Arvena Riley
Arvena Riley, 83, of Kissimmee, Fla., formerly of Terre Haute died Friday, Aug. 20, 2004, in her residence. She was born in Graves County, Ky., to Porter and Edith Byrn Dew. She was preceded in death by her husband Randle Glen Riley. Survivors include one son, the Rev. Larry Glen Riley of Kissimmee; three daughters, Joyce Warren of Livonia, Mich., Sandra Bedwell of West Land, Mich., and Debra Summers of Modesto, Calif.; one brother, Ray Dew of Boaz, Ky., 14 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by one son, Dale Webb; her parents; and three sisters, Allie V. Zavakis, Ovella Draffen and Gladys Frazier. She was a member of Celebration Christian Center in Terre Haute. Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday in Byrn Chapel in Mayfield, Ky., with the Rev. Larry Glen Riley officiating. Burial is in Beulah Baptist Church cemetery in Carlisle County, Ky. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.
Robert Russell 'Red' Smith
MEROM - Robert Russell "Red" Smith, 83, of Merom, died at 7:15 a.m. Friday, Aug. 20, 2004, in Miller's Merry Manor in Sullivan. He was a retired union brickmason. He was born Aug. 19, 1921, in Washington to Barbee Smith and Opha Browning Smith. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Thelma Ault Smith; his son and daughter-in-law, Lloyd and Michele Smith of Sullivan; five brothers, Ned Smith and Kenneth Smith of Florida, Dwight Smith of Washington, and Kyle Smith and John Smith of Indianapolis; one sister, Ruth Small of Vincennes; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one niece, Pam Smith. He was a veteran of World War II. He received the EAME Theater ribbon with two bronze stars. He enlisted before Pearl Harbor and served for the duration of the war in Panama, Ecuador and France. In November 2001, he and his five brothers received the Sagamore of the Wabash award for their service to the country. He was a charter member of Merom Assembly of God. Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday in Merom Assembly of God with the Revs. Paul Gray and David Smith officiating. Burial with military rites by Hymera, Shelburn and Sullivan American Legion Posts is in Merom cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Monday in Banks & Brust Funeral Home, and after 1 p.m. Tuesday in the church.
Rex A. Thurman
CLINTON - Rex A. Thurman, 48, of Clinton died Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004, in Anderson. He was employed with Ruby Tuesdays Restaurant and would have been the general manager of the new restaurant soon to be opened in Terre Haute. He had owned and operated Rex's Steak and Seafood Restaurant in Honolulu, Hawaii, for several years. He was born Dec. 16, 1955, in Clinton to Larry E. Thurman and Sharon Cohen Thurman. Survivors include one son, Sean Thurman of Clinton; his parents of Clinton; a niece, Tiffany Thurman; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by one brother, Roy E. Thurman. He was a member of the Rotary Club in Hawaii. Services are 3 p.m. Tuesday in Frist Funeral Home. Burial is in Walnut Grove cemetery. Visitation is 1 p.m. until services Tuesday.
Lottie Mae Trueblood
BAINBRIDGE - Lottie Mae Trueblood, 87, of Bainbridge, formerly of Terre Haute died Saturday morning, Aug. 21, 2004, in Danville. She was born Sept. 28, 1916, in Vigo County to Maylon Wayne Bosworth and Lillian Corby. Survivors include one son, Charles Archer; one daughter, Rebecca Ann Sensenbrenner; and three grandchildren. Services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home in Greencastle. Burial is in Mount Pleasant cemetery. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, with an Eastern Star memorial service at 7 p.m.
Helen S. Duggan
Helen S. Duggan, 79, of Terre Haute, died at 2:03 a.m. Friday, Aug. 20, 2004, in her residence. She was a homemaker. She was born Dec. 20, 1924, in South Boston, Va., to William David Smith Sr. and Ella Chandler Smith. Her husband, Lt. Col. Samuel F. Duggan (U.S. Army, Ret.), preceded her in death Feb. 26, 1989. She is survived by two sons, W. Michael Duggan and his wife Denise of Terre Haute and Donald E. Duggan and his wife Erica of Indianapolis; one brother, William David Smith Jr. and his wife Harriette of South Boston; one sister, Ruby Hawthorne of South Boston; five grandchildren, Christine Shaffer and her husband Steve of Avon, Samuel Duggan and his companion Kristen Freeman of Evansville; and Erin, Carter and Becca Duggan, all of Indianapolis; and two great-grandchildren, Logan Mack Shaffer of Avon and Andrew Phillip Nelson Duggan of Evansville. She attended Farmville State Teacher's College in Virginia. She was a member of First Baptist Church. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Tuesday in First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Bernie Jackson officiating. Burial is in Highland Lawn cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 9 p.m. Monday in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street, and 9 a.m. to services Tuesday in the church. Walter L. Williams III
CARBON - Walter L. Williams III, 23, of Carbon, died Aug. 19, 2004, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was employed by Hoosier Hand-Pak in Terre Haute and had previously worked for Walden Inn in Greencastle. He was born Oct. 2, 1980, in Brazil, to Walter L. "Walkie" Williams Jr. and Carolyn Stewart Williams. He is survived by his father, Walter, of Terre Haute; his mother and stepfather, Carolyn and Charles Godsey of Carbon; grandfather, Walter Williams Sr. of Hymera; two step grandmothers, Jerryann Williams of Hymera and Isabelle Otto of Brazil; one sister, Jeannie Williams and her companion Michael Buell of Brazil; a niece, Mallory Renee Buell; two aunts, Rebecca Diane Williams and Jan Hartman and her husband Alan; one uncle, Tony Williams; two cousins, Heather Hartman and Angela Ave; and a large extended family and many friends. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Dale Williams, Robert Stewart and Jean Stewart. He enjoyed working on the computer and playing computer games. He liked spending time with family and friends. Services are 3 p.m. Sunday in Miller Memorial Chapel in Brazil, with Lyle Monnett officiating. Burial follows in Clearview cemetery. Dorothy J. Cooper
Dorothy J. Cooper, 84, of Terre Haute, died at 8:49 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004, in Healthsouth Rehabilitation Hospital. She was a co-owner of Smith's Hardware, and after 12 years of employment, she retired as a secretary for Ironworkers Local 439, a job she loved. She remained truly thankful and appreciative to the officers and members of Local 439. She was born Dec. 16, 1919, in Burnett to Perry Marquis and Mary Ogden Marquis. She is survived by one daughter, Garlinda Cooper, of Terre Haute; two sisters, Katherine Merrilees of Klamath Falls, Ore., and Mary Rogers of Visalia, Calif.; one brother, Jack Marquis of Norwalk, Calif; several nieces and nephews; and special friends Roy Hunt, Erma Timko, Jim Alsman, Jane Frakes and Shelly Easton. She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Gertrude, Robert, Joseph and James; and one son, Garlan W. Cooper, who died Jan. 3, 1974. She was a member of United Methodist Temple, where she was active in the Mature Singles class, served as a church greeter, and for many years, was a counter. She also was a former member of the Honey Creek Mother Bees. As a giving person, she enjoyed helping the needy and the time she spent with Meals on Wheels. Services are 2:30 p.m. Saturday in DeBaun Springhill Chapel, with the Rev. Steve Rundell officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. John Thomas Dean
John Thomas Dean, 87, of Terre Haute, died at 4:05 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004, in his residence. He was a retired truck driver. He was born May 1, 1917, in Bloxwich NR Walsall, England, to Matthew Joel Dean and Margaret Egan Dean. His wife, Anna M. Evans Dean, preceded him in death Oct. 11, 2000. Survivors include three daughters, Susan Dean of Terre Haute, Margaret Donnenhoffer and her husband Joseph of Terre Haute and Donna Hullett and her husband David of Trafalgar; seven grandchildren, Adam Dean Donnenhoffer, Joseph Eric Donnenhoffer, Katherine Anne McCammon, Carmen Marianna Donnenhoffer, Troy Nathanial Taylor, Matthew Dean Taylor and Shelby Christine Hullett; and seven great-grandchildren, Kayla, Jessica, Gabriel, Sidney, Hannah, Clay and Carli. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran and received the Bronze Star for outstanding service. He was a Veterans of Foreign Wars member, was an avid golfer and enjoyed traveling. Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Callahan Funeral Home, 2425 Wabash Avenue, with the Rev. Father Ken Ciano officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Friday in the funeral home. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to a charity of choice.
Ruth Miller
Ruth Miller, of Terre Haute, died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004, in her residence. She was preceded in death by her husband, Myrl C. Miller in 1997, and one son, Kenneth Miller in 1974. Private funeral services are Saturday in Grisier Funeral Home in Archbold, Ohio, with burial in Archbold cemetery. Callahan Funeral Home, 2425 Wabash Avenue, handled local arrangements.
Mary Evelyn Purdue
Mary Evelyn Purdue, 80, of Terre Haute, and formerly of Washington, died at 7:40 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004, in Harborside Healthcare. She was born June 16, 1924, to Martin Deitz and Ola Herrin Deitz. She is survived by five sons, Joe David, Phillip, Mike and Paul. A Mass of Christian Burial is 1 p.m. Saturday in St. Margaret Mary's Church, with the Rev. Father Joe Kern officiating. Interment is in Grandview cemetery. Visitation is 11 a.m. to services Saturday in the church. Mattox-Ryan Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
L. Darlene Brewer
BRAZIL - L. Darlene Brewer, 71, of Brazil, died at 7:05 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004, in her residence. She was the district manager for Preferred Risk Insurance. She was born Dec. 29, 1932, in Moberly, Mo. to Ben and Sarah Boulware. She married
Kenneth Brewer on Oct. 19, 1990, and he survives. Other survivors include one son, Stan Snell of Spring Valley, Calif.; one daughter, Sarah Whitehead and her husband Rex of Brazil; one grandson, Richard Stone of California; and one brother, Richard Howren and his wife Joyce of St. Charles, Mo. She was a high school graduate and had attended one year of college. She was an active member of the St. John United Church of Christ in Center Point, where she played the piano and served as the church choir director. She was a member of the German Oberlander's Club in Terre Haute and the Cloverland Extension Club. She dearly loved music and was an avid reader. Services are 1 p.m. Monday in French Funeral Home, with the Revs. Ted Schory and Steve Moore officiating. Burial follows in Clearview cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday and before services Monday in the funeral home. The family requests memorial contributions be made to Hospice of the Wabash Valley.
Mary Olive Carlson
CLINTON - Mary Olive Carlson, 82, of Clinton, died at 4:13 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004, in Union Hospital in Terre Haute. She was a nurses' aide for the Clinton Nursing Home. She was born June 17, 1922, in Clinton to Everett Wallace and Mary Runyan Wallace. Her husband, Arthur William Carlson, preceded her in death March 7, 1971. Survivors include one son, Larry Carlson and his wife Karen of Clinton; two daughters, Sharon Frazier of Clinton and Marilyn Walters of West Terre Haute; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Russell Wallace and his wife Virginia of Dana. Services are 11 a.m. Saturday in Karanovich-Giovanini Funeral home, with the Rev. InSuk Hong-Peebles officiating. Burial is in Walnut Grove cemetery. Evelyn G. Livingston
SHEPHERDSVILLE - Evelyn G. Livingston, 88, of Shepherdsville, died at 5:25 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004, in Union Hospital in Terre Haute. She was a homemaker. She was born April 10, 1916, in Missouri to Harv Delph and Margaret McCool Delph. Her husband, Lester Livingston, preceded her in death. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Madonna and Bill Edington of West Terre Haute; two sons, Bill Livingston and Richard Livingston, both of Shepherdsville; grandchildren, Donna Kelley of Dana, Cathy Edington of Nashville, Tenn., Mike Livingston of Shepherdsville, and Melissa Hackett of Prairie Creek; step grandchildren, Richard Layton of Shepherdsville, Marty Layton and Bill Layton, both of Clinton; six great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Maxine Houseman of St. John; and several nieces and nephews. She also was preceded in death by her parents. She was an artist and loved flowers. Services are 1 p.m. Saturday in Frist Funeral Home in Clinton, with the Rev. Bob Roush officiating. Burial is in Pleasant View cemetery in Tecumseh. Visitation is noon to services on Saturday in the funeral home.
Delores J. Maesch
STAUNTON - Delores J. Maesch, 75, of Staunton, died at 9:15 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004, in Royal Oaks Healthcare Facility in Terre Haute. She was born Nov. 7, 1928, in Terre Haute to Lawrence King and Lona Mae June Beard King. Her husband, John V. Maesch, preceded her in death Dec. 11, 1974. She is survived by her three sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Darla Maesch, Samuel and Margie Maesch and John and Janet Maesch, all of Staunton; one daughter and son-in-law, Mary and David Walls of Arvada, Colo.; 16 grandchildren, Jenny Pollard and husband Clark, Mindy Nobles and husband Randy, Sara Jane Maesch, Sam Maesch Jr. and wife Julie, Shawn Maesch and wife Ginger, Jim Gilmour and wife Sandra, Tahisha Clark and husband Joey, Brandi Miller and husband Neil, Timothy Dunigan and wife Amanda, Katie Kimmell and husband Mark, Josh Gilmour, John Gilmour, Robert Maesch and wife Shelia, Ed Maesch and wife Theresa, Shellie Messner and husband Don and Vernon Maesch and wife Rachael; many great-grandchildren; one brother, Larry King and his wife Betty of Terre Haute; two sisters, Lucille Wagle of Terre Haute and Loretta Mitchell of Indianapolis; and many nieces, nephews and a large extended family. She also was preceded in death by her parents; one son, William Maesch; and two sisters, Ruth Ziner and Margaret Motife. She enjoyed playing cards, bowling and bingo. She was a loving mother and grandmother. Services are 10 a.m. Saturday in French Funeral Home in Brazil, with Brother Doug Parkey officiating. Burial follows in Clearview cemetery.
