Mary Pieper
DUBOIS — Mary Pieper, 89, died Thursday, May 4, 2000, at Northwood Good Samaritan Nursing Center in Jasper.
She was a member of St. Raphael Catholic Church.
Surviving are six daughters, Mary Margaret Cruze of Beech Grove, Janet Sue Stevens of West Baden, Carol Ebert of Dubois, Betty Helming of Celestine, Barbara Schroeder of Ireland, Ind., and Rose Mary Fuhs of Jasper; three sons, Eugene C. and Richard Lee “Dick, ” both of Dubois and Steven of Jasper; two sisters, Helen Davern and Albertine Kinzer, both of Louisville, Ky.; 27 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.
Her husband, Anthony Sr., died in 1973 and a son, Anthony Jr., preceded her in death.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Raphael Catholic Church, with burial in the church cemetery.
Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper.

Robert Hornback
OWENSVILLE — Robert L. Hornback, 79, died Thursday at Gibson General Hospital of an apparent heart attack.
He retired from Chrysler Corp. in St. Louis as an inspector.
He was a World War II Army veteran and member of the Princeton American Legion Post 25.
He was a member of the Rosedale Southern Baptist Church in Fort Branch.
Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Elsie (Chamberlain); two sons, Donald Lee of Indianapolis and Gary Dean of St. Louis; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Holder Funeral Home, with burial in Highland cemetery in Mount Carmel, Ill., with military rites.

Hoyt Matteson
WASHINGTON — Hoyt Denver Matteson, 84, died Wednesday, May 3, 2000, at his home in Toledo, Ohio.
He retired as an engineer for the B&O; Railroad in 1979 after 40 years.
He was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers.
Surviving are his wife, Ruby; a daughter, Linda Dix of Toledo; two sisters, Myrtle Fifer of Hallandale, Fla., and Sylvie Henry of Chiefland, Fla.; two grandchildren, Roy R. and Marisa Benoit; and a great-grandson.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Gill Funeral Home, with burial in Sugarland Memory Gardens.

Ruth Riffey
WASHINGTON — Ruth A. Riffey, 89, died Wednesday, May 3, 2000, at the Loogootee Nursing Center.
She was a 1928 graduate of Washington High School and a member of the First Christian Church.
Surviving are a sister, Mary Garland of Washington; four grandchildren, Cheryl Chadwell, Vernie Burns, Lori Mueller and Laren Riffey; and nine great-grandchildren.
Her husband, Robert LeRoy “Roy, ” a daughter, Linda L. Burns, and a son, Richard D., preceded her in death.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Gill Funeral Home, with burial in Oak Grove cemetery.

Dr. Patrick Corcoran
Dr. Patrick J.V. Corcoran MD, 88, of Evansville, died Friday, April 28, 2000, at St. Mary’s Medical Center.
He served in many different areas of the medical profession, focusing his talents in the area of medical education and served on several medical boards and associations.
He was a diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine in 1947, a fellow at the American College of Physicians in 1953, president of the Vanderburgh County Medical Society from 1958 to 1960, president of the Vanderburgh Foundation for Medical Care from 1960 to 1981 and the Indiana State Medical Association from 1969 to 1970.
He was a professor of medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine from 1970 to 1982 and professor emeritus from 1982 to the present. He served as director of the IU Center for Medical Education in Evansville from 1971 to 1983 and was assistant dean of the IU School of Medicine from 1980 to 1983.
He was an alternate delegate for the American Medical Association from 1970 to 1973 and a delegate from 1974 to 1981, a member of the Board of Directors of the Southwestern Indiana Medical Review Organization from 1975 to 1980, president of the medical and dental staff at St. Mary’s Hospital from 1950 to 1952, Chairman of the Building Foundation at St. Mary’s from 1954 to 1956 and co-author of “Medical Education in Evansville—Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow, ” as well as several other medical publications.
He was director of medical education at Welborn Baptist Hospital from 1982 to 1997, a member of the Council on Medical Education AMA and chairman in 1982, member of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education in 1980, vice chairman in 1981 to 1982 and chairman in 1982. He was named Sagamore of the Wabash in 1985 and was presented with the Laureate Award from the American College of Physicians in 1990.
He received his bachelor’s degree in 1934 from the University of Notre Dame, his medical degrees in 1938 and 1939 from Northwestern University Medical and Graduate schools, and an internal medicine degree from St. Louis University Graduate School in 1943.
Surviving are four daughters, Ellen Hegeman and Sheila Corcoran, both of Evansville, Monica Ann Coppinger of Houston and Dr. Val Corcoran Wenzler of Indianapolis; a son, Timothy Christopher of Evansville; and seven grandchildren, George and Patrick Coppinger, Andrew, Clare and Mary Kate Hegeman and Patrick and Richard Wenzler.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret B., in 1997, and by a daughter, Mary Patricia Corcoran, in 1952.
Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Ziemer Funeral Home East Chapel, continuing at 10 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church, Monsignor Kenneth Knapp and the Rev. Raymond Kuper officiating, with burial in St. Joseph cemetery.

Jeanette Perry
Jeanette Smith Perry, 74, of North Port, Fla., formerly of Evansville, died Friday, April 28, 2000, at Englewood Community Hospital in Englewood, Fla.
She worked as a supervisor at Stewart Warner in Chicago and worked for Central Industries in Illinois.
She was past president of the Knox County Democratic Women’s Club and was a precinct captain.
Surviving are three daughters, Connie Long and Sue Phister, both of Chicago, and Sharon Stivers of Vincennes, Ind.; three sons, Robert of Vincennes, Woody of Chicago and David of North Port; a sister, Evelyn Rogers of Evansville; a brother, Chris Smith of Evansville; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Merle, in 1998, and by a son, Kenny, who was killed in Vietnam.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Browning Funeral Home, the Rev. Dennis Davenport officiating, with burial in Sunset Memorial Park cemetery.

Lavada Abel
Lavada E. Abel, 93, of Evansville, died Friday, April 28, 2000, at Deaconess Hospital.
She had worked at Fendrich Cigar Co.
She was a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ.
Surviving are her caregivers, Gary and Cathy Wainman of Evansville.
Her husband, George, died in 1982.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Alexander Funeral Home West Chapel, the Rev. Doyle Eddings officiating, with burial in Alexander Memorial Park.

Martin Shutt
Martin E. Shutt, 76, of Evansville, died Saturday, April 29, 2000, at North Park Nursing Center of respiratory failure.
He retired in 1962 from the Good Samaritan Home as their maintenance man.
He attended East Side Church of God.
He was a World War II Army veteran and was a prisoner of war for 18 months.
Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Juanita; four daughters, Sonja Peardon of Hammond, Ind., and Sandra Skelton, Rachel Strickland and Cheryl Jacobs, all of Evansville; three sons, Michael Shutt of Dade City, Fla., and Larry Perkins and Martin R. Shutt, both of Evansville; two sisters, Susie McRoy and Sudie Johnson, both of Greenville, Ky.; a brother, Austin of Greenville; 14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Brett Shutt, in 1966.
Services will be at noon Monday at Alexander Funeral Home East Chapel, the Rev. Billy Dean Heard officiating, with burial in Locust Hill cemetery, with military rites.

Emmy Lou Goldstein
Emmy Lou (Redman) Goldstein, 72, of Los Angeles, formerly of Evansville and Mount Vernon, Ind., died Sunday, April 23, 2000, at Lourdes Hospital in Paducah, Ky., of a heart attack.
She was involved in fund-raising projects and volunteer work for several area hospital and had a lifelong interest in art.
Surviving are two sons, Steve of Los Angeles and Tony of Las Vegas; four sisters, Irma King of Mount Vernon, Margaret Trevathan of Murray, Ky., Mariana Kessler of Marion, Ill., and Serena Rowland of San Antonio; two brothers, David Redman of Oak Ridge, Tenn., and Mark Redman of Evansville; and two grandchildren, Jennifer and Clinton Goldstein.
Graveside services were held in Los Angeles.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alexandrian Public Library in Mount Vernon.
Edmond Dunivan
Edmond Mark Dunivan, 29, of Evansville, died Friday, April 28, 2000, at the home of a friend in English, Ind. The cause of death has not yet been determined by the Crawford County coroner.
He was a former insurance agent for the Knights of Columbus and a rodeo bull rider.
He was Catholic.
Surviving are his wife, Stacey Lent of Silver Spring, Md.; his father and stepmother, Edmond M. and Betty Dunivan of Evansville; and two brothers, David Gillispie of Belleville, Mich., and Mathew White of Pickney, Mich.
Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Miller & Miller Colonial Chapel, continuing at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Rev. Eugene A. Dewig officiating, with burial in St. Joseph cemetery.
