Vernal Gehl
Vernal K. (Harstine) Gehl, 86, of Plainfield, Ind., formerly of Newburgh, died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at the Plainfield Healthcare Center.
She had been a beautician and worked at Whirlpool Corp. in Evansville as a parts buyer for 20 years, retiring in 1976.
She was a member of St. Susanna’s Catholic Church in Plainfield and former member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Newburgh.
Surviving are a son, Robert L. Detty of Monrovia, Ind.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Her husband, Joseph Roscoe, preceded her in death.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Mount Calvary cemetery in Vincennes, Ind.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Carlisle & Son Funeral Chapel in Mooresville, Ind., with a prayer service at 7 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
Jerome Roser
Jerome E. Roser, 62, of Evansville, died Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, at Westpark Rehabilitation Center. He suffered with respiratory problems.
Surviving are two sons, Thomas and Philip, both of Evansville; a brother, John E. of Evansville; five grandchildren, Amanda Kissel, Tabitha, Brandon and Krystal Roser and Christina Lawson; and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Alexander Memorial Park Chapel, with burial in Sunset Memorial Park cemetery.
Friends may call from noon to service time at the chapel.
Charles Chapman
Charles R. Chapman, 73, of Evansville, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, as the result of a heart attack at Deaconess Hospital.
He retired from Strouse’s.
He was a Korean War Army veteran and a former member of the Song Fellows Barber Shop Quartet.
Surviving is his son, Richard of Evansville.
His wife, Nancy, died in 1990.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Browning Funeral Home, the Rev. Glen Flowers officiating, with burial in Sunset Memorial Park cemetery.

Oscar Detroy Jr.
Oscar Paul Detroy Jr., 67, of Evansville, died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, from a pulmonary embolus at Pine Haven Nursing Home.
He was a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Evansville.
Surviving are four sisters, Dorothy Kuhlenschmidt of Cape Coral, Fla., Helen Parker, Mildred Esparza, and Pauline Reutter, all of Evansville; and nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Alexander Memorial Park Chapel, the Rev. Louis H. Dorsch officiating, with burial in Alexander Memorial Park.
Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday at Alexander Funeral Home West Chapel and from 9 a.m. to service time at Alexander Memorial Park Chapel.

Carolyn Melloy
Carolyn S. (Arbary) Melloy, 52, of Evansville, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, from complications of an aneurysm at CORE Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
She had attended Vann Avenue Baptist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Dawn Lindsey Miller of Evansville; two sisters, Norma Roy of Evansville and Shirley Halverson of California; two brothers, Kenneth and Ronald Arbary, both of Evansville; four grandchildren, Carolyn and Brandie Miller and Mitchell and Amber Scott; a brother-in-law who was her caregiver, Arval Roy; and nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Park Lawn Mausoleum Chapel, the Rev. David Schulz Jr. officiating, with burial in Park Lawn cemetery.

Wilma Howell
VINCENNES, Ind. — Wilma Jean Howell, 62, died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, of cardiopulmonary failure at her home.
She was a housekeeper at Crestview Nursing Home.
Surviving are three daughters, Linda Word of Lyons and Rose Wright and Kathren Howell, both of Pinkstaff, Ill.; a sister, Bea Simonson of Washington; three brothers, Johnny Tislow of Vincennes and Bud and Robert Tislow of Bicknell; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Her husband, Paul, died in 1976.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today in Memorial Park cemetery.

James Mattingly
MOUNT VERNON, Ind. — James H. Mattingly, 85, died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, of cancer at Deaconess Hospital.
He had owned the Idlewild Cafe for 30 years.
He was a member of the Eagles and Moose, both of Mount Vernon.
Surviving are his wife, Helen Russell; two daughters, Brenda Henderson of New Harmony and Wanda Mattingly of Mount Vernon; a stepdaughter, Sue Adams of Mount Vernon; a stepson, Russell Burnett of Mount Vernon; a sister, Dorothy Farrar of Greenwood; two brothers, Harry of Shelbyville and Robert of Jacksonville, Ark.; five grandchildren, Todd and Troy Burnett, Bruce and Anthony Hamilton and Chris Adams; and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Norvell Funeral Home, with burial in Bellefontaine cemetery.

Dennis Woods
MOUNT VERNON, Ind. — Dennis M. “Woody” Woods, 55, died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, of cancer at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville.
He was a retired laborer and member of the Owen Dunn American Legion Post 5.
Surviving are a daughter, Natalie Osborne of Mount Vernon; two sons, Kevin of Henderson, Ky., and Kelly of Robards, Ky.; a sister, Jana York of Mount Vernon; a brother, Jerry L. of Evansville; seven grandchildren, Trisha, Frehley, Derek, Autumn and Sarah Woods, Hannah Bruce and Collin Osborne.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Norvell Funeral Home, with burial in Bellefontaine cemetery.

Jackie Dearing
FERDINAND, Ind. — Jackie “Jack” L. Dearing, 72, died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, of a heart attack at the St. Joseph’s Hospital in Huntingburg.
He retired from the Denver Coca-Cola Bottling Co.
He was a World War II Navy veteran.
He was a member of the Ferdinand American Legion, Huntingburg Veterans of Foreign Wars and Eagles.
Surviving are his wife, Marsha L.; three daughters, Brenda Velasquez of Golden, Colo., Linda Lish of Jasper and Ginger Lanham of Florida; a son, Vince of Huntingburg; five sisters, Delores Tanner, Joanne Blocker, Janice Oser and Nancy Meyer, all of Huntingburg, and Jeanne Ingle of Beech Grove; a brother, Ralph of Huntingburg; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Nass & Son Funeral Home Huntingburg Chapel, with burial in Fairmount cemetery, with military rites.

Mary Clem
PRINCETON, Ind. — Mary Ruth Clem, 80, died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at Gibson General Hospital.
She had worked in child care. She and her husband were foster parents.
Surviving are a son, H. Eldon; two sisters, Lucille Hallam of Owensville and Margaret Hobson of Merrillville; a grandson, Daniel Clem; and nieces and nephews.
Her husband, Eldon, died in 1976.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Mount Tabor cemetery, with meeting at the Colvin Funeral Home at 9:30 a.m. for a procession to the cemetery.

William Spicer Jr.
CHANDLER, Ind. — William L. “Bill” Spicer Jr., 72, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at St. Mary’s Warrick from coronary pulmonary disease.
He retired from Whirlpool Corp. in 1991 after 39 years. He had worked at Servel and was a member of Local 808 in Evansville.
He was an Army veteran.
Surviving are a sister, Verona E. Spicer of Chandler; and a niece.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Koehler Funeral Home Perigo Chapel, with burial in Oak Hill cemetery in Evansville, with military rites.
