John P. Wasmuth Sr., 86
John P. Wasmuth Sr., 86, of Huntington died at 1:05 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, at the Oak Brook Village Nursing Center, formerly the Community Care Center. Mr. Wasmuth worked for Kitchen Maid in Andrews and for Schact Rubber Co. in Huntington. He was a member of the Etna Avenue Wesleyan Church in Huntington.
He was born Aug. 20, 1915 at Huntington to Arthur and Hazel Wasmuth. His marriage on Feb. 23, 1947 was to Frances E. Stettler, who survives.
Additional survivors are a son, John P. Jr. of Fishers; two daughters, Joan Phillips and Mrs. Dennis Hohensee, both of Huntington; three brothers, Alan Wasmuth of Oxford, Ohio, William Wasmuth of Leawood, Kan., and David Wasmuth of Los Altos, Calif.; and a sister, Margaret Bradburn of Indianapolis. A brother is deceased. Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Etna Avenue Wesleyan Church with Pastor Al Soultz officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Hope cemetery. Visitation hours at the Myers Funeral Home Huntington Chapel will be Saturday form 3 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Hollis G. Melton, 93
Hollis G. Melton, 93, of Ossian died Thursday, Feb. 7, at Ossian Health & Rehabilitation Center.
Mr. Melton was employed for 25 years, retiring in 1973, at the Lincoln Life Insurance Co. in Fort Wayne. He was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in rural Ossian.
He was born in Spurlington, Ky., Oct. 10, 1908, a son of John and Vergie Newton Melton. His first wife, Edith Lyons, died in 1973; his second marriage at Ossian Nov. 29, 1973 was to Viola “Peggy” Graft, who survives.
Other survivors are a son, Vernon Melton of Hartford City; a daughter, Caroline Ann Hans of Columbia City; three stepdaughters, Luella Wilson of Ossian, Mary Lou Hay and Lou Ann Hensel, both of Fort Wayne; a brother, Robert Melton of Camp Bellsville, Ky.; 19 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. A daughter, Frances Colvin, is deceased.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in rural Ossian with Rev. William Brege officiating. Burial will be in the Lindenwood cemetery in Fort Wayne.
Visitation hours at Elzey-Patterson-Rodak Funeral Home, Ossian Chapel, will be Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m. and at the church Monday for one hour prior to services.
Memorials to the church’s building fund or to its Ladies Association.

Joseph F. Alexander, 73
Joseph F. Alexander, 73, of Celina, Ohio, a brother of Alice Barger of Bluffton, Ind., died at 1:45 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, of natural causes at the Celina Manor Nursing Home.
Mr. Alexander was retired from the maintenance department at the New Idea Co. in Coldwater, Ohio, after 33 years. He was born at St. Marys, Ohio, July 28, 1928, a son of Joseph F. and Lillie M. Place Alexander Sr.
In addition to the sister in Bluffton, he is survived by two other sisters, Mrs. John (Dorothy) Hoenie and Mrs. Louis (June) Goodwin, both of Celina, and a brother, Norman G. Alexander of Celina. A brother is deceased.
Services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Cisco Funeral Home in Celina with Rev. Richard VanHorn officiating. Burial will be in Swamp College cemetery at Celina. Visitation hours at the funeral home will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday.

John M. Hamilton, 75
John M. Hamilton, 75, of Las Vegas, Nev., a native of Wells County, died at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at Nathan Adelson Hospice in Las Vegas.
Mr. Hamilton worked in construction jobs most of his life.
He was born in Wells County Sept. 21, 1926 to James and Hazel Gregg Hamilton.
A sister, Martha Schmidt of Anderson, is the sole survivor. Two brothers, Benjamin L. and Joe, are deceased. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, at the Mossburg cemetery in Wells County.
Rev. Frank Rodgers will officiate. Arrangements are in charge of Glancy Funeral Homes, Walker Chapel, in Montpelier.

Chalmer V. Henschen, 95
Chalmer V. Henschen, 95, of Fort Wayne, father of Noel Henschen of rural Uniondale, died Thursday, Feb. 7, at Covington Manor in Fort Wayne.
Mr. Henschen retired in 1973 as a buyer for Schust Co. after 25 years.
He was a member of the Waynedale United Methodist Church and the Waynedale Men’s Association. He was born in Wells County Feb. 22, 1906. His wife, the former Edith Beatrice Kinerk, died Aug. 22, 1990.
Surviving, in addition to the son in rural Uniondale, are a daughter, Suzanne Dunlap of Fort Wayne; two other sons, Lynn and Jay Henschen, both of Fort Wayne; a brother, Virgil Henschen of Goshen; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. A sister and a grandson are deceased.
Services at 11 a.m. Saturday will be at Elzey-Patterson-Rodak Home for Funerals in Fort Wayne. Burial will be in Prairie Grove cemetery in Fort Wayne. Visitation hours at the funeral home are today from 4 to 9 p.m. and Saturday for one hour prior to services.

Robert R. Carpenter, 74
Robert R. Carpenter, 74, father of Walter R. Carpenter of Bluffton, died Wednesday, Feb. 6 at Parkview Hospital.
Retired from Zollner Corp. after 31 years, he was a native of Fort Wayne and served with the U.S. Army during World War II.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Covington Memorial Funeral Home, 8408 Covington Road, where calling will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Sunday. Burial will be in Covington Memorial Gardens. Preferred memorials to the American Heart Association.

Hermine F. Meyer, 86
Funeral services for Hermine F. Meyer, 86, a sister of Josie Flesch of Ossian, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Avilla.
Calling will be today from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Brazzell Funeral Home and for one hour prior to services. Mrs. Meyer died Wednesday, Feb. 6 at Sacred Heart Home in Avilla.

Shirley L. Haiflich, 58
Ill since last July, Shirley L. Haiflich, 58, of 418 North Mishawaka St, Akron, Ind., formerly of Roanoke, died at 6:35 a.m. Friday at her home.
She was born May 14, 1943, at Cadiz, Kentucky, to Wayne and Mildred Shane Newnam. The father is deceased. The mother survives at Fairbury, Illinois.
Mrs. Haiflich’s marriage was Dec. 31, 1992, to Rev. Stevan R. Haiflich, who survives.
She was a materials planner at Raytheon Systems in Fort Wayne.
She was a member of the Akron United Methodist Church, Rural Chaplain’s Association, for which she was secretary for one year, and the American Business Women’s Association (Kilsoquah Chapter).
Surviving, in addition to her husband and mother, are two stepsons, Philip Haiflich and Andrew Haiflich; three sisters, Mrs. Wade (Elaine) Nystrom of Altona, Illinois; Karilyn Newnam of Urbana, Illinois, and Mrs. David (Elsie) Casteel of Great Falls, Montana; one brother, Stan Newnam of Mount Vernon, Illinois, and two step-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Akron United Methodist Church, 121 North Mishawaka St., Akron, where services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday with Rev. Michael Harris officiating.
Burial will be in Mossburg cemetery, Wells County, near Liberty Center. Ind.
Hartzler Funeral Home at Akron is in charge of arrangements.

Robert William Cahoon Sr., 84
Robert William Cahoon Sr., 84, of Fillmore, died Thursday, Jan. 31, at Hendricks Community Hospital.
Born Jan. 3, 1918 in Marianna, Ark., he was a son of Charles and Mary Elizabeth Sandifer Cahoon, and his marriage on Oct. 8, 1945 was to Margaret Thomas, who survives.
Mr. Cahoon was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving during World War II. He retired from General Motors in 1972 as an electrical engineer. He was a member of the VFW Post 266.
Additional survivors include a son, Robert William Cahoon Jr. of Ossian, a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Elizabeth) Dunn of Fillmore, and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4 at the Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home, 602 East Washington St., in Greencastle, where friends may call Monday from 11 a.m. until time of services.

Velma E. Fulkerson, 84
Velma E. Fulkerson, 84, died at 7:15 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at Christian Care Center in Bluffton.
Mrs. Fulkerson was engaged as a seamstress and worked also at a waitress at the Hobby House and L.S. Ayres Tea Room.
She was a member of the Apostolic Christian Church.
She was born at Latte, Ohio, Aug. 7, 1917, a daughter of Tobias and Martha Baumgartner Steffen. Her marriage in Wells County on Oct. 24, 1940, was to Sylvester “Si” Fulkerson, who died Jan. 19, 1987.
Surviving are two sons, Terry L. of Fort Wayne and Ron R. of Bloomington; a daughter, Mrs. Warren (Kay E.) Rauhe of Okemos, Mich.; two brothers, Harry Steffen and Kenneth Steffen, both of Bluffton; three sisters, Mrs. Hilda Robinson of Lafayette, Mrs. Vernon (Mary Ann) Kaehr of Bluffton and Mrs. Lucille Borror of Fort Wayne; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Three brothers and a sister are deceased.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Bluffton North Apostolic Christian Church with ministers of the church officiating. Burial will be in the Apostolic Christian cemetery.
Visitation hours at Goodwin Memorial Chapel will be today from 6 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 1 to 8 p.m. and at the church Wednesday for one hour prior to services.

Darlene M. Werling, 90
Darlene M. Werling, 90, formerly of rural Decatur, died at 3:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at Woodcrest in Decatur.
A homemaker, Mrs.Werling also worked at Western Auto from Oct. 1968 to April 1975, when she retired. Prior to her marriage, she was employed at General Electric in Fort Wayne.
She was born in Allen County Oct. 9, 1911 to Jasper and Jennie Springer Redding. Her marriage at Preble on Oct. 10, 1931 was to Arthur W. Werling, who died Feb. 10, 1965.
Mrs. Werling was a founding member of St. Paul Lutheran Church at Preble and its Ladies Aid Society.
Surviving are a daughter, Brenda Werling of rural Decatur, and a sister, Glendola Barnett of Fort Wayne. Two sisters and three brothers are deceased.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church at Preble with Rev. Daniel Brege officiating. Burial will be in St. Pail Lutheran cemetery.
Visitation hours at Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home in Decatur will be Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. and at the church Wednesday for one hour prior to services.

Robert E. McFeely Sr., 75
Funeral services for Robert E. McFeely Sr., 75, of Hartford City, were held at 11 a.m. today at the Waters Funeral Home in Hartford City with burial following in Hartford City cemetery.
Mr. McFeely died unexpectedly at 10:45 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, in the emergency room of Blackford County Hospital in Hartford City.
Mr. McFeely retired about 10 years ago from management at the Overhead Door Corporation in Hartford City.
He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was an avid sports fan of Indiana University and coached Little League baseball in Hartford City from 1980 to 1982 and was a volunteer at the Dunkirk Head Start program for the past two years.
He was born in Hartford City Nov. 28, 1926, the son of Ira H. and Jeannette Emery McFeely Sr.
Surviving are a son, Robert E. Jr. of Dillon, S.C., six grandchildren, Aaron, Jonathan, Ryan, Todd and Kristie McFeely and Laura Garringer, and four great-grandchildren. Deceased are a son, Eddie, a brother, two sisters, and two siblings who died in infancy.
Bishop Larry Hunt officiated at the services.
