Gary Russell
BOONVILLE — Gary E. Russell, 57, died of an apparent heart attack Saturday, March 31, 2001, at St. Mary’s Warrick.
He worked for National City Bank in Evansville for 22 years and owned and operated Deluxe Cleaners in Boonville for 17 years.
He was a 1961 graduate of Castle High School, attended Oakland City College and graduated in 1975 from the American Institute of Banking in Madison, Wis., as an audit major.
He served in the National Guard from 1961 to 1967,
He was a member of the Boonville Car Nuts Street Rod Owners.
Surviving are his wife of 33 years, Nancy (Marshall); a daughter, Deborah Russell of Kokomo; a son, Mark of Evansville; two sisters, Phyllis Duffy of Evansville and Patsy Cohoon of Chandler; two brothers, Billy of Evansville and Timothy of Chandler; and nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Koehler Funeral Home Boonville Chapel, with burial in Greenwood cemetery in Chandler.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 a.m. to service time at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Bread of Life Ministry.
Lyle Bell
Lyle John Bell, 60, of Evansville, died of pulmonary fibrosis Saturday, March 31, 2001, at St. Mary’s Medical Center.
He owned and operated the VIP Barber Shop for 40 years.
He was a member of Methodist Temple, Lessing Lodge 464, Scottish Rite and Hadi Shrine, a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, the University of Evansville Aces and Evansville high school teams, and he was a golfer.
He played Santa Claus for foster children and at Bethel United Church of Christ Nursery School.
Surviving are his wife of 40 years, Andrea (Breidenbach); two daughters, Melissa Bell Gwaltney and Amy Bell Wilhite, both of Evansville; two sisters, Susanne Bell Young of Berwyn, Pa., and Virginia Bell Lapcheska of West Lafayette, Ind.; a brother, Frederick M. of Glenview, Ill.; five grandchildren, Andrea, Joshua, Jacob, Logan and Landon; and nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Alexander Funeral Home East Chapel, the Revs. Donald W. Bernhardt and Joseph Ziliak officiating.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, with Masonic services at 6:30 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hadi Shrine Transportation Fund or Family & Children’s Fund (Office of Families & Children of Vanderburgh County).
Bertha Dunn
Bertha M. (McCool) Dunn, 72, of Evansville, died of congestive heart failure Friday, March 31, 2001, at Good Samaritan Home.
She retired in 1991 from General Electric in Cincinnati.
She was a member of the Evansville Sewing Guild.
Surviving are two daughters, Marcia K. Minton of Evansville and Carol A. Kendra of Erie, Pa.; two sisters, Mary Johnson of Vincennes, Ind., and Joan McKibben of Sebring, Fla.; two grandchildren, Cassie and Brandon Kendra; and a great-grandson.
Her husband, John, died in 1991.
Services will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Pierre Funeral Home, the Rev. Mary Hendrickson officiating, with burial in Vincennes Memorial Park cemetery.
Friends may call from 4 p.m. to service time at Pierre Funeral Home and from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday at Goodwin Funeral Home in Vincennes.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
James Winfield
James L. Winfield, 76, of Evansville, died of a heart condition Thursday, March 29, 2001, at home.
Surviving are five sisters, Oliveen C. Winfield, with whom he lived, Jackie Hurt, Marjorie Brantley and Berdina Gariepy, all of Evansville, and Virginia Naomi Dayvolt of Falls of Rough, Ky.; and nieces and nephews.
Services will be private. The body will be cremated. There will be no visitation at Alexander Funeral Home West Chapel.
Virgie Byers
Virgie E. Byers, 92, of Evansville, died Friday, March 30, 2001, at Newburgh Healthcare Center.
She was office manager for 45 years at McConnell Coal Co.
She was a life member of Main Street General Baptist Church in Boonville, Ind., where she taught Sunday school for more than 20 years, and a graduate of Boonville High School and Lockyear Business College.
Surviving are a niece who cared for her, Carolyn Byers of Evansville; a great-nephew who cared for her, Kim Byers of Evansville; and a nephew.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Koehler Funeral Home Boonville Chapel, the Rev. Dwight Bland officiating, with burial in Maple Grove cemetery in Boonville.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. to service time at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Main Street General Baptist Church.
Joe Matthews
Joe Nathan Matthews, 102, died of pneumonia Friday, March 30, 2001, at Columbia Healthcare Facility.
He worked for Bumb and Mueller Farms and in the construction industry.
He was a life member of Line Street Church of Christ and a hunter and fisherman.
Surviving are a daughter, Marion Redding of Evansville; a son, Elmer Redding of Evansville; three grandchildren, LaQuanda Brown, John Redding and Nadelvia Spady; eight great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine Antoinette (Ford), in 1980, and a daughter, Bernice Matthews, in 1992.
Arrangements are pending at Osborne Funeral Home.
Virgie Woeltz
Virgie M. Woeltz, 91, formerly of Evansville, died Saturday at Regina Continuing Care Center.
She was a member of St. Francis DeSales Church in Paducah, Ky., and a former member of the Knights of Columbus Auxiliary and Prayer Network at the church.
She formerly attended St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Newburgh.
Surviving are two daughters, Paula Griesbacher of Newburgh and Margaret Reisz of Fairfield Glade, Tenn.; five grandchildren, Ann Crane, Bill Griesbacher, Joan and Mike Reisz and Mary Wedertz; and five great-grandchildren.
Her husband, Michael J., died in 1989.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Francis DeSales Church in Paducah, the Rev. Larry McBride officiating, with burial in Mount Carmel cemetery in Paducah.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Roth Funeral Home in Paducah, with rosary services at 6 p.m.

Karen Giovanetti
Karen S. Giovanetti, 65, of Evansville, died of complications of a stroke Saturday, March 31, 2001, at St. Mary’s Medical Center.
She was secretary at Bosse High School and evening secretary at Evansville College.
She was on the Quilting Committee and Board of Education at Our Saviour Lutheran Church and was a golfer.
Surviving are her mother, Pearl Bradley of Evansville; a sister, Sandy Salyer of Evansville; and nieces and a nephew.
Her husband of 40 years, Jim, died in 1998.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Our Saviour Church, the Rev. Robert Wurst officiating, with burial in Alexander Memorial Park.
Friends may call from noon to 6 p.m. today at Alexander Funeral Home East Chapel and from 10 a.m. to service time at the church.

Opal James
Opal Cohoon James, 91, of Evansville, died Saturday, March 31, 2001, at Regina Continuing Care Center.
She retired in 1971 after 30 years with Evansville State Hospital.
She was a member of Bethel Temple.
Surviving are a sister, Dorothy Russell of Evansville; three nieces who cared for her, Hannah and Ruth Sharer, both of Chandler, Ind., and Nora Gladys Greenwood of Boonville, Ind.; and seven nephews who cared for her, Daniel Eugene Folsom Sr. and James Folsom Sr., both of Evansville, John Folsom of Chandler, Robert L. Folsom of Lynnville, Ind., Roy Carver Jr. of Huntingburg, Ind., Charles Carver of Gentryville, Ind., and Ronnie Carver of Boonville.
Her husband, Irving, died in 1976.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Koehler Funeral Home Boonville Chapel, the Rev. R. R. Schwambach officiating, with burial in Skelton cemetery near Tennyson, Ind.
