Harold Walls
WASHINGTON, Ind. — Harold W. Walls, 83, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000, at Daviess Community Hospital.
He retired from the McCord Corp.
He was a member of the Trinity Gospel Tabernacle.
Surviving are his wife, Virginia; four daughters, Marilyn and Dorothy Mathis and Donna James, all of Washington, and Arvilla Thompson of Plainfield; two stepdaughters, Virginia Sams of Vincennes and Terry Sue Pickett of Peoria, Ill.; four sons, James of Boise, Idaho, Eugene of Gosport and David and Kenneth, both of Washington; two stepsons, William T. and Gary Wilson, both of Farmington, N.M.; a brother, Denver of Otwell; 28 grandchildren; nine stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and eight stepgreat-grandchildren.
His first wife, Fannie Harriett (Adams), his second wife, Virginia (Wilson), and a son, Paul, preceded him in death.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. today at Trinity Gospel Tabernacle, with burial in Oak Grove cemetery.
Friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m. today at Gill Funeral Home and from noon to service time at the church.
Jane Lewis
WASHINGTON, Ind. — Jane A. Lewis, 90, died Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, at Washington Nursing Center.
She was a member of the First Christian Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Norma Largent of Indiantown, Fla., and Carolyn Shaner of Monroe City; a son, Maurice Dean Cunningham of Washington; a sister, Wilma Fox of Brooksville, Fla.; a brother, Earl Tom Lett of Washington; 16 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Her first husband, Theodore Cunningham, died in 1953, her second husband, Raymond Lewis, died in 1964, and a son, Donald J. Cunningham, preceded her in death.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. EST Thursday at Gill Funeral Home, with burial in Oak Grove cemetery.
Friends may call from noon to service time at the funeral home.
Lloyd Gudgel
BOONVILLE, Ind. — Lloyd Gudgel, 92, died Tuesday, at St. Mary’s Warrick.
She was a member of the Main Street
United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women’s Club, Captain Jacob Warrick Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Tri Kappa.
Surviving are a daughter, Mary Del Clutter of Boonville; a son, John Edward Jr. of Littleton, Colo.; three grandchildren, Lisa Miller, Rod Clutter Jr. and John Edward Gudgel III; and seven great-grandchildren.
Her husband, John E. Sr., died in 1966.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Koehler Funeral Home Boonville Chapel, with burial in Maple Grove cemetery.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. to service time at the funeral home.

Harriett Wendholt
HUNTINGBURG, Ind. — Harriett V. Wendholt, 85, died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at her home.
She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabella and Christian Mothers.
Surviving are her husband of 62 years, Walter V.; two daughters, Julia Mihelick of Salem, S.C., and Kathryn Snowden of Jasper; a son, Gregory of Denver, Colo.; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A daughter, Carolyn Buehler, died in 1988.
Services will be at 10 a.m. EST Friday at St. Mary Catholic Church, with burial in the church cemetery.
Friends may call from 3 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Nass and Son Funeral Home, with a joint prayer and memorial service at 7 p.m.

Clay Herrell
ROCKPORT, Ind. — Clay E. Herrell, 88, died Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, at his home.
He had been an oil promoter for Shell Oil Co.
He was a member of the Hatfield United Methodist Church, the Richland Lions Club and a member of the Advisory Committee for Luce Township Trustees.
Surviving are his wife of 65 years, June Herrell of Rockport; two daughters, Anna Joyce Meece of Hatfield and Bettye June Weatherholt of Evansville; two sons, William “Bill” of Owensboro, Ky., and Dennis of Hatfield; three sisters, Mildred Halbruge of Rockport, Clata Horn of Evansville and Emilie Pickerill of Hatfield; a brother, Louie of Hatfield; nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Boultinghouse Funeral home, with burial in Ebenezer cemetery in Richland.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. to service time at the funeral home.

Frederick Eli “Fred” Althaus
Althaus gained respect as bailiff, policeman
The chief justice of Indiana said Tuesday that Fred Althaus made him a better judge.
“Fred Althaus was one of the most decent human beings I’ve ever met, ” said Indiana Supreme Court Justice Randall Shepard.
Frederick Eli “Fred” Althaus, 75, of Evansville, died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at Deaconess Hospital of cardiac arrest.
Althaus served for five years as bailiff to Shepard, when Shepard was a Vanderburgh Superior Court judge.
“He treated the thousands of people who came through our court with great courtesy. He made ours a better court and he made me a better judge, ” Shepard said.
When Shepard was tapped for the state’s high court, Althaus became bailiff to Superior Court Judge Thomas Lockyear. He worked with Lockyear for 12 years before both men retired in 1997.
Court bailiff was Althaus’ second career. He served 23 years on the Evansville Police Department before retiring in 1970.
“I had two great sources ... Fred Althaus was one, ” said Charlie Schleper, a former police beat reporter with The Evansville Press.
Schleper said that back in the 1960s the newspapers had an office in the police station. Althaus was head of the records room. “He was a good man to know.”
Althaus married
to the former June Luhring, whose family owned Luhring News Co. at 211 Main St.
Between his careers with the police department and Superior Court, Althaus worked behind the counter at the newsstand, a popular Downtown business.
Broc Jerrel said Althaus was quite a basketball player in the early 1940s.
“The first time I ever saw him was playing in a triple overtime game, ” Jerrel said.
Althaus was a senior at Central High School in 1942. Jerrel was a freshman at Bosse, but went to watch the “big game” between Central and Boonville.
“He made the shot that won the game in triple overtime from the top of the key, ” Jerrel said.
Althaus was an All-State basketball player. He was inducted into the Corridor of Champions at Roberts Stadium.
Althaus was a member of First Baptist Church for 65 years, serving as assistant treasurer. He attended the Agoga Bible Class.
He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 73, Retired Police, Fireman's Organization and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1114.
Althaus was also a member of the Evansville Kennel Club, where he served on the board of directors. He was a Kentucky Colonel and a charter member of Hamilton’s Golf Club.
He was a World War II Navy veteran.
Surviving besides his wife of 51 years are a son, Scott of Newburgh; and three grandchildren, Jason, Aaron and Ethan Althaus.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church, the Revs. Leonard Harmon and Posey Gaines officiating, with burial in Oak Hill cemetery.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Boone Funeral Home East Chapel and from 11 a.m. to service time at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contribution may be made to the church, the Evansville Rescue Mission or the American Heart Association.
H. Virginia Erickson
H. Virginia Erickson, 83, of Evansville, died Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, at Deaconess Hospital.
She had been a Stanley Home Products representative for 55 years.
She was a member and Sunday school teacher at the Keck Avenue Baptist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Karen V. Carpenter of Evansville; a brother, Donald Woolsey of Mackey, Ind.; three grandchildren, Avita Fluty, Gina Shively and Dena Hollander; eight great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
Her husband, Clarence “Tex, ” died in 1979.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Alexander Funeral Home East Chapel, the Rev. Ron Osborne officiating, with burial in Montgomery cemetery in Oakland City, Ind.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 pm. today and from 10 a.m. to service time at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer’s Association.
Flossie Hughes
Flossie Ann Hughes, 80, formerly of Evansville, died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000, in West Bloomfield, Mich.
Surviving are a daughter, Gale Brown of West Bloomfield; a son, Dan of Livonia, Mich.; a sister, Rachel Ashton of Newburgh; a brother, James T. “J.T.” Buchanan of Evansville; a half brother, Jerry Buchanan of Ohio; four grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Her husband, Jeff, died in 1987.
Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Alexander Funeral Home East Chapel, the Rev. Michael Thompson officiating, with burial in Park Lawn cemetery.
