She was born to Robert Lincoln Jenks and Esther Newton Jenks in Terre Haute on March 21, 1924. After a childhood of music lessons, working in her mother's tailor shop, performing in plays and the Terre Haute Symphony, she graduated from Garfield in 1942 and then married
David Courtney Brentlinger in 1944. Together they had three children, David, Cathleen Hogan and Tom. In 1952, Miriam and her twin sister, Martha, began their teaching career by starting their own ceramic studio, M and M Ceramics. Soon thereafter, she entered Indiana State University, graduating magna cum laude in 1960. During this time, she was also PTA president at Fort. Harrison Elementary School and den mother for her sons' scout troop. After graduating from the university with a degree in art education, she began her 26-year career teaching art at Honey Creek High School from 1960-1970 and Terre Haute South Vigo High School from 1970-1986. Her skill as a teacher is evidenced in the numerous Gold Keys that her students earned annually in the National Scholastic Awards, and in the fact that when she retired, many of her former students organized a special exhibit of their work in her honor at the Sheldon Swope Art Museum. Throughout her life, Miriam continued to create her own art, and she was selected to show her work in many art museum exhibits including the Mid-States Art Exhibit in Evansville, the Hoosier Salon in Indianapolis, and the Wabash Valley Exhibition in Terre Haute. Having a hungry mind, she continued educating herself well past the requirements of her profession, and she traveled widely. To Miriam, art was a way of living that spread to all parts of her existence, from her beautiful garden, to cooking and sewing, and to her relationships with those she loved. After her retirement, Miriam explored her family's genealogy, compiling vast quantities of organized photographs and documentation for future generations. As a lifetime member of Maple Avenue United Methodist Church, she served on many committees. She was also a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society for women in education.
