David Tomes
David F. Tomes, 82, of Evansville, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2000, at his home. He retired in 1982 as the lead carpenter for the Evansville-Vanderburgh School Corp. He worked as a carpenter for 32 years.
He attended Eastside Pilgrim Holiness Church.
He was a World War II Army veteran and a member of the Disabled American Veterans.
Surviving are three daughters, Mary Sarver, Martha Jane Caldwell and Virginia Christine Tomes, all of Evansville; a son, David F. II of Evansville; two grandchildren, Vanessa Caldwell and Ralph Allen Caldwell Jr.
His wife, L. Virginia, died in 1998.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Browning Funeral Home, the Revs. Mike Bell and John Zeigler officiating, with burial in Locust Hill cemetery, with military rites. Friends may call from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 10 a.m. to service time at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association, VNA Hospice or to the Disabled American Veterans.
Mary Musgrave
Mary Jane Musgrave, 81, formerly of Evansville, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2000, in California.
She was a member of Holy Rosary Parish in Evansville.
Surviving are a daughter, Dr. Linda Friend of San Rafael, Calif.; a son, David Friend of Portland, Ore.; and three grandchildren, Kristi, Jenny and Jason. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Clifford Friend and David Musgrave.
Memorial services were held in Marin County, Calif.
Roy Rutland
Roy L. “Bud” Rutland, 70, formerly of Evansville, died Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2000, at his home in Destin, Fla., of cancer.
He worked for Alcoa for 20 years.
Surviving are his wife, Ruth; two daughters, Barbara Werner of Jacksonville, Fla., and Deborah Sperandio of Tampa, Fla.; two sons, Larry and Mark, both of Jacksonville; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Memorial contributions may be made to any local hospice.
Betty Majors
Betty L. Majors, 52, of Evansville, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2000, at St. Mary’s Medical Center of an apparent heart attack.
She was a former member of the Owls.
Surviving are a daughter, Ronda Eli of Indianapolis; a son, James Caldwell of Evansville; a stepsister, Sheila Vincent of Evansville; five grandchildren, Adam, Courtney and Jamie Caldwell, Ryan Evans and Drew Eli; and her uncle and caregiver, Edward Kratzer of Evansville.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Ziemer Funeral Home Central Chapel, with burial in Oak Hill cemetery.
Friends may call from 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Rita Irving
Rita (Effinger) Irving, 74, formerly of Evansville, died Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2000, in Phoenix of complications during heart surgery.
Surviving are her husband, David Kenneth “Ken”; a daughter, Debbie McKee of Phoenix; three sisters, Cecilia Froehlich of Tucson, Ariz., and Josephine Commens and Barbara Baker, both of Evansville; and five grandsons. She was preceded in death by a son, David, in 1995.
Funeral arrangements are pending in Phoenix.
Herbert Mohr
Herbert E. Mohr, 90, of Evansville, died Friday, Feb. 18, 2000, at North Park Nursing Home. He retired from Hesmer Foods after 53 years.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Darmstadt and a former coach of Little League and Pony League teams.
He was a World War II Navy veteran, serving on a transport ship.
Surviving are his wife of 35 years, Lydia; a daughter, Becky Voegel of Evansville; a son, Donald Hall of Cedar Hill, Tenn.; a sister, Leona of Louisville, Ky.; a brother, Sylvester of Evansville; six grandchildren, Steve Voegel, Kristina Wells, Elizabeth Miner, Zandra Hight and Tim and Ian Hall; and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Darmstadt, the Rev. Martin Keller officiating, with burial in Trinity Lutheran cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Alexander Funeral Home North Chapel and from 1 p.m. to service time at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Lutheran School.
Wallace Vickers
Wallace R. Vickers, 63, of Evansville, died Friday, Feb. 18, 2000, at Deaconess Hospital of congestive heart failure. He retired in 1991 from Chrysler in St. Louis.
He was a Jehovah’s Witness.
Surviving are his mother, Lula Vickers of Evansville; two sisters, Brenda Morris and Delois Sanders, both of Evansville; and nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Alexander Funeral Home East Chapel, Archie Sebree officiating, with burial in Park Lawn cemetery. Friends may call 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. to service time at the funeral home.
Auretta Hubbard
Auretta “Hetta” Hubbard, 84, of Evansville, died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2000, at her home of heart failure. She retired from the Evansville Police Department in 1968.
She was a member of Berean Bible Church, Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 73, Retired Policeman and Fireman Association and past president of Eagles Ladies Auxiliary 427.
She was a graduate of Reitz High School.
Surviving are a son, Rick of Evansville; three grandchildren, Marc Hubbard and Philip and Emilee Petitjean; and a niece and nephews. Her husband, Richard, died in 1981.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Pierre Funeral Home, the Rev. William Groeneveld officiating, with burial in Tupman cemetery and graveside services by the Fraternal Order of Police. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Diana Fox
Diana (Girdley) Fox, 65, formerly of Bedford, Ind., stepsister of Jerry D. Noble of Newburgh, died Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2000, at her home in Lawrence, Kan., of heart failure.
Also surviving are a daughter, Lisa Potts of Caldwell, Kan.; three sons, Mark of Overland Park, Kan., Tim of DesMoines, Iowa, and John of Apache Junction, Ariz.; her father and stepmother, Porter and Esther Girdley of Boonville, Ind.; a stepsister, Linda Crawford of Boonville; two brothers, Arch Girdley of Grand Junction, Colo., and Robert Girdley of Manitou, Ky.; and eight grandchildren.
Services will be today in Lawrence, Kan., with burial in Greenhill cemetery in Bedford, Ind. Day Carter Funeral Home in Bedford is handling arrangements.
John Quick
MOUNT VERNON, Ind. — John J. Quick, 93, formerly of Rockport, died Friday, Feb. 18, 2000, at Mount Vernon Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. He was self-employed as a coal miner.
Surviving are two daughters, Dorothy Isham and Josephine Yearby, both of Mount Vernon; two stepsons, Carl and Kenneth Shourds, both of Chrisney; a sister, Carrie Linne of Evansville; a brother, Raymond of Harrison, Ark.; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren. His first wife, Mary Beth, died in 1978, and his second wife, Lucille Shourds-Quick, died in 1992.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Boultinghouse Funeral Home in Rockport, with burial in Grandview cemetery. Friends may call from 10 a.m. to service time at the funeral home.
Cyril Kleaving
TELL CITY, Ind. — Cyril C. Kleaving, 83, of rural Tell City, died Friday, Feb. 18, 2000, at Perry County Memorial Hospital.
He was a farmer and helped found the Anderson Township Fire Department and the Middlefork Conservancy District, which includes Tipsaw and Celina lakes. He was a member of the National Farmers Organization and Knights of Columbus Council 1172 in Tell City.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Frieda (Dauby); four daughters, Ruth Strobel, Esther Goffinet, Mary Fortwendel and Glenda Gogel, all of Tell City; a son, Gilbert of Tell City; two brothers, Alva and Hubert, both of Tell City; 16 grandchildren, Sue Strobel Sanders, Janet Strobel, Angela Kleaving Gilliland, Theresa Kleaving Ebert, Cindy Kleaving Labhart, Mike, Danny and Nick Kleaving, Neil Fortwendel, Sara Fortwendel Harpenau, Emily Fortwendel Winter, Adam, Greg and Kristen Gogel and Glenn and Jennifer Goffinet; and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. EST Monday at St. Isidore Catholic Church, with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m., and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at Huber Funeral Home Tell City Chapel.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Isidore Catholic Church cemetery or to the Institute of Rural America, a subsidiary of the National Farmers Organization.
Nancy Foncannon
VINCENNES, Ind. — Nancy S. Foncannon, 70, died Friday, Feb. 18, 2000, at her home under hospice care.
She served as an officer on the Old Northwest Corp. board, the Vincennes cemetery board, a former board member of the United Way and currently served on the Knox County Health Board.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church and its Homebuilders Class and was active in fund-raisers for local charities. She was also a member of the Vincennes Lincoln Foundation and the Vincennes University Foundation. She was a graduate of the Indiana University School of Business, president of Chi Omega sorority in 1951 and served as president of Tri Kappa in Vincennes.
Surviving are her husband, Horace A. Jr.; a daughter, Lisa F. Kilmartin of Jamestown, N.Y.; a son, Robert of Evansville; a brother, Dan Stevenson of Santa Monica, Calif.; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. EST Monday at Goodwin Funeral Home, with burial in Memorial Park cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lincoln Trail Hospice.
Olivia Schmitt
BOONVILLE, Ind. — Olivia J. Schmitt, 80, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2000, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Evansville.
She worked at Fendrich Cigar Co. and Servel Inc. and retired from Uniseal.
She was a member of St. Clement Catholic Church, the Ladies Guild of the church and Warrick County Senior Citizens.
Surviving are a daughter, Rebecca Adams of Newburgh; four sons, Robert of Summit, Mo., John and Michael, both of Boonville, and Paul of Carmel; a sister, Matilda Rexing of Chandler; a brother, Victor Schenk of Evansville; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Her husband, Raymond, died in 1983.
Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday at Bradley Colonial Chapel, continuing at 10 a.m. at St. Clement Catholic Church, with burial in St. Francis cemetery in Poseyville. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 8 a.m. to service time at the funeral home.
