Douglas “Kip” Neil Beaty III, 35
The son of former Bluffton residents, Douglas “Kip” Neil Beaty III, age 35, of Markleville, died Monday, Sept. 6 at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis as the result of injuries sustained in an auto accident on Tuesday, Aug. 31 in Madison County.
Born Oct. 15, 1968 in Marion to Douglas Neil and Janice Uptgraft Beaty Jr, he had lived in the Anderson area all of his life and worked for Guide Corporation as a journeyman pipefitter.
A 1987 graduate of Highland High School, he had completed a 5-year apprentice program through Local 661 in Muncie. He attended Parkview Wesleyan Church and was a member of the UAW Local 663 and the Plumbers and Steamfitters Union Local 661.
In addition to the parents, who reside in Anderson, other survivors are his wife of 12 years, the former Tammy Gillespie, a daughter, Brittany, a sister, Mrs. Mark (Dawn) Russell of Carmel and his grandmother, Mary Uptgraft of Bluffton.
Other survivors include uncles and aunts Kevin and Sara Beaty, Rex and Billy May Kreigh, Jim and Denise Uptgraft, and Laura Chaney, all of Wells County, and Mike and Sheila Zimmerman of Brazil.
He was preceded in death by grandparents, Douglas Neil Sr. and Toddie Beaty and Weisell Uptgraft.
Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Robert D. Loose Funeral Homes & Crematory, South Chapel, 200 West 53rd St., Anderson. Rev. Paul N. Trent will officiate and burial will be in Grovelawn cemetery in Pendleton.
Calling hours at the funeral home are Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. Preferred memorials are to the Trust Fund for Brittany Beaty.

Mary Constance ‘Connie’ Bertsch, 84
Mary Constance “Connie” Bertsch, 84, of Christian Care Retirement Community in Bluffton died there at 11:20 p.m.Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2004.
Born Jan. 17, 1920, at Elgin, Illinois, she was the daughter of Martin C. and Florence Anderson Roefer. Her marriage was on July 2, 1939, at Elgin to Harry Bertsch, who preceded her in death on Feb. 21, 2003. She was a housewife and a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church in Sarasota, Florida.
Surviving are a son, Dr. Thomas M. Bertsch of Harrisonburg, Virginia, and one grandchild. She was an only child. In-laws are Sylvan Bertsch and Mrs. Howard (Goldie) Stettner, both of Bluffton, and LaVera Roberts of Punta Gorda, Florida.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m.Thursday at Goodwin Memorial Chapel, where services will be at 10:30 a.m.Friday, with Philip Stettner officiating. Burial will be in the Apostolic Christian cemetery. Memorials to Christian Care.

Marilyn Kozlowski, 70
The mother of Mrs. Charles (Martha Ann) Krumrine of Bluffton, Marilyn Kozlowski, 70, of Decatur, died at 1:43 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 5 at Hospice Home of Northeast Indiana.
Born April 8, 1934 in Decatur, to Herman and Martha Scheumann Kiefer, her marriage on Nov. 28, 1957 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Preble was to Joseph Kozlowski Jr., who died on Nov. 12, 2003.
A homemaker, she was formerly employed in the accounting department of Lincoln Life and Central Soya (Bunge). She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Preble, the church’s Ladies Aid, and was a 1952 graduate of Monmouth High School.
In addition to the daughter in Bluffton, also surviving is a son, Joseph H. Kozlowski of Decatur.
A family prayer service will be held at 9:20 a.m. Friday at Zwick and Jahn Funeral Home, Decatur, followed by a 10 a.m. funeral service at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Preble. Pastor Daniel Brege will officiate and burial will be in St. Paul Church cemetery.
Calling at the funeral home will be Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
Preferred memorials are to St. Paul Lutheran Church; Worship for Shut-ins; Lutheran Hour or the donor’s choice.

Colleen K. Haire-Thullner, 50
Coleene K. Haire-Thullner, 50, of Fort Wayne, died at 9:45 a.m. Monday, Sept. 6, at the Bluffton home of her sister, Tonia Stoppenhagen.
A homemaker, she also was a distributor for Nature’s Sunshine and operated Davidic Anointing. She was an active member of Broadway Christian Church in Fort Wayne.
Born June 25, 1954 in Decatur to Otto and Helen Barger Thieme, who survive, her marriage on March 30, 1996, was to Otto Thullner, who also survives.
Other survivors are a son, Christopher Alan McCombs of Fort Wayne; two daughters, Cassondra Haire and Mikaela Thullner, both of Fort Wayne; another sister, Tina Gaskill of Van Wert, Ohio, and four brothers, Rick, Phil and Bruce Thieme all of Decatur and Rodney Thieme of Crawfordsville, Fla. She was preceded in death by an infant son, Michael Patrick McCombs in 1975.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Broadway Christian Church in Fort Wayne with Rev. Dick Hostetler officiating and burial in Immanuel Lutheran cemetery. Calling Thursday at Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home in Decatur are from 2 to 5 and 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday.

Guy E. Kershner Sr., 90
A Wells County native, 1931 Chester Center High School graduate and a retired longtime postal worker, Guy E. Kershner, 90, of Lake Alfred, Florida, died at Noble Manor Care Facility in Troy, Alabama, Sunday, Sept. 5, 2004.
A resident of Montpelier for a period of years and retired from the Montpelier Post Office in 1975, he had moved from there to the Florida location.
He was an Army veteran of World War II and a former member of the Millard-Brown American Legion Post 156 at Montpelier. He also was a member of the Fort Wayne Scottish Rite, the Montpelier First United Methodist Church and the Montpelier Masonic Lodge.
Born Oct. 7, 1913, he was a son of Charles and Cora Bell Rains Kershner. His marriage was on Sept. 2, 1939, to Ghlee D.Walker, who preceded him in death on April 9, 1983.
Surviving are a son, Edward Kershner of Oviedo, Florida; a daughter, Mrs. Steve (Ghlea) Coleman of Troy, Alabama; a foster son, Marvin Larue of New Carlisle, Ind.; a half-sister, Gladys Terwillinger of Hartford City; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Glen and Gale E.Kershner.
Calling will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at Glancy Funeral Homes -Walker Chapel, Montpelier, where services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, with Pastor Damon Hayward officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery, Montpelier. Memorials to First United Methodist Church, Montpelier.

Elanora I. Brooks, 88
Sister-in-law of Eunice Brooks of Bluffton, Elanora I. Brooks, 88, Alexandria, died at Community Hospital in Anderson Tuesday, Sept. 7.
Additional survivors include her husband, Lee H. Brooks, four sons, Ron of Alexandria, Thomas of Muncie, and Kenneth and Fred of Baxter, Tenn.; a daughter, Rebecca Brooks of Muncie; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Two brothers, Herbert and James Lewis, preceded her in death.
Services at 1 p.m. Saturday will be at Owens Funeral Home, Alexandria, with Rev. Howard Fights officiating. Burial will follow at Union cemetery in Eaton.
Calling will begin at 11 a.m. prior to the services Saturday.

Alice Mae Marks, 84
A native of Liberty Center and an aunt of Mayor Ted Ellis, Alice Mae Marks, 84, died Monday afternoon, Sept. 6, at her home in Albany.
Born Sept. 28, 1919 in Liberty Center to Lola M. (Garrett) and Hiner H. Ellis, she graduated from Liberty Center High School with the class of 1937. She married
Charles W. Marks and moved to Albany in 1948. He survives.
She was retired from Ball State University where she was a bookkeeper at the Bracken Library. A member of the Albany United Methodist Church where she was a Guiding Light, she was also a member of the Albany Associate Chapter of Tri-Kappa Sorority and the Ball State University Sympathy Club.
Additional survivors include a son, Jeffrey, of Nashville, Tenn.; a daughter, Marilyn J. Marks of Albany; a sister, Flo L. Parr, Muncie; three grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and a sister-in-law in Bluffton, Mary Ellis.
A brother, Curtis “Pete” Ellis, and a sister, Clo L. Tate, preceded her in death.
Services at 1 p.m. Saturday will be held at Parson-Rust Funeral Home in Albany with Pastor Neil Butcher officiating. Burial will follow at Strong cemetery.
Calling Friday from 4-8 p.m. will be at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the Albany United Methodist Church Memorial Fund.

Frances Gilmer, 89
A resident of the Warren United Methodist Memorial Home, Frances Gilmer, 89, died at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 8, at the home.
Born in Huntington County March 25, 1915 to Tracy L. and Delia Walters Eikenberry, her marriage to Paul F. Gilmer took place Nov. 12, 1938 in Huntington County. He preceded her in death July 18, 1998.
A 1934 graduate of Warren High School, she was a member of the Plumtree Church of Christ, where she was active in the church Fellowship Club. She was also a homemaker and a member of the Huntington County Homemakers Club and Kountry Klub.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Ted (Barbara) Engle, Fort Wayne; a sister, Leola Smith, Huntington; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A son, Michael Gilmer; sisters Fern Engleman and Berniece Kimmer; and a grandchild preceded her in death.
Services at 10:30 a.m. Saturday will be at Glancy Funeral Home-H. Brown & Son Chapel with Pastor Charles Dye Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Lancaster cemetery in Huntington County.
Calling hours are 4-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the Plumtree United Church of Christ Building Fund.

Wayne Martin, 85
Wayne Martin, 85, Lima, Ohio, father of Bluffton residents W. Leon Martin and Sharon Couch, died at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 5, at Plus Health Care Center, Lima.
Additional survivors include a son Larry S. Martin of North Webster; 14 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
A daughter, Joyce Flater, preceded him in death. She died in an apartment fire in Bluffton in 1977.
Services were to be held at 2 p.m. today at Chiles & Sons-Laman Funeral Homes, Lewis Chapel, Lima. Calling was one hour prior to services.

Phoenix Kelly, Infant
Phoenix John Kelly was stillborn at 7:31 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 16 at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.
Survivors include the parents, Travis and Kristina M. Trimlett Kelly of rural Fort Wayne; a brother, Chase Hunter Kelly at home; grandparents, Steve and Joan Kelly of Bluffton, David and Tammy Trimlett of Cedar Lake, and Steve and Evelyn Asher of Fort Wayne; and great-grandparents, Doris Harris and Virginia Robison, both of Bluffton, Tom and Sandra Lesh of Lowell, and Harold and Linda Love of Fort Wayne.
A graveside service will be held Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at Fairview cemetery with Kim Yergler officiating. Calling hours are Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Thoma/Rich, Hewitt & Chaney Funeral Home in Bluffton. Preferred memorials to the family.

Louis “Sonny” Manns, 73
Tocsin area native Louis “Sonny” Manns, 73, died at an Arlington, Texas, hospital Sunday, Sept. 12.
Born Aug. 7, 1931, near Echo to Louis and Eula Arnold Manns, he was married
for 49 years to the former Janet Smith. She survives.
Mr. Manns grew up near Tocsin, was an Ossian High School graduate and a Korean War veteran.
He and his family moved to Arlington in 1981. He was retired from Verizon Communications and was a deacon at the Fielder Road Baptist Church.
Additional survivors include three sons, Gary of Arlington, Kent and Steve, both of Mansfield, Texas; a daughter, Becky Brattvet, of Denton, Texas; two sisters, Betty Ann Barkley of rural Ossian and Ruth Wickliffe of Tocsin; and eight grandchildren.
Serices were Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. with burial at Arlington, Texas.
Memorials may be made to Gideons International or Fielder Road Baptist Church.
