Richard S. VanSickle
June 15, 1927 - March 1, 2005
Richard Scott VanSickle, 77, Anderson, died March 1, 2005, at Community Hospital Anderson after an extended illness.
He was born June 15, 1927, in Anderson, and lived in this area all of his life. He retired as a senior method’s process engineer from Delco Remy Division of General Motors after 40 years of service.
He was a longtime member of the Anderson North Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. He was a loving husband for 56 years and a caring father. Richard enjoyed life, outdoor sports, hunting, fishing and gardening.
He is survived by his wife, whom he married
Feb. 19, 1949, Edith A. (Templeton) VanSickle; four children, Richard A. and wife Joddie VanSickle of Noblesville, Elaine A. VanSickle of Anderson, Timothy S. and wife Pamela VanSickle of Anderson, and Clifford W. VanSickle of Anderson; grandchildren, Nathaniel S. and wife Michele VanSickle of New Jersey, Angela R. VanSickle of Noblesville, Nicholas S. Jackson of Texas, Neale W. VanSickle of Anderson, Sarah A. VanSickle of Frankton, Caitlin M. VanSickle of Anderson, and Jessica R. VanSickle of Frankton; five great-grandchildren, Natania, Sierra, Tayler, Tyler and Jalen.
He will be sadly missed by several dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Orville Scott and Martha Ann (Rhodus) VanSickle; a daughter, Edith Marie VanSickle; and brothers, Robert VanSickle and Joseph VanSickle.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Anderson North Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 3110 E. Cross St., with Elder William Houser officiating. Cremation will take place.
Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the church.

Orby E. Redmond
Oct. 10, 1931 - Feb. 25, 2005
Orby Eugene “Gene” Redmond, 73, Anderson, died Feb. 25, 2005, at ManorCare Healthcare after an extended illness.
He was a tree trimmer for Redmond’s Tree Service for 40 years. He served in the U.S. Army.
Survivors include a daughter, Debbie Redmond; a son, Michael Redmond; brother, Virldeen (Lois) Redmond; a niece and a nephew; a great-nephew and two great-nieces.
There will be no services or visitation. Cremation will take place.
Arrangements are being handled by Rozelle-Johnson Funeral Service.

GREENFIELD — Former Anderson and Chesterfield resident Robert I. Denney, 85, of Greenfield, died March 2, 2005, at the Indiana Heart Hospital. Arrangements are pending at Seals Funeral Home, Fortville.

Harry W. McKowen, 93, Alexandria, died March 1, 2005, at Community Hospital after a brief illness. Arrangements are pending at Owens Funeral Home in Alexandria.
Mary G. Sharpe
Nov. 7, 1923 - March 1, 2005
Mary G. Sharpe, 81, former Anderson resident, died March 1, 2005, at Rawlins House Convalescent Center in Pendleton after an extended illness.
She was born Nov. 7, 1923, in Fedora, S.D., the daughter of Robert and Zanza Hoffman Petteys. She retired from Tri County Golf Course in Middletown after 17 years of service.
She moved from Anderson to Middletown in 1955 and moved back to Anderson in 1990.
She was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Anderson and a member of the Altar and Rosary societies. She belonged to the Mother Seton Widows Group and the RSVP of Madison County.
Survivors are one son, Robert (Mandy) Sharpe of Anderson; a daughter, Anna Sharpe of Indianapolis; three grandchildren, Lindsey, Benjamin and Kimberly Sharpe of Anderson; a brother, George Pettys of Hemet, Calif., and a sister, Emma Burghardt of Howard, S.D.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Sharpe, in 1987; a brother; and four sisters.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Anderson with the Rev. Edward Dhondt officiating. Burial will follow in Mechanicsburg cemetery in Middletown.
Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Ballard and Sons Funeral Home, 118 S. Fifth St., Middletown.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Middletown EMS or the St. Ambrose Catholic Church.

Thomas F. Searchfield
April 26, 1936 - March 1, 2005
Thomas F. Searchfield, 68, Anderson, died March 1, 2005, at Williamsburg Village in Muncie.
Survivors include sister, Lois Federation; two brothers, Gary Searchfield and Charles Searchfield.
Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Dunnichay Funeral Home, Elwood, with the Rev. Matthew Miller officiating. Burial will be in Elwood City cemetery.
Visitation will be one hour before service Friday at the funeral home.
J. Robert Phillips
July 16, 1925 - Feb. 28, 2005
J. Robert Phillips, 79, Anderson, passed away Feb. 28, 2005, at his residence after an extended illness.
“Scrappy,” as he was known, was born July 16, 1925, in Anderson, the son of James Franklin and Elsie (Snyder) Phillips. He graduated from Anderson High School in 1943 and graduated from Indiana University in 1949. He was a lifetime resident of Anderson.
He started working in the family business at a very young age. His father established Phillips Coal Co. in 1931 in Anderson. After college, “Scrappy” ran the family business known as Phillips Iron and Coal, which later became the present, Phillips Industries.
He served on the board of United Way, served as president of the board of Wilson Boys Club and past president of the Anderson Country Club in 1980. He served in World War II as a lieutenant in the Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1945 as navigator on a B-17 bomber.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marie K. (Groves) Phillips, whom he married
Feb. 1, 1948; daughters, Dr. Sharon Kay (Phillips) Andreoli (husband, Dr. H. William) Harris of Zionsville and Jo Ellen (husband, Barry) Cope of Anderson; son, Jay Robert (wife, Carol Crow) Phillips of Anderson; seven grandchildren, Jennifer Lynn Andreoli and Eric Michael Andreoli, both of Zionsville,
Kelly (fiancé, Jim Sinclair) Cope, Jaime Cope, Joshua Robert (fiancee, Julie Doi) Phillips, Laura Lee Phillips and Jacob Paul Phillips, all of Anderson; sisters, Mary Moore of Pendleton and Barbara Phillips of Anderson; sister-in-law, Lois Phillips; brother-in-law, Walter Weissenberger; several nieces and nephews; and special friends.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Kathleen Dawson, Betty Baker and Pat Mahan; and brothers, James Phillips Jr., Jack Phillips and Jerry Phillips.
Services will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Brown-Butz-Diedring Funeral Home with Dr. Paul Crow officiating. Entombment will be in East Maplewood cemetery.
Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Madison County Relay for Life or United Faith Housing.
Clarence E. Tharp
RICHMOND — Former Alexandria resident Clarence E. “Red” Tharp, 93, Richmond, died March 1, 2005, at Countryside Place Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Mishawaka, after an extended illness. Arrangements are pending at Owens Funeral Home, Alexandria.
Martha J. Davis
Oct. 26, 1934 - Feb. 28, 2005
ORESTES — Martha Jean (Lankford) Davis, 70, Orestes, died Feb. 28, 2005, at Community Hospital Anderson after an extended illness.
She was born Oct. 26, 1934, in Trousdale County, Tenn., the daughter of Albert Thomas and Celia Taylor Lankford, and resided in Orestes for most of her lifetime.
Martha Jean has worked for Red Gold in Orestes. She enjoyed going to garage sales, working crossword puzzles, sewing and cooking for her family, especially her grandchildren.
Survivors include a son, William Kevin Davis of Orestes; two daughters, Jessie Marie (Richard) Fite of Orestes and Shelia (Jamie) Williams of Alexandria; two sisters, Thelma Thomas of Alexandria and Orvilia “Margie” Martinie of Goodlettsville, Tenn.; four grandchildren, Misty (Matt) Dyer, Leigha Fite, Ashley Williams and Jeffery Williams; three great-grandchildren, Jesse Logan Clark, Victoria “Tori” Fite and Andrew “Drew” Dyer; friend of the family, Scott Clark; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 45 years, Jesse Davis, on Feb. 26, 2002; three sisters, Bea Farley, Sallie Huffines and Nina Purvis; and a brother, Ford Lankford.
Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday at Owens Funeral Home, 412 N. Harrison St., Alexandria, with the Rev. Clifton Richardson, pastor of First Baptist Church, Alexandria, officiating. Burial will be in IOOF cemetery in Alexandria.
Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Diabetes Association through the funeral home.
Orvy E. Redmond

Dr. Jack W. Lennington
YORKTOWN — Dr. Jack W. Lennington, 79, Yorktown, passed away Feb. 28, 2005, at Williamsburg Village.
He was born in Detroit, Mich., and moved with his family to Muncie in 1928. He attended Muncie public schools and graduated from Muncie Central High in 1943. He served three years in U.S. Coast Guard in World War II and was discharged as a pharmacist mate first class. He attended Ball State University one year and transferred to Butler University College of Pharmacy and graduated in 1950.
He was a member of Butler University Scholastic fraternity. He worked as a pharmaceutical representative for six years. He attended the Kansas City College of Osteopathy and Surgery and graduated in 1962, then served an internship at Normandy Hospital in St. Louis, Mo. He practiced general medicine in St. Louis for two years and then moved with his family to Anderson in 1964 and practiced general medicine until his retirement in December 1993. While in Kansas City Medical School he was elected to the Rho Sigma Chi Honor Society; Sigma Sigma Phi National Honor Society; and the Psi Sigma Alpha National Honor Society.
He is survived by daughter, Kathryn Cue of Gilbert, Ariz.; son, Michael (wife, Brenda) Lennington of Ovilla, Texas; and two grandchildren, Scott and Ryan.
His wife, Carolyn S. Lennington, died in January 1993.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday in the chapel of The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory. Entombment will follow in the Elm Ridge cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday or one hour before service Friday at the mortuary.
