Benson Strunk

Benson Strunk, 93, of Evansville, died Monday, Sept. 18, 2000, at St. Mary’s Medical Center.

He retired in 1969 after 36 years with

Prudential Life Insurance and was a member of the Prudential Retiree Club.

In the 1920s and 1930s, he was an auto mechanic and one of the first boat racers on the Ohio River. He was a member of the Old North United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife of 72 years, Helen E.; a daughter, Beverly Molloy of Breckinridge, Colo.; a son, B. Michael of Evergreen, Colo.; a grandson, David Scott Strunk; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Alexander Funeral Home North Chapel, the Rev. Gary M. Scharr officiating, with burial in Alexander Memorial Park.

Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army.

Olive Ice

Olive (Tabelman) Ice, 89, of Evansville, died Monday, Sept. 18, 2000, at her home.

She worked as a seamstress in several clothing stores. She was a member of the St. James East United Methodist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Carolyn Manees of Mount Vernon, Ill., and Donna Dillback of Evansville; a sister, Alma Ludwig of Newburgh; five grandchildren, Ron, Mark and Dan Gentry, Gregory Dillback and Melissa “Missy” Schwindel; 10 great-grandchildren; and a friend who cared for her, Adrianne Sloat.

Her husband, Donald J., died in 1979.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Browning Funeral Home, the Rev. Robert Nall officiating, with entombment in Park Lawn cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Gertrude Kitzinger

Gertrude E. “Gertie” (Higdon) Kitzinger, 71, of Evansville, died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2000, at Deaconess Hospital of complications of cancer.

She retired in 1998 as a bookkeeper from Commercial Truck Components in Chandler, Ind., and had worked at Swanson-Nunn. She was a graduate of Reitz High School. She was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband of nine years, George; two stepdaughters, Renae Loesch and Terry Kitzinger, both of Evansville; a son, James R. Higdon of Owensboro, Ky.; a sister, Margaret Bauer of Evansville; three grandchildren, Ashley and Haley Higdon and Alissa Logsdon; a stepgrandson, Jason Loesch; and nieces and nephews.

Her first husband, Robert F. Higdon, died in 1988.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Boone Funeral Home East Chapel, the Rev. Tony McCall officiating, with burial in the Lutheran cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Kidney Foundation.

Infant Kamari Johnson

Kamari Danyelle Johnson, daughter of Korrea Jackson of Evansville and Terron Johnson of Henderson, Ky., was stillborn Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, at Deaconess Hospital.

Also surviving are grandparents, Patrice “Denea” and Tony Jackson, Sondra Carter and Felita and Derwin George.

Graveside services will be at noon Thursday in Sunset Memorial cemetery, the Rev. Anthony Brooks officiating.

Roy Conger

Roy D. Conger, 73, of Evansville, died Monday, Sept. 18, 2000, at Deaconess Hospital of cancer.

He retired after 32 years from Zenith Corp. He was a Korean War Army veteran and member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1114. He was a member of the Grace Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Berna; a daughter, Brenda Marlene Pelz of Newburgh; two sons, Terry of Evansville and David of Randolph Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas; two brothers, Harvey of Evansville and Harold of Hawesville, Ky.; six grandchildren, Patrick and Amy Pelz, Chevin and Isaac Conger and Rod and Ryan Zaricki; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Alexander Funeral Home North Chapel, the Revs. Tom Savage and Jerry Daniels officiating, burial in Locust Hill cemetery, with military rites.

Friends may call 2 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Deaconess/Ohio Valley Hospice Care or the Angel Tree Foundation.

Mary Gibbs

Mary L. Gibbs, 75, of Evansville, died Monday, Sept. 18, 2000, at her home of cancer.

Surviving are three daughters, Lois Ann Gibbs, Connie Sue Pryor and Kathy Lynn Sluder, all of Evansville; two sons, Tom and Tim, both of Evansville; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Her husband, Hershel, died in 1991.

There will be no service or visitation at Ziemer Funeral Home East Chapel, with burial pending in Locust Hill cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Deaconess/Ohio Valley Hospice Care.

Lee Withers

Lee T. Withers, 79, of Newburgh, died Friday, Sept. 15, 2000, at Cypress Grove Nursing & Rehabilitation Center of respiratory failure.

He worked for Hoffman’s Men’s Store. He was an Army veteran.

Surviving are a daughter, Kimberly Pike of Evansville; and a son, Greg Allen of Evansville.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Alexander Memorial Park. There will be no visitation at Alexander Funeral Home West Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made to Visiting Nurse Association Hospice.

Anna Birchler

Anna Catherine Birchler, 88, of Evansville, died Monday, Sept. 18, 2000, at Columbia Healthcare Center.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in the city and was in charge the Sunday dinners for 20 years, a member of St. Ann’s Altar Society and St. Theresa’s Auxiliary of the Knights of St. John.

Surviving are her husband of 66 years, Denis M.; a son, Clayton A. of Grafton, Ohio; two sisters, Agnes Berry Sutton and Margaret Kreisle, both of Newburgh; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Her daughter, Norma Jean Schneider, died in 1992.

Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday at Miller & Miller Colonial Chapel, continuing at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in the city, the church pastoral team and the Rev. Michael Allen officiating, with entombment in St. Joseph cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with a memorial service at 4 and at 6 p.m.

Norma Johnson

GENTRYVILLE — Norma Day (Clark) Johnson, 76, died Friday Sept. 15, 2000, at Butler County Care Facility in Hamilton, Ohio.

Surviving are a daughter, Kathy Mills of Oxford, Ohio; four sons, Rob, Tom, Mike and Jim, all of Ohio; two sisters, Thelma Phillips of Ventura, Calif., and Wilma Hesson of Ann Arbor, Mich.; two brothers, Ralph Clark of Boonville and Paul Clark of Gentryville; four grandchildren, Hannah and Evelyn Mills and Chris and Tom Johnson.

Graveside services 11 a.m. today at Garden of Memory cemetery. Fuller Funeral Home Dale Chapel is handling arrangements.

Dorothy Williams

VINCENNES — Dorothy A. Williams, 80, died Monday, Sept. 18, 2000, at Good Samaritan Hospital.

She was a member of St. John Catholic Church, St. Thomas Altar Society and was an active member of the senior citizens organization.

Surviving are her husband of 62 years, Francis; four daughters, Sister Mary Francis of Evansville, Helen Hoffman of Olney, Ill., Mary Ann Traylor of Vincennes and Sally Jane Maiklin of Newton Falls, Ohio; eight brothers, Emil “Sam, ” William L. and David A., all of Vincennes, John T. of Sullivan, James J. of Rollinsford, N.H., Lawrence E. of Rockville, Charles A. of Bloomington, Ill., and Paul Mike of Columbus; six sisters, Sister Mary Jude Bouvy of Ferdinand, Helen Claycomb, Phyllis Morgan, Edith Williams and Lillian Spillman, all of Vincennes, and Jane Quarterman of Phoenix; a brother, Ralph Bouvy of Vincennes; 31 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. John Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Calvary cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Duesterberg-Fredrick Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the church building fund or Sisters of St. Benedict.

Mary Redman

MOUNT VERNON — Mary Ann Redman, 74, died Monday, Sept. 18, 2000, at her home of cancer.

She retired in 1987 after 28 years with the Mount Vernon School District. She had been assistant to the superintendent of schools.

She was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ and the Owen Dunn American Legion Auxiliary.

Surviving are two sons, Roger A. and Gary W., both of Mount Vernon; and six grandchildren, Aaron, Amanada, Rachael, Josh, Jace and Jevin Redman.

Her husband, Malvern, died in 1999.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Boone Funeral Home Mount Vernon Chapel, with burial in Bellefontaine cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the church or the Mount Vernon High School athletics program.

Alphonse Sermersheim

JASPER — Alphonse C. “Shim” Sermersheim, 89, died Monday, Sept. 18, 2000, at Jasper Memorial Hospital.

He was the founder and former president of S.S.&S.; Manufacturing in Evansville and a founding member, director and executive vice president of Kimball International. He had been the director of Springs Valley Bank & Trust. He retired in 1976.

He was a World War II veteran and member of the American Legion Post 147. He was a member of Knights of Columbus.

Surviving are his wife, Jean; two daughters, Jane Hackman of Indianapolis and Shirley Lewis of Scottsdale, Ariz.; a son, Pete of Jasper; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Precious Blood Catholic Church, with entombment in Fairview cemetery, with military rites.

Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Becher & Kluesner Downtown Chapel.
