John Hopper
VINCENNES - John W. Hopper, 82, died Saturday, June 30, 2001, at Crestview Nursing Home.
He retired as the director of operations for E. Bierhaus & Sons, was a World War II Army veteran and was a member of St. John Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the Elks.
Surviving are three daughters, Virginia L. Hopper of Carmel, Phyliss Ann Haag of Vincennes and Veronica L. Carter of Cleveland Heights, Ohio; a son, John G. of Los Angeles; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
His wife, Helen C. (Recker), preceded him in death.
Services will be at 10 a.m. today at St. John Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Calvary cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Christian Education Foundation or the church building fund.
Edwin Schmitt
HAUBSTADT - Edwin J. Schmitt, 85, died Monday, July 2, 2001, at his home.
He was a farmer and member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and St. Vincent de Paul.
Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Marjorie (Reibel); three daughters, Marilyn Elpers and Nancy Laswell, both of Haubstadt, and RuthAnn Hurt of Francisco; four sons, Bob and Charles, both of Haubstadt, Donald of Princeton and Roger of Kernersville, N.C.; a sister, Helen Simon of Haubstadt; six brothers, Al of Evansville, Anthony of Cynthiana, Bernard, Urban Sr. and Raymond, all of Poseyville and Jerome of Haubstadt; 30 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Elpers, who died Saturday.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, with burial in the church cemetery.
Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Stodghill Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Vistacare Hospice Foundation.
Mildred Hennig
PRINCETON - Mildred O. Hennig, 78, died Monday, July 2, 2001, at Gibson General Hospital Skilled Nursing Facility of a stroke.
She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabella and American Legion Post 25 Ladies Auxiliary.
Surviving are her husband of 56 years, Robert P.; two sons, William R. of Mason City, Iowa, and David A. of Evansville; a brother, James Schmidt of Chicago; three grandsons, William R. 'B.J.' II, Brian C. and Bradley G. Hennig; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with burial in the church cemetery.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Colvin Funeral Home, with a wake service at 6 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to her church or a favorite charity.
Birdena Kimmell
VINCENNES - Birdena L. Kimmell, 83, died Saturday, June 30, 2001, at Good Samaritan Home.
She was a housekeeper for Farm Bureau Insurance for more than 35 years.
Surviving is a sister, June Marie Cassell of Washington.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Memorial Park cemetery. Duesterberg-Fredrick Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
Freddie Lucas Sr.
VINCENNES - Freddie L. Lucas Sr., 51, died Saturday, June 30, 2001, at his home of a cerebral disruption.
Surviving are two daughters, Savannah Burkhart of Oaktown and Helen Smith of Decker; a son, Freddie Jr. of Wyoming; his foster mother, Helen Smith of Vincennes; five sisters, Mavis Jones of Vincennes, Sharon Meredith of Evansville, Cheryl Cardinal of Wheatland, Vickie Newkirk of Monroe City and Nancy DeLisle of Terre Haute; four brothers, Roger, Jack, Jerry and Gary, all of Vincennes; and six grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Thursday in Wharf cemetery in Decker.

Dorothy Alexander
Dorothy J. (Martine) Alexander, 78, formerly of Evansville, died Wednesday, June 27, 2001, at Freedom Square Nursing Center in Seminole, Fla., of complications of Parkinson's disease.
She had worked as a secretary.
She was a member of the Methodist faith.
Surviving are her husband of 55 years, Clarence, of Largo, Fla.; a daughter, Jeanne Webb of Crockett, Calif.; a sister, Marguerite Orth of LaGrange, Ill.; a brother, Roger M. Martine of Largo; and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Boone Funeral Home East Chapel, the Rev. Joseph Easley officiating, with burial in Oak Hill cemetery.
Friends may call from 11 a.m. to service time at the funeral home.

Fred Hodge
Fred A. Hodge, 80, of Evansville, died Saturday, June 30, 2001, at St. Mary's Medical Center of complications from a stroke.
He had worked at SIGECO for 48 years.
He was an avid tennis player, winning many city championship titles, including the singles championship in 1945 and numerous doubles championships, two of which he played with his son Bob.
He was also a basketball official for the Indiana High School Athletic Association for 23 years.
Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Vera (Fellwock) Hodge of Evansville; a daughter, Patti Robison of Brownstown, Ind.; a son, Bob Hodge of Wadesville, Ind.; a brother, Don Hodge of Evansville; and five grandchildren, Robin Bass, Shannon Kraft, Erin and Reid Sparks and Nicholas Robison.
Private services are planned for Tuesday at Browning Funeral Home, the Revs. Eric Schillo and Wade Butler officiating, with burial in Lutheran cemetery.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Ruth Choate
Ruth Helen Choate, 73, of Evansville, died Friday, June 29, 2001, at St. Mary's Medical Center of cancer.
She was a member of Vann Avenue Baptist Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Barbara A. Homesley of Stanley, N.C., and Carol S. Burton of Evansville; a sister, Hazel M. Canary of Evansville; a granddaughter, Kelli Walker of Kingsport, Tenn.; a grandson, Alexander Burton of Evansville; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William H. 'Jack' Choate, in 1980.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Alexander Funeral Home East Chapel, the Rev. Robert A. Nall officiating, with burial in Sunset Memorial Park cemetery.
Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. today and from 11 a.m. to service time at the funeral home.

Henrietta Tombaugh
Henrietta Tombaugh, 76, of Evansville, died Friday, June 29, 2001, at the Columbia Health Care Center of cancer.
She was a cosmetologist and owned and operated the Beau-Etta Beauty Salon in Mount Carmel, Ill., as well as co-owning and operating the Tombaugh Jewelry Store and the Ben Franklin Store in Mount Carmel for more than 30 years.
She was a member of Evangelical United Methodist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Tanca Lynn Priddis of Evansville; and two grandchildren, Tiffani Lyn and Tahnee Leigh Priddis.
She was preceded in death by a son, John Craig Tombaugh.
Private services will be at Highland Memorial cemetery in Mount Carmel. The body will be cremated.
There will be no visitation at Short Funeral Home.

Lester Knight
TASWELL - Lester I. Knight, 98, died Friday, June 29, 2001, at Memorial Hospital in Jasper.
He was a retired mail carrier.
He was a member of Eckerty Masonic Lodge and Lincoln Hills United Methodist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Alamae Walton of Taswell; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Lincoln Hills United Methodist Church in English, the Revs. Don Cline and Larry Platt officiating, with burial in Taswell cemetery.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. to noon at Denbo Funeral Home in English and from 12:30 p.m. to service time at the church.
