Born in Steuben County, the former postmistress of Helmer was a homemaker, pianist and violinist. She played first violin in the Steuben County Orchestra. She was preceded in death by her husband, Merritt L. Surviving are a daughter, Suzanne Stabler of Bluffton; two sons, Roger of Vermilion, Ohio, and Jeffery of Indianapolis; a brother, Stanley Leas of Eufala, Okla.; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Born in Hartford City, he worked in the concrete business in Hartford City for 32 years, formerly owned Townes B&E; Package Store for 15 years and retired in 2000 as a superintendent from Indiana Department of Transportation after 10 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Surviving are his wife, Lilah L.; a daughter, Paula K. Hatton of Hartford City; two sons, Brett E. and Kirk A., both of Hartford City; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
