Susie Wilson Alkire
Susie Wilson Alkire, 93, of Terre Haute, died at 8:20 p.m. Friday, Aug. 27, 2004, in Royal Oaks Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. She was the office manager for Drs. William Baldridge, John Showalter and Paul Zwerner. She spent her retirement years in Palmetto, Fla., returning to Terre Haute to reside with her daughter Sally and son-in-law Don in 1998. She was born Jan. 10, 1911, in Georgetown, Ill., to Morris and Nell Nier Wilson. Her husband, James L. Alkire, preceded her in death on Dec. 23, 1980. Survivors include her daughter, Sally Alkire Kintz and her husband Donald of Terre Haute; grandsons Randy Kintz and his wife Linda of Springvale, Maine, and John Kintz of Sarasota, Fla.; four great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren; and a nephew, Larry Wilson and his wife Mary and their family of Wake Forest, N.C. Other surviving family members include a daughter, Molly Alkire Beach and her husband Michael of Joliet, Ill.; five grandchildren, Tracie Voitik, Stacie, Robert, Kevin and Kurt Beach; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services and burial are later in Ellenton, Fla. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to St. Benedict Catholic Church in Terre Haute. Helen Mehes Balog
Helen Mehes Balog of Merrillville, and formerly of Terre Haute, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004, in Merrillville. She was born Dec. 9, 1916, in Clinton to George and Rebecca Gabor Mehes. She married
George Balog on July 17, 1941, and she remained his devoted wife for 60 years until he preceded her in death. She is survived by her loving daughters, Victoria Balog Isenstadt of Colorado Springs, Colo., Veronica Balog Schmid of Merrillville and Suzanne Rose Balog of Castlemaine, Australia; three sons-in-law, Paul Isenstadt, Howard Schmid and Douglas Witt; grandchildren, Mark Isenstadt and his wife Luksana of Chang Mai, Thailand, Monica Schmutz and her husband Kurt of Chicago, David Witt and his wife Monie of St. John and Jeffrey Isenstadt of Los Angeles; her loving niece, Mary Engle and her husband Jim of Terre Haute; a nephew, Alex Balu; and her niece Carol Czomak and brother-in-law, Steve Czomak, formerly of Brazil. She also was preceded in death by her loving siblings Mary, Ann and Nick. At the age of three, she lost her father to influenza. The family was faced with economic hardship, but with her mother's strong will, she became a hard worker and an excellent student, becoming class valedictorian at Garfield High School. She was eager to learn, and until the day of her death she was an avid reader. She could converse about world politics, opera, Romanian literature or the history of the Orthodox Church. Her roots in the Romanian community in Terre Haute and her strong connection to the Orthodox Church as a child began a strong commitment to her heritage and her faith. She and her husband, George, owned and operated several grocery businesses in northwest Indiana. While he was serving in World War II, she operated a restaurant by herself in East Chicago. They also raised three wonderful daughters, and took great pride in having all of them graduate from college, despite many personal sacrifices. Each day, her thoughts and actions reflected her deep love for Vicki, Veronica and Suzanne. She also found time to learn Russian, listen to Romanian records and tapes, can vegetables, make Romanian Easter eggs in celebration of Orthodox Easter and design Christmas wreaths. She was a generous, non-judgmental person, a devoted wife, a loving and concerned mother and proud grandmother. All who knew her will never forget her wit, her stories and her genuine love of life. We should all carry her spirit in our hearts. Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, in New St. George Romanian Orthodox Church in Lansing, Ill., with the Rev. Dorothy J. Cooper
Dorothy J. Cooper, 84, of Terre Haute, died at 8:49 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004, in Healthsouth Rehabilitation Hospital. She was a co-owner of Smith's Hardware, and after 12 years of employment, she retired as a secretary for Ironworkers Local 439, a job she loved. She remained truly thankful and appreciative to the officers and members of Local 439. She was born Dec. 16, 1919, in Burnett to Perry Marquis and Mary Ogden Marquis. She is survived by one daughter, Garlinda Cooper, of Terre Haute; two sisters, Katherine Merrilees of Klamath Falls, Ore., and Mary Rogers of Visalia, Calif.; one brother, Jack Marquis of Norwalk, Calif; several nieces and nephews; and special friends Roy Hunt, Erma Timko, Jim Alsman, Jane Frakes and Shelly Easton. She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Gertrude, Robert, Joseph and James; and one son, Garlan W. Cooper, who died Jan. 3, 1974. She was a member of United Methodist Temple, where she was active in the Mature Singles class, served as a church greeter, and for many years, was a counter. She also was a member of the Honey Creek Mother Bees. As a giving person, she enjoyed helping the needy and the time she spent with Meals on Wheels. Services were 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 21, 2004, in DeBaun Springhill Chapel, and the Rev. Steve Rundell officiated. Burial was in Roselawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made for final expenses to Garlinda Cooper in care of the funeral home.
Nathaniel Dyer
Nathaniel Dyer, 90, of Terre Haute, died at 9:50 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2004, in St. Vincent Clay Hospital in Brazil. He was a cottage manager for the Indiana State Boys School in Plainfield, retiring in 1978. He was born Feb. 15, 1914, in Providence, Ky., to Edward Dyer and Lucy Weir Dyer. His wife of 53 years, Elizabeth Dyer, preceded him in death in April 1992. Survivors include one niece, Isabelle Smith of Terre Haute; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was a member of St. Paul's Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and trustee. Services are 11 a.m. Monday in St. Paul's Baptist Church, with the Rev. Terry Clark officiating. Burial is in Grandview cemetery. Visitation is 10 a.m. to services Monday in the church. Dunn Family Mortuary assisted with the arrangements.
Danny Erwin
Danny Erwin, 50, of Terre Haute, died at 6:47 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 26, 2004, in the emergency room of Union Hospital. He was born Feb. 8, 1954, in Jasper to Glen Erwin and Renelda Bailey Erwin. Survivors include his wife, Joyce Jones Erwin of Terre Haute; his parents, Glen and Renelda of Terre Haute; three stepsons, Corey Rutledge, Jerry Rutledge Jr. and Chris Rutledge, all of Terre Haute; one sister, Peggy Summers of Terre Haute; one brother, Larry Erwin of Wildwood, Mo.; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Funeral services are 1 p.m. Monday in Fitzpatrick-Pearce Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dana Coverstone officiating. Burial follows in Pleasant View cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home.
Connie Sue Harris
Connie Sue Harris, 61, of Cory, and formerly of Terre Haute, died at 5:05 p.m. Friday, Aug. 27, 2004, in the emergency room of St. Vincent Clay Hospital in Brazil. She worked as a beautician in Meadows Center for some time, and also was a nursing assistant for Vigo County School Corporation, mainly in Terre Haute South High School, retiring after 18 years. She was born Jan. 24, 1943, in Terre Haute to Elbert and Martha Rojahn Johnson. Her husband, Girthie Harris, whom she married
on July 15, 1962, survives. Other survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Shawn and Kelly Harris of Cory and Scott and Mandy Harris of Brownsburg; one daughter and son-in-law, Traci and Richard Lorenze of Center Point; and five grandchildren, David Harris, Ben Harris, Robin Harris, Vivianne Harris and Cody Moon. She was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Donald Johnson. She was a graduate of Garfield High School, and later graduated from beauty school in Indianapolis. She enjoyed drawing, calligraphy and flower gardening. Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday in Schoppenhorst Funeral Home in Clay City, with the Rev. Rick Parsons officiating. At her request, cremation is arranged with burial of the ashes later. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Monday and before services Tuesday in the funeral home. The family requests that memorial contributions be directed to Hospice of the Wabash Valley, with envelopes available in the funeral home.
John Gardner Morey
John Gardner Morey, 74, of Terre Haute, died Friday, Aug. 20, 2004, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital. He worked as a management consultant in New York, Washington, Chicago and Terre Haute. He also founded Recovery Associates (Fellowship House) in Terre Haute, and had served on the Indiana Governor's Addiction Services Advisory Council. He was born May 21, 1930, in Marquette, Mich., to Glen Henry Morey and Ruth Kemp Morey. He is survived by two children, Anne Morey of College Station, Texas, and John Morey of Montclair, N.J.; and by his former wife, Rosanne Morey, also of Montclair. He was a 1952 graduate of Harvard College. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1953 to 1956, specializing in submarine ordnance. He was named a Sagamore of the Wabash for his services to Indiana on behalf of drug addiction and alcoholism counseling and rehabilitation. A memorial service is planned in the fall. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Recovery Associates, 2940 Jefferson St., Terre Haute, IN 47802, or to the Wabash Valley Community Foundation. Niola C. Stuffle
Niola C. Stuffle, 92, of Terre Haute, died at 5:05 p.m. Friday, Aug. 27, 2004, in Southwood Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born Jan. 10, 1912, in Martin County to Jacob Liston Barnes and Esta Wagner Barnes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin Stuffle, on May 6, 1993. Survivors include one son and his wife, David and Barbara Stuffle; six daughters, Mickey Jenkins, Golden Nadine Hofmann and her husband Robert, Joan Halt and her husband Cecil, Sharon Sipple and her husband Frank, Avanda Hamn, and Jean Matherly and her husband Moe; one sister, Olive Simmons; 19 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Norma Sams; and one brother, Donald Barnes. She was a member of Faith Wesleyan Church. She loved cooking for her family and friends, playing the piano and singing. Earlier in her life, she sang with a ladies gospel quartet throughout the Wabash Valley. She also had written her autobiography. She was a dedicated wife, mother and homemaker. Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday in DeBaun Springhill Chapel, with the Rev. Ray Ferren officiating. Burial is in Grandview cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Monday in the funeral home.
Ruth Salin Tilley
BRAZIL - Ruth Salin Tilley, 90, of Brazil, died Friday, Aug. 27, 2004, in her residence. She had enjoyed a lifetime of excellent health. She was born Jan. 19, 1914, in Brazil to Francis H. Salin and Anna Akers Salin. She was raised in Hadleytown, a neighborhood on East Pinckley Street. She completed the first eight grades at Hadleytown School, and graduated from Brazil High School in 1932, where she was a member of the National Honor Society. She was a member of Order of Eastern Star, Brazil Chapter 80 since Feb. 17, 1950. She was baptized in First Christian Church at the age of 14, and most recently attended Berea Christian Church. She married
Maurice C. Tilley on June 16, 1938, and he preceded her in death in 1997. They had two children, John P. Tilley and Dean E. Tilley; and four grandchildren, Dr. Ann Elizabeth Tilley, John Charles Tilley, Dylan Charles Tilley and Brittany Salin Tilley. Survivors include her son, John P. Tilley and his wife Suzie; their children, Dr. Ann E. Tilley and John C. Tilley; Dean's children, Dylan C. Tilley and Brittany S. Tilley, and their mother, Amanda Tilley; a sister, Helen S. Winklepleck and her husband John; and several nieces and nephews. She also was preceded in death by her son, Dean, in 2002, and her sister, Freida Vance, in 2004. She had a keen mind and excellent memory and enjoyed working crossword puzzles. She could recite the Gettysburg Address, preamble to the Constitution, her address when she was inducted into the National Honor Society and the Masonic Funeral Lecture, which she retained when she helped her husband learn it years ago. She was fond of recalling the early 1940s, when her husband was Clay County sheriff and she served as jail matron, which included cooking for inmates and doing the laundry. As a young lady, she worked for the Kidd Insurance Agency, and later at Riddell National Bank, retiring in 1979. She and her husband enjoyed traveling. The traveled to Paris, France, to visit her relatives and to visit the cemetery in Momart where many of her paternal relatives are buried. She was especially fond of their trip to Hawaii, and they enjoyed many vacations together in south Florida. Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday in French Funeral Home, with the Rev. Thomas Hess officiating. Burial is in Summit Lawn cemetery. Visitation is 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, and noon to services Tuesday in the funeral home.
Joe Edward Haberle
JASONVILLE - Joe Edward Haberle, of Kirkwood, Mo., and formerly of Jasonville, died Friday Aug. 27, 2004. He was born in Jasonville to Iva Haberle and the late Baron Haberle. He was the beloved husband of Marilyn Haberle, and the brother-in-law of Jean Springer and Priscilla McCarty Reed of Terre Haute. He was a dear husband, son, uncle, great-uncle, cousin, friend and teacher of many. Memorial services are Wednesday in Kirkwood United Methodist Church. Burial is private. Visitation is 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in Bopp Chapel in Kirkwood. Grace Virginia Cramer
Grace Virginia Cramer, 83, of Terre Haute, and formerly of Paris, Ill., died at 10:05 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 26, 2004, in Royal Oaks Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. She was born Oct. 3, 1920, in Brazil to William Rex Nowling and Sarah Somes "Sadie" Nowling. Her husband, Frank Reed Cramer, preceded her in death on July 20, 1988. Survivors include two daughters, Connie Cash and her husband Donald of Rochester, Ill., and Joyce Hendricks of Glendale, Ariz.; one sister, Whilemene Nall of Clinton; and four grandchildren, Jeffrey Cash of Summer Hill, Ill., Kevin Cash of Rochester, Amy Paterno of Surprise, Ariz., and Eric Hendricks of Glendale. Services are 10 a.m. Monday in Stewart & Carroll Funeral Home in Paris, with burial in Roselawn Memorial Park in Terre Haute. Visitation is 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home.
Marion L. Jarvis
Marion L. Jarvis, 83, of Terre Haute, died at 7:39 a.m. Friday, Aug. 27, 2004, in Union Hospital. He had been a driver for B & B Foods and Terre Haute First National Bank. He was born Nov. 10, 1920, in Parke County to Luther M. Jarvis and Nancy Natalie Wright Jarvis. His wife, Dorothy Gastineau Jarvis, whom he married
June 30, 1972, preceded him in death on May 9, 1993. Survivors include his companion of several years, Mable Fouts; three sons, Terry L. Jarvis and his wife Judy, Jay M. Jarvis and his wife Mary and John Mark Jarvis and his wife Shirley; two stepsons, Chuck Gastineau and his wife Anita and Max Gastineau; one stepdaughter, Rita Gastineau; one sister, Anna Hartman; one nephew, Richard Loden; 10 grandchildren, 11 step grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a life member and past administrator of the Terre Haute Moose Lodge 1009, a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 972 and a member of the American Legion. He also was a member of the First Financial Goldenaire Retirees and Maplewood Christian Church. Services are 2 p.m. Monday in DeBaun Idaho Street Chapel, with the Rev. Rick Swan officiating. Burial is in Rosedale cemetery, with graveside memorial rites by the VFW. Pallbearers are Dennis Jarvis, Ed Jarvis, Damon Jarvis, Trevor Jarvis, Steven Jarvis and Christopher Williams. Lawrence Herbert Thielman
Lawrence Herbert Thielman, 56, formerly of Terre Haute died Saturday, Aug. 21, 2004, in Mount Pleasant, S.C. He owned and operated Thielman Rare Books and Manuscripts, while living in Terre Haute. He was born Jan. 8, 1948, in Evansville to James Lawrence Thielman and Beulah May "Daisy" Thielman. Survivors include his wife, Eileen T. Thielman of Mount Pleasant; and one daughter, Katrina Danielle Thielman of Palo Alto, Calif. He was preceded in death by his parents. He received his bachelor of science degree in economics from Indiana State University. Services are 11 a.m. today in Roselawn Chapel, with burial in Roselawn Memorial Park. Brent James Washington
Brent James Washington, an infant, was born Saturday, Aug. 21, 2004, and died at 1:15 p.m. that day in Terre Haute Regional Hospital. Survivors include his mother, Gina Stevens of Terre Haute; grandparents, Robert and Patricia Stewart of Terre Haute and Mamie Washington of Terre Haute; three brothers, Brandon Keith Calloway, Brian Dominic Stevens and Bryson Dwayne Stevens, all of Terre Haute; one godsister, Kimberly Roberts; two special sisters, Cherish Hutchinson and Tameka Shavers; and an uncle, Brian Stewart and his wife Jackie. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Clarence "Pete" Washington; a sister, Brandi Renee Grisby; and a brother, Bradley K. Webster. Graveside services were Friday in Grandview cemetery, with the Rev. Brian Stewart officiating. Dunn Family Mortuary assisted with arrangements.
