Sadie Alberta McCoskey

Sadie Alberta "Bertie" McCoskey, 77, of Terre Haute passed away peacefully on Nov. 6, 2004, at 9:45 p.m., in Westridge Health Care. She was born July 8, 1927, in Terre Haute to Zollie U. and Sadie Munday Spencer. She was born totally blind, but in no way let her loss of sight hinder her setting goals for herself, and accomplishing many wonderful goals in her life. An absolutely awesome mother, a perfectionist, an amazing lady! Bertie received her education at the Indiana School for the Blind in Indianapolis. It was there that she learned and became the fastest writer of Braille in the state of Indiana. She was a gifted lady with a God-given talent with music, playing by ear many various instruments, was an extremely beautiful organist, and had a pleasant, melodious voice, singing solos and duets in church, as well as being a church pianist. She was a graduate of Indiana Business College, and later worked for Columbia Records as a Dictaphone typist for 15 years, where management was in awe of her exceptional abilities and perfect typing. Her husband, Charles McCoskey, preceded her in death in 1999. She is survived and was dearly loved by her daughter and son-in-law, Sally and Lee Ray Hoopingarner; and dearly loved by her son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Darlene Boyce. She was the beloved grandmother of five grandchildren and their spouses, Duwayne Boyce and fiancee Jessie Williams, Kevin and Faith Hoopingarner, Angela and Jay Cottom, Kari and Kelly Pope, and Tina and Chris Newman. She also cherished her 12 great-grandchildren, Michael Boyce, Julie Boyce, Doug Harmon, Meagan Hoopingarner, Danny Boyce II, Ryan Cottom, Travis Hoopingarner, Mallari Pope, Justin Norris, Madison Pope, Josh Cottom and Maci Pope. She also is survived by two sisters and their spouses, Betty Riley and Alta Boyce; a sister-in-law, Maxine Spencer; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. She had a special, dear friend, Wilma Sellers, who visited her loyally for five years in the nursing home. Pete Sellers was also a very caring friend to her. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Robert Spencer. She was happiest being with her family, and was especially delighted when we all shared and recounted our special memories and special moments, both humorous and serious. She told us during one of her sickest moments that she loved to hear us laugh. She was fond of gospel music and the Gaithers, the late Marty Robbins, and country music. She enjoyed hearing the birds sing, or listening to a woodpecker in a tree. She loved to cook, and to home-can vegetables, to sit on the bank of a river or lake and fish, and especially loved to travel. She looked forward to entertaining on a weekly basis at the various nursing homes with the Senior Citizens' Kitchen Band. She had a stroke in 1999 that left her paralyzed and unable to care for herself. She had been in the nursing facility for five years, and had to confront new obstacles that she had never faced before, but she kept going through her strong faith in God and with our daily family visits. We are so thankful that she could communicate with us almost to the end. Her strength and courage continued to brighten our days, when we felt so helpless. Mother, or "GaGa," as she is known to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, never lost her loving, caring ways or her sense of humor. Her love for God played the most important role in her life, and kept her going through some very difficult and frustrating times throughout her entire life. From her modest beginnings and on to the end of her life, she remained a strong, courageous person, a person whom we will always respect for properly guiding us along our way, a very loving mother and grandmother. She was a member of Eighth Avenue Baptist Church, and greatly appreciated Pastor Dick Smith, both as a minister and friend, for his visits and prayers, and Katherine Hart for all the beautiful cards that she sent on a regular basis, and the special visits from the ladies of the church. She was the past secretary for the Association for the Blind, and a member of the Good Cheer Club. In lieu of flowers, if you wish, the family requests that you make donations to the Eighth Avenue Baptist Church, Entrance Restoration Fund. She is gone, but she will never be forgotten. Her memory will forever be fondly etched in our hearts, and we will always be comforted knowing that she is no longer suffering. She can see perfectly all the beauty that surrounds her. She can feel the serenity, the peace, the love in the place that she has looked so forward to, her new home - Heaven. Services are 1 p.m. Tuesday in DeBaun Idaho Street Chapel, with Pastor Dick Smith officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 11 a.m. until services Tuesday.
