Odessa Phillips
Odessa A. Phillips, 75, of Newburgh, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at St. Mary’s Medical Center of cancer.
Surviving are a daughter, Jean Bivins of Newburgh; a son, William Anthony “Tony” of Henderson, Ky.; a brother, Walter Jordan II of Indianapolis; five grandchildren, Lori Hargis, Bradley Phillips, Christi Fellows, Angie Turner and Amy Guest; eight great-grandchildren; and nieces who helped cared for her, Lana Murphy and Lila Martin, both of Newburgh.
Her husband of 42 years, William L., died in 1983.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Alexander Newburgh Chapel, the Rev. Patrick Kron officiating, with burial in Rose Hill cemetery in Newburgh.
Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today and from noon to service time at the funeral chapel.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Mary Mercer
Mary Jane “Janie” (Garrison) Mercer, 66, of Evansville, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, at Deaconess Hospital of cancer.
She retired from Gencorp Polymer Products in 1994 after 15 years.
She was a member of the Women in Construction Bowling Team.
Surviving are five daughters, Sheri A. Russell of Chandler, Ind., Debbie L. Berkley of Newburgh and Crystal D. Mercer and Cindy L. and Carol I. Smith, all of Evansville; six grandchildren, Freddy Martin Jr. and Alyssa Dawn Wilkerson, Brian Alan Smith-Wharton, Tabbatha Lynn Smith and Lauren Renee and Corey Matthew Berkley.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Browning Funeral Home, the Rev. Donald W. Bernhardt officiating, with burial in Park Lawn cemetery.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the YMCA.
Ronald Mueller
Ronald James Mueller, 86, of Evansville, died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, at Good Samaritan Home.
He worked in the maintenance department at Mead Johnson for 16 years and owned and operated an excavating business for 45 years.
He developed two neighborhoods, Marlene Drive in Vanderburgh County and Mueller Manner in St. Philip, Ind.
He was a 1933 graduate of Reitz High School, where he was captain of the undefeated state champion football.
He was a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, Scottish Rite, Hadi Shrine and a 50-year Mason. He was one of the original members of the Hadi Shrine White Horse Patrol and White Shrine of Jerusalem 2. He was a member of the West Side Nut Club, R Men’s Club of Reitz High School, Elks, Eagles and Kennel Club.
Surviving are a daughter, Marlene LaRue of Noblesville, Ind.; two grandchildren, Amy and Jim D. LaRue; and nieces and nephews.
His wife of 62 years, Ruby Fern (Spencer), preceded him in death.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, the Rev. Louis H. Dorsch officiating, with entombment in Alexander Memorial Park Mausoleum.
Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with a Masonic service at 5:45 p.m., at Alexander Funeral Home West Chapel and from noon to service time at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriner’s Hospitals for Crippled Children.
Charlene Janoski
Charlene Janoski, 85, of Evansville, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, at her home.
She was a member of Keck Avenue Baptist Church.
She enjoyed bowling.
Surviving are two daughters, Lela Word and Janice Hemp, both of Evansville; a son, Kent of Franklin, Ind.; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Her husband of 32 years, Stanley, died in 1979 and a son, Joe, died two years ago.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Alexander Funeral Home East Chapel, the Rev. Larry Schauberger officiating, with entombment in Oak Hill Mausoleum.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to service time at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association Hospice.
Oscar Zenthoefer
Oscar J. Zenthoefer, 88, of Evansville, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at Holiday Health Care Center.
He had worked for Elmer Kron Farms for 50 years.
He was a member of the St. James Catholic Church and the Darmstadt Retirees Club.
Surviving are three sisters, Victoria Rettig of Warrenton, Ind., and Hilda Ziliak and Mildred Will, both of Evansville; a brother, Charles of Warrenton; and nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. James Catholic Church, the Rev. Kenneth Betz officiating, with burial in the church cemetery.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with a memorial service at 7 p.m., at Pierre Funeral Home and from 9 a.m. to service time at the church.

Tony Browne
James Tony Browne, 82, of Evansville, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, at his home from a heart attack.
He had worked at Holsclaw Tool & Die, International Harvester and retired in 1978 after 20 years as an industrial engineer with Whirlpool Corp.
He was a World War II Army veteran, serving in Europe.
He was a member of the Terrace Park General Baptist Church for more than 40 years.
Surviving are a daughter, Ann Merchant of Columbus, Ohio; a son, Alan of Evansville; a sister, June Hayden of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a grandson, Chad Merchant; and nieces and nephews.
His wife, Eula, died in 1997.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Miller & Miller Colonial Chapel, the Revs. R. Kent Fahl and Gaylon Price officiating, with burial in Sunset Memorial Park cemetery.

Francis Vieck
Francis G. Vieck, 71, of Vincennes, Ind., father of Elizabeth Murray of Evansville, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes of cardiac pulmonary failure.
A farmer, he owned Vieck Strawberries. He was a part-time DeKalb Seed salesman.
He was a former county councilman, serving from 1983 to 1999.
He was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church for more than 50 years.
He was a member of the Elks and the Vincennes Chamber of Commerce.
He sang in the church choir, Hoosier Heritage Harmonizers and the Barber Shoppers.
He was the recipient of several community awards including the Sagamore of the Wabash, the Brute Award from the Catholic Diocese, Knox County Friends of the Extension Award, Outstanding Decker Alumni and the DeKalb Craftsman Award.
Also surviving are two daughters, Karen Laue and Victoria Vieck, both of Vincennes; three sons, Lawrence “Lonnie” and Francis II, both of Vincennes, and Thomas of Noblesville; three sisters, Margaret Primus of Martinsburg, Mo., and Pauline Carie and Bernadine Richardville, both of Vincennes; and 12 grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Knox County, with burial in St. Thomas cemetery.
Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Duesterberg-Fredrick Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the cemetery fund or the Order of St. Benedict in Ferdinand.
Rachel Barnett
Rachel Ellen (Stokes) Barnett, 69, formerly of Evansville, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, at her home in Fort Myers, Fla., of breast cancer.
She lived in Evansville for 32 years before moving to Fort Myers in 1968.
Surviving are her husband of 51 years, Jack; two brothers, John D. Stokes of Evansville and Robert C. Stokes of Fort Myers; and nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Alexander Funeral Home East Chapel, the Rev. Donald Crander officiating, with burial in Sunset Memorial Park cemetery.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Tina Dunbar
Tina Marie Dunbar, 34, of Evansville, died Monday, Jan, 24, 2000, at Deaconess Hospital of kidney failure.
She had worked for Research Systems for 15 years.
She was a graduate of North High School and a member of the Nazarene Baptist Church.
Surviving are her parents, Charles and Mary Dunbar of Evansville; four sisters, Antoinette Moore, Charlene King and Pamela Buggs, all of Evansville, and Jennie Wells of Atlanta; three brothers, Willie Shack and Joe and Tyrone Dunbar, all of Evansville; and nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Nazarene Baptist Church, the Rev. Larry Rascoe officiating, with burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
