Florence Alverda Hale, 97
Florence “Flo” Alverda Hale, 97, formerly a resident of Geneva, died at 11:55 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, at Swiss Village Retirement Center at Berne.
Mrs. Hale worked as a clerk at the Filler Store and at Kroger and at the Food Bank groceries at Geneva.
She was a 70-year member of the High Street United Methodist Church at Geneva and its Women’s Society and a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star.
She was born at Geneva Sept. 20, 1904 to Warren and Savilla Meyers Striker. Her marriage on Nov. 14, 1927 was to William Silas Hale, who died Feb. 19, 1968.
Surviving are a son, William “Bill” of Poway, Calif.; a sister, Helen Johnson of Decatur; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Four brothers and a sister are deceased,
Services will be Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at Downing Funeral Home in Geneva, where visitation hours will be Thursday from 9:30 to 11 a.m.
Rev. John Randall will officiate and burial will be in West Lawn cemetery at Geneva.

Richard E. Smith, 70
Richard “Dick” E. Smith, 70, died at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at his residence in Elkhart after an extended illness.
Mr. Smith was the owner and operator of Reliable Courier Services Inc. in Elkhart and also owned the Smith Monument Company in Plymouth until he relocated in 1975. He was the designer of the Oak Hill Gardens Mausoleum at the Oak Hill cemetery at Plymouth.
A veteran of the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Bataan.
He was a life member of the Elks Lodge in Valparaiso, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1162 in Plymouth and American Legion Post 27.
He was born in Cass County Jan. 21, 1932 to Gerald F. and Ida Redd Smith. His marriage at Elkhart on June 6, 1975 was to Margaret “Marge” L. Newgent Swing, who survives.
Additional survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Ralph (Sherlyn S.) Wilson of Rome City and Mrs. William (Marla K.) McKnight of Elkhart; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Robert (Suzanne) Proctor of Loveland, Colo.; a stepson, Frederick Swing of Indianapolis; two brothers, Robert D. of Mishawaka and Merritt W. of Indianapolis; and three step-granddaughters.
There will be no visitation or services. Cremation is to take place.
The family will conduct a private graveside service at a future date at the Oak Hill Gardens Mausoleum in Plymouth.

Myrtle Reece, 95
Myrtle Reece, 95, who lived formerly at 118 Northwood Dr. in Bluffton, died at 12:20 a.m. today, Feb. 6, at Meadowvale Care & Rehabilitation, where she had resided since 1997.
Mrs. Reece was employed for 30 years in the credit and collections department of Caylor-Nickel Hospital, retiring in 1985.
She was graduated from Rock Creek High School in Huntington County and Fort Wayne Business College. She and her late husband lived several years on a farm in Liberty Township, Wells County.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and a former member of the United Methodist Church at Liberty Center.
She was born in Wabash County March 26, 1906, a daughter of Otis L. and Mary Mongel McLaughlin. Her marriage at Roanoke on March 6, 1936 was to Charles K. Reece, who died Nov. 18, 1968.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Paul (Nila Ann) Sell of Bluffton and Ms. Kahlia Walker of Liberty Center; two sisters, Mrs. Lester (Lucille) Edris of Christian Care Center and Mrs. Delbert (Betty) Gibson of Eaton; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Two sisters are deceased.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at Thoma/Rich, Hewitt & Chaney Funeral Home, where calling hours will be Saturday from 4 to 8 p.m. and Sunday for one hour prior to services.
Pastor William Shannon will officiate and burial will be in Spider Hill cemetery at Rockford.

Dorothy M. Marshall, 82
Dorothy M. Marshall, 82, a Wells County native, died at 11:55 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, at the United Methodist Memorial Home at Warren.
Mrs. Marshall formerly resided in rural Marion and was a homemaker.
She was born at Ossian Oct. 24, 1919, a daughter of Harman and Faye Kauffman Emley. Her marriage at Henderson, Ky., on Oct. 28, 1940 was to Dale Marshall, who died Dec. 22, 2983.
Surviving are two sons, Homer of Macon, Ga., and Kenny of Lagro; three daughters, Mrs. Clarence (Nancy) West of Denver, Ind., Mrs. Lynn (Bonnie) Walters of Delong and Mrs. H. Allen (Cindy) Bolin of Logansport; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. A sister, two brothers and a great-grandchild are deceased.
Services will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Ferguson Funeral Home in Van Buren with Rev. J. Wallace officiating. Burial will be in Clear Creek cemetery.
Visitation hours at the funeral home are today from 6 to 8 p.m.

Berniece L. (Crago) Runion, 88
Funeral services for Berniece L. (Crago) Runion, 88, of Huntington will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Myers Funeral Home Huntington Chapel.
Visitation hours at the funeral chapel will be Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
Mrs. Runion died at 9:50 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, at Parkview Huntington Hospital.
She had worked at Moon & Moon Laundry/Dry Cleaning for many years and in the laundry department of Huntington Memorial Hospital many more years. She was a member of the Good Shepherd United Brethren Church and the Grayston Avenue United Brethren Church for 50 years. She also taught Sunday school for many years.
She was born in Huntington May 24, 1913, a daughter of Samuel and Nellie Sprowl Bowman. Her first marriage at Huntington on Nov. 14, 1931 was to Fred Crago, who died Sept. 12, 1960; a second marriage on Aug. 13, 1967 at Huntington was to Cliffton Runion, who died June 22, 1999.
Surviving are two sons, Sam Crago and Fred Crago, both of Huntington; two daughters, Beverly Huntley of Tallahassee, Fla., and Nancy Bozwell of Portage, Mich.; four stepsons, Ed Runion of Markle, Harold Runion, Clifford Runion and Dave Runion, all of Huntington; two stepdaughters, Lucille Watson of Huntington and Susan Lindsey of North Webster; a sister, Esther Grider of Noblesville; 10 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; 19 step-grandchildren; 24 step-great-grandchildren; and six step-great-great-grandchildren.
A brother, a stepdaughter and her stepmother, Bessie Drabenstot, are deceased.
Rev. Richard Frederick will officiate at services and interment will be in Pilgrims Rest cemetery in Huntington.

Josie Williamson, 88
Funeral services for Wells County native Josie Williamson, 88, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Glancy Funeral Homes, H. Brown & Son Chapel, in Warren.
Visitation time will be Thursday for one hour prior to services.
Ms. Williamson died at 2:14 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, at Meadowvale Health & Rehabilitation in Bluffton.
She formerly resided at 319 West Miller St. in Bluffton and attended schools in Wells County. She was born Feb. 15, 1913 in Wells County to Alva and Grace May Slater Williamson.
Surviving are two brothers, Isaac Williamson of Nashville, Tenn., and Claude J. Williamson of Warren; two sisters, Levella Grogg and Fay Williamson, both of Bluffton; and several nieces and nephews.
Burial following services Thursday will be in Red Men cemetery at Warren.

Kristina Danielle Logan, 29
Kristina “Tina” Danielle Logan 29, stepsister of Theresa Weimer of Ossian, died Monday, Feb. 4, at her home in Fort Wayne.
She was a cashier at Crossroads Pantry, Penguin Point, and Coney Express.
In addition to the stepsister at Ossian, she is survived by two sons, Steven Thurber and Mayson Logan, both of Fort Wayne; her mother and stepfather, Stella and Larry Brown of Fort Wayne; her father and stepmother, Ronald and Lydia Logan of Fort Wayne; two sisters, Lisa Croft of Martin, Ky., and Rhonda Banks of Fort Wayne; four brothers, Kevin Logan and Jason Logan, both of Fort Wayne, Greg Logan of Kendallville and Eric Logan of Indianapolis; two stepbrothers, Scott Brown of Florida and Troy Brown of South Carolina; and her fiance, Kevin Smalley of Fort Wayne.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Elzey-Patterson-Rodak Home for Funerals, 6810 Old Trail Rd., Fort Wayne, with burial in Prairie Grove cemetery.
Visitation hours are today from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Martha S. Habegger, 96
Adams County native Martha S. Habegger, 96, died Wednesday, Feb. 6, at Swiss Village at Berne.
Mrs. Habegger was involved in the operation of Habegger Furniture in Berne. Her husband, Sylvan, died in 1980.
Surviving are a son, Warren “Barney” of Berne; two daughters, Arlene Sprunger of Berne and Erma Morgan of North Webster; two sisters, Bertha Miller and Helen Felber, both of Berne; 10 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Services at Swiss Village will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday and burial will be in MRE cemetery.
Calling hours at Yager-Kirchhoffer Funeral Home in Berne will be Friday from 3 to 8 p.m. and at Swiss Village Saturday for one hour prior to services.

Earl R. Lhamon Jr., 65
Father of Steven Lhamon of Bluffton, Earl R. Lhamon, Jr., 65, died at 5 p.m. Thursday, July 25 at his rural Warren residence.
Mr. Lhamon was retired from L. L. Fittings in Fort Wayne and he also had previously been employed by Tokheim. A 1955 graduate of Fairmount High School, he served with the U.S. Navy from 1957 to 1963. He was a member of the Van Buren American Legion Post 368.
He was born May 24, 1937 in Gas City to Earl Richard and Thelma E. Miles Lhamon.
In addition to the son in Bluffton, other survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Allen (Patricia) Moriarity of Montpelier and Edie Renee Lhamon in Michigan, and three other sons, Earl “Rick” and Kenneth Mac, both of Huntington and Neal of Kalamazoo, Mich. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren.
Services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Glancy Funeral Homes — H. Brown & Son Chapel in Warren, where calling will be Sunday from 12 noon to 4 p.m.
Rev. John Willis will officiate at services and burial will be in Riverside cemetery in Gas City. Van Buren American Legion Post 368 will conduct military graveside rites.
