James N. DeLoach Sr.
James N. DeLoach Sr., 60, of Terre Haute died at 1:45 p.m. Saturday, July 31, 2004, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital. He was born Oct. 28, 1943, in Terre Haute to Linyer DeLoach and Freida Piker DeLoach. Survivors include his wife of 22 years, Karen Davies DeLoach; one son, James N. DeLoach Jr. of Terre Haute; one daughter, Nichol Dickson of Terre Haute; two stepsons, Marty Davis of Thailand and Gary Davis of Stilesville; one stepdaughter, Angi Whitecotton and her husband, Brian of Stephenville, Texas; four grandchildren, Caroline Hunter, Danielle Baze and her husband, David, Taylor Whitecotton and Cassie Davis; one great-grandchild, Genesis Baze; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was a graduate of Wiley High School. Memorial services are 11 a.m. Tuesday in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 S. 25th St., with Tony Sollars officiating. Visitation is 10 a.m. until services Tuesday. If friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of their choice.
Arthur V. Kautz
Arthur V. Kautz, 85, of Terre Haute died at 12:30 a.m. Saturday, July 31, 2004, in his residence. He was employed by Northern Indiana Public Service Co. He was born Nov. 17, 1918, in Terre Haute to Arthur E. Kautz and Mabel M. Torbett. Survivors include his wife, Norma Webb-Kautz, whom he married
June 26, 1940, in Terre Haute; one son, Ronald Kautz and his wife, Marjorie of Montgomery, Texas; one daughter, Sandra Carr and her husband, Charles of Bastrop, Texas; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents. He was a graduate of Garfield High School and attended Rose-Polytechnic Institute He served in the Army during World War II as a second lieutenant. He worked for NIPSCO 38 years, retiring in 1978. Services are 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in Roselawn Chapel, with the Rev. Bill Herb officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 11 a.m. until services Tuesday, in the chapel.
Albert E. Tingley
Albert E. "Uncle Al" Tingley, 72, of Terre Haute died Saturday afternoon, July 31, 2004, in his residence. He and his wife were the owners of Uncle Al's Pecans in Terre Haute since 1972 and had operated a restaurant at that location since 1990. He was born April 24, 1932, in Marshall, Ill., to Frank Tingley and Grace Baggs Tingley. Survivors include his wife, Doris Garwood Tingley, whom he married
April 26, 1951, in Marshall; two daughters and sons-in-law, Camille and Daniel Farnsworth of Covington and Corinne and Richard Poling of Lakeland, Fla.; one son and daughter-in-law, Steven Alex and Cindy Tingley of Terre Haute; four grandchildren, Jennifer Farnsworth, Jeffrey Farnsworth, Heather Miller and his youngest grandchild of whom he was especially proud, Brittany Tingley; three great-grandchildren, Brynne Miller, Mercedes Dewlen and Mia Miller; one sister, Rosanna Krock of Marshall; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and his dearly beloved pet, a Boston Terrier named Walnut. He was a 1950 graduate of Marshall High School. In 1952, he joined the Air Force, beginning as a radio operator in Biloxi, Miss. He continued his military career in many places around the world, and later was employed by Lake Central in Danville, Ill., and Allegheny Airlines. He retired from Britt Airways in 1986. He served as treasurer of Kiwanis of Greater Terre Haute and did volunteer work at the 14th and Chestnut Street Community Center. He was a member of Social Lodge 86 Free & Accepted Masons and the Scottish Rite Valley of Terre Haute. There will be no formal funeral service. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in DeBaun Idaho Street Chapel, 1729 S. Eighth St., in Terre Haute and 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Pearce Funeral Home, 314 S. Sixth St., in Marshall. Because of severe allergies, the family has requested no flowers. If friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to the 14th and Chestnut Street Community Center; or, to the Terre Haute Humane Society.
Madge M. Grafe
CLAY CITY - Madge M. Grafe, 87, of Clay City and formerly of Coal City, died Saturday, July 31, 2004, in Shakamak Good Samaritan Healthcare Facility, where she had been a patient for two days. She was a homemaker. She was born July 14, 1917, in Owen County to John S. Smith and Evaline Hochstetler Smith. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, John and Sue Grafe of Clay City; three grandsons, David Grafe and his wife, Janell, Jay Grafe and his wife, Linda and Steve Grafe and his partner, Jeanne Jukes; seven great-grandchildren, Sara, Ryan, Kyle and Troy Grafe, Lauren Grafe, Logan Jukes and Jeremy Vossen; and other extended family. She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Wanda Grafe; and three brothers, Earl Smith, Herschel Smith and Clyde Smith. She was baptized as a young girl at the Coal City Church of Christ and attended school in Coal City. She was a loving mother and known as "Granny" to many. She enjoyed doing word puzzles and was an avid NASCAR fan. Services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Schoppenhorst Funeral Home, with David Grafe officiating. Burial will follow in Beech cemetery. Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. today and before services Tuesday.
Max W. Shaffer
Max W. Shaffer, 68, of Terre Haute, died quietly at home surrounded by family on Friday, July 30. 2004. Max was born January 23, 1936, to Doris and Wayne Shaffer. He served his country in the Army during the occupation of Germany following World War II. Following his military service, he worked at CBS Records for over 10 years. He later joined the Teamsters Local and retired from ABF transport after 25 years of service. Max was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan and baseball enthusiast who coached a semi professional baseball team, the "Staunton All-Stars" for over 10 years in the 1960's. He also enjoyed fishing, mushroom hunting and watching NASCAR racing. He is survived by his three daughters and their husbands, Noell and Timothy Lenardo of Terre Haute, Abagail Shaffer and James Hoke of Loami, II and Holly Shaffer and Charles Schmadeke of Springfield, Ill.; five siblings, Garry Schaffer of Cloverdale, Phyllis and Robert Shaffer of Brazil, Susan and Charles " Chuck" Shaffer of Brazil, Mary Joan and David Brown of Terre Haute, and Marsha Kay Shaffer of Idaho Falls, Idaho. Max's grandchildren include: Evan, Matthew, Audrey and Zachary Lenardo and several nieces and nephews. We will celebrate his life on Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004 from 2 to 4 p.m. at French Funeral Home in Brazil. During the final weeks of his life, Max spoke fondly of his memories of coaching and playing alongside his friend Roy Brann. He wanted to rekindle his participation in the game as a coach despite his ailing health. In memory of his love for the game, his family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Brazil City Park Board c/o Roseanne Jefferies. 714 W. Church St., Brazil, IN 47834. The donations will be used for the restoration of the Roy Brann Stadium in Brazil.
Harvey Bryant
Harvey Bryant, 89, of Terre Haute died at 9:37 p.m. Thursday, July 29, 2004, in Union Hospital. He was born Dec. 21, 1914, in Terre Haute to Arthur Bryant Sr. and Claudia Trueblood Bryant. His wife, Ruth Engle Bryant, died earlier. Survivors include one daughter, Rosetta Ramey; one brother, Art Bryant; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Services are 1 p.m. Monday in Mattox-Wood Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jim Haddix officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 11 a.m. until services Monday.
Jerry L. Dewey
Jerry L. Dewey, 66, of Terre Haute died at 8:50 a.m. Saturday, July 31, 2004, in Union Hospital. He was a school bus driver and a master electrician until his retirement. He was born April 20, 1938, in Terre Haute to William S. Dewey and Alma Brazzell Dewey. Survivors include his wife, Mary Alice Fell, whom he married
July 7, 1956, in Terre Haute; one son, Greg A. Dewey and his wife Karla of Indianapolis; three daughters, Glenda A. Perkins and her husband Daniel of Taunton, Mass., Gayle A. McCreery and her husband Gary of Indianapolis, and Geena A. Jones and her husband Tim of West Terre Haute; five granddaughters, Ashley Dewey, Tabitha Wood, Samantha Wood, Kirsten Dewey and Elizabeth McCreery; one grandson, Spencer McCreery; one step granddaughter, Kristina Jones; and one step grandson, Jacob Jones. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Ruth Gresham; and one brother, Raymond Dewey. He was a member of New Life Fellowship Church. Services are 7 p.m. Monday in New Life Fellowship Church in East Glenn, with the Rev. Jeffrey Harpole officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Nancy Ann Walter O'Laughlin
Nancy Anne Walter O'Laughlin, of Terre Haute, died at 11:40 a.m. Friday, July 30, 2004. She was born May 3, 1930, in Cleveland to Hugo Louis Walter and Edna Mae Lewis Walter. Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Sean Martin and Paula O'Laughlin, of Claremont; Kevin Patrick and Gail O'Laughlin, of Terre Haute; and Daniel Joseph and Renee O'Laughlin of Noblesville; one daughter, Margaret Mary "Peg" O'Laughlin, of Falls Church, Va.; one daughter-in-law, Tia O'Laughlin; twelve grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 47 years, William T. O'Laughlin; and a son, William W. O'Laughlin. She was a member of St. Joseph University Parish where she was active in the Altar Society and the Secular Franciscan Order. She also was a member of the Compassionate Friends of the Wabash Valley. In the late 1960's she served the Covered Bridge Girl Scouts as a junior and cadet leader, and was a Cub Scout den mother for the Boy Scouts. A graduate of Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, she was a member of Phi Mu Sorority and was instrumental in establishing the local Phi Mu alumnae chapter, in addition to serving a term as National A/V Chairman of the sorority. She worked as a merchandising consultant for Hooks Drugs for 20 years, retiring in 1993. Mass of Christian Burial is 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Joseph Catholic Church, with the Rev. Father Paul Schloemer officiating. Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday in Callahan Funeral Home, 2425 Wabash Avenue, with rosary service at 7 p.m. Cremation is scheduled. Burial is in Calvary cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made to the Secular Franciscan Order of St. Joseph's Parish; or, to Hospice of the Wabash Valley.
Rose Ann Payne
Rose Ann Payne, 70, of Terre Haute, died at 2:40 a.m. Friday, July 30, 2004, in Union Hospital. She was retired from Carosi's Restaurant. She was born February 11, 1934, in Farmersburg to Ralph Sparks and Marie Felton Sparks. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Ronnie K. Payne; a daughter, Rhonda Casey and her husband, Jerry of Terre Haute; three sons, Chuck Payne of Terre Haute, Mark Payne and his wife, Jean Ann of Terre Haute and Curt Payne and his wife, Lyndi of Rockville; a sister, Glenda Bonte of Terre Haute; two brothers, Bill Sparks of Daytona Beach, Fla., and Garry Sparks of Ashland City, Tenn.; four grandchildren, Michael Payne, Dustin Higgins, Shelby Payne and Curtis Payne; four step grandchildren, Lyndsay McKinley, Kelsey Harrold, Katelyn Harrold and Sarah Casey; several sisters-in-law; several brothers-in-law, including James W. Joseph Sr. of Terre Haute; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Jim Sparks and Ralph Sparks Jr.; five sisters, Donna Joseph, Wanda Johnson, Phyllis Sparks, Lavada Elkins and Viva Lance; and three brothers-in-law, Donald Bonte Sr., Robert Johnson and Kenneth Elkins. She was a graduate of Wiley High School and a member of American Legion Post 104 Auxiliary. Services are 1 p.m. Monday in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 S. 25th St., with the Rev. John Purdue Jr.
SULLIVAN - John Purdue Jr., 61, of Sullivan died at 5:40 a.m. Friday, July 30, 2004, in Union Hospital in Terre Haute. He was employed by the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility as a foreman and mechanic at Pen Products. He formerly was employed by Columbus Sportswear as a mechanic. He was born Oct. 3, 1942, in Bartholomew County, to John Purdue Sr., and Cleo Burton Purdue. Survivors include his companion, Becky Purdue of Sullivan; four sons, Chris Purdue of Terre Haute, Jeff Purdue of Seymour, Mike Purdue and Tony Purdue, both of Columbus; one daughter, Cindy Purdue of Columbus; four stepdaughters, Stephanie Crump of Shepherdsville, Ky., Melissa Sandlin and Heather De Hart, both of Seymour, Jennifer Prior of Peru; 25 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister. Services are 1:30 p.m. Monday in Myers Funeral Service, Hathaway-Myers Chapel, 1022 Pearl St., in Columbus. Burial is in Harmony cemetery. Perry Elyle Fouty
Perry Elyle Fouty, 82, of Phoenix, died Saturday, July 24, 2004, in Show Low, Ariz. He was a retired teacher and coach. He was born in Hazel Dell, Ill. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Harriett Jane Fouty, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; one brother, Charlie Fouty of Terre Haute; a son, Warren Fouty of Overgaard, Ariz.; a daughter, Judy Norris of Rosedale; and one granddaughter, Larissa Norris of Rosedale. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during the Battle of the Bulge. He was a graduate of Indiana State University and Arizona State University. He taught physical education and coached basketball and tennis in Arizona and Texas for more than 30 years. Private services are in Show Low. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to any charity.
June D. Jackson
June D. Jackson, 76, of Franklin, and formerly of Greenwood and Terre Haute, died Wednesday, July 28, 2004, in Franklin United Methodist Community. She was born June 21, 1928, in Covington to Jessie Switzer and Cora Wick Switzer. Her husband, James Andrew Jackson, preceded her in death. Survivors include a son, Andy Jackson, of Morgantown. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Jessie and Donald Switzer; and two sisters, Peg Wilcoxen and Pearl Cohen. Services are 11:30 a.m. today in Forest Lawn Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Home in Greenwood, with the Rev. John Eley officiating. Burial is in Forest Lawn Memory Garden.
Joe 'Cash' Jones
Joe "Cash" Jones, 86, a former resident of Terre Haute, died Tuesday, July 27, 2004, at the home of his daughter in California. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1982. He was born September 19, 1917, in Terre Haute to Charles Jones Sr. and Bertha Jane Heller. Survivors include his daughter, Col. Sally Petty and her husband, Thomas White of Edwards Air Force Base, California; one granddaughter, Andrea Gault and her husband Bibb of San Antonio; one great-grandson, Joe, of San Antonio; four sisters, Helen Denham, Rosella Riggs, and Doris Jones, all of Terre Haute, and Ann Peichocki of Gary; and one brother, James Jones of Brazil. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 56 years, Stella Faye Lankford Jones; a daughter, Susan Jones; his sisters, Mary Le Compte, Margaret Heavyside, and Edith Lankford; and his brothers, Charles Jones Jr. and Ralph Jones. He graduated from Otter Creek School in 1936, served in the Civilian Conservation Corps, then the U.S. Army during World War II, seeing duty in Hawaii four days after the Pearl Harbor attack, then in Australia and New Guinea. He attended Spring Creek Community Church. There will be private family services. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park. Roselawn Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.
Marian Ruth Moore
Marian Ruth Moore, 100, of Terre Haute and formerly of Brick, N.J., and Point Pleasant Beach, N.J., died at 9:12 p.m. Tuesday, July 27, 2004, in Union Hospital. She was retired from New Jersey Bell Telephone Company. She was born Oct. 23, 1903, in Bayonne, N.J. Her husband of 52 years, Frederick A. Moore, preceded her in death. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. John W. Moore and Nancy Moore of Terre Haute; six grandchildren, Mallory Kennedy of Wall, N.J., Terrence Moore of Brick, Merill Seyler of Greensboro, N.C., Matthew Moore, M.D., of Cincinnati, Sarah Janicki of Indianapolis and David Moore of Chicago; and seven great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by a son, Frederick J. Moore; and a daughter-in-law, Joan Moore. She was a member of St. Thomas Lutheran Church of Brick, N.J., and Order of Eastern Star Grand Chapter of New Jersey. Funeral services and visitation are in St. Thomas Lutheran Church in Brick.
