Elmer Howe
TELL CITY, Ind. — Elmer L. Howe, 88, died Saturday Feb. 26, 2000, at the Perry County Memorial Hospital.
He retired in 1973, after 33 years with the Tell City Chair Co.
He enjoyed pitching horseshoes and playing euchre.
Surviving are two daughters, Shirley Stanley of Tell City and Norma Young of Chandler; three sons, Jim and Pat Howe and Bernard Lahee, all of Tell City; four sisters, Eva Peter and Dolly Rogier, both of Tell City, Ruth Miller of Greenville and Inez Goffinet of Leopold; a brother, Frank of Stockton, Calif.; 17 grandchildren, David, Jeff and Keith Lahee, Earl Young, Kathy Foley, Janet Rogier, Lisa Ettienne, Debbie Hendershot, Tina Irvin, Lynn Stebbins and Glenn, Michelle, Jason, Christopher, Kristin, Cory and Mark Howe; and 26 great-grandchildren.
His wife, Alice (Peter), preceded him in death.
Services will be at 10 a.m. EST Tuesday at St. Paul Catholic Church, with burial in St. Mary’s cemetery.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m., and from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Zoercher Gillick Funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the church.
Laura Bolin
WINSLOW, Ind. — Laura A. Bolin, 80, died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000, at Wirth Regional Hospital in Oakland City.
She was a member of the Anderson Chapel in Petersburg.
Surviving are her husband, Denver; a daughter, Nina McCandless of Winslow; seven sons, John W., Ray, Ronnie, Terry Joe and Don, all of Winslow, Robert A. of Washington, Ind., and Jack of Palo Pinto, Texas; 31 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; and 38 great-great-grandchildren.
A daughter, Judy Kay Bolin, preceded her in death.
Services will be at 2 p.m. EST Tuesday at Curtis Funeral Home, with burial in Williams cemetery in Pike County.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to service time at the funeral home.
John Riney
LOOGOOTEE, Ind. — John Bernard Riney, 88, died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000, at Daviess Community Hospital in Washington, Ind.
He retired from the Crane Navel Surface Warfare Center and he was an Army veteran.
He was a member of the St. Martin Catholic Church in Whitfield.
Surviving are a son, William of rural Loogootee; two daughters, Ila Schierenberh of Indianapolis and Jackie Mills of Buckatunna, Miss.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean (Armstrong) and a son, John Wilson.
Services will be at 10 a.m. EST Tuesday at St. Martin Catholic Church in Whitfield, with burial in the church cemetery, with military rites.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. EST today, with a prayer service at 4:30 p.m., at Titzer Funeral Home.
Jack Bate
Jack Bate, co-owner of furniture, carpet store
A man whose family name is synonymous with carpet and furniture in the Tri-State has died.
Jack Bate, 77, of Evansville, died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000, at University Hospital in Indianapolis from complications of cancer.
“He was probably one of the hardest working people of anybody I know, ” said a son, Steven Bate, of Columbus, Ohio. “He always treated everybody equally.”
Bate was president and co-owner of South 41 Furniture in Evansville for more than 30 years, said a son, Stan Bate.
The two men together owned Stan Bate’s 41 Furniture.
Stan Bate said his father was one of first furniture and carpet dealers in the country to advertise on television.
Bate came to Evansville from Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1946. Stan Bate said his father, as a boy, was one of the top salesmen for a large publications company in New York. He was also past president of the Midwest Furniture Association.
The store will be closed during the day Tuesday for the funeral. Stan Bate said because of his father’s death, and because of his own health problems with lymphoma, he expects to eventually close the business for good.
A World War II Army veteran, the elder Bate was stationed in Fort Breckenridge, Ky., and later served on the Pacific Front.
He was a 55-year member and served on the board at Adath B’nai Israel Temple and was a member of B’nai Brith.
Also surviving are another son, Gene of Carmel, Ind.; a brother, Harold of West Palm Beach, Fla.; a stepbrother, Alan Fine of Albany, N.Y.; two grandchildren, David and Elizabeth Bate, and his companion, Lois Hamburg of Evansville.
His wife, Janet, died in 1985.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Adath B’nai Israel Temple, Rabbi David Feder officiating, with burial in Rosehill cemetery in Evansville, with military rites.
Friends may call from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. today at Ziemer Funeral Home East Chapel.
Irma Baehl
Irma L. Baehl, 95, of Evansville, died Friday, Feb. 25, 2000, at Woodbridge Health and Rehabilitation Center.
She formerly worked at Fendrich Cigar Co.
She was a member of St. Theresa Catholic Church, St. Ann Altar Society, Knights of St. John Auxiliary and the church quilting club. She was a former member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Vanderburgh County.
Surviving are two daughters, Valeria Ann Spindler of Fort Branch, Ind., and Sharon A. Mills of Evansville; five sons, Doyle J. of Newburgh, Jerome A. and Bernard R., both of Haubstadt, Ind., Kenneth K. of Chrisney, Ind., and Paul L. of Evansville; two brothers, Edwin Sensmeier of Darmstadt, Ind., and Clarence Sensmeier of Evansville; 19 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Her husband, Alphonse, died in 1958.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Browning Funeral Home, continuing at 10:30 a.m. at St. Theresa Catholic Church, the St. Theresa Pastoral Team officiating, with burial in St. Joseph cemetery in Vanderburgh County.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with a memorial service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Parkinson’s Disease Research or to St. Theresa Catholic Church.
Lonnie Bowen
Lonnie E. “Gene” Bowen, 72, of Evansville, died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000, at Deaconess Hospital of respiratory failure.
He retired from the Indiana State Highway Department.
He was a member of the River Bend Association and the Owls.
Surviving are his wife of 41 years, Linda; two sons, Gary and Glen, both of Evansville; and a grandson, John Bowen.
Services and visitation will be private at Alexander Funeral Home West Chapel.
Ralph Moore
Ralph P. Moore, 93, of Evansville, died Friday, Feb. 25, 2000, at North Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
He worked at the McCurdy Hotel for 40 years as head waiter. He also worked for Old National Bank in the mailroom for 15 years.
He was a member of Alexander African Methodist Episcopal Church.
Surviving is his wife of 55 years, Virginia.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Alexander African Methodist Episcopal Church, the Rev. Rick Jackson officiating, with entombment in Locust Hill Mausoleum.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Alexander Funeral Home East Chapel and from noon to service time at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to Alexander AME Church.
Walter Gill
Walter C. Gill, 84, of Evansville, died Friday, Feb. 25, 2000, at Deaconess Hospital of cancer.
He worked as a room clerk and later as assistant manager at the former McCurdy Hotel. He retired in 1976 from Decorative Mold Co.
He was a World War II Marine Corps veteran.
Surviving are a daughter, Launita Seals of Evansville; a brother, Jimmy of Tavares, Fla.; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Juanita, in 1994, and by a son, Ronald L., in 1996.
There will be no visitation or services at Pierre Funeral Home.
Christine Crowe
Christine Annette Crowe, 39, of Evansville, died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000, at Deaconess Hospital of complications following surgery.
Surviving are a daughter, Samantha Ann Crowe of Evansville; a son, Christopher Imel of Columbus, Ind.; her parents, Barbara (Bowers) Crowe of Evansville and James W. Crowe Sr. of Killeen, Texas; three sisters, Cheryl Lynch of French Lick, Ind., Cathy Railey of Sturgis, Ky., and Patricia Crowe of Evansville; a brother, John Crowe of Mount Vernon, Ind.; a granddaughter, Brittney Imel; and nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Browning Funeral Home, the Rev.Mike Ballard officiating, with burial in Community City cemetery in Paoli, Ind.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
