionary Church will assist him. Burial will be in Violet cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today and from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday and one prior to services Monday at Thompson-Lengacher and Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee Chapel.

Richard Maple
Richard L. Maple, 76, R.R. 9, Kokomo, died at 7 a.m. Aug. 4, 1999, at Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis. Born Sept. 12, 1922, in Howard County, he was the son of Dorey L. Maple and Martha J. Smith, who both preceded him in death. On July 20, 1946, he married
Betty Lou (Hunnicutt) Maple, who survives.
He was a life resident of the area. He graduated from Jackson Township Schools, Howard County, and took short courses at Purdue University. He was a farmer, a member of Converse Church of Christ, and of Rainbow Christian Camp, where he was chairman for 25 years, a Charter Board member of Purdue Campus House, former member of Farm Bureau Co-op, Miami-Cass County RMC board member, a former Elder and Deacon of Converse Church of Christ, and he was serving as a trustee of the church. He loved woodworking and antiques.
Surviving are his wife, Betty Lou; one daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Jim Moseley, Clarks Hill, Ind.; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Steve and Donna Maple, Jerel and Connie Maple, all of Kokomo, Denny and Rita Maple, Greentown, and Evan Maple, Kokomo; one brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Jeannie Maple, Worthington, Ohio; one sister and brother-in-law, Susie and Bill Middlesworth, Greentown; 16 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Converse Church of Christ, Converse, Ind. The Revs. Robert L. Miller, Rob Grandi and Larry Brandon will officiate. Burial will be in the Converse cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Converse Church of Christ, 301 East Wabash St., Converse.

Ellen Kirby
Ellen Maxine Kirby, 78, Ocala, Fla., died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 1999 in Ocala. Born Jan. 20, 1921, in Howard County, she was the daughter of Ross and Lucille (Mason) Rinehart. On Oct. 26, 1946, she married
Lilburn "John" Stull, who preceded her in death on July 9, 1958. On May 2, 1964, she married
Joseph Kirby, who survives.
Prior to moving to Ocala in 1984, Maxine lived in Chicago Ill.
Surviving are her husband, Joe; five sons and four daughters-in-law, Phil and Gigi Stull, Joe and Cindy Stull, Randy and Sheila Stull, Mike Stull, all of Chicago, and John and Rachel Stull of Tyrone, Ga.; 13 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Mason Rinehart, Ed and Jo Ann Rinehart, Bud and Emma Lou Rinehart; one sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and Carl Prifogle, all of Kokomo; nine nieces; three nephews; 15 grandnieces; 14 grandnephews; two great-grandnieces; and two great-grandnephews.
Preceding her in death were her first husband, her parents, two sisters, Nina and Marilyn Rinehart, and one grandson, Joey Stull.
Services will be Monday at Ocala West United Methodist Church in Ocala. Hiers - Baxley Funeral Services, Ocala, is in charge of arrangements.
Elsie Young
Elsie L. Young, 80, Kokomo, died at approximately noon Thursday, Aug. 5, 1999 at her residence. Arrangements are pending at Ellers Mortuary.
Rodrick Caudill
NAPPANEE, Ind. - Rodrick Anthony Caudill, 42, 7984 N. Road 625 West, Nappanee, died 11:10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 6, 1999, at his residence, following an extended illness. He was born Jan. 28, 1957, in Plymouth, to James Monroe and Darlene LaDora (Harkins) Caudill.
He was the husband of Laura Romano, who survives. They were married
July 21, 1986. He lived in Nappanee area for five and half years after moving from Culver. He owned and operated Just Plain Barbering in Nappanee.
Surviving are his wife, one daughter, Gianni; and one son, Amos, both at home; two stepdaughters, Sarah Titus, California, and Abigale Oertel, Indianapolis; one stepson, John Mark Oertel, Indianapolis; two stepgrandchildren; his father, James (Jack) Caudill and his companion, Cindy Patterson, both of Culver; his mother, Darlene Cole, Kokomo; two sisters, Tamara Womack and Tonnia Pier, both of Culver; and one brother, Gregory Lee, Culver.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Eastland Funeral Home, Mishler Chapel, Milford. Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. in Culver Masonic cemetery. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Sunday until services at the chapel.
Orvilla Cook
Orvilla M. Cook, 73, 1036 S. Indiana Ave., died at 6:35 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 5, 1999, in SCCI Hospital. She was born July 18, 1926, in Kokomo, the daughter of Robert and Ruth Gaddis. She was the wife of Robert C. Cook, who preceded her in death Oct. 13, 1992. They were married
June 18, 1955, in Kokomo.
She was a homemaker.
Surviving are four sons, Ronnie and Sherry Patton, Kokomo, Floyd and Barb Patton, Georgetown, Ky., Clint and Tonya Cook and Doug and Gayla Cook, all of Kokomo; one daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Dick Anderson, Burlington; 24 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one brother, Jim Gaddis, Tennessee; and one sister, Wanda Thieke, Massillon, Ohio.
Her husband and eight brothers and sisters preceded her in death.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Sunset Memory Garden Funeral Home, 2097 W. Alto Road. The Rev. John McCoy of Southside Christian Church will officiate. Entombment will be in Sunset Memory Gardens cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
