Violet Miller, 84
Violet R. Miller, 84, of Vera Cruz, died at 11:20 a.m. Sunday, June 20 at the Adams County Memorial Hospital in Decatur.
Born in Wells County on Nov. 5, 1919 to Jacob and Florence Jones Howdyshell, she married
Irvin J. Miller in Wells County on May 20, 1936; he died Nov. 28, 1979.
Mrs. Miller worked at CTS in Berne for over 20 years, was a member at Park United Brethren Church and was a volunteer for Head Start.
She is survived by one son, Jerry L. Miller of Vera Cruz; two daughters, Mrs. Richard (Janet Kay) Holsinger and Mrs. James (Patricia) Foss, both of Bluffton; two sisters, Betty Mohler and Joan Eubank, both of Bluffton; 13 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; and 18 great great grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Sara Kathryn Miller; a sister, Wilma Myers; and three brothers, Richard, Russell and Robert Howdyshell.
Calling hours are Wednesday from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Goodwin Memorial Chapel in Bluffton, with services there Thursday at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Larry Taylor officiating.
Burial will be in Six Mile cemetery. Preferred memorials to Head Start.

Richard “Dick” Mayne, 80
Richard D. “Dick” Mayne, 80, Bluffton, died at 7:26 p.m. Friday, June 18 at Lutheran Hospital.
Born in Huntington on Aug. 15, 1923 to Cyril F. and Evalyn Dinius Mayne, he married
Ellen Adamson in Huntington in 1956; she survives.
A graduate of Huntington High School and Michigan State University, he was a retired engineer with International Harvester. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II and had been a Wells County resident since 1954. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a member and past Exalted Ruler of the Bluffton Elks Lodge, a member of the Amity Masonic Lodge in Huntington, American Legion Post 111 in Bluffton and the Rubber and Plastics Group of America.
Other survivors include three sons, Thomas, Michael and John Mayne, all of Bluffton; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Dr. Robert Mayne.
Calling hours are today from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Thoma/Rich, Hewitt & Chaney Funeral Home. There will be an Elks Memorial Service at 7 p.m. this evening. Services are Tuesday at the funeral home beginning at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Gary Lewis officiating.
Burial will be in the Gardens of Memory in Marion. Memorials are to donor’s choice.

Vance Travis, 83
A former Bluffton resident, Vance W. Travis, 83, of Fort Wayne, died at 5:45 a.m. Saturday at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne.
Born in Travisville on Feb. 7, 1921 to Theodore and Laura Romine Travis, he married
Martha (Madeline) Reynolds on July 25, 1941 in Bluffton; she died in August of 1979.
He attended Poplar Grove School and graduated from Bluffton High School in 1939. A veteran in the U.S. Army during World War II, he was a postal carrier in Bluffton from 1952-1959 and in Fort Wayne from 1959 to 1970. He also worked as a federal police officer at the Federal Building in Fort Wayne from 1970-1985.
While living in Bluffton, he was active in various Boy Scout programs. He was a member of Calvary Temple in Fort Wayne, active in the bus ministry.
Survivors include a son, Steve Travis, and a daughter, Wendy Gehring, both of Fort Wayne; seven grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Gary Travis in 1987; and a brother, Vaughn Travis.
Services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Calvary Temple in Fort Wayne, with calling two hours prior at the church. Burial will take place at a later date.
Arrangements are being handled by Thoma/Rich, Hewitt & Chaney Funeral Home in Bluffton.

James Schneider, 79
Services for Bluffton native Lt. Col. James M. Schneider, 79, of Fort Wayne, will be held at 2 p.m. Wed. at the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception in Fort Wayne. He died Saturday, June 19 at Parkview Hospital.
Born in Bluffton on July 9, 1924, he graduated from Liberty Center High School and Indiana University before enlisting in the Air Force in 1943. His 27-year career included serving as a bombardier and navigator in B-17’s over Europe in World War II and combat service in Vietnam.
He returned to Fort Wayne after his military career to manage Zeis Securities and was Parking Administrator of the City Parking Garage. He was a member of the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, was a founding member of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Indiana, and was active in a number of organizations.
Survivors include a son, Peter Schneider of Leo; two grandchildren; and two sisters, Anne Perrotta of Pompton Plains, N.J. and Rosemary Dunkin of Oklahoma City, Okla. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Marie (Hogan) Schneider in 2001.
Calling hours are Tuesday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the D.O. McComb & Son Foster Park Funeral Home in Fort Wayne. Burial will be in the Catholic cemetery. Memorials to the Masses.

Shane A. Mettler, 31
A resident of rural Bluffton, Shane A. Mettler, 31, died unexpectedly in LaGrange County Monday, June 21.
Born March 13, 1973 in Bluffton, he was the son of William R. and Janis S. Mettler of Bluffton, and Shirley A. Swinford of Fort Wayne. He was a 1992 graduate of Bluffton High School.
A member of the First United Methodist Church, he was employed by Coca-Cola for the past nine years, and was currently the home market account manager. He was a sports enthusiast active in basketball and softball.
Survivors include his parents; two sons, Trey A. Mettler of Bluffton and Peyton A. Kaylor of Huntington; a daughter, Kiersten J. Mettler, of Bluffton; a brother Shawn, of Fort Wayne; a sister, Marci, of Bluffton; and grandparents James and Martha Lehman of Bluffton and Homer and Helen Bates of Ossian.
He was preceded in death by grandparents Robert and Virginia Mettler.
Services at 10 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church will be under the direction of Rev. Gary Lewis and Rev. Bruce Holland. Burial will follow at Six Mile cemetery.
Calling hours are from 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Thoma/Rich, Hewitt & Chaney Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church.

Kathryn M. Jesse, 96
Kathryn M. Jesse, 96, Ossian, died Monday, June 21, at Bluffton Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 25, 1908 in Fort Wayne to Frank and Kathryn E. Swihart Sellers, she was married
to Herbert T. Jesse. He preceded her in death in 1986.
A homemaker, she was a member of the Salem United Church of Christ, a 50-year member of the Waynedale Chapter of Order of Eastern Star, a 50-year member of the Fort Wayne Chapter of Rebecca Lodge and a 68-year member of the Marion County Homemakers.
Survivors include two sons, William of Ossian, and David of Fort Wayne; nine children and 10 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, two sons, Thomas and Herbert L. preceded her in death.
Services at 11 a.m. Thursday under the direction of Rev. Scott Coulter will be at Elzey-Patterson-Rodak Funeral Home Ossian. Burial will be at Lindenwood cemetery.
Calling at the funeral home will be 2-8 p.m. Wednesday.
Memorials may be made to Salem United Church of Christ or Family Hospice of Northeast Indiana.

Steven C. Tumbleson, 55
A sound system operator for a number of area Gospel groups for over 20 years, Steven C. Tumbleson, 55, Decatur, died at 7:32 a.m. Monday, June 21 at the Adams County Memorial Hospital Emergency Room.
Born Feb. 14, 1949 in Adams County to Charles and Norma Liechty Tumbleson, he married
the former Gail A. Lehman Aug. 19, 1984. She survives.
An employee of M.C. Hilty Construction of Berne he was formerly employed by Dolco Packaging in Decatur from 1973 until 2003.
He was a member of the Bridge Community Church in Decatur and was most recently associated with the Homeland Gospel Quartet.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Abigail, at home and a brother, P. Douglas Tumbleson of Monroe.
Services at 10 a.m. Saturday will be held at the Bridge Community Church. Rev. Mo Hodge and Rev. Floyd Vieth will officiate and burial will follow in the Mt. Tabor cemetery.
Calling at Zwick and Jahn Funeral Home in Decatur will be from 1-4 p.m. and 5-8 p.m. Friday and one hour prior to services Saturday at the church.
Preferred memorials are to Bridge Community Church.

Basil D. King, 81
A native of Wells County, Basil D.King, 81, of Berne, died at 5:27 a.m.Tuesday, June 22, 2004, at Adams County Memorial Hospital in Decatur.
Born August 23, 1922, he was the son of Ernest and Verda Duff King. His marriage was on July 17, 1944, in Wells County to Jessie Stauffer, who survives.
Mr. King’s employment was at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base at Dayton, Ohio. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Bluffton.
Surviving in addition to his wife are one son, Mark King of Dayton, Ohio; one daughter, Joan Cribbs of Baker City, Oregon; one sister, Joyce Hunt of Fort Wayne, and two grandchildren. A sister, Wanda Emo, is deceased.
Calling will be Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. and Friday for one hour prior to the services at Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home, with the services there to be at 10 a.m.Friday with Rev. Scott Meier officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery at Linn Grove.

Wava R. Jockisch, 83
Sister of Garth Welches of rural Markle, Wava Jockisch, 83, died at 3:12 a.m. on Wednesday, June 16, 2004, in Dunkirk, Maryland.
She was born May 31, 1921, in Markle to Harry L. and Alma Vollmar Welches. Her marriage was on Oct. 29, 1945, to Melvin Jockisch, who died in April of 1994.
Surviving, in addition to the rural Markle brother, are a son, Duane Joseph of Dunkirk, Maryland; three sisters, Juanita Walker of Columbia City, Arlene Brown of Homer, Alaska, and Marcella Cunningham of Deming, New Mexico; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A brother, Kenneth, is deceased.
Services were Monday, June 21, at the Lee Funeral Home in Dunkirk, Maryland, with calling from 10 a.m. to noon. Burial was at Holly Memorial Gardens in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Tuesday, June 22.

Anita Creek-Blake, 53
A native of Bluffton, Anita Creek Blake, 53, of Upland, Calif., died May 23, 2004 in West Covina, Calif. Death was attributed to cancer.
Born Dec. 19, 1950 to Everett L. and Ruthella Furnas Creek, she was a 1969 graduate of Bluffton High School.
In 1977 she graduated from Ball State University and moved to Madison Wis., where, in 1980, she earned a masters degree in social work at Wisconsin University. She then moved to California and worked as an adoption case worker.
A former member of the First United Methodist Church in Bluffton, she was a member of the Claremont United Methodist Church in Claremont, Calif.
Survivors include three daughters, Alyssa and Audrey Easton of Crown Point and Emily Blake of Upland, Calif; two brothers, David E. Creek of Decatur and James L. Creek of Fort Wayne and a partner, Ken Easton.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph, on July 21, 1992.
Burial was at Rose Hills Memorial Park on May 28.
A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday at 10 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church, Bluffton, with Pastor Gary Lewis officiating.
Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church or Emily Blake.
