Homer Harper, funeral home owner, dies at 83
To this day, east Allen County residents approach the children of Homer H. Harper to tell them about the way he made a difficult part in their lives a little easier.
The owner of the E. Harper & Son Funeral Home in New Haven, Harper died Friday at the Village of Heritage. He was 83.
“The number of people who would stop us and relate stories to us about how dad had helped them through a tough time, I think that’s one of the most rewarding things for us as children, ” said Mitch Harper, Harper’s son.
A third-generation funeral director, Harper also began the funeral home’s ambulance service, which served the community until 1980, Mitch Harper said.
“He was serving his community and I think he had a strong sense of that duty. He saw people in all sorts of circumstances, and I think we all grew up witnessing his compassion for the people in Allen County, ” Mitch Harper said.
That is also why Harper liked being in the funeral business, his son said.
“He had a very deep love for the New Haven community and east Allen (county) and he was extraordinarily well-known by the people he had served, ” Mitch Harper said.
Harper also served his country.
An ensign in the U.S. Navy during World War II, Harper served in the Pacific after training at DePaul and Northwestern universities, his son said.

Ex-WOWO staffer Curt Miller dies after public fight with cancer
WIBC radio news anchor and reporter Curt Miller has died after a nine-month struggle with cancer that he shared with central Indiana radio listeners. He was 52.
Miller died at his home Monday, station officials said.
He was diagnosed with advanced pancreatic cancer in early January, but returned to work through March.
Jon Quick, the station’s director of operations, said Miller was moved to record a series of interviews that were broadcast on WIBC during the spring and summer about his illness, impending death and religious faith.
“His faith in God, his faith in humanity, his faith in his profession, ” he said.
Miller was news director at WOWO in Fort Wayne in the 1990s.
He maintained his positive outlook even though he knew the end was nearing, news director Sharon Alseth said.
“He was doing crossword puzzles to the end. And he wouldn’t go to the back of the book for the answers, ” she said. “He kept a dictionary with him and looked stuff up. He said, ’At least I’ll get educated.'”
Miller was communications director for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Indianapolis from 1994 to 2002. He also recently completed a book about the Civil War.
“Curt represented all that is right with journalism today, ” said Randy Wheeler, news director at radio station WIKY of Evansville. “He was a studious man of integrity, who had a positive spirit even when the truths he was dealing with were sometimes negative.”
Miller is survived by his wife, Cheryl, two children, four stepchildren and six grandchildren. Funeral services were pending.
