Mary Eleanor Cutright

Mary Eleanor Cutright, 76, of Terre Haute died at 8:35 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital. She was born Nov. 28, 1928, in Rosehill, Ill., to Charles Newlin and Velva Lambert Newlin. Her husband, William Howard Cutright, died in 1990. Survivors include two sons, Howard Cutright and his wife Linda, and Neal Cutright; one daughter, Brenda Howard and her husband Tom; two brothers, Ronald Newlin and Maurice Newlin; four sisters, Mildred Sidenbender, Tabitha Silvers, Imogene Huddlestun and Dorothy Wilson; three sisters-in-law, Nina Danforth, Norma Kember and Betty Higgs; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She also was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Sandra Cutright; one brother, Glenn Newlin; one sister-in-law, Edna McElravey; and one brother-in-law, Joe Cutright. She was a member of Union Baptist Church in Terre Haute and Plum Grove Church in Illinois. Services are 11 a.m. CST Tuesday in Barkley Funeral Home in Greenup, Ill., with Marvin Oakley officiating. Burial is in Harmony cemetery in Greenup. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Monday in Barkley Funeral Home. DeBaun Funeral Homes assisted with local arrangements.

Harold William Nickless

Harold William Nickless, 80, of Asheville, N.C., and formerly of Terre Haute, died at 2:15 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005, at Mission Memorial Hospital. A longtime Terre Haute resident, "Nick" was an employee and later owner of Herb Davis's Barber Shop on North Seventh Street, and owner of Nick's Barber Shop on Lafayette Avenue. He was born Nov. 23, 1924, in Midland to Guy Nickless and Ola Clark Nickless. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Antoniette Baima Nickless; two daughters and their husbands, Drs. Pamela J. Nickless and Gregg Kormanik of Asheville, N.C., and Dr. Karen Nickless and Stephen Rothrock of Charleston, S.C.; two sisters-in-law, Mary Martha Nickless of Terre Haute, and Margaret Davis of Long Beach, Calif.; two nieces, Jean Ochs of Paris, Ill., and Jill Marie Landis and her husband Steve, of Kauai, Hawaii; three nephews, John G. Nickless and his wife Ruth of Shelburn, Jeffrey Davis of Phoenix, and John Davis and his wife Jill of Long Beach; nine grandnieces and grandnephews; and four great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews. His brother, John Bruce Nickless, preceded him in death on Nov. 21, 2004. A private memorial service and scattering of ashes will be in Indiana in the spring. Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Ground, a non-profit feminist retreat ministry, P.O. Box 8512, Asheville, NC, 28814; or the Edisto Island Historic Preservation Society, 8123 Chisolm Plantation Road, Edisto Island, SC 29438. Barbara J. Shattuck

Barbara J. Shattuck, 69, of Terre Haute died at 11:31 a.m. Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, in Union Hospital. She retired from Springhill Wholesale. She was born July 9, 1935, in Linton to Ralph E. Curtis and Kathryn L. Mathot Curtis. Survivors include her husband of 52 years, Homer Shattuck; her mother; four sons, Michael Shattuck and his wife Debbie of Alpharetta, Ga., Mitchell Shattuck and his wife Cheryl, Christopher Shattuck and his wife Tonya, and Matthew Shattuck and his wife Julie, all of Terre Haute; two daughters, Kathie Swain and her husband Jack, and Carla Schoemaker and her husband Brian, all of Terre Haute; one brother, Ralph M. Curtis and his wife Charlotte of Terre Haute; two sisters, Peggy Power and her husband Carl of Sullivan, and Brenda Bourne and her husband Virgil of Gladstone, Mo.; 12 grandchildren, Shellie, Aaron, Lindsey, Katie, Emily, K.C., Kassandra, Jess, Josh, Jamie, Nate and Sean; and six great-grandchildren, Jackie, Jalen, Logan, Triston, Mia and Ember. She was preceded in death by her father. She was a wonderful seamstress and had a great love for sewing and crafts, and also loved sports. Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday in DeBaun Springhill Chapel, with Sister Mary Beth Klingel officiating. Burial is in Dugger cemetery in Dugger. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Monday. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the American Lung Association.

Dolores Lorraine Snyder

CARLISLE - Dolores Lorraine Snyder, 97, of Carlisle died at 3:25 p.m. Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, in her residence. She was a homemaker. She was born Jan. 15, 1907, in Carlisle to James M. Bowen and Minnie K. Jeter Brown. Her husband, Albert Snyder, whom she married April 12, 1925, died in 1989. Survivors include one daughter, Norma Lee Williams and her husband Emanuel "Mandy" of West Covina, Calif.; two grandchildren, Mike Williams and Janet Garcia; one great-grandchild, Autumn Williams; and nieces and nephews. She also was preceded in death by one son, James "Jimmie" Snyder; one brother, Donald Bowen; and two sisters, Maude E. Mason and Stella Jennings. She was a member of Paxton United Methodist Church. Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday in Holmes Memorial Chapel in Sullivan, with the Rev. David Cox officiating. Burial is in Carlisle Odd Fellows cemetery. Visitation is 10 a.m. until services Tuesday.

Pearl Irene Rodgers

Pearl Irene Rodgers, 78, of West Terre Haute died at 12:22 p.m. Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, in Union Hospital. She was born Feb. 1, 1926, in Vigo County to Pearl A. Burns and Bessie M. Brown Burns. Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Earl C. Rodgers, whom she married May 25, 1945, in West Terre Haute; two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda I. Shaw and Paul Shaw of West Terre Haute and Jennifer R. Beck and Bruce Beck of Fishers; a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas E. Rodgers and Lynn Rodgers of Evansville; one sister, Gertrude Mullins of Terre Haute; a sister-in-law, Gwendolyn Burns of Florida; five grandchildren, Michael P. Shaw, Douglas C. Shaw, Lauren R. Beck, Emily A. Rodgers and Matthew T. Rodgers; three step grandchildren, Aaron, Mason and Sarah Camp; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Lillian Rogers and Fern Perkins; and one brother, Homer Burns. She was a graduate of Concannon High School with the class of 1944. She attended Central Presbyterian Church and the Dresser Church. She was a loving wife and a devoted mother and grandmother. Services are 10 a.m. Monday in Fitzpatrick-Pearce Funeral Home, with the Rev. Chris Wilbur officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday and 7 a.m. to services Monday in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to Light House Mission or the Dresser Church Building Fund, with envelopes available in the funeral home.

Dorothy M. Steadman

Dorothy M. Steadman, 84, of Terre Haute died at 10 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005, in Royal Oaks Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born Nov. 19, 1920, in Vigo County to Charles F. Britton and Ella Lea Osburn Britton. Survivors include two sons, Jackie Lewis and Morris Lewis; two sisters, Johnna DeLong and Ruby Lewzader; one brother, Bill Britton; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday in Mattox-Wood Funeral Home, with the Rev. Larry Lilly officiating. Burial is in Highland Lawn cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Monday in the funeral home.

Dorothy I. Caton

SULLIVAN - Dorothy I. Caton, 90, of Sullivan died at 7:50 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005, in Sullivan County Community Hospital. She was retired from Mary Sherman Hospital. She was born Dec. 27, 1914, in Sullivan County to Thomas Curry and Bertha Houpt Curry. Her husband, Lynn Caton, preceded her in death in 1990. Survivors include one son, John Caton of Sullivan; one sister, Mary Huntworth of Farmersburg; four grandchildren, April Morgan, Lauren Grap, Michael Caton and Scott Caton; and four great-grandchildren, Peter Grap, Madeline Grap, Marina Morgan and Maris Morgan. She also was preceded in death by her parents; and one son, Thomas Caton, in 1977. She was a member of Sullivan First Christian Church and the Alpha Delphian Club. Graveside services are 10:30 a.m. Monday in Farmersburg Westlawn cemetery, with the Rev. Dale Wise officiating. There is no visitation. The family suggests that memorial donations may be made to Sullivan First Christian Church. Banks & Brust Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Lois Ann Keown

CLINTON - Lois Ann Keown, 49, of Clinton died at 10:25 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005, in Union Hospital. She was born May 3, 1955, in Mattoon, Ill., to Elmer Shutts Sr. and Marjorie Ferris Shutts. Survivors include her husband, Roger Keown of Clinton; her mother, Marjorie Shutts of Mattoon; one brother, Kenn Shutts of Shelbyville, Ill.; a sister-in-law, Barbara Shutts of Mattoon; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father; and two brothers, Elmer Shutts Jr. and George Shutts. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints of Clinton. She enjoyed baby-sitting a large number of children through the years, especially Michael Myers. Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, with President Gene Pugh and Gary Armstrong officiating. Burial is in Walnut Grove cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Frist Funeral Home and at 9:30 a.m. Monday in the church.

Holland R. 'Rick' Titus

Holland R. "Rick" Titus, 57, of Terre Haute died at 6:50 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005, in his residence after battling cancer for a year and one-half. He retired as a senior master sergeant from the 181st Tactical Fighter Group in Terre Haute after 23 years service, where he worked as a weapons loading specialist. Upon his retirement, he was reemployed by Dever Distributing, where he had previously worked from 1970-1980. He was co-owner of Titus Tavern, (the Old Spinning Wheel), since 1993. He was born July 19, 1947, in Terre Haute to Harland L. "Doc" Titus and Helen Greeson Titus. Survivors include his wife of 29 years, Anne Hoffman Titus; three daughters, Tiffany Brookins, Heather Lynch and husband Jack, and Wendy Sharp and husband William, all of Terre Haute; one brother, Tucker Titus of Clearwater, Fla.; and one sister, Jeri Titus of Terre Haute; seven grandchildren, Connor, Colton and Corie Lynch, Ricky and Brayden Brookins, and Halea Burk and Dee Dee Sharp. He was a 1965 graduate of Gerstmeyer High School and was proud of his lasting friendships from there. He was a Vietnam veteran, serving at DaNang Air Base from 1966-1967, and was quite proud of his military service. He was a life member of the Air Force Sergeant Association, life member of Lawton Byrum Post 972 Veterans of Foreign Wars, life member of Krietenstein American Legion Post 40 and Terre Haute Elks Lodge 86. He will always be remembered for his wit, humor, kindness and friendship, and he is loved not by many, but by everyone. Funeral services are 11 a.m. Saturday in Callahan Funeral Home, 2425 Wabash Avenue. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park, with military services by the 181st Tactical Fighter Group. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Class of 1965 Gerstmeyer Scholarship Fund, with envelopes available in the funeral home.

Kevin R. Nash

SHELBURN - Kevin R. Nash, 34, of Shelburn died at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5. 2005, in Shelburn. He was an operator for Black Beauty Coal Co. in the Farmersburg mine. He was born March 30, 1970, in Indianapolis to Kenneth Ray "Buck" Nash and Barbara Wilson Nash. Survivors include his wife, Angela Renee Burch Nash of Shelburn, whom he married Sept. 22, 1997; two daughters, Kelsey Rae Nash, 12, of Jasonville; and Kiva Mae Nash, 3, of Shelburn; one son, Courty Lee Alton, 9, of Shelburn; his parents, Kenneth and Barbara Nash of Shelburn; and his paternal grandmother, Norma Nash of Sullivan. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Kenneth J. Nash; maternal grandparents, Cecil and Kiva Wilson; and one aunt, Penny Krisler. Funeral services are 2 p.m. Sunday in McClanahan-Lee Funeral Home in Jasonville, with the Revs. Harold Thomas and Larry Corns officiating. Burial is in Farmersburg Westlawn cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday and until services Sunday in the funeral home.

Fannie Wadsworth Clifton

Fannie Wadsworth Clifton, 91, of Terre Haute died at 7:50 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 13, 2005, in her daughter's residence. She was a homemaker. She was born June 1, 1913, in Martin County to James L. Wadsworth and Ermaline Fisher Wadsworth. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard H. Clifton. Survivors include one son, Wayne Clifton and his wife Karen; one daughter, Rosalie Thomas and her husband Clyde; one brother, James J. Wadsworth; five grandchildren, Gary Thomas, Richard Thomas, Keith Thomas, Kim Clifton and David Clifton; six great-grandchildren, Hollie Thomas, Brian Thomas, Stephen Dietzer, Sarah Thomas, Lindsay Thomas and Lavonna Thomas; and three great-great-grandchildren, Kaylin, Rilee and Marissa. She also was preceded in death by her parents. She was a member of the Riley Sunshine Club and a former member of the Riley United Methodist Church evening circle. She attended Riley Senior Citizens Center and art classes in the Wabash Valley Senior Center. Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday in DeBaun Idaho Street Chapel, with the Rev. Aaron Wheaton officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Monday in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to VistaCare Hospice.

Alfred L. Harding

Alfred L. Harding, 93, of Evansville and formerly of Terre Haute died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2005, in the Deaconess Ohio Valley Hospice Center. He graduated from Dugger Union High School in 1928. He received his bachelor of science degree in commerce from Indiana State Teachers College in 1934, where he participated and lettered on the varsity tennis team. He served as a business teacher in the Huntingburg school system in the 1930s, and in St. Louis City Schools in the 1950s. He also served as an aircraft maintenance officer in the Admiralty Islands with the U.S. Navy in World War II, earning both World War II Victory and Asiatic Pacific Campaign medals. He was granted a master of arts degree from Indiana State University in 1958. In 1959, he returned to Indiana State Teachers College, where he served as the director of the placement bureau for nine years, completing a doctorate in higher education administration from Indiana University at Bloomington in 1968. He served on several committees that performed professional searches for superintendents on behalf of numerous public school boards throughout Indiana. During his four years as director of extended services and continuing education at ISU, he continued his close counseling relationships with students that led to his appointment by the National University Extension Association as a "Fellow of Extension". In 1972, he embraced his first love of teaching. As an associate professor of secondary education, he taught graduate and undergraduate students, published and served as an educational consultant to schools while maintaining an active role in state and national adult education affairs. In 1977, he was conferred the rank of Associate Professor Emeritus of Secondary Education by the ISU board of trustees. He was a member of the Indiana State University Alumni Association's Grand Society of Sycamores and the Sycamore I-Club. In the early 1960s, he helped establish Indiana State University's Phi Delta Kappa Professional Education Fraternity, serving as the chapter's first president. He also helped enlist volunteers for President Kennedy's Peace Corps program, and served on numerous charitable organizations in the Terre Haute area, such as The Salvation Army. He served as president of the Vigo County Retired Te Teachers Association, attended Maryland Community Church and participated in men's club events at Rea Park Golf Course. He was an avid fisherman, and especially enjoyed his time camping and fishing at Shakamak State Park near Jasonville. Most of all, he loved his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Juanita Ruth Harding; his parents, William and Blanche Harding; his sister, Lillian; and his brother, Milton. He is survived by his son, Michael and his wife Donna, of Evansville; his daughter, Ann Reel and her husband Brian of Dillsboro; and two grandchildren, Abby and Ben Reel. The family would like to thank the staff and volunteers of the Alterra Sterling House in Evansville for their love and support during his three-year stay in the facility. They would also like to thank the staff at Deaconess Ohio Valley Hospice Center for their assistance and support. Services are 1 p.m. Monday in DeBaun Springhill Chapel. Entombment is in Roselawn Mausoleum .Visitation is 11 a.m. to services Monday in the funeral home.

Neddie Lee Morris

Neddie Lee Morris, 74, of Indianapolis, and formerly of Terre Haute died Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, in Hendricks County Regional Hospital in Danville. He served 23 years in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed throughout the world. Notably, he was a crew chief with the USAFE Skyblazers Aerial Demonstration Team, retiring in 1972. He was born Dec. 15, 1930, in Terre Haute to Carl Lee Morris and Minnie Estella Inge Morris. He is survived and lovingly remembered by his son, Josephus Lee Morris and his wife Maria; his sister, Margaret Ann Green and her husband Robert; his niece and nephew, Ann Mason and Jeff Green; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. He attended Staunton High School and graduated with the class of 1948. He was active in the Academy of Model Aeronautics, where he set many model airplane speed records and was considered a pioneer of the sport. Cremation will take place, with private services later.

Julie A. Shields

Julie A. Shields, 35, of Terre Haute died at 10:15 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005, in Union Hospital, after a brief battle with cancer. She was an office assistant with Dr. Daniel Keller's office and worked for Hampton Lawn Care. She also was employed by Digital Audio Disc Corp., A.E.T., and was a driver for United Parcel Service. She also was a former patrol officer with the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Piqua, Ohio post. She was born March 31, 1969, in Greencastle to Keith G. Dorsett and Betty Shaw Dorsett. Survivors include her husband of four years, Michael L. Shields of Terre Haute; her parents of Bruceville; one sister, Carrie Harris and her husband Kevin of Fort Campbell, Ky.; one brother, Keith E. Dorsett of Ashley, Ohio; and her grandmother, Ruth Shaw. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Robert P. Shaw, and paternal grandfather and grandmother, Eugene Dorsett and Blanche Huller Dorsett. She was a 1987 graduate of North Knox High School and a 1989 graduate of Vincennes University. She served in the 181st Fighter Wing of the Terre Haute Air National Guard. She loved to travel, spend time with friends and family and quilting. A remembrance reception is later. Cremation has been scheduled. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice. Mattox-Ryan Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
