Carolyn Jane Haslem Meharry
Carolyn Jane Haslem Meharry, 74, of Venice, Fla., and formerly of Terre Haute died Thursday, Nov. 4, 2004, in her residence. She moved from Plainfield to Venice in 1998. She worked in real estate as a broker and appraiser, and was a small business owner of a pool supply company for 11 years. She was born Oct. 17, 1930, in Terre Haute to Dr. Ezra R. Haslem and Ruby O. Yowell. Survivors include her husband, Col. George L. Meharry, U.S. Army (ret.); one daughter, Christine H. Stensland of Senora, Calif.; one son, George L. Meharry of Atlanta; and one brother, William Ezra Haslem of Union, Mich. She attended Indiana University and Indiana State University. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Kappa Social Sorority, served as president of the Kokomo Chapter, and was a member of Kappa Kappa Kappa Beta Chapter in Brazil. She served as treasurer of First United Methodist Church in Brazil and was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Venice. She loved to travel, loved Pomeranians, and was an avid bridge player and golfer. Services are 3 p.m. today in Farley Funeral Home and Crematory Venice Chapel. Visitation is 2 p.m. until services today. William H. Huxel
William H. Huxel, 89, of Terre Haute died at 6:07 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2004, in Davis Gardens Healthcare Center. He was a commercial realtor for Pfister & Co., Inc. for several years before his retirement. He was born July 1, 1915, in Granite City, Ill., to William W. Huxel and Ida Hager Huxel. He was preceded in death by his two wives, Ruth Reuss Huxel in 1975 and Nancy Huxel in 1985. He is survived by one son, Gary Huxel and his wife Donna of Terre Haute; three stepsons, Dr. John Sanders and his wife Olga of Lafayette, Dr. Thomas Sanders and his wife Ann of Fort Collins, Colo., and Dr. Scott Sanders and his wife Barbara of Mankato, Minn.; one stepdaughter, Jan Stitt and her husband Paul of Fairbanks, Alaska; grandchildren; Tysen Reuss Huxel of Indianapolis, Nicole and John Sanders Jr. of Lafayette, Hollie, Lisa and Bill Sanders of Colorado, Michael and Lara Sanders of Minnesota, and Darcy Leone of Alaska; and a cousin, Mary Jean Huxel Hillmer and her husband Dr. Kenneth Hillmer of Granite City. He was a 1937 graduate of Illinois College in Jacksonville, Ill., with a degree in chemistry. He was a member of Unity Presbyterian Church and served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Celebration of his life is 2 p.m. Thursday in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 S. 25th St., with the Rev. Loyal Bishop officiating. Burial is in Sunset Hills Memorial Estates in Edwardsville, Ill. Willard A. 'Chick' Moody
Willard A. "Chick" Moody, 82, of Kuttawa, Ky., and formerly of Terre Haute died at 6:25 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2004, in the Veterans center in Hanson, Ky. He was born Jan. 21, 1922, in St. Charles, Ill., to Willard Moody Sr. and Constance Hathecock Moody. Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Pearline Parker Moody; one son, Willard A. Moody III of Chicago; two daughters, Yolande C. Moody and Danielle M. Moody, both of LeHavre, Belgium; three sisters, Betty Johnson of Columbus, Ohio, Martha Richard of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Carole Jones of Brazil; three brothers, Douglas Moody of Detroit, Wesley Moody of Chicago and Wendell Moody of Terre Haute; one uncle, Verdell Hathecock of Terre Haute; special friend, Lee Russell of Edwardsville, Ill.; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, Norman Moody, Robert "Bob" Moody and Richard "Dick" Moody. His elementary school years were in Aurora, Ill., junior high school was in Paris, Ill., and he graduated from the former Wiley High School in Terre Haute. Shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was sent to Hampton Institute in Hampton, Va., for special training. He was recalled to service during the Korean War and was an instructor at the Great Lakes Naval Base. He was a former police officer and detective in the Chicago Police Department. His last place of employment, before becoming totally disabled, was as an instructor/counselor at the Job Corps in Morgantown, Ky. He was a member of Pioneer Post 340 American Legion. Services are 1 p.m. Tuesday in Russell Funeral Home, with the Rev. C.N. Tyler officiating. Burial is in Stewart Lawn cemetery, with full military rites. Norma 'Maxine' Buell
BOWLING GREEN - Norma "Maxine" Buell, 76, of Bowling Green died Friday, Nov. 5, 2004, in St. Vincent Clay Hospital in Brazil. She had been employed as a clerk at Arketex in Brazil. She was born Oct. 24, 1928, in Missouri to Guy and Nell Farris Hoke. Survivors include her husband, Leonard Buell; a son, Richard "Keith" Buell of Bowling Green; a daughter, Rhonda Buell of Jasonville; two grandchildren, Chad Buell of Bowling Green and Tracy Ann Barbee of Rosedale; and two great-grandchildren, Christy Barbee and Chad Buell Jr. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Jean Love. She was a 1946 graduate of Brazil High School. Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday in Bowling Green Methodist Church. Burial is in Fairview cemetery in Bowling Green. Judith A. Fuson
SULLIVAN - Judith A. Fuson, 52, of Scott City, and formerly of Sullivan County died at 12:55 p.m. Friday, Nov. 5, 2004, in Sullivan County Community Hospital. She was born Dec. 25, 1951, in Sullivan County to John Siner and Rosemary Crow Siner. Survivors include her husband, Steven Fuson; her father; two sons, Andrew Fuson and Bradley Fuson; one daughter, Beth Ann Cooks; one brother, Steve Siner; five grandchildren; and 12 nieces and nephews. Services are 11 a.m. Monday in Shelburn United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Terry Chandler and Don Ransford officiating. Burial is in Pogue cemetery in Fairbanks. Ronnie 'Reggie' Barnes
Ronnie "Reggie" Barnes, 48, of Waco, Texas, and formerly of West Terre Haute died Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 3, 2004, in his residence. He was born Feb. 29, 1956, in Terre Haute. Survivors include one son, Nicholas Barnes of Waco; his mother, Patricia Nuttall of West Terre Haute; his father and stepmother, Robert and Emojean Barnes of West Terre Haute; four sisters, Liann Tabor of Raleigh, N.C., Pam Long and her husband Hugh of Terre Haute, Melinda Lors and her husband Randall of Erie, Pa., and Anna Schatz of West Terre Haute; two brothers, Steve Barnes and his wife Audrey of Cleveland, Tenn., and Kevin Nuttall of West Terre Haute; and several nieces and nephews. He was a graduate of West Vigo High School class of 1974. He was a certified scuba diver. Services are 10 a.m. Monday in Fitzpatrick-Pearce Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dennis Leek officiating. Elsie Boswell
Elsie Boswell, 85, of Terre Haute died Nov. 3, 2004, in Southwood Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born May 18, 1919, in Seelyville to Westley Bird and Nancy Edith Lemmon Bird. She is survived by her sons, Chester Larkins and Ronald Larkins; and daughter, Connie Lynn; two brothers, Richard Bird and James Bird; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Private graveside services are 2 p.m. Saturday in Oakhill cemetery in Riley, with the Rev. Aaron Wheaton officiating. Mattox-Fox Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Andrew A. Favali
Andrew A. Favali, 16, of Terre Haute died Wednesday evening, Nov. 3, 2004, as a result of a train/vehicle accident in Terre Haute. He was born in Vigo County on Feb. 7, 1988, to Frank Favali and Dr. Marcia Sinclair Favali. Survivors include his parents; his girlfriend and soulmate, Ashley Elrod and her entire family; one sister, Caitlin Favali; maternal grandfather, Robert Sinclair; paternal grandmother, Rose Favali; godmother, Kathy Favali; godfather, Jon Sinclair; aunts and uncles, Stan and Deanna Sinclair, Phillip Sinclair, Jon and Mindy Sinclair and Kathy Favali and her husband Terry Warner. He was preceded in death by one brother, Joseph Favali. He was a junior at Terre Haute North Vigo High School and a member of the Welding Club. He had earlier attended both Sacred Heart grade school and Chauncey Rose Middle School. He was a member of the Young American Bowling Association. He also belonged to the Royal Rangers Outpost 49. He had attended both St. Benedict Catholic Church and First Assembly of God churches in Terre Haute. Mass of Christian Burial is 12:05 p.m. Monday in St. Benedict Catholic Church, with the Revs. Bernard LaMontagne and Keith Taylor officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Anthony S. Wilbur Jr.
Anthony S. "Tony" Wilbur Jr., 66, of West Terre Haute died at 1:50 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, 2004, in Royal Oaks Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. He retired as a heavy equipment operator with the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 841 of Terre Haute. He was born Sept. 16, 1938, in Vigo County to Anthony S. Wilbur Sr. and Anita M. Bryan Wilbur. His wife, Patricia A. Shattuck Wilbur, whom he married
on Sept. 14, 1960, preceded hin in death on July 28, 1978. Survivors include three sons, Anthony "Scott" Wilbur III of Terre Haute, Keith Wilbur of New Albany and Chris Wilbur of West Terre Haute; a daughter, Kelly Waters of West Terre Haute; a brother, David Wilbur Sr. of West Virginia; 11 grandchildren, Travis Wilbur, Nathan Wilbur, Natasha Wilbur, Jennifer Wilbur, David Moody, Cami Wilbur, Jenna Wilbur, Brooklyn Waters, BayIee Waters, Lianna Jordan and Kayla Hoole; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He also was preceded in death by his parents. He was a member of the Dresser Church, and a member of Laborers International Union Local 204 of Terre Haute. Services are 1 p.m. Tuesday in Fitzpatrick-Pearce Funeral Home, with the Rev. Chris Wilbur officiating. Burial is in Bethesda Memorial Park. Betty Joan Nevins
BRAZIL - Betty Joan Nevins, 81, of Brazil died at 6:38 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, 2004, in St. Vincent Clay County Hospital. She was born June 28, 1923, in Edgar County, Ill., to Alvah Ray Girdley and Elsie Mitchell. Her husband, Leonard Nevins, preceded her in death in 1983. Survivors include four sons, Johnny Nevins and his wife Neila, Charles Nevins and his wife Diana, Robert Nevins, and Michael Nevins and his wife Debbie; one daughter, Betty Lewis; three sisters, Doris Harnes, Patty Frahm and Martha Turner; three brothers, Warren Girdley, David Girdley and Robert Girdley; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She also was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Donnie Nevins; and one sister, Irene Bell. Services are 1 p.m. Monday in Mattox-Wood Funeral Home in Terre Haute, with the Rev. Richard V. Robert R. Carpenter
Robert R. Carpenter, 81, of Terre Haute, and formerly of Indianapolis, died at 3:01 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2004, in Royal Oaks Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. He was a flightlines supervisor for 22 years for the Indiana National Guard. He was born Sept. 10, 1923, in Kokomo, to Matt G. Carpenter and Madeline G. Remy Carpenter. His wife, Lorraine Havill Carpenter, preceded him in death on Aug. 17, 2000. Survivors include two sons, Mel Carpenter and his wife Carol of Goshen and Matt Carpenter of Terre Haute; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He also was preceded in death by his parents. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the 303rd Bomb Group of the U.S. Army Air Corps, flying B-17 missions over Europe. He was a member of North Terre Haute Christian Church, where he served as deacon, the Terre Haute Antique Car Club, Speedway Masonic Lodge and Scottish Rite. Services are noon Saturday in Mattox-Wood Funeral Home, with the Rev. Larry Scott officiating. Entombment is in Roselawn Memorial Park, with military rites. Jacquelyn Mae "Jackie" Collett, 9, of Terre Haute died Thursday afternoon, Dec. 2, 2004, in her residence. She was born July 9, 1995, in Terre Haute to John Collett and Sallee Grim Collett. She is survived by her parents of Terre Haute; two brothers, Dougie Collett and T.J. Collett; grandparents, Doug and Patti Grim and Marlene and John McMahon, all of Terre Haute; great-grandmother, Connie Wetherbee of Springfield, Ohio; aunts and uncles, Fred and Jennifer Grim, Scooter and Heidi Grim, Cori and Pat Carney, Renee and Greg Bishop and Michelle and Scott Lawson; and several cousins. She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and was very active in the development of the recently completed Oakley Playground at Deming Park. Catherine Mildred Meissel Frakes
Catherine Mildred Meissel Frakes, 84, of Indianapolis and formerly of Terre Haute died Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2004. She was a homemaker and worked as a bookkeeper for several small businesses in the Indianapolis area. She was born Feb. 14, 1920, in Sulphur Springs to August Meissel and Dora Ellen Akers Meissel. Survivors include her husband of 64 years, Ivan C. Frakes Jr.; four daughters, Nancy Bramlett, Susan Logsdon, Marilyn Raatz and Christine Williams; one sister, Mary Isabelle Doyle; two nephews, Michael Doyle and Dr. Robert Meissel; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Ernest W. Meissel and Earl V. Meissel; and one sister, Helen M. Meissel. She was a 1938 graduate of Garfield High School and attended Indiana State University. She was a member of Northminster Presbyterian Church and the Presbyterian Women's Circle Six. She was an avid bridge and card player and enjoyed puzzles and brain teasers. Memorial services are 10 a.m. Saturday in Northminster Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis, with memorial visitation 4 to 8 p.m. today in Shirley Brothers Fishers-Castleton Chapel. Madeline Jozsa, 89, of Brownsburg, and formerly of Terre Haute died Nov. 30, 2004, in Brownsburg Health Care, where she was a resident. She was employed by Quaker Maid and Indiana State University for several years, and also was a homemaker. She was born Jan. 2, 1915, in Diamond to John Verostko Sr. and Mary Soltis Verostko. Her husband, Frank Jozsa Sr., preceded her in death. Survivors include one son, Frank Jozsa Jr. of Fort Mill, S.C.; one daughter and her husband, Nancy and Don Altuve of lndianapolis; four sisters, Agnes Davis, Kay Ofsansky and Betty Readinger, all of Terre Haute, and Margaret Genovese of South Pasadena, Calif.; one brother, Gene Verostko of Terre Haute; four grandchildren, Jeff Jozsa, Alicia Smith, Adam Altuve and Amanda Quincy; and three great-grandchildren, Nicole Jozsa and Hanna and Nathan Smith. She also was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Diane Donnenhoffer; two brothers, Paul and John; and five sisters, Mary, Pauline, Judy, Annie and Leona.
