Marvin A. Scantland
Marvin A. Scantland, "The Gum Man," 88, of Muncie and Anderson, died Feb. 15, 2004, at St. John's Medical Center in Anderson following an extended illness.
He was born in Helena, Ark., the son of Frank C. and Della Jane Caty Scantland, attended Anderson High School, served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, moved to Muncie in 1954, and back to Anderson in 1999.
Mr. Scantland was a salesman for various businesses in Muncie and Anderson.
Mr. Scantland was a member of the AMVETS, 40& 8, and Vermillion Christian Church in Alexandria. He also was active in the Humane Society and had previously been a precinct committeeman in Muncie.
Surviving are two daughters, Sharon Basiewicz (husband, Tony) of Anderson and Ruth Waddle of Yorktown; his son, Mark Scantland (wife, Karen), Muncie; nine grandchildren, Lisa Lloyd of Winchester, Michael Spence (wife, Teresa) of Anderson, Christopher Spence of Anderson, Jonathan Wisner (wife, Melanie) of Anderson, Rob Waddle (wife, Amanda) of Trafalgar, Matt Waddle, Michael, Christy, and Bryan Scantland, all of Muncie; four stepgrandchildren, George Basiewicz, Tim Basiewicz, Debra Pearce and Linda Waddle; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Elizabeth Scantland.
Services will be held in The Meeks Mortuary Chapel at 1:30 p.m. Thursday. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory cemetery with military rites by Veterans of Delaware County.
Friends may call at the mortuary from 4 until 8 p.m. on Wednesday or one hour prior to services on Thursday.
Memorials may be directed to the Humane Society.
LeRoy Brizendine
Aug. 15, 1920 -- Feb. 16, 2004
MARKLEVILLE -- LeRoy Brizendine, 83, of Markleville, died Feb. 16, 2004, at his residence after an extended illness.
He was born Aug. 15, 1920, in Hancock County and resided in this area all of his life.
He was retired from Delco Remy in 1980 after 39 years of service. He served his country in the U.S. Army as a sergeant in the South Pacific conflict from 1943-1946.
He enjoyed gardening and fishing. He was a member of United Auto Workers Local 662. He enjoyed all ball games.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Dema (Michael) Brizendine; sons, Michael and wife Lissette Brizendine of Orlando, Fla., and Patrick Brizendine of San Diego, Calif.; brothers, Howard Brizendine of Florida and Raymond and wife Jane of Greenfield; sisters, Betty and husband Barney Stine of Fountaintown, Glendora and husband Roger Beyers of Greenfield and Lola Spegal of Shirley; grandchildren, Jeffrey and wife Lorilee Brizendine of Orlando, Fla., and Scott Brizendine of Tampa, Fla.; great-granddaughters, Kasey and Kara Brizendine of Orlando, Fla.; several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. Also special caregivers, Diane Keffer, Linda Henderson, Barbara Perry, Vickie Carlton and Southern Care Hospice.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Eva (Stohler) Brizendine; and sister, Hazel McCord.
Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Robert D. Loose Funeral Homes & Crematory, South Chapel, with the Revs. Doug Shook and Jim Kraft officiating. Burial will be in Mendon cemetery at Pendleton. Military rites will be by the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Myrtle Franklin
Dec. 12, 1921 -- Feb. 15, 2004
Myrtle A. "Myrtie" Franklin, 82, of Anderson, died Feb. 15, 2004, at St. John's Medical Center. She was born Dec. 12, 1921, in Albany, Ky.
She lived most of her life in the Anderson area. In 1979 she retired from Delco Remy after 33 years.
She is survived by her husband, Kirby Franklin of Chesterfield; two brothers, Frank (wife, Eleanor) Abston of Albany, Ky., and John (wife, Nell) Abston of New Castle; several nieces and nephews; and special friend, Pam Rockwell of Muncie.
She was preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters.
Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Brown-Butz-Diedring Funeral Home with the Rev. Marvin Baker officiating. Burial will be in Anderson Memorial Park cemetery.
Visitation will be two hours prior to the service at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to American Heart Association or American Diabetes Foundation.
Milburn Weller
Nov. 4, 1918 -- Feb. 14, 2004
MARION -- Milburn "Rex" Weller, 85, of Marion, formerly of Fort Wayne, died Feb. 14, 2004, at Marion General Hospital after an extended illness.
He was born in Roann, Ind., to the late William Richard "Dick" and Ida (Hoppes) Weller. He attended school in Marion. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1945 when he was discharged due to an illness in the family.
He retired after working more than 30 years from the Pennsylvania Railroad. He was a member of the Fort Wayne American Legion Post 82.
Survivors include his daughters, Jacqueline (Larry) Sears of Pittsboro, Peggy (Morris) Bailey of Summitville, Deborah (Bill) Henchon of Marion and Sue (George) Willingham of Fort Wayne; sons, Richard (Deanna) Weller of Bourbonnais, Ill., and David (Bernadette) Weller of Fort Wayne; 19 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Dorothy Wanda Weller; a son, Thomas Michael Weller; and a great-grandson, Scott Shipley.
Services will be 11:30 a.m. today at the Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave., Marion, with the Revs. Ronnie Sears and Don Reed officiating.
Burial will be in Estates of Serenity in Marion.
Roy H. Dickens
Dec. 22, 1925 -- Feb. 5, 2004
KERRVILLE, Texas -- Roy H. Dickens, 78, of Kerrville, died Feb. 5, 2004, at his residence. He was a former Anderson and Elwood resident.
Roy was a repair machinist for GMC. He was in the United States Marine Corps and fought in World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Guadalupe Dickens; daughter, Janie Jaime Carrillo and husband Thomas Carrillo; son, Erasmo Jaime; son, Roy "Buddy"; four grandchildren; brother, Ken "Dewey"; and sister, Geneva.
In Indiana he is survived by three children, Steve, Cathy and Alicia; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Fort Sam Houston National cemetery in San Antonio officiated by Deacon Charles Domingues.

Dorothy M. (Martin) Bell, 82, of Anderson, died Feb. 14, 2004, at her residence following an extended illness.
She was born Jan. 15, 1922, in Adairville, Ky., and had been an Anderson resident since 1949.
She was a homemaker and a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
From 1941 to 1947, she was employed by L.S. Ayres Department Store in downtown Indianapolis.
She was a member of Southdale Church of the Nazarene. She enjoyed reading, working crossword puzzles and keeping her family safe.
Survivors include her husband, Noel E. "Sam" Bell, of Anderson, whom she married
April 5, 1947; four children, Ronald L. Zander and wife Nancy, Larry R. Mathis and wife Brenda, Barbara L. Shell and friend Ron Fisher, and Timothy A. Bell and wife Bonni; seven grandchildren, Amanda S. Ogburn, Abby L. Rhodes, Jessica D. Bell, Lisa Z. Pohl, Kris Zander, Tim Wilson and Lisa McLaughlin; 12 great-grandchildren, Jacob B. Rhodes, Joshua S. Rhodes, Rachel Anna Odell Rhodes, Nicole Kosowan, Danielle Kosowan, Megan Wilson, Riley Wilson, Samantha Morris, Arianna Daniels, Mariah Pohl, Ryan Pohl and Julia Pohl; and a cousin, Geraldine Butler.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John Harold and Hettye (Poole) Martin; and a sister, Elizabeth Cornelia Martin.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Rozelle-Johnson Funeral Service, 229 S. Rangeline Road, Anderson, officiated by the Rev. Randy James. Entombment will take place at East Maplewood cemetery.

Dennis L. McDole

Dennis L. "Tub" McDole, 60, of Anderson, died Feb. 14, 2004, at his residence.
He was born Aug. 17, 1943, in Anderson.
On May 2, 1987, he married
Geneva Burchett.
He was a veteran who served his country in the U S. Army.
He retired from Owens Brockway Glass and was currently employed by Bridgestone/Firestone of Noblesville.
He was a member of United Steel Workers of America and was an avid drag racing fan. He loved being with his children and grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Geneva (Burchett) McDole of Anderson; five sons, Tanner Goodman McDole and Larry (wife, Rhonda) Goodman, all of Anderson, Richard Goodman of Alexandria, Todd Goodman of Noblesville and Waylon McDole of Florida; four daughters, Angela Goodman of Chattanooga, Tenn., Shannon (husband, Jay) Southerland of Anderson, Jeanette (husband, Joe) Eason of Westfield and Caydi McDole of Alexandria; his mother, Mary McDole of Lapel; six brothers, Ted McDole of Lapel, Troy McDole of Anderson, Rod McDole and Freddie McDole, both of Lapel, Lawrence "Cracker" McDole of Pennsylvania and Donald McDole of Anderson; three sisters, Treva Evans of Lapel, Cathy Flatford of Tennessee and Jane Ann McDole of Lapel; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Harper & Dunnichay Funeral Home, 305 Sigler St., Frankton, officiated by the Rev. Jerry Snyder. Burial will take place at K of P-IOOF cemetery, Frankton, where military graveside rites will be conducted by the Frankton American Legion.
Visitation hours are from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Eugene C. White
Nov. 18, 1928 -- Feb. 14, 2004
NEW CASTLE -- Eugene C. White, 75, died Feb. 14, 2004, at his residence, after a brief illness.
He was born Nov. 18, 1928, in Freedom, Ind., the son of Marion and Mary (Phelps) White. For 12 years, he resided in Okeechobee, Fla., and returned to Indiana in 2002.
He graduated in 1946 from Freedom High School.
He was a member of First Baptist Church in New Castle and of Middletown Masonic Lodge 271.
In 1982, he retired from Delco Remy in Anderson after 30 years of employment.
He loved fishing and woodworking, and was an avid baseball fan.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Betty I. (Noel) White of New Castle; two daughters, Jan (husband, Dale) Starks and Sonnie (husband, Jerry) Lamberson, all of New Castle; three grandchildren, Courtney Jennings of Indianapolis, Megan (husband, Ryan) Jackson of New Castle and Ross Lamberson of West Lafayette; and two stepsisters, Shelby Lambert of Mooresville and Judy Sparks of Plainfield.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Marion and Mary (Phelps) White, and two brothers.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service, officiated by the Revs. Dan Yeager and Jack Hannum. Burial will follow at South Mound cemetery, West Lawn addition.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made, through the funeral home, to the First Baptist Church Family Life Center.
