Ernest J. DeFord

Ernest J. DeFord, 91, Anderson, died Feb. 18, 2004, at St. John's Medical Center.
He was born Aug. 30, 1912, in Anderson, the son of Elmer and Lucy (McDuffy) DeFord, and lived in Anderson all of his life. In 1981, he retired from Guide Lamp after 46 years of employment.
He was a life member of Elks Lodge 209, and was a member of Solar Masonic Lodge 734, Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis, Murat Shrine Temple, Madison County Shrine Club, and UAW-CIO Local 663.
He is survived by his wife, Helena H. DeFord of Anderson, whom he married
Nov. 23, 1939; two sons, Jay (wife, Patricia) DeFord and Jan (wife, Deena) DeFord, all of Anderson; five grandchildren, Debra Dowling, Donna (husband, Matt) Taylor, Lori (husband, Max) Murrell, Deonn (wife, Allison) DeFord and Chantel (husband, Gill) DeFord-Gomez; nine great-grandchildren, Breanna Fritz, Brandy Fritz, Bethany Fritz, Zach Taylor, Austin Taylor, Elliott Taylor, Blake Murrell, Jordan Murrell, Drea DeFord; one great-great grandchild, Mason; three sisters, Annabelle Ashcraft of California, and Violet Matthews and Agnes Ramsey, both of Anderson.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Josephine Rinker and Margaret Spangler.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Brown-Butz-Diedring Funeral Home with the Rev. James Storey officiating. Entombment will be in Anderson Memorial Park cemetery.
Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. A Masonic memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m. by Solar Lodge.
Martha E. Padgett
Sept. 29, 1911 -- Feb. 19, 2004
Martha E. Padgett, 92, Anderson, died Feb. 19, 2004, at Countryside Manor Nursing Home.
She was born Sept. 29, 1911, in Greene County, the daughter of William Jackson and Alice Taylor. She was a homemaker.
She was a member of Koleen United Methodist Church, Koleen Ladies Aid and the Quilting Club.
Survivors include a daughter, Marcella Padgett of Bloomington; three granddaughters, Sondra E. Whitton of Carmel, Sharlene E. Padgett of Anderson and Suzette E. Brown of Middletown; three grandsons, Leonard W. Padgett of Anderson, Lloyd W. Padgett of Cumberland and Larry W. Padgett of Norman; seven great-granddaughters, Suzanne Whitton and Stephanie Whitton, both of Carmel, Shantelle Brown, Sarah Brown and Sierra Brown, all of Middletown, Samantha Padgett and Sabrina Padgett, both of Cumberland; and a great-grandson, Lance Padgett of Anderson.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Aubrey Padgett, in 1981; a son, Wendell Padgett, in 1996; a sister, Mary Jackson, in 1947; and two brothers, Silas Jackson in 1977 and Daniel Jackson in 2002.
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Koleen United Methodist Church, rural Bloomfield, with the Revs. Lloyd Swango and Deborah Reichenbach officiating. Burial will be in Walnut Grove cemetery.
Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Jenkins & Sons Funeral Home, Bloomfield, and one hour before services Sunday at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Koleen United Methodist Church.
Richard J. Seippel
March 25, 1919 -- Feb. 18, 2004
Richard James "Rich" Seippel, 84, Anderson, died Feb. 18, 2004, at Community Hospital after an extended illness.
He was born March 25, 1919, in Pittsburgh, Pa., and lived in Anderson for many years. He also resided for several years in Wyoming. He worked for Sinclair Oil in Casper, Wyo.
He served in the U.S. Army, 507th Parachute Infantry. He enjoyed golfing and making fishing flies.
Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Virginia "Louise" Seippel of Anderson; three children, Valjean Beers, Vivian Schwimmer and Kenneth Seippel, all of Pennsylvania; two stepchildren, David Wayne Garretson of Guam and Danny Lee Garretson of Anderson; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Gertrude Reichard of Pennsylvania; and two brothers, William and Robert Seippel, both of Arizona.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Lester and John Seippel; brother-in-law, Jack Reichard; and parents, John and Gertrude (Myers) Seippel.
Services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Rozelle-Johnson Funeral Service with Richard True officiating. Burial will be in Anderson Memorial Park cemetery.
Visitation will be 4 to 6 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Madison County Humane Society.
Robert E. Thompson
RADCLIFF, Ky. -- Former Anderson resident Robert E. Thompson, 86, Radcliff, died Feb. 18, 2004, at his residence.
He was a retired General Motors employee and a former employee of SKF/Rolling Bearing Industries. He was a veteran of World War II.
Survivors include seven sons, Burl Allen Thompson, Dale S. Thompson, Paul E. Thompson of Anderson, James Thompson, Jerry Thompson, David L. Thompson of Anderson and Stephen Thompson; half brother, Harlen Thompson; 28 grandchildren; and 51 great-grandchildren.
His wife, Elsie Irene Thompson, preceded him in death.
Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Nelson-Edelen-Bennett Funeral Home, Radcliff, with Chaplain Peggy Holthaus officiating. Burial will be in North Hardin Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today and one hour before service Saturday at the funeral home.

ELWOOD -- Ruth Williams, 81, Elwood, died Feb. 19, 2004, at St. Vincent Mercy Hospital.

Jesse Jennings
Sept. 17, 1933 -- Feb. 17, 2004
Jesse Jennings, 70, passed away Feb. 17, 2004, at ManorCare Health Services after an extended illness.
He was born Sept. 17, 1933, in Meridian, Miss., and attended Bethel Baptist Church in Meridian, Miss. Jesse had been a resident of Anderson since 1959. He served in the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1957.
He leaves to cherish his memories a son, Tony Jordan; mother, Rachel Stewart Jennings; daughter, Lisa Jennings; grandchildren, Ta'Marius J. Redd, Jazmor Jennings, Ta'Myia Jennings, Ja'Kishy Jennings, T'Andre' Jesse Jennings; sisters, Cornelia J. Warren, Geneva J. Walker, all of Anderson; special cousins, John Naylor, Murphy Naylor, Pauline Williams; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Zema Jennings; and a niece, Marilyn Y. Warren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at L.C. May Funeral Services Inc., 2024 Madison Ave., with Pastor Vionte Traylor officiating. Burial will be in East Maplewood cemetery.
Visitation will be two hours before services Saturday at the funeral home.
Samuel J. Willis
Feb. 25, 1930 -- Feb. 8, 2004
PHOENIX, Ariz. -- Former Shirley resident Samuel J. Willis, 73, died Feb. 8, 2004, after an extended illness.
He was born Feb. 25, 1930, in Shirley, the son of Lester and Gladys (Thompson) Willis. He was retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1976 and resided in the Phoenix area the past few years.
He is survived by his wife, Francis Willis of Phoenix; sons, Sam (wife, Joyce) Willis and Steve Willis and companion, Nancy; a daughter, Sandy Willis, all of Tucson, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; a great-grandchild; seven brothers and three sisters, Bob of Anderson, Joe and Roy Dale of Markleville, Jerry of Huber Heights, Ohio, Denzil of Wilkinson, David of Palm Coast, Fla., Jerome of Greenfield, Ruth Loar, Eleanor Rumler and Laura Willis of Indianapolis.
He graduated from Wilkinson High School in 1948 and entered the Air Force shortly after.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Cremation and military graveside services were at Cave Creek Military cemetery, a National Memorial cemetery of Arizona in Phoenix, on Feb. 17, 2004.
A memorial service is planned by his brothers and sisters at Shirley Shelter House on Saturday, May 22, at 2 p.m. Friends of the family are invited.
Local arrangements are being handled by Condo & Son Funeral Home, Wilkinson.
Mary F. Marley
May 26, 1922 -- Feb. 17, 2004
SUMMITVILLE -- Mary F. (Street) Lloyd Marley, 81, Summitville, died Feb. 17, 2004, at Community Hospital in Anderson.
She was born May 26, 1922, in Marion, the daughter of Chester Wayne and M. Opal (Odle) Street. She married
Richard Lloyd on Sept. 26, 1942, and he preceded her in death. She married
Jacob Marley and he died in 1998.
She retired from the selection department at the former Owens-Illinois, Gas City. She attended Community Chapel Church of Fairmount. She was a very giving and generous person. She loved to crochet and do word searches.
Survivors include two sons, Richard (Teresa) Lloyd and David (Karen) Lloyd, all of Summitville; daughter, Lou Ann (Danny) Garza of Summitville; a sister, Betty Logan of Gas City; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, and a daughter, Margaret Switzer.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Forrestville cemetery in Summitville with the Rev. Joe Shaver officiating.
Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, Storey Chapel, 400 E. Main St., Gas City.

Robert B. Kidwell
Nov. 27, 1919 -- Feb. 17, 2004
ELWOOD -- Robert B. Kidwell, 84, Elwood, died Feb. 17, 2004, at Dickey Nursing Home in Elwood after an extended illness.
He was born Nov. 27, 1919, in Hammond. He was the head carpenter at the Children's Museum in Indianapolis for nine years, retiring in 1986. He was also a self-employed carpenter.
He attended the First Missionary Baptist Church in Elwood and also formerly attended the Church of God in Muncie. He was a member of the Indianapolis Carpenter's Union. He was in the Navy Seabees from 1943 to 1946 during World War II. He enjoyed reading the Bible and talking about the Lord.
Survivors include his wife, Thelma (Crull) Kidwell of Elwood, whom he married
Aug. 1, 1980; son, Bobby (wife, Camilla) Kidwell of Anderson; stepson, Danny (wife, Kathryn) Price of Elwood; sister, Lucille Murdock of Anderson; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bealie and Mary Kidwell; son, Herbert Kidwell; first wife, Faye (Crull) Kidwell; and a sister, Ilene Fowler.
Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home, Elwood, with Dr. John Dawson of the First Missionary Baptist Church of Elwood officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Anderson Memorial Park cemetery.
Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Russell Michael
FOUNTAIN, Colo. -- Former Anderson resident Russell "Rusty" Michael passed away on Dec. 16, 2003, at the age of 48.
Having attended Anderson schools, he was a devoted family man and U.S. Army veteran. Serving as judge advocate for the American Legion Post 38 and commander for Post 38 and department junior vice for the American Legion of Colorado. He also served as coordinator for Boys State, junior speech and oratorical competitions and loved to volunteer as Santa's helper "Snickers" for the past five years.
Survived by his wife, Linda; children Duane and Stephanie; grandson, Tristan; granddaughter, Trinity; sister, Pam Michael of Noblesville; aunt, Beverly Alexander of Anderson; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and his beloved miniature Schnauzers.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Farrell and Ruth Michael of Anderson.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion Post 38 Children's Youth Fund.
Donald L. Thurber
Feb. 16, 1924 -- Feb. 18, 2004
SUMMITVILLE -- Donald L. Thurber, 80, Summitville, died Feb. 18, 2004, at his residence.
He was born Feb. 16, 1924, in Delaware County, the son of Fred and Cecil Thurber. He had been a resident of Indiana, Michigan, Colorado and Tennessee, returning to Summitville in 2002.
He was a 1942 graduate of Summitville High School and attended Toledo University. He was employed by Johns-Manville in payroll and a controller in Alexandria, Toledo, Ohio, and Littleton, Colo. He retired in 1982 following 36 years of service.
He and his wife loved to travel and were members of the Colorado Pine Travel Club. They drove their motor home and visited 48 states. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and was a qualified craftsman in woodwork. He planted trees in every community that they lived in.
He was a member of the First Christian Church, Summitville.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Wilda Ruth (Bogue) Thurber, whom he married
March 1, 1946; daughter, Cheryl Lynn Thurber-Giles of Detroit, Mich.; son, Stephen Fred Thurber of Summitville; sister, Helen (William) Frazier of Anderson; grandchildren, Noel Lee Thurber, Stephanie Neese, Dream Hampton and Malachi Hampton; nine great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Wayne Huffman of Anderson; and sisters-in-law, Joyce Carmony and Winifred Patterson, both of Summitville.
He was preceded in death by parents; brother, Dale Wayne Thurber; and sister, Martha Jean Huffman.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Christian Church, 712 E. Walnut St., Summitville, with the Rev. Nathan Lutterman officiating. Burial will be in Forrestville cemetery, Summitville.
Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Owens-Noffze Funeral Home, 1009 W. Walnut St., Summitville, and one hour prior to service at the church.
