Sheri L. Leslie
Sheri L. Leslie, 44, of Terre Haute and formerly of Seelyville, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, in her residence, after fighting multiple sclerosis for many years. She was a beautician for many years and was a homemaker. She was born June 20, 1960, in Vermillion County to Robert Benson and Linda Chopson Benson. Survivors include her husband, Robert D. Leslie; her parents of Seelyville; one son, Broc A. Leslie and his fiancee Rachel Utt of Terre Haute; one daughter and her husband, Cari N. and Don Oaks of Terre Haute; her twin sister, Terri Hoffman of Staunton; sister, Kimmala Sanders of Brazil; one brother, Rocky Benson of Seelyville; one granddaughter, Haley Rae Oakes; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by one brother, Pete Benson. She was a member of Brazil Moose Lodge 780 and the Terre Haute Eagles Lodge. Most importantly, she was a great homemaker, mother and grandmother. Services are 1 p.m. Friday in Callahan Funeral Home, 2425 Wabash Ave., with the Rev. Rick Swan officiating. Burial is in Calvary cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday. The family suggests that if friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Shirley Georgianna Martin
Shirley Georgianna Martin, 68, of Terre Haute died at 9:06 p.m. Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, in Union Hospital. She was retired from Aramark. She was born Nov. 18, 1936, in Terre Haute to Clarence Otho Fields and Effie May Lemmons Fields. Her husband, Paul Richard Schell, died in July 2004. Survivors include three sons, Gerry Schell and his wife, Tammy, Danny Schell and Stacy Schell, all of Terre Haute; two daughters, Marsha Slavens and her husband Earl, and Suzanne Closson and her husband Wayne, all of Terre Haute; one brother, Fred Fields; three sisters, Frances Houdeshell of Michigan, Rosemary Sloniker of Terre Haute and Virginia Hartley of Hamlet; 11 grandchildren, J.R. Slavens, Michelle Cates, Ricky Schell, Brandy Schell, Jennifer Schell, Jeremy Schell, Julie Schell, Amanda Schell, Joseph Schell, Chelsie Schell and Amber Closson; and several great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Rick Schell, in 1996; and one daughter, Patricia Schell, in 1957. Services are 11 a.m. Thursday in DeBaun Idaho Street Chapel. Burial is in Hull cemetery. Visitation is 9 a.m. until services Thursday.
Huston B. McClure
Huston B. McClure, 88, of Terre Haute died at 9:15 a.m. Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital. He was a 30-year Navy veteran. He was born May 1, 1916, in Indiana to Harry McClure and Rula Woodsmall McClure. Survivors include one daughter, Jeanne McClure; and one sister, Patricia McClure. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Juanita Maxine McClure. He was a 1932 graduate of Honey Creek High School and a 1938 graduate of Indiana State University. He entered the Navy in 1942 and attended Harvard University in communications electronics and engineering. He received his MBA from George Washington University in 1960. He was a veteran of the Korean War, invasion of Sicily and participated in the first ship-to-shore fax communication while aboard the USS Midway. He received the Bronze Star for commanding a fleet of support destroyers during the Vietnam War, served as director of Army, Navy and Air Force communications and operations in South and Central America, was director of Navy communications operations in Europe and North Atlantic/Indian Ocean, then was deputy chief of Naval material at the Pentagon until his retirement in 1972. He had taught briefly at Honey Creek Junior High School, and enjoyed gardening, golf, woodworking and traveling after his retirement. He was a 50-year member of Prairieton Lodge 178 Free & Accepted Masons, Republican National Committee, Retired Officers Association, Wayne Newton American Legion Post 348, National Rifle Association and National Geographic Society. Graveside services are private Thursday, in Hull cemetery, with a memorial by Vigo County Veterans Honor Guard. DeBaun Springhill Chapel assisted with arrangements.
Minnie High Mooney
Minnie High Mooney, 98, of Terre Haute died Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, in Burnsides Nursing Home in Marshall, Ill. She retired from the Vigo County School Corp., after 37 years of service. She was born Jan. 20, 1906, in Fontanet to Fred T. High and Golda Keller High. Her husband, James Chet Mooney, died earlier. Survivors include one sister, Marjorie Hrabik and her husband John of South Bend; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She also was preceded in death by three brothers, Fred E. High, Kendall High and Glen "Peachy" High; and four sisters, Evelyn Godwin, Virginia Cowger, Gloria Collins and Barbara Dass. She was a charter member of Memorial United Methodist Church and retired from Wiley High School in 1968 as the registrar. Celebration of Life is 11 a.m. Friday in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 S. 25th St., with the Revs. Cyndi Alte and Ron Bartlow officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 9 a.m. until services Friday. Marie Moscato
Marie Moscato, 81, of Terre Haute and formerly of New York, died at 10:11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital. She was a retired teacher's aide for the Board of Education of New York. She was born Nov. 19, 1923, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Alphonso Toia and Josephine Guzzo Toia. Her husband, James C. Moscato Sr., died in 1989. Survivors include one son, James C. Moscato Jr., and his wife Debbie of Florida; one daughter, Joanne Knoblock and her husband Ken of Terre Haute; one brother, Joseph Toia and his wife Geraldine of Brooklyn; one sister, Michelina Forgione of Queens, N.Y.; and five grandchildren, Kim Elizabeth Knoblock, Christine Knoblock, Ken Knoblock Jr., Sarah Knoblock and Michael Moscato. She also was preceded in death by her parents. She was a member of St. Margaret Mary Church and the Angels for Babies Group at the church and the Ridgewood Democratic Club. Memorial Mass is 11 a.m. Monday at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church. Burial is in Long Island National cemetery. DeBaun Funeral Homes assisted with local arrangements.
Merle Shaffer
Merle Shaffer, 85, died Saturday Jan. 8, 2005, in Prairie Village Living Center in Washington, Ind. He was born Jan 4, 1920, in Vigo County to William Shaffer and Pearl Halters. Survivors include three sisters, Essie Kirby, Beulah Huddleston and Anna Mae Mills; and one brother, Forrest Shaffer. Private burial is in Grandview cemetery. Marilyn M. McElheny
MECCA - Marilyn M. McElheny, 68, of Mecca died at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, in Heritage House of Clinton. She retired from Dormeyer Industries in 1998. She was born May 2, 1936, in Mecca to William I. Doan and Francis E. Birch Doan. Her husband, Donald L. McElheny, died in August 1988. Survivors include three sons, Bradley McElheny of Rosedale, Bruce McElheny of Rockville and Brian McElheny of Mecca; seven grandchildren; two brothers, Ike Doan of Universal and Greg Doan of Illinois. She also was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother. She was a 1954 graduate of Mecca High School and a member of Mecca Christian Church and the Kitchen Band and Choir. Services are 11 a.m. Thursday in Barnes Mortuary in Rockville, with the Rev. Gordon Guoli officiating. Burial is in Memory Garden cemetery in Rockville. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today.
Ray A. Carter
Ray A. Carter, 84, of Brazil died at 6:54 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2005, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital. He was born April 12, 1920, in Vigo Coutny to E.F. Carter and Bertha Archer Carter. Survivors include his wife, Ruth Sampson Carter; one daughter, Jean Ann Carter; one brother, Roy Carter; one sister, Betty Stoms; and several nieces and nephews. Services are 10 a.m. Friday in Moore Funeral Home, with the Revs. Steve Ford and Doug Parkey officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park in Terre Haute. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday.
Charles Cox
Charles Cox, 74, of West Terre Haute died at 8:54 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005, in Union Hospital. He retired in 1982, as a master sergeant with the 604th Military Police Battalion. He also retired as a corrections officer with the state of Indiana after many years of service. He was born July 16, 1930, in Linton to Walter Cox and Myrtle Lucas Cox. His wife, Vera M. Aug. 30, 1968, in Terre Haute, preceded him in death on Feb. 20, 2002. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Leon "Pete" and Carole Brown of Florida, and Gary K. and Becky Busiere of Terre Haute; one sister, Joan Martin of Brazil; two grandsons, Greg Brown of Clinton and Eric Busiere of Terre Haute; and two nieces, Susie French and Debbie Britton. He was a 1948 graduate of the former Valley High School. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of Wayne Newton Post 346 American Legion. Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday in Fitzpatrick-Pearce Funeral Home, with the Rev. Marion Pastore officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park, with graveside military rites by Post 346 American Legion. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today and before services Wednesday. Dorothy Eileen Davis Parsons
Dorothy Eileen Davis Parsons, 81, of Terre Haute died at 5:50 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005, in Terre Haute Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. She was born Jan. 6, 1924, in Duncan Falls, Ohio, to Fred Davis and Kathryn Emler Davis. Survivors include two sons, Terry Parsons of Menomonie, Wis., and David Parsons of Terre Haute; four daughters, Betty Harvey of Morriston, Fla., Mary Huff of Minot, N.D., Kathy Sutton of Golden, Colo., and Peggy Priola of Indianapolis; one brother, Don Davis of Newark, Ohio; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Lester McCullough; and one sister, Mildred Riffle. Services are 11 a.m. Thursday in DeBaun Springhill Chapel, with the Rev. Michael E. Huff officiating. Burial is in Bethel cemetery in New Concord, Ohio. There is no visitation, or reception following the services.

May 25, 1945, in West Terre Haute; two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda I. Shaw and Paul Shaw of West Terre Haute and Jennifer R. Beck and Bruce Beck of Fishers; a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas E. Rodgers and Lynn Rodgers of Evansville; one sister, Gertrude Mullins of Terre Haute; a sister-in-law, Gwendolyn Burns of Florida; five grandchildren, Michael P. Shaw, Douglas C. Shaw, Lauren R. Beck, Emily A. Rodgers and Matthew T. Rodgers; three step grandchildren, Aaron, Mason and Sarah Camp; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Lillian Rogers and Fern Perkins; and one brother, Homer Burns. She was a graduate of Concannon High School with the class of 1944. She attended Central Presbyterian Church and the Dresser Church. She was a loving wife and a devoted mother and grandmother. Barbara J. Shattuck, 69, of Terre Haute died at 11:31 a.m. Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, in Union Hospital. She retired from Springhill Wholesale. She was born July 9, 1935, in Linton to Ralph E. Curtis and Kathryn L. Mathot Curtis. Survivors include her husband of 52 years, Homer Shattuck; her mother; four sons, Michael Shattuck and his wife Debbie of Alpharetta, Ga., Mitchell Shattuck and his wife Cheryl, Christopher Shattuck and his wife Tonya, and Matthew Shattuck and his wife Julie, all of Terre Haute; two daughters, Kathie Swain and her husband Jack, and Carla Schoemaker and her husband Brian, all of Terre Haute; one brother, Ralph M. Curtis and his wife Charlotte of Terre Haute; two sisters, Peggy Power and her husband Carl of Sullivan, and Brenda Bourne and her husband Virgil of Gladstone, Mo.; 12 grandchildren, Shellie, Aaron, Lindsey, Katie, Emily, K.C., Kassandra, Jess, Josh, Jamie, Nate and Sean; and six great-grandchildren, Jackie, Jalen, Logan, Triston, Mia and Ember. She was preceded in death by her father. She was a wonderful seamstress and had a great love for sewing and crafts, and also loved sports. CARDINGTON, Ohio - Nancy L. Curts, 72, of Cardington died Monday morning, Jan. 10, 2005, in her residence. She was a clerk at Whiston's Pharmacy in Mount Gilead for more than 20 years. She was born Dec. 15, 1932, in Chardon to Milo B. Richey and LaVerne E. Korns Richey. Survivors include her husband, Robert Curts, whom she married
March 25, 1951, in United Methodist Church in Cardington; three sons and their wives, Gary and Holly Curts of Mount Vernon, Michael and Pam Curts of Terre Haute, Ind., and Stephan and Joanna Curts of Mount Gilead; nine grandchildren, Clay, Alec, Chad, Laurel, Andrew, Adria and Rebecca Curts, Kristy Boehm and Sarah Campbell; two great-grandchildren, Ethan and Aubrey Boehm; three brothers, James Richey of Spencer, N.Y., Keith Richey of Delaware and David Richey of Edison; one sister, Juanita Randall of Mount Gilead; and two aunts, Dorothy Parks of Twinsburg and Martha Korns of Marengo.
