William Monical
William R. Monical, 74, of Granite City, Ill., formerly of Evansville, died of heart failure Saturday, March 31, 2001, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Granite City.
He retired as Scout executive after 33 years with the Boy Scouts. He was a World War II Navy veteran. He was a member of Suburban Baptist Church and Granite City Optimist Club.
Surviving are his wife, Georgetta; a daughter, Laura Megard of Cape Coral, Fla.; two sons, Blake of Granite City and Kent of Independence, Mo.; two sisters, Mary Elizabeth Miller and Virginia Schulz, both of Evansville; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Alexander Funeral Home West Chapel, with burial in Park Lawn cemetery.

Richard Roberts
Richard J. Roberts, 86, died Saturday, March 31, 2001, at his home.
He retired from Ed Whiteheads TV & Appliance Service and Delivery after 15 years.
He was an Army veteran and a former member of the Owls Nest. He was a fisherman and a hunter.
Surviving are four daughters, Pammie Barr and Rita Schmidt, both of Evansville, Janet Irvan of Morrill, Neb., and Linda Reuber of Mount Vernon, Ind; a son, James of Evansville; two stepsons, Rick of Evansville and Bill Williams of Pekin, Ill.; two sisters, Sister Annella Roberts of Oldenburg, Ind., and Millie Werner of Leesburg, Fla.; 20 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorene, in the 1973.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, at Miller and Miller Colonial Chapel, the Rev. August Busch officiating, with burial in Oak Hill cemetery.

Horace Gray
Horace Walter William Gray, 73, of Evansville, died of an aneurism Saturday, March 31, 2001, at Deaconess Hospital.
He retired in 1980 after 20 years with Dart Industries. He was a World War II Navy veteran and a Korean War Air Force veteran. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a founding member of the River City Golfers.
He was a member of Cleaves Memorial CME Church, served as chairman of Men’s Day, was former president of the Methodist Men’s Club, secretary of the Steward Board 2 and a member of the men’s chorus.
Surviving are a daughter, Patricia Gray of Atlanta; three stepdaughters, Barbara Byrd of Cincinnati, Joyce Hardison of Princeton, Ind., and Maryllis Ann Dillard of Evansville; a son, William of Evansville; four stepsons, Edmund Sanders of Earlington, Ky., David Grimes of Dayton, Ohio, the Rev. Joseph Grimes of Boonville, Ind., and Kenneth Grimes of Evansville; a sister, Gracie Ophelia Tidwell of Evansville; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a caregiver, Hope Darrett.
He was preceded in death by two wives, Irene, in 1977, and Erma Grimes-Gray in 2000.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Cleaves Memorial CME Church, the Rev. James Buckner officiating, with burial in Oak Hill cemetery.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday at Mason Brothers Memorial Chapel and from 6 to 8 p.m. at the church.
Pauline Meyer
HUNTINGBURG — Pauline Louise Meyer, 86, died Sunday, April 1, 2001, at The Waters.
She had worked at Katterhenry’s Store and the First National Bank.
Surviving is a cousin who cared for her, Connie Nass.
Her husband, Chester, preceded her in death.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Nass & Son Funeral Home, with burial in Fairmount cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today.

Irwin Hoffman
HUNTINGBURG — Irwin Fred Hoffman, 69, died of complications of surgery Sunday, April 1, 2001, at his home.
He was a farmer, had worked for Ackerman Oil and was a greeter at Wal-Mart.
He had been a 4-H leader and council member.
Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Rita M. (Begle); five daughters, Marcia Lindauer and Ruth Meyer, both of Jasper, Karen Hochgesang of Colorado, Janet Reed of Lowell and Donna Dafoe of Bloomington; three sons, Jim of Jasper and John and Tom, both of Huntingburg; a sister, Gerry Rummel of Arkansas; and 16 grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, with burial in the church cemetery.
Friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m. today.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Association.
Mary Brooks
LOOGOOTEE — Mary E. “Betsy” Brooks, 76, died of heart failure Saturday, March 31, 2001, at Attic Angel Health Center in Madison, Wis.
She retired as the head of the Spanish and Portuguese Department at the University of Wisconsin.
She completed her last two years of high school and learned to fly a plane at Stevens College in Missouri. She received her bachelor’s degree at Purdue University and her master’s and doctorate at the University of New Mexico. She was a supporter of Native American charities.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church and Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.
Surviving are a sisters, Barbara Copple of San Jose, Calif.; and a brother, Dr. Fred Brooks Jr. of Indianapolis.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church, with burial in Goodwill cemetery.
Friends may call 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Titzer Funeral Home from 9 a.m. to service time at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the University of Wisconsin Foundation or Kappa Kappa Gamma Scholarships.
Fay Riley
FORT BRANCH — Fay J. Riley, 93, died Sunday, April 1, 2001, at The Waters.
She attended Clark’s Chap-el Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Elizabeth Williams of Evansville and Catherine Williams of Fort Branch; a son, Don Paul of Francisco; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carlos, and a son, Carlos Jr.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Corn-Colvin Funeral Home, with burial in Providence cemetery in Francisco.

Barbara Swain
OWENSVILLE — Barbara Joan Swain, 66, died of respiratory failure Sunday, April 1, 2001, at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville.
She was a member of the General Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Albert; a son, Brad of Kokomo; her stepmother, Emma Leighty of Petersburg; two sisters, Mary Jane Ingersoll of Petersburg and Elzena J. Strain of Fort Branch; two brothers, Tom Leighty of Arcadia, Fla., and David Leighty of Petersburg; and three grandchildren, Steven, Cyndee and Alicia.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Harris Funeral Home, with burial in Walnut Hills cemetery.

Marilyn Helmbock
PRINCETON — Marilyn S. Helmbock, 61, died of leukemia Monday, April 2, 2001, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Evansville.
She was a seamstress, worked at Wanda’s Bridal Creations and was a member of the Lady Moose.
Surviving are her husband, William “Butch” of Patoka; a daughter, Myra Whipkey of Princeton; two sons, Michael John Faith of Newburgh and Stanley “Bill” Faith Jr. of Springville; a stepson, Stephen K. of Evansville; a sister, Shirley Church of Princeton; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Colvin Funeral Home, with burial pending. Friends may call from 1:30 p.m. to service time.
Grovie Laninghan
VELPEN — Grovie A. Laninghan, 89, died Saturday, March 31, 2001, in Dale at the Community Care Center.
There are no immediate survivors. Her husband, Archy H., died in 1997.
Arrangements were handled by Curtis Funeral Home, with burial in Cup Creek cemetery.
Howard Gabhart
WASHINGTON — Howard Gabhart, 90, died Friday, March 30, 2001, at Hillside Manor Nursing Center.
He had been a farmer and was in the plumbing and heating business. He was a member of the Alfordsville Christian Church and a Kentucky Colonel.
Surviving are his wife, Enid (Baker); nine daughters, Margaret Enid Kennedy of Lancaster, Calif., Amy June Gardner of Alfordsville, Christina Ruth Roach of Mitchell, Georgia Anne Prewett and Sarah Jane Alvey, both of Washington, Mary Frances Bell of Cincinnati, Martha Lee Brammer of Indianapolis and Lorna Gayle Cook and Annie Bruce Snyder, both of Atlanta; four sons, Wyndham Howard of Jackson, Miss., Charles Roland of Jasper, Thomas Stanley of Huntingburg and Phillip Morgan of Alfordsville; 52 grandchildren; 72 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Lee Funeral Home, with burial in Community cemetery in Alfordsville.
