Bertha E. Tom
Bertha E. Tom, 83, Milford, died Saturday in Lakeland Rehabilitation Center. Among survivors are a daughter; five sons, including Larry Tom, rural Decatur; and a brother.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in North Webster Church of the Brethren, North Webster, with burial in Salem cemetery, Wilmot. Visiting hours are 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday in Eastlund-Harris Funeral Home, Syracuse.

Dennis Rowles
Dennis Rowles, 41, Portland, died Sunday in Jay County Hospital, Portland. Among survivors are the mother; two sons; four brothers; two sisters, Carolyn Bush, Decatur, and Tina Gierhart, Bryant; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Baird-Freeman Funeral Home, Portland, with burial in Center cemetery, Portland. Visiting hours are 4-8 p.m. Tuesday.

Sherman L. Stucky
Sherman L. Stucky, 85, Berne, a longtime civic leader in that city, died at 4:31 p.m. Thursday in Adams County Memorial Hospital of an aortic aneurysm. He had been ill the past four months.
He was born on April 23, 1912 in Berne to Walter and Ada Lehman Stucky. He married
Rebecca Reusser on May 29, 1929; she survives.
He retired in 1969 after 38 years as a postal clerk and rural mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. He was a charter member of the Berne Lions Club in 1953 and a former president of that group. He also helped organize the Berne Little League in the 1950s and was the organizer of the Berne Bear Club, of which he was president for 15 years.
In the late 1920s, Mr. Stucky was a member of the Dunbar Band and was well known for playing a long Alpine horn on stage while wearing traditional Swiss clothes during Berne's annual Swiss Days celebrations. He also played the Alpine horn at state events.
He was a member of First Mennonite Church in Berne and was a former president of its Mennonite Choral Society.
Mr. Stucky and his wife also hosted many Swiss ancestral tours for 19 years. He was also a Boy Scout district commissioner and leader in the Berne area for many years.
Other survivors are two sons, Steven P. Stucky, Lafayette, and Sydney R. Stucky, Fountaintown, Indiana; a brother, Horace D. Stucky, Decatur; two sisters, Naomi Liechty, Berne, and Edith Musser, Bluffton; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and one great-graat-grandchild.
A son, Dr. Jerry Stucky, is deceased.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in First Mennonite Church, with burial in MRE cemetery, Berne. Visiting hours are 2-8:30 p.m. Saturday in Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home, Berne, and 1:30-3 p.m. Sunday in the church.
Preferred memorials are to the organ fund at First Mennonite Church.

Charles C. Johnson
Charles C. Johnson, 48, 109 Berkshire Dr., died at 4:44 a.m. Friday in Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.
He was born on January 8, 1949 in Cheverly, Maryland, to Raymond and Helen M. Ward Johnson, who live in Decatur. He married
Jeanne Hoevel on August 6, 1971; she also survives.
He retired in March, 1994 after a 26-year career with General Electric Co. and was a member of the Adams County Coin Club, the Knights of Columbus and the United Electrical, Radio, and Machine Workers Union. He also was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Decatur and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
Other survivors are two sons, Chad M. Johnson, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and Cory Johnson, Decatur; a daughter, Jennifer D. Johnson, Decatur; two half-brothers; a sister, Mrs. Calvin (Linda) Springer, Decatur; four half-sisters, including Mrs. Rodney (Teresa) Simon, Decatur; four stepgrandchildren; and a stepgreat-grandchild.
There will be a prayer service at 9:30 a.m. Monday in Haggard and Armes Funeral Home, Decatur, followed by a funeral mass at 10 a.m. in St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, with burial in St. Joseph Catholic cemetery, Decatur. Miliary graveside rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 43.
Visiting hours are 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday. There will be a wake service at 7:45 p.m. Sunday.

Crist K. Hilty
Crist K. Hilty, 67, rural Berne, died unexpectedly at 1:30 p.m. Friday in Adams County Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Adams County on July 18, 1929 to John and Katie Coblentz Hilty. He married
Clara Schwartz on September 27, 1953.
He was employed at Schwartz Manufacturing and was a member of the Old Order Amish. Mr. Hilty was also a retired farmer and had served as a minister for 30 years.
He is survived by his wife; four daughters, Mrs. Melvin (Marie) Shetler, Berne; Mrs. Ben (Loretta) Schwartz, Monroe; Mrs. Ben E.L. (Carolyn) Schwartz, Berne; Mrs. Roman E.L. (Marlene) Schwartz, Monroe; four sons, Lamar Hilty, Monroe; Mervin C. Hilty, Berne; Leon C. Hilty, Berne; Merlin C. Hilty, Monroe; nine sisters, Anna Wickey, Berne; Mrs. Menno (Rebecca) Eicher, Centerville, Mo.; Mrs. Sam Y. (Mary) Schwartz, Seymour, Mo.; Mrs. Val (Sylvia) Shetler, Berne; Mrs. Andy (Sovilla) Shetler, Monroe; Ada Shetler, Kalona, Iowa; Mrs. Ernest D. (Kathryn) Schwartz, Monroe; Mrs. Raymond B. (Maggie) Schwartz, Berne; Mrs. William H. (Susie) Schwartz, Quaker City, Ohio; five brothers, Jake K. Hilty, Berne; Joe K. Hilty, Monroe; Henry K. Hilty, Geneva; Elmer K. Hilty, Geneva; John K. Hilty, Geneva; and 31 grandchildren.
Funeral services are at 9 a.m. Monday at the Hilty residence. Burial will take place in Schwartz cemetery. Visiting hours are 1-9 p.m. today and 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Sunday at the residence.

Douglas A. Sipe
Douglas A. Sipe, 36, Berne, died at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne, following an extended illness.
He was born June 25, 1961, in Adams County to Donald L. and Coretta Chamness Sipe. He married
Connie Beetler on May 22, 1982 in Galesburg, Ill. His parents and wife survive.
A graduate of Indiana University, he served as director of finance with Smith Bros. of Berne. A member of First Missionary Church, he was a former church board member and church treasurer and was a board member of Berne Junior Achievement.
Also surviving are two children, Nathan Allen Sipe and Eric Douglas Sipe, both at home; two sisters, Brenda Sipe, Rockford, Michigan, and Mrs. Matt (Beth) Miller, Berne; and a brother, Kenneth W. Sipe, Fort Wayne.
Funeral services are 11 a.m. Monday at First Missionary Church; burial will follow in Spring Hill (Backesto) cemetery. Visiting hours are 1:30 p.m.-9 p.m. Sunday at Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home. Memorials are to Word of Life Ministeries and First Missionary Church Youth Ministry Center Building.

Josephine G. Schwartz
Josephine G. Schwartz, 62, rural Berne, died at approximately 1 p.m. Friday in her residence after being fatally injured in a house fire.
She was born October 14, 1934 in Adams County to Joseph E. and Elizabeth S. Girod Eicher. She married
Noah M. Schwartz on October 10, 1957; he survives. Mrs. Schwartz was a homemaker and a member of the Old Order Amish.
Other survivors include five sons, Noah J.E. Schwartz, Decatur; Joseph J.E. Schwartz, Berne; Jacob J.E. Schwartz, Berne; Neal J.E. Schwartz, Willshire, Ohio; Jerome J.E. Schwartz, Monroe; three daughters, Mrs. Dave B. (Susanna N.) Schwartz, Monroe; Mrs. David M. (Laura N.) Wickey, Monroe; Mrs. Levi M. (Betty N.) Miller, Decatur; four brothers, Joseph J. Eicher, Geneva; Jacob J. Eicher, Berne; Sam J. Eicher, Berne; Ben J. Eicher, Berne; six sisters, Mrs. Henry M. (Elizabeth G.) Schwartz, Berne; Mrs. Joe D.J. (Margaret) Schwartz, Berne; Mrs. Sam E. (Frances) Brandenberger, New Haven; Mrs. Ruben N. (Mary) Schwartz, Monroe; Mrs. Pete L. (Naomi) Neuenschwander, Geneva; Mrs. Raymond N. (Emma) Schwartz, Geneva; and 41 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three daughters, Rose K., Ruth K. and Mary K. Schwartz, and a sister, Ann G. Schwartz.
Funeral services are at 9 a.m. Monday in the Jacob J.E. Schwartz residence, 5121 S. 600 E., Berne. Burial will take place in Blue Creek Amish cemetery in rural Berne. Visiting hours are after 3 p.m. Saturday in the Schwartz residence.

Ruth H. Hoverman
Ruth H. Hoverman, 94, Convoy, Ohio, a native of Decatur, died Monday in Convoy Care Center. Among survivors are a son, a brother, and a sister.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday (Ohio time) in Brickner Funeral Home, Van Wert, Ohio, with burial in Woodland cemetery, Van Wert. Visiting hours are 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday (Ohio time).

Edith Krauss
Edith Krauss, 100, New Haven, died at 7:50 p.m. Sunday in Harborside Healthcare, her residence the past two and one-half years.
She was born on May 8, 1897 in Fort Wayne to Fred and Emma Koeble Scheimann. She married
Otto Krauss on May 21,1925; he died on August 15, 1968.
She was a homemaker and a member of St. John Lutheran Church at Bingen and its Ladies Aid organization.
Surviving are three daughters, Helen Kuenneth, Satellite Beach, Florida; Mrs. Harold (Eileen) Wells, Phoenix, Arizona; and Mrs. Vernon (Mary L.) Werling, New Haven; four sons, Donald W. Krauss, Lansing, Michigan; Arthur Krauss, rural Hoagland; Rev. Edward L. Krauss, Ann Arbor, Michigan; and Kenneth E. Krauss, Troy, Michigan; 19 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Deceased are a daughter, Mildred Krauss; two sisters, Myrtle Brand and Della Koehlinger; two grandchildren; and five brothers, Otto, Lawrence, Edgar, Paul, and Carl Scheimann.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. John Lutheran Church, Bingen, with burial in the church cemetery. Visiting hours are 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday in Zwick-Sefton and Jahn Funeral Home, Decatur, and 10-11 a.m. Thursday in the church.

Lila G. Powelson
Lila G. Powelson, 76, rural Monroeville, died Monday in Parkview Memorial Hospital, Fort Wayne, after having been ill some six months,
Among survivors are two sons, Robert L. Powelson, Monroeville, and Charles W. "Bill" Powelson, rural Convoy, Ohio. Her husband, Louis R. Powelson, died in 1983.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Monroeville, with burial in Monroeville Memorial cemetery. Visiting hours are 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. Wednesday in Marquart and Jacobs Funeral Home, Monroeville.

Ann K. Sullivan
Ann K. Sullivan, 63, rural Decatur, died at 1:50 p.m. Monday at home.
She was born on May 10, 1934 in St. Louis, Missouri, to Victor and Margaret Boyd Roth. She married
Richard Sullivan on September 28, 1957. He is a well-known Decatur attorney and a former Adams County prosecutor.
She was formerly a registered nurse at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis and a life master in bridge. She was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Decatur.
Other survivors are a son, Rick Sullivan, Fort Wayne; three daughters, Susan Sullivan Vergara, Mrs. Terry (Kathy) Miller, and Mrs. Jeffrey (Judy) Agler, all of Decatur; a brother, Robert Roth, Littleton, Colorado; 12 grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
A son, Michael Sullivan, died on March 10 this year. A sister, Margaret Stoeffler, and a brother, William Tobin, are also deceased.
A prayer service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Thursday in Haggard and Armes Funeral Home, Decatur, followed by a funeral mass at 1 p.m. in St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic cemetery, Decatur. Visiting hours are 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday. There will be a scripture service at 8:45 p.m. Wednesday.
Preferred memorials are to the pulmonary rehabilitation program at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, St. Mary's Improvement Fund, or the American Lung Association.
