V. Jeff Moore
PRINCETON, Ind. — V. Jeff Moore, 50, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2000, at Gibson General Hospital of a heart attack.
He was the CED Youth Educator of Purdue University Extension in Gibson County.
He was a graduate of Linton-Stockton High School and had been active in track and cross country. He was a graduate of Oakland City University where he ran track and cross county.
He was active with 4-H at the Gibson County Fair.
He was a member of the Christian Fellowship Church in Evansville.
Surviving are his wife, Roxann of Francisco; a stepdaughter, Christina Wornica of Francisco; two sons, Austin of Tavares, Fla., and Landon of Rockport; two stepsons, Shawn Hampton of Washington state, and Daniel Hampton of Francisco; his mother, Juanita LeCocq of Linton; two stepgrandchildren, Natashia and Hope Wornica of Francisco; and a niece.
Services will be at 2 p.m. EST Friday at the Baptist Fellowship Church in Linton, with burial in Fairview cemetery in Linton.
Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. CST today at Colvin Funeral Home and from noon to service time at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Gibson County 4-H Fund.
Ruth Van Note
TELL CITY, Ind. — Ruth Ann Van Note, 90, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, at Owensboro Mercy Health Systems.
She was a member of the Lilly Dale Church of Christ in Gatchel.
She was a award winning quiltmaker and designed doilies and afghans.
Surviving are a daughter, Buellah Hill of Phoenix, ; two sons, Curtis B. of Colfax, Ill., and Paul W. of Owensboro, Ky.; 12 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. EST Friday at Huber Funeral Home Tell City Chapel, with graveside services at 2 p.m. EST Saturday in Riverside cemetery in Saybrook, Ill.
Friends may call from2 to 8 p.m. today and from 11 a.m. to service time Friday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the church or the Owensboro Area Ostomy Association.
Mildred Gates
TELL CITY, Ind. — Mildred “Mitz” Gates, 78, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, at Perry County Memorial Hospital.
She had been a clerk for the Tell City Water Department.
She was a member of the Evangelical United Church of Christ, American Legion Post 213 Ladies Auxiliary and Swiss Miss Homemakers Club.
Surviving are a daughter, Christine Gates of Tell City; and two sisters, Ruth Weatherholt of Rockport and Blanche Waitman of Tell City.
Her husband, John W., and a daughter, Carol, preceded her in death.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Zoercher-Gillick Funeral Home, with burial in Greenwood cemetery.

Ann Louise Arnold
Culver teacher was was feted for her work
Former Culver Elementary School teacher Ann Louise Arnold drew attention for her efforts to instill positive behavior in students.
Arnold, 47, died at home on Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, after a lengthy illness with pancreatic cancer.
Friend and fellow teacher Lorinda Taylor stayed close to Arnold throughout her illness.
“You couldn't find a finer person on earth, ” she said. “Her motto was ‘You don't ever use that word ‘can't.’”
Arnold taught for more than 25 years, starting at the Carver Day Care Center.
A native of Tupelo, Miss., and a graduate of Mississippi State University, Arnold moved to the Tri-State after repeated visits to an older sister who lived in Morganfield, Ky.
She taught reading, first grade and transitional first grade at Culver.
Arnold founded the Culver Drill Team, the only one of its kind in Vanderburgh County, to help instill discipline and teamwork in students there.
Another of her projects, to teach students good manners, garnered media coverage when she arranged for a limousine to take children to a fine restaurant, where they could show off what they learned.
Among her awards were the 1996 Educator of the Year award from the Black Women’s Task Force and Outstanding Educator of the Year from the University of Evansville.
Her husband, Lewis, recalled that nationally-known Chicago educator Marva Collins presented one of the awards, and that his wife recently received a card from Collins.
“People talk about angels here on earth — she was one of them. It seemed like everybody knew her. Kids remembered her from school. They would see her and yell ‘Hi, Mrs. Arnold, ’” he said.
“She had more friends than people I even know. She had six sisters and whenever they argued she was the one who made up between all of them.”
Taylor agreed. “She was a very positive upbeat person, someone you would want to be around. Never once through this ordeal did she complain.”
Arnold a member of New Hope Baptist Church.
Also surviving are two daughters, Andreka and Ashley Crawley, both of Evansville; a son, Courtney of Evansville; four sisters, Odessia Riley of St. Louis, Clytee Kirk and Dorothy Collier, both of Verona, Miss., and Delores Lynk of Morganfield.; five brothers, Howard and James Shackelford, both of Clinton Township, Mich., Joe Shackelford of Detroit, John Shackelford of Roseville, Mich., and Donald of Mount Clemons, Mich.; and nieces and nephews.
Services will be at noon Saturday at New Hope Baptist Church, the Revs. W.R. Brown Sr. and Jr. officiating, with burial in Oak Hill cemetery.
Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday at Mason Bros. Memorial Chapel and from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday for a wake service at the church.
Gertrude Kerr
Gertrude Kerr, 93, of Evansville, died Thursday, March 2, 2000, at the McCurdy Healthcare Center.
She retired as an Evansville Vanderburgh School Corp. teacher and was a member of the Indiana and National Retired Teacher’s Association.
She received her bachelor’s of science degree from Evansville College and her master’s degree in education from Indiana University.
She was a member of the Zoar United Church of Christ, Tabitha Sewing Circle, Retired Saints and Women’s Guild.
She was a member of the Vanderburgh Humane Society and National Wildlife Federation.
She had served as choir director at St. Michael and Angels Episcopal Churches and as lifeguard at the old Boehme Camp Hospital Pool.
She enjoyed horseback riding, tennis and canoeing.
Surviving are an adopted sister, Rosemary Carr; a nephew, David L. Jones of Newburgh who cared for her and a godchild who cared for her, Paulette Winchell of Newburgh.
Her husband, Anson, preceded her in death.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Zoar United Church of Christ, the Rev. Thomas J. Ressler officiating, with burial in the church cemetery.
Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday at Alexander Funeral Home West Chapel and from 1 p.m. to service time at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to the church.
Benjamin Garrett
Benjamin F. Garrett, 92, of Evansville, died Wednesday, March 1, 2000, at Deaconess Hospital.
He had been a coal miner in Kentucky, retired from Chrysler Corp. in Evansville as a boiler maker and from the Evansville State Hospital as the boilerroom foreman.
He hauled coal in Evansville. and during World War II worked at the Evansville Ship Yards building LSTs.
He was a member of the Terrace Parke General Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Rena (Steele); a daughter, Janet Hudson of Evansville; a son, Stanley of Evansville; four grandchildren, Laura Black, Tammy and Terry Garrett and Travis Hudson; eight great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
A son, Jim, died in 1999.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Alexander Funeral Home North Chapel, the Rev. Kent Fahl officiating, with entombment in Alexander Memorial Park Mausoleum.
Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association.
Loretta Reynolds
Loretta Jean (Watkins) Reynolds, 68, formerly of Evansville, died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2000, at her home in Boulder, Colo., of a heart attack.
She had been a nurse in Evansville from 1952 to 1960.
She was a 1948 graduate of Bosse High School and a 1952 graduate of Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing.
She was active with the City on the Hill ministries in Boulder and enjoyed genealogy.
Surviving are her husband, Jerry L.; a daughter, Deborah of Longmont, Colo.; a son, Mark of Louisville; a brother, Bryant Watkins of Santa Rosa, Calif., and two grandsons.
Howe Mortuaries in Boulder handled the arrangements.
George Barnes Sr.
George William Barnes Sr., 78, of Evansville formerly of Cadiz, Ky., died Wednesday, March 1, 2000, at Brentwood Nursing Home of heart failure.
He retired after 25 years with Bailey Lumber Co. in Cadiz as a line foreman.
He was a World War II Navy veteran and a member of Bloomfield Baptist Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Bettye L. Barnes of Louisville and Kathy Radford of Clarksville, Tenn.; three sons, Clemon of Muncie, Ind., and George Jr. and Richard Sr., both of Evansville; a brother, Clarence of Muncie; 19 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.
His wife, Mary Katherine, died in 1985 and a son, Robert Curtis, preceded him in death.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Bloomfield Baptist Church in Cadiz, Ky., the Revs. Eddie Brown Sr. and Charles W. Radford officiating, with burial in the U.B.F. cemetery in Cadiz.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the church. Trinity Funeral Home in Paris, Tenn., is handling arrangements.
