May V. Sutherlin

May V. Sutherlin, 92, of Odessa, Fla., and formerly of Terre Haute died at 9:50 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005. She retired as a cook for Indiana State University. She was born Sept. 10, 1912, in Terre Haute to John Ziegler and Pearl Keller Ziegler. Her husband, Earl Sutherlin, preceded her in death Oct. 2, 1974. Survivors include two sisters, Nell Felling of Terre Haute and Jean Friedline of South Bend; a special nephew and his wife, John and Nancy Kimmel of Odessa; and other nieces and nephews. She also was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Earlene Sutherlin; one sister, Ruth Kimmel; and one brother, James Ziegler. She was a 50-year member of Twelve Points Order of Eastern Star. Funeral services are 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Callahan Funeral Home, 2425 Wabash Ave., with the Rev. Donald Mullen officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 12:30 p.m. to services Saturday in the funeral home.

Virgil E. Sinders

SHELBURN - Virgil E. Sinders, 79, of Shelburn died at 8 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005, in his residence. He was a retired electrician. He was born Feb. 3, 1925, in Sullivan to Goldie Sinders. Survivors include his wife, Minnie Sinders; one son, Allan Sinders; one stepson, Robert Adams; five stepdaughters, Loretta Herrera, Susan Bonilla, Barbara Rush, Kay Adams and Mary Ellen Linderman; three stepsisters, Virginia Ayers, Marjorie Miller and Evelyn Phegley; one stepbrother, Jack Pierce; 19 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother; and two stepbrothers, Bob and Darrell Pierce. Services are 2 p.m. Saturday in Mattox-McHugh Chapel, with the Rev. Russell Black officiating. Burial is in Little Flock cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the Shelburn, Hymera and Sullivan American Legion Posts. Visitation is 11 a.m. to services Saturday in the funeral home.

Daniel Chironna

WEST BRIGHTON, N.Y. - Daniel Chironna, 70, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2005. He was born Nov. 14, 1934, in Staten Island, N.Y. to John Chironna Sr. and Teresa Chironna. His wife, Jeanny Chironna, preceded him in death. He is survived by his companion, Gloria Chiarello; four children, Daniel Chironna, Cathy Chironna, Michael Chironna and Jill Smieya; four brothers, Michael Chironna, Louis Chironna and Val Chironna, all of Staten Island, and Dr. John Chironna Jr. and his wife Mildred of Terre Haute; five grandchildren, Angelo, Danielle, Taylor, Gianna and Luke; and several nieces and nephews. He also was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Frank Chironna. He was employed as a contractor during his life and was a veteran of the Korean War. Funeral services are 9 a.m. Saturday in Olivet Presbyterian Church in West Brighton, with the Rev. Lee McCallum officiating. Entombment is in Moravian cemetery in Staten Island. Visitation is 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today in Harmon Funeral Home in West Brighton. Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 S. 25th St., is assisting locally.

Sgt. Kyle William Childress

Sgt. Kyle William Childress, 29, of Terre Haute died Friday, Jan. 21, 2005, in Balad, Iraq, from wounds suffered in a firefight near Ad Duluiyah, Iraq, as he served his country with the 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry, 1st Infantry Division, Schweinfurt, Germany. He was born Dec. 20, 1975, in Terre Haute to Keith Childress and Nancy Allen Childress. Survivors include his father, of Terre Haute; his mother, Nancy Allen Knight and her husband Darrel of Terre Haute; two brothers, Jason C. Childress of Terre Haute and Paul Jeffrey Childress of Indianapolis; one sister, Gretta Childress of Harmony; maternal grandmother, Wilma Allen of Terre Haute; two nephews, Mason and Joshua Childress; his fiancee', Kirsten Beck of Germany; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was a 1994 graduate of Terre Haute South High School, where he played varsity football. He entered the U.S. Army in September of 1999, and was a veteran of the Kosovo conflict. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 972. He loved fishing and rock music, and he will always be loved and missed by all. Funeral services are 1 p.m. Tuesday in DeBaun Springhill Chapel. Burial is in Dunham cemetery, with military honors performed by the Caisson Unit of Fort Knox, Ky. Visitation is 2 to 8 p.m. Monday in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the planned Iraqi Freedom monument at the Vigo County Veterans Memorial Plaza, in care of Wabash Valley Community Foundation, 2901 Ohio Blvd., Terre Haute, IN 47803.

Georgia Rankin Cole

Georgia Rankin Cole, 78, of Jeffersonville and formerly of Terre Haute died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2005, in Riverbend Assisted Living in Jeffersonville. She was an instructional material coordinator and librarian for the Vigo County School Corp. She was born May 27, 1926, in Lincoln County, Ky., to John Wesley Rankin and Katherine Holtzclaw Rankin. Survivors include her husband, Herman Cole Jr. of Jeffersonville; one daughter, Holly R. Cole of Jeffersonville; two brothers, Russell Rankin of Crestview Hill, Ky., and John Lee Rankin of Lancaster, Ky.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents. She was an avid genealogist, a member of Daughters of the American Revolution and past member of the Filson Historical Society in Louisville, Ky. Funeral services are 10 a.m. today in Coots Funeral Home in Jeffersonville. Burial is in Barnes cemetery in Nabb. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to the Rauch Center in New Albany.

Kenneth Melvin Davis

Kenneth Melvin Davis, 73, of Terre Haute died Friday, Jan. 28, 2005, in his residence. He was a retired self-employed painting contractor. He was born Dec. 11, 1931, in Illinois. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Florence; one daughter, Lisa Davis of Indianapolis; one son, Jeff Davis of Terre Haute; two stepdaughters and their husbands, Dianna and Scott Whitley of Terre Haute and Karen & Dennis Morris of Brazil; seven grandchildren, Bryan Ousky, Danielle Morris, Christopher Morris, Justin Whitley, Tracy Morris, Jeremy Whitley and Katie Whitley; one sister, Becky DeJesus of Clayton; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers; one sister; and one stepdaughter, Kathy Ousky. He was a 50-year member of Christ Lutheran Church, graduated from Gertsmeyer High School in 1956 and was a former member of the Elks and the American Legion. He was a 32nd degree Mason and served with the U.S. Air Force. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, flying and the Air Force. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Monday in Christ Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Larry Reck officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park, with Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 972 conducting military graveside rites. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Thomas Funeral Home and 9 a.m. to services Monday in the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Christ Lutheran Church.

Sister Alma Marie (Jennie) Earus

Sister Alma Marie (Jennie) Earus of St. Mary-of-the-Woods, died at 8:45 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2005, in Mother Theodore Hall in St. Mary-of-the-Woods. She was an educator and taught in schools staffed by the Sisters of Providence in Indiana, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Hampshire and the District of Columbia. She spent 31 years of her 62 years as a Sister of Providence teaching in primary grades. She served in the St. Mary-of-the-Woods infirmary from 1979-1981 as a nurses aide. The former Jennie Earus was born July 31, 1923, in Northampton, Mass., to Walter Earus and Mary Subocz Earus. She attended Maple Street, Easthampton/Carter Grade School in Chelsea, Mass., graduated from Chelsea High School/St. Rose in Chelsea and received her bachelor's degree in education from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College. She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence on July 20, 1942, professed First Vows Jan. 23, 1945, and Final Vows Jan. 23, 1950. There are no immediate survivors. Mass of the Christian Burial is 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, St. Mary-of-the-Woods, with the Rev. Daniel R. Hopcus officiating. Burial is in the cemetery of the Sisters of Providence, St. Mary-of-the-Woods. Wake is 2:30 p.m. Monday in the church, with wake service at 4:30 p.m. Callahan Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.

Marcella Mae Taylor

Marcella Mae Taylor, 80, of Terre Haute died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005, in her residence. She was a retired telephone operator, and had worked for Illinois Bell in Chicago for many years. She was born June 12, 1924, in Lewis to Joe Taylor and Tessa Mae Sharpe Taylor. She is survived by two brothers, Tom Taylor of Rosedale and Melvin Taylor of Terre Haute; four sisters, Monclova Doss of Rosedale, Margaret Taylor of Lebanon, Milna Wenker of Springfield, Ill., and Mary Geiger of Palm Coast, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Leo Taylor; and three sisters; Maxine Taylor, Mildred Richardson, and Marlene Vickers. She was a member of St Patrick's Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial is 11:30 a.m. Monday in St. Patrick's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Norbert Kieferle officiating. Burial is in Mount Olive cemetery. Visitation is 9 a.m. to services Monday in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th St.

Mary Dean Holloway Williamson

Mary Dean Holloway Williamson, 80, of Cleveland, and formerly of Terre Haute went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2005, in Cleveland. She was introduced to the Lord at an early age and she continued to walk with her Father until He called her home. She loved the Lord and she loved to sing his praises. Her favorite singer was Mahalia Jackson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bishop Williamson; sister, Norma Jean Sholar; and brothers; Curtis L. Isabell and Robert "Pee-Wee" L. Isabell. She was a praying woman, and many have said that she could pray in her sleep. She was a strong woman, and even through her trials and tribulations she remained strong in her faith and believed the Lord would make a way...somehow. She leaves to cherish her memory her son, Charles Holloway and his wife Angela of Cleveland; brother, James Isabell and his wife Diane of Chicago; mother-in-law, Lavenia Holston; niece, Deborah Isabell; four grandchildren, Lavenia, Angie, Charles Jr. and Melissia; three great-grandchildren, all of Cleveland; nephew, Bishop Quentin Isabell of Terre Haute; niece, Ricky Williams of Colorado Spring, Colo.; and a host of family and friends too many to mention. Funeral services are 2:30 p.m. today in True Gospel Tabernacle Church, with Bishop Quentin Isabell officiating. Burial follows in Grandview cemetery. Russell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Billy Durance Stines

SHELBURN - Billy Durance Stines, 57, of Shelburn died at 9:32 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005, in Sullivan County Community Hospital. He was a security officer for Indiana State University and worked 14 years at the Federal Bureau of Prisons. He was born March 16, 1947, in Sullivan to Durance Stines and Elsie Pirtle Stines. Survivors include his wife, Cheryl Darlene Hunter Stines of Shelburn, whom he married June 2, 1965; three sons, Billy Stines Jr. of Hymera and Brett Stines and Brian Stines, both of Logansport; one daughter, Kimberly Smith and her husband Jeff of Carlisle; one stepson, Troy Cowden of Hymera; two sisters, Carol Harris of Pimento and Connie Alumbaugh of Hymera; nine grandchildren, Jessica Wright, Bethany Wright, Timothy Stines, Elisha Stines, Cody Smith, Billy Stines III, Josie Stines, Huston Cowden and Jayden Cowden; two great-grandchildren, Gavyn Wright and the light of his life, Gabriella Wright; and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents. He was a 1965 graduate of Hymera High School, a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War and a member of the American Legion. We will forever remember you, Pappy, thanks for everything, and love from the "Hole in the Wall Gang." Private graveside services are 2 p.m. today in the Knights of Pythias cemetery in Hymera, with the Rev. James Quick and Mother Thompson officiating. The Sullivan, Shelburn and Hymera American Legions will conduct military graveside rites. Holmes Memorial Chapel in Sullivan is in charge of arrangements.
